Historic quadruplets celebrate 4th birthday BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

The quadruplets who made history at Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently celebrated their fourth birthday. Brayden, Bryant, Brandon and Kenlee Miller were the first quadruplets to be born at Piedmont Newnan, on Dec. 16, 2016. They were born to mom Kortney Miller and dad Justin Miller, and they have a big brother named Bentlee. They celebrated their fourth birthday with a party the weekend after their birthday. Kortney said having four children who are 4 has been an adjustment. “Which it has been since day one,” she added. Kortney said the quads are in school, they’re working on potty training and they’re starting to talk better. She said school has helped them become more independent. “It has taught them they don’t have to depend on each other as much,” Kortney said. “They’re trying to do things separately.” Kortney said they’re growing fast, and are constantly growing out of their clothes. Kortney said Kenlee is still sassy, Brandon is sneaky, Brayden PHOTO COURTESY KORTNEY MILLER is mischievous and Bryant is the heartbreaker of the bunch. After eye amputation, kittens find happy homes BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com

T

he Newnan Coweta Humane Society often ends up helping pets with medical issues, and two litters of kittens with severe eye and respiratory infections were no exception. When NCHS volunteers got the kittens, which had been living on a local resident’s porch since their birth, their eyes were bulging with puss. That was a Saturday. “We knew the worst one was going to need surgery right away,” said Linda Earhart, a board member and cat foster for NCHS. That first kitten, Amala, had both of her eyes removed the next week. Another, Raza had both eyes removed a week later and the third, Brayleigh, lost one eye. All the others were able to keep their eyes, though some still have ulcers – which look like cloudy spots – that likely won’t go away. The kittens were on a long list of medicines and it took nearly two months for the infections to clear up completely. All three of the kitties that lost their eyes now are in new homes – as are the other five in the two litters. Amala was adopted by one of the veterinary students at Dogwood Animal

Hospital, where the surgery was done. The other two were adopted together. Though the two boys can’t see at all, they haven’t let that stop them. “It’s unbelievable how they can get around,” Earhart said. “You really wouldn’t even know, except you can see that they don’t have eyes.” The two blind boys are able to use their other senses to get around. Before his surgery, Raza wasn’t very active – he clearly didn’t feel well. But 24 hours after his surgery, “he was playing and tossing a piece of plastic up in the air,” Earhart said. “It was just amazing how much they can do.” Brayleigh and Raza are happy and doing well in their new home, said their owner Kristie Ann Rosenquist. She said she was glad she adopted the two siblings, instead of just one. “I feel that Raza wouldn’t be the same without Brayleigh because he follows her everywhere,” she said. She got them a 6-foot-tall cat tree, and he has learned how to climb it, and the pair like to sit on the top of it together. The two love water and like to get in the shower whenever it is on, she said.
