Born with Trisomy 18, Georgia Minor continues to thrive BY RACHEL ADAMS news@newnan.com

lmost four years ago now, Georgia Minor was born to proud parents Patrick and Kimberly. Georgia has Trisomy 18, also known Edwards Syndrome, a condition that occurs in about one out of every 2,500 pregnancies in the U.S. and one out of every 6,000 live births, according to the Trisomy 18 Foundation. Only 50 percent of babies who are carried to term are born alive, and approximately 10 percent of those babies survive to their first birthdays. But Georgia continues to defy these odds, and she will celebrate her fourth birthday on Jan. 15. Georgia undergoes physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy every week. She also finished her third round of neurosuit therapy in September, a therapy designed to help the body stay compacted and develop correctly.

Kimberly said the neurosuit was originally designed for astronauts who were in space for an extended period of time. It helped keep their joints and muscles compacted to avoid damage while they were in zero gravity for weeks to months at a time. “Not a lot of people realize that just standing and walking around helps your body maintain its natural functions,” Kimberly said. “I researched the therapy, and we got really lucky and found a clinic near us that offered it.” The neurosuit therapy Georgia attends is offered in three-week periods, five days a week for four hours a day. “The kids come in and wear these neurosuits and do very intense physical therapy for four hours straight,” Kimberly said. “It’s hard on them because they’re kids. They’re little, and they’re

Local artist’s work selected for CURE calendar BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

oweta resident Bonnie Annis’ artwork “The Unseen Woman” was recently selected to be featured in the 2021 CURE calendar. CURE Media Group is a resource for cancer updates, research and education. The winning submissions were selected by a committee of CURE staff members from 121 entries and represent the beauty and creativity that can be found in the cancer experience, according to a press release from the organization. “Congratulations to these amazing artists who were hand-picked to be showcased in our 2021 CURE calendar,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, parent company of CURE Media Group. “The number of works we have received from artists across the United States for this contest is truly unbelievable. We thank everyone in the CURE community who submitted

their art online to be featured in our calendar and CURE art gallery.” Annis has been a contributing writer for Cure Magazine for the past five years. During that time, the magazine began accepting art submissions from the public to provide an outlet for those affected by cancer. “About a year after my breast cancer diagnosis, I began using art as therapy,” Annis said. “A self-taught artist, I found as I would paint, my focus would shift from physical pain to enjoyment.” Annis said when the calendar contest was advertised, she decided to submit one of her paintings. She was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer in 2014. She was stage 2B, with metastasis to the lymph glands. Annis had both breasts removed and also had eight lymph glands removed.

She was told she’d need chemotherapy and radiation, and because her cancer was fed by three types of hormones — estrogen, progesterone and HER2/Neu — she also needed hormone therapy. “After much prayer and research, I chose to forego chemo, but did go through seven weeks, 28 rounds, of radiation,” Annis said. She tried three anti-hormone medications that gave her terrible side effects, so she stopped taking them after four months and began an all natural health regimen. A naturopath at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America helped her come up with a plan of supplements, organic foods and more. “As I was implementing that course of action, I began noticing an unusual swelling in my upper arms,” Annis said. “It was painful and uncomfortable, limiting my movements.” Annis had developed secondary lymphedema, a side effect of the breast cancer surgery. She went through therapy for that, and now she has to use a compression machine to help alleviate the daily swelling. Her piece "The Unseen Woman" represents how she didn’t want to be seen right after her breast cancer surgery. “I was embarrassed and ashamed of what cancer had taken from me, so I tried to hide myself, becoming invisible,” Annis said. “But after I realized how thankful I was to be alive, slowly I began to want to be seen.” “Cancer causes so much more than physical distress in a person’s life. It also causes emotional anguish, but often, that isn’t addressed by therapy or treatment,” Annis added. Annis said she was honored and grateful to have her artwork chosen for the calendar. She said she was surprised to receive the news. “I hope other breast cancer patients will find that art is healing, and sometimes, it can even ‘save lives.’ It has surely saved mine,” Annis said. ster is a 3-year-old Jack Russell / pit mix being fostered by Hearts ’n Homes Rescue. Aster is sweet and smart, and does well around other dogs. She hasn’t been around cats in her foster home. She hasn’t been around children, either, but her foster family thinks she would do well with them. When Aster was rescued from the Coweta County Animal Shelter, she had a limp. It turned out she had a complete tear in her cranial cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in her left knee. She recently completed a lengthy rehabilitation from surgery to repair those problems in her left leg. Aster also has a partial CCL tear in her right leg. While it’s not bothering her right now, she may need surgery in the future. Her adoptive family will need to be committed to doing the surgery if it becomes needed. Aster is house- and crate-trained, and is very energetic. The standard adoption fee from Hearts ’n Homes is $200. For more information about Aster, visit heartsnhomesrescue.org .

Tips for sticking to your New Year’s resolutions BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

For those that decide to set resolutions at the beginning of each year, many have a hard time sticking to their goals. According to a survey from Statista , out of people in the U.S. who are setting New Year’s resolutions this year, 44 percent want to exercise more, 42 percent want to eat healthier and 34 percent want to spend more time with friends and family. Making your resolutions realistic will give you a better chance of sticking to your goals. Here are some tips from the American Psychological Association to keep you on track for the new year.

Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking.
