One Roof event helps grandparents for Christmas BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com
G
randparents who are raising their grandchildren got to “shop” for Christmas gifts for their grandchildren and got some things for themselves at One Roof Outreach last week. On Thursday, grandparents were invited to come out and choose from a large number of donated items. There were also snacks and drinks, said Ann Kerlin of One Roof. Grandparents were given tickets based on the number of children in their homes and could cash them in for gifts. New gifts for the children were donated by the community. Gifts for the grandparents included makeup kits, personal care kits, gloves, hats, socks, scarves and sweaters. Some community members also donated gently used items, including mens dress shirts and coats and new dress shirts. Several local organizations helped collect items, Kerlin said. This was the first year for the event and next year, “we will start collecting items earlier and maybe even find a bigger place outside of our office to hold the event,” she said. “The volunteers seemed to enjoy it, and we really appreciated seeing the community come alongside us to make this a success.”

Volunteers Jane Dunckel and Pat Richmond show some of the gifts at the One Roof grandparents raising grandchildren Christmas event. There are some children’s items still left, and One Roof has been allowing parents who are short on Christmas gifts to pick out a few items for their children. allen Cowetans were remembered with a wreath laying when local veterans gathered at Veterans Memorial Plaza for the Wreaths Across America ceremony on Dec. 19. "The freedoms we have enjoyed today have not come without a price," said Jeff Bouchard, commander of VFW Post 2667, in an opening statement. "The names on those plaques behind me and in the cemeteries throughout this nation are men and women who gave their lives so we can live in freedom and without fear." Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when the Worcester Wreath Company donated a surplus of wreaths to Arlington Cemetery. A viral photo of the wreaths in 2005

“Twas the night before Jesus came and all through the place, Not a creature was praying, not one on their face. Their Bibles were lain on the shelf without care, In hopes that Jesus would not come there. The children were dressing to crawl into bed, Not one ever kneeling or bowing a head. And Mom in her rocker with baby on her lap, Was watching the Late Show while I took a nap. When out of the East there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash! When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But angels proclaiming that Jesus was here. With a light like the sun sending forth a bright ray, I knew in a moment this must be THE DAY! The light of His face made me cover my head, It was Jesus returning just like He had said. And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth, I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself. In the Book of Life which He held in His hand, Was written the name of every saved man. He spoke not a word as He searched for my name; When He said “It’s not here” my head hung in shame. The people whose names had been written with love, He gathered to take to His Father above. With those who were ready He rose without a sound, While all the rest were left standing around. I fell to my knees, but it was too late, I had waited too long and thus sealed my fate. I stood and I cried as they rose out of sight; Oh, if only I had been ready tonight. In the words of this poem the meaning is clear, The coming of Jesus is drawing near. There’s only one life and when comes the last call, We’ll find that the Bible was true after all!”

caused the event to spread around the country to veterans memorials and cemeteries. Five of the wreaths were to honor those who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the War on Terror. A wreath was placed to honor the military members who are POW and MIA. Another wreath was laid to recognize all service members. The remaining two wreaths were placed at the statues honoring Medal of Honor recipients from Coweta County.

Billy Alford plays taps as the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony comes to an end.
"The wreaths represent our commitment as the United States of America to remember the fallen," said Veda Brooks, commander of American Legion Post 57. "They also symbolize our honor to those who have served and are serving in the armed forces of our great nation and to their families who endure sacrifices every day on our behalf." The ceremony is coordinated each year by John O’Connor, a local veteran and former commander of VFW post 2667. "It's a good idea to remember our fallen warriors as we get ready for Christmas," he said. "Their families are without their loved ones. The least we could do is let them know we're thinking about them."

More student artwork uploaded to Nixon Centre virtual galleries BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
T
he Nixon Centre for Performing and Visual Arts is closed for Christmas, but a new virtual gallery of student artwork has been uploaded for the public to enjoy. Along with the Patrons of the Centre, the Nixon Centre recently held the “Stay Safe for the Holidays Mask Contest” for Coweta County middle school students. Entries were judged by doctors and Georgia Bone and Joint. Sponsors included The Boyd Gallery, Corner Arts Gallery and Studio, Fine Lines Art and Framing, and the Patrons of the Centre, who provided cash prizes for the young artists. First place winner was Sarah Caldwell, an eighth-grader at Evans Middle School, who was awarded $100 for her nutcracker-themed mask design. Charlotte Blackmon, a sixth-grader at Madras Middle School, won second place and was awarded $75. Manuel Moran Mendoza, a seventh-grader at Evans Middle School, won third place and was awarded $50. Honorable mention and $25 went to Audrey Ervin, Yaan Flores Mendoza and a third middle-schooler whose full name was withheld.

It is the latest virtual gallery offered by the Nixon Centre. Advanced Placement/ Advanced Art students were unable to display their work in the Nixon Centre’s annual spring exhibit last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and their work also is being displayed virtually. Student artwork from the Nixon Centre’s virtual art camp can be viewed on the website as well. A large-scale renovation project was recently completed at the Nixon Centre, and the public can virtually tour the facility to see its upgrades and additions, as well as explore the virtual galleries, at www.thenixoncentre.net .
