local material science company, ThermoPore Materials, has developed a design for a new type of N95 respirator in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. ThermoPore has been in
Newnan for about 13 years, according to President Ken Milam, who started the company out of his garage. Milam said ThermoPore produces a microporous plastic material, which is used in different applications that need a porous plastic. He said porous plastics are used in marker tips, so the ink

can flow through the tip when it touches paper. Milam said plugin air fresheners sometimes use a porous plastic wick, so the liquid can evaporate. Porous plastics also have scientific applications, and are used as a filter in pipette tips. “It’s a great job if you have a little bit of ADD,” Milam said. “You

can jump from consumer to medical to industrial.” Although the applications and shapes are different, Milam said the material is always made the same way. He said they fuse plastic particles to one another, which looks like BB’s that have been MASKS . 2

stuck together. COVID-19 response Milam said in late March, he was watching news reports about how bad the COVID-19 situation was in New York City. He said he was surprised that they were having shortages of PPE, including N95 respirators. “I was like really? Do we really have shortages of this stuff ?” Milam said. “I kind of felt this sense of urgency that I needed to do something.” He said he thought that ThermoPore’s material could be made into an N95 mask. Milam said he started working on it, but thought at some point they would hit a wall and decide that it isn’t possible. Milam said in the development process, every time they hit a hurdle they found a solution to overcome it. He said when they made their first prototype, it encouraged them to keep going. He utilized connections he’s made over the years when he needed a question answered, and everything fell into place. Milam said he bought a used prototype
machine off of Ebay, and the first go at it was encouraging enough to stick with the project. “Since late March, there hasn’t been a day where I’ve woken up or gone to sleep without thinking about the masks,” Milam said.
Ramping up production In September, ThermoPore received government approval to produce the masks. Milam said they haven’t made many yet, as they’re a small company with 10 employees. “We couldn’t justify building the production line until we knew we were able to do it,” Milam said. Milam said a lot of time and effort went into making sure the project was going to be feasible, and now they’re beginning to focus their attention on ramping up production. The N95 masks will be made in sizes recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The five sizes include small, medium, large, tall/narrow and short/wide. Milam said they are currently working on the mask line, which they believe will

be able to produce 150,000 masks per week when it’s up and running. Milam said their goal is to start producing the masks in January. “We feel like we have a manufacturing platform that is scalable and not too complicated,” Milam said. Milam said the N95 masks they have designed don’t use a nonwoven material, which other N95 masks are made out of. He said the material N95 masks are made out of is in high demand, and there is a limitation to how much is being produced. “The crisis that rocked America was
largely the result of not having the capacity to make the material,” Milam said. He said he believes ThermoPore has created a strong product that will continue to generate interest even after the COVID-19 pandemic. Milam expects that their masks will be produced for health care workers, and not the general public. ThermoPore was featured in The Wall Street Journal in an article about new models of masks Nov. 27. “I don’t think there’s any other project the Wall Street Journal would call about,” Milam said.

R
uth Hill Elementary School student, Isabella “Izzy” McMillan, was recently awarded the second annual Carol D. Reiser Youth Service Award for raising over $1,800 in Camp Invention Connect scholarships for 10 classmates. Nominated by Ruth Hill gifted teacher Mary Thompson, McMillan was selected as this year’s elementary winner among the fifty applicants around the metro-Atlanta area, according to Thompson. The Carol D. Reiser Award is a celebration of excellence in youth community engagement presented by the Corporate Volunteer Council of Atlanta whose mission is to connect, inspire and impact the metro Atlanta area. With the help of Thompson, McMillan developed a pitch and visited local Newnan businesses asking for monetary donations to help classmates whose families might not be able to afford the cost of camp. Camp Invention Connect will be sponsored by Ruth Hill Elementary and directed by Thompson virtually at the end of this month. Upon receiving the award, McMillan was given $500, which she will use to open her first bank account. She was also award-

ed $1,500 towards the nonprofit organization of her choice. McMillan chose Camp Invention Connect, which means eight more full scholarships for her classmates. The following is McMillan’s acceptance speech from the virtual awards ceremony: “Ladies and gentlemen of Corporate Volunteer Council of Atlanta, thank you so much for this award. It’s an honor that you picked me out of 50 other people. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the news. I would like to extend a special thank you to my REACH teacher, Coach T. for hearing my pitch and helping me accomplish my goal. Also, my mother who always encourages me to help others. A huge thanks to the Newnan businesses who gave generously to help me reach the goal of sending 10 students to Camp Invention. With the check of $1,500 from this award, eight more kids will get to go to Camp Invention this December! I know they will enjoy doing the STEM projects and working with the robots. Thank you for helping me give the gift of learning to fellow classmates.”
