University of Ottawa in Canada. He also did a hand fellowship at The University of Alabama and a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at Tuckahoe Orthopaedics in Virginia before returning to Newnan to practice general orthopedics at PAPP clinic in 1984. Powell was no stranger to Coweta County’s medical community. Dr. Powell comes from a family of prominent doctors and is the fifth generation to practice medicine in Coweta County. His grandfather, Dr. Joe Peniston, and his father, Dr. Jack Powell, Jr., were two of the four original doctors who founded the PAPP Clinic. Powell said the intensive training he received, especially during his residency at Emory, helped lay the groundwork for his general orthopedics practice at PAPP clinic: “The reason I trained at Emory is because I wanted to be close to home, and I wanted to give the folks in Newnan the same care they would get in Atlanta. I knew I was going to be the first orthopedist at PAPP clinic, and I wanted to be able to make referrals back to Atlanta if I ever needed to.”

r. Jack Powell, III, Newnan’s first orthopedic surgeon, founding partner of Georgia Bone and Joint, and one of the medical directors of Atlanta’s 1996 Olympic Games, initially planned to announce his retirement at the re-opening of the practice’s refurbished facility in late March. Before the novel Coronavirus forced his early retirement, Dr. Powell says it ushered in one of the most promising new trends in orthopedics: telemedicine. “One of the things before I left that was very important was that we start a telemedicine program to serve our patients. I believe that is the cutting edge of medicine and will become increasingly important in the future.” Dr. Powell is an expert on envisioning trends in his field: he’s been a pioneer in orthopedic medicine for nearly 50 years. After his graduation from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977, Powell completed his general surgery internship and orthopedic residency at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Powell completed further training in spine surgery during a fellowship at the

As his patient load grew, Dr. Powell initially practiced alone, assisted by the general surgery team at the PAPP Clinic who still did some orthopedics. However, after a few years of being the PAPP Clinic’s sole orthopedic surgeon, he knew he needed help. He first brought on a physician’s assistant, then hired Dr. George Ballantyne as his first partner. After that, they added a new physician “every three to four years,” until Powell’s drive to bring world-class orthopedic care to his hometown led him to think bigger. “We were working at PAPP clinic, which was a multispecialty group. Doctors Gruber, Ballantyne, Kessler and myself realized that while we loved working with internists and general surgeons, we felt like we needed more specialists and a surgery center. And the only way to get a surgery center is to have a single-specialty center, so we could build our own operating rooms for orthopedics.” “With the surgery center, we also had to have physical therapy, an imaging center, and pain management. It was also important to have some kind of fitness component, because when patients finish physical therapy, they need a fitness center to return to their normal lifestyle. That’s where the Summit Family YMCA came in to be a part of the facility. We got the support of the hospital and the doctors to build the Summit in 2000. It has been the Georgia Bone and Joint campus since then,” Powell explained. The creation of an all-inclusive orthopedics practice wasn’t enough to satisfy Dr. Powell’s need to innovate: Soon after, Powell realized that the field was changing in a significant way. “I saw that we needed sub-specialization and we felt that was where orthopedics was going. Dr. George Ballantyne, Dr. Michael Gruber, and myself were the last of the old guard general orthopedists who saw a bit of everything and took care of everything. Now orthopedics is much more sub-specialized. So that’s why, at Georgia Bone and Joint, we have Dr. Dave Heinsch doing foot and ankle, Dr. Chad Kessler and Dr. David Love doing spine, Dr. Trevor Turner doing regenerative medicine and Orthobiologics, Dr. Michael Cushing doing shoulders, Dr. Clark Walker focused on sports medicine and Dr. Jayson McMath offering pediatric orthopedics so families do not have to drive to Atlanta for

care.” Powell continued to innovate. Russ Foley, a physical therapist from Northwestern University, was an integral part in developing the physical therapy and rehabilitation programs at Georgia Bone and Joint. “He’s easily one of the top 5 guys in the state for Physical Therapy. He helped organize the rehab department which is very important for patients and is a huge component of our facility. Russ also developed our sports medicine partnership with the Coweta and Fayette high schools. It was all fun, and we had a great time doing it.” Powell and his team at Georgia Bone and Joint also helped pioneer safer surgical procedures. “David LaGuardia, an anaesthetist for 35 years, developed spinal and extremity-blocking procedures for our patients instead of general anesthesia that put them at much less risk during surgery. That model was based on techniques to improve patient safety and was expanded to multiple hospitals and facilities by Mr. LaGuardia. When asked how he was able to grow such a successful practice, Powell is quick to share the credit: “I always believed in bringing in people that were smarter than me, and they’re all honest as the day is long. They’re all good, family people. We’ve not had one doctor leave, either, which is remarkable. Everyone loves Newnan. They’ve raised their families here.” Dr. Jayson McMath, the current president of Georgia Bone and Joint, refuses to let Powell downplay his contribution to the creation and growth of the practice: "Dr.Jack Powell's passion and heart for the patients of Newnan and Coweta County is boundless. As the founder of Georgia Bone and Joint back 35 years ago, Dr. Powell has served thousands of patients, and he has led our practice with grace, passion and intellect. We wish him every success in his retirement and know he will not be too far from Georgia Bone and Joint." Powell is confident he’s leaving both the practice and the community in competent hands: “I think we have a great medical system here in Newnan, and I am proud of the role Georgia Bone and Joint plays in that system providing orthopedic excellence and exceptional care for our patients. We have the new Piedmont Hospital facility and the Cancer Treatment Center, which are both wonderful. We’ve got a great foundation. Strong doctors, great hospitals, good education and strong leaders - what else can you ask for? It’s all very important. I think we’re on the road to success.”

Yamaha hiring 300 more in Newnan

NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

Y

amaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America, is immediately hiring over 300 new contract employees to assist in many assembly line functions to help keep pace with the growing demand for all Yamaha recreational products assembled at its Newnan facility. Based in Coweta County, YMMC designs and assembles four key product lines including golf cars, all-terrain vehicles, personal watercraft and recreational off-road vehicles, or what many refer to as side-by-side vehicles. Yamaha’s last hiring push was just over a month ago, and over 100 employees were added to the team at that time. Now more people are needed. “Demand for our products has stayed incredibly strong. People are foregoing travel and choosing to find fun close to home,” said Bob Brown, vice president of finance and operations support. “That means they are buying all the recreational and water sports vehicles that we make right here in Newnan.” “We are gearing up now for an incredible 2021, which means we need more people to add to our motivated, diverse and talented team,” he continued. “Our products provide a lifetime of exciting and memorable experiences to our customers, and we give a lifetime of stability and support for our team. Everybody wins.” Yamaha has produced almost 4 million power sports recreation vehicles in 32 years, at their Newnan location, according to Richard Jones, Vice President of Operations.

“Our greatest hiring need is vehicle assembly. Every Yamaha assembly worker starts through our contract partner at $13 an hour. At 30 days, team members are eligible for full Yamaha hire,” Jones said. “Pay jumps immediately to $15 and soon thereafter to $18 an hour. Yamaha benefits are extraordinary. Full healthcare, medical, dental, vision, profit sharing, 401k with company match. 10 paid vacation days, 10 paid holidays per year. Yamaha is a diverse and dynamic corporation with over 1,500 employees. We have limitless opportunities through our weekly job posting system and career assistance.” What do Yamaha employees say about the opportunities? Chris McGarrity, an eight-year Yamaha employee started at Yamaha as a material handler and is currently in the front office as a new model planner. “So, the opportunities are astronomical,” McGarrity said. “You can keep climbing as long as you're here at Yamaha.” Currently, Yamaha is also offering over $1,300 in bonuses for contract employees in their first six months. Yamaha is looking to fill open positions for assemblers, material handlers, welders, certified forklift operators and more. Additional information about available positions and how to apply can be found online at www.yamaha-motor-georgia. com . YMMC celebrated 30 years of manufacturing at their Newnan location in June of 2018.

of the Week

My name is:

a x is a n 8-month-old Sta f fordshire mi x being fostered by Hearts ‘n Homes Rescue. When he came to Hearts ‘n Homes as an owner surrender in August, Max had a severe demodectic mange infection. He had no hair, open sores and couldn’t walk. He spent a week-and-a-half at the vet, said Kim McCurry of Hearts ‘n Homes. Now, Max is in great shape and ready for a new home. “He’s 100 times better than he was,” McCurry said. Max gets along well with other dogs and people, and seems to thrive being around other dogs. He hasn’t been around young children, but seems to do well around older children. He hasn’t been around cats, but McCurry doesn’t think he would have problems with cats. He’s never shown any aggression, she said. Max is potty trained, crate trained and knows how to sit, but he is still learning. “He’s a great little boy,” said McCurry. He’s been neutered. Hearts ‘n Homes often takes in sad, complex medical cases – dogs that may not otherwise have a chance. “We are committed to helping these dogs, which can stretch available resources very thin, being a nonprofit,” McCurry said. “It can be so rewarding to see them come out the other side, enjoying life as a dog and finding their forever homes.” The organization depends on donations to be able to treat the dogs and get them healthy. “Max is a perfect example of why monetary donations are so very important to keep us functioning,” she said. “We could not have helped him without donations from the public.” There is also an ongoing need for foster parents, McCurry said. To get more information about adopting Max, to volunteer or donate, visit Heartsnhomesrescue.org or call 917-8737408 . Max’s adoption fee is $200.

rank in Scouts BSA, formerly the Boy Scouts of America, and only 4 percent of Scouts have achieved the title since the organization's inception in 1911. To reach this rank, a scout must earn and pass through all other ranks, earning a minimum of 21 merit badges and demonstrating leadership across the various ranks, and then successfully plan, lead and execute a community service project. Cambron and Jackson, along with their father, Randy Berry, are history buffs and have been longtime members of the NCHS, making the organization a natural choice for their community project beneficiary. The brothers proposed two separate projects for the society. Cambron’s project focused on improving the landscaping of the area next to the railroad tracks by removing all weeds, adding plants and spreading pine straw. Jackson’s projects focused on improving the appearance of the railway platform by repainting the scaffolding and building four benches for visitor use. “Cam and Jack have added such value to the Historic Train Depot,” Kimbell said

in the release. “The railroad platform is once again a place for visitors and community members to congregate, sit and enjoy the passing trains. The work is even more meaningful knowing that our local youth completed the project and that our organization got to play a small part in helping them reach their goal of becoming Eagle Scouts. We are so proud!” The two projects took over 224 hours to complete with 24 volunteers working to complete them, and the brothers faced challenges while completing their work. Painting the scaffolding on the railroad platform and clearing out rocks to re-landscape proved to be particularly tough. “One of the most challenging parts of leading a project is staying focused on the task at hand, being patient with people and providing instructions for the tasks that were required,” Jackson said. Despite the difficulty of the project, the experience was rewarding for both the NCHS and Berry family, according to the release. “The most rewarding thing about being the leader was the feeling of successfully leading and executing a project that will truly benefit the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society … plus we got to have some pizza,” Cambron said.

Caregiver of the Week: Linda Swindle

Our Greatest Generation A Collection of Stories from Coweta County’s WWII Veterans

Linda Swindle and Mary Livers

Brookdale Senior Living of Newnan would like to shine the spotlight on Linda Swindle. Ms. Linda is loved by all, staff included. Both residents and staff love when she works. She is a hard worker, but most of all she cares for each resident as if they were her own family. She has recently become a certified medical technician, and she is now passing meds as well as caring for each resident daily. We don’t know what we would do without her. Linda has been a caregiver for 19 years. She was inspired to become a caregiver because of the love her mom gave to her and her 10 siblings. Linda said the challenge of being a caregiver is getting attached to residents and dealing with their passing.

Linda loves caring for her residents and encourages other caregivers to treat each patient as if they were their own mother or father and treat them with love, respect and dignity. We love you Ms. Linda.
