t some point in their lives, 80% of Americans will experience some sort of back pain. Fortunately for those suffering in Newnan, Peachtree City and surrounding areas, Georgia Bone and Joint offers comprehensive and convenient spine care close to home at its all-inclusive Spine Center on the campus of Georgia Bone and Joint. Georgia Bone and Joint’s Spine Center has one mission: to provide a team approach to minimally invasive spine care so that patients can return to their normal lives as quickly as possible. Built to provide patient-centered care, the Spine Center at Georgia Bone and Joint includes everything a patient might need from the first appointment to post-surgical care under one roof. The Spine Center offers a continuum of care with fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons specializing in spine surgery, spine specific physical therapists, x-ray, MRI, and

staff dedicated to our patients care. Dr. David Love, one of the fellowship trained spine surgeons at the center, explains that the vast majority of patients with back pain will never need to visit the operating room. “Most people have one or two episodes of back pain, and 90% of them never need surgery. The goal of treatment is to give them many more good days than bad days without invasive treatment,” he says. Dr. Love continues, “I would say that the vast majority of our patients recover with time and conservative treatment. Very few people have anatomy that immediately calls for advanced imaging, such as MRI, or surgery.” “Because everything is in one place, we can get X-rays scheduled the same day, and the images are back almost immediately. If a patient needs physical therapy or targeted pain injections, I can get them in with someone I trust within a week.”

estern Elementary School hosted its second “Magic Day” Feb. 10, sponsored by Georgia Power. Western Principal Cheryl McChargue said the students had no idea it was happening until they arrived that morning. When the students left for the day on Feb. 9, each grade level transformed their classrooms into a different theme. When the students arrived the next day they walked into engaging classrooms, and all their work was centered around that theme. In pre-K, their room was transformed into a real life game of Candyland. Students did a science experiment with skittles to make a rainbow, and they reviewed colors by playing a human size game of candyland. Kindergarten was set up as a donut shop. Students completed activities throughout the day around their theme and even made homemade donuts at the end of the day. Brrr – first grade turned into the arctic. Students researched arctic animals, jumped on a sight word iceberg, ice fished for nouns, verbs and adjectives, and read stories in igloos. Second graders spent the day camping in the wilderness. They read stories around the campfire, fished for math problems, went sightseeing for their spelling words, and made marshmallow 3-D shapes.

Third graders spent the day in the Western Starbucks Cafe. They compared and contrasted hot tea and coffee, read about how coffee and tea originated, designed their own coffee shop, completed fractions activities, and even enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate at the end of the day. Lights, camera, action – fourth grade was all about Hollywood. They spent the day in the VIP club and wore sunglasses all day. Their content centered around movie productions and all the ins and outs of the Hollywood lifestyle. Fifth graders spent the day in a real life carnival. They earned tickets for solving math problems that they got to cash in for carnival games, played a figurative language escape room, and worked on physical and chemical changes by making and tasting cotton candy, popcorn and funnel cakes. “The teachers worked really hard to make these days possible,” McChargue said. “The students do not realize how much academic work we pack into these magic days.” She said the students think they had fun at school, but teachers are able to jam pack them with grade level standards. “It truly is magical to see the entire staff participate,” McChargue said. “It is not just the teachers. Our office staff, support staff, custodians and school nutrition staff all dress up in magician hats and capes. It is truly a school-wide event.”

ocal Cub Scout Pack 897 will host a “Scouting for Food” event at Cornerstone United Methodist Church Sunday, March 7. Scouts will be collecting canned goods, nonperishables and monetary donations for Bridging the Gap from noon to 4 p.m. in the parking lot. Scouts will be directing traffic, and those who are donating goods won’t have to get out of their cars. Evan Bleecker, cub master for Pack 897, said they hold a community food drive every year as a merit badge opportunity for the Scouts. Usually, local grocery stores let them set up outside so people can buy donations in the store and drop them off on their way out. This year, they had to change their plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic. After the drive-thru event, a handful of Scouts will present the donations to Bridging the Gap.

“One of the biggest impressions we try to make on the Scouts is community service,” Bleecker said. He said they will host food drives, partake in downtown parades and volunteer with Backpack Buddies. “Service is one of the big stresses of what we try to impart on the Cub Scouts,” Bleecker said. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bleecker said it has been a down year for them in participation. He said typical enrollment is 100 Scouts, and this year they have 35. Bleecker said they are having fewer events and gatherings, but packing more into them. He said typically, dens would meet twice a month, and now they’re meeting once a month. He said they are meeting outside at a pavilion with social distancing.

HOW TO VOTE: PRINT BALLOT: Dr. Chad Kessler

SPINE CENTER FROM PAGE 1

Dr. Chad Kessler, a board-certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon and one of the founding members of Georgia Bone and Joint, concurred. “The best thing about the Spine Center is being able to find all-inclusive, stateof-the-art care without having to travel into Atlanta.” Dr. Kessler explains that when he began his surgery practice at PAPP Clinic more than 20 years ago, not a lot of spine surgeries were being done on the Southside. Now, says Dr. Kessler, the options for treating back injuries have expanded dramatically. “We’re constantly evolving to use new techniques and to keep up with state-of-the-art technology.” Dr. Kessler continues, “95% of our patients just need anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and reassurance. But when more treatment is needed, I am very proud of what we can offer at our surgical center for our patients.” Drs. Kessler and Love can perform minimally invasive surgeries such as microscopic discectomies, anterior cervical discectomies and fusions, cervical disc replacement, and kyphoplasty – a

Dr. David Love treatment for spinal fractures – on an outpatient basis at the spine center. Going forward, “There is a point where we’ll be able to do outpatient lumbar fusions,” Dr. Kessler says. Treatment at the Spine Center is one of the offerings on Georgia Bone and Joint’s robust list of services available to patients in Newnan and Coweta County. Their full staff of board-certified orthopedic specialists have the experience, expertise, and resources to treat a wide range of injuries and conditions.
