Atkinson Elementary goes to college BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
W
hile many parents of Atkinson Elementary students dream of sending their children to college, they likely didn’t dream it would happen this week. Atkinson is undergoing extensive repairs after the March 26 tornado damaged the school building on Nimmons Street. But students will still have the opportunity to attend classes in person at the Coweta Campus of West Georgia Technical College. With a large number of its students still enrolled in online classes because of the pandemic, West Georgia Tech – a longtime educational partner of the Coweta County School System – was able to accommodate the entire Atkinson operation for the remainder of the school year. "We are so appreciative of our partners at West Georgia Tech, and of the chance for Atkinson students to finish the year on our local campus,” said Dr. Evan Horton, superintendent of Coweta Schools. “This presents yet another opportunity to support Cowe-
ta County students by building on a great partnership that has been developed over a number of years.” Students resumed regular classes Wednesday in the new location after an open house and orientation Tuesday afternoon. “We’re excited about it,” Principal Ben Tarleton said. “We’re so thankful to West Georgia Technical College for giving us the whole upper floor of a building, rent-free. They’ve been very welcoming from the get-go – they want some laughter and joy in the hallways.” West Georgia Tech officials said they are happy to offer the school a short-term solution while repairs are underway. "We are delighted that our Coweta Campus can provide a great setting in which Atkinson students can continue to learn,” said Dr. Kristen Douglas, WGTC vice president for academic affairs, who added the college is “grateful for our decades-long partnership with the Coweta County School System.”

eter Buckley, the former owner of Slumberland, a U.K.-based company that produced luxury mattresses and bedding, recently shared his memories of Prince Philip’s visit to Newnan after his passing. Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited Newnan March 13, 2000, to commemorate the opening of Slumberland USA’s North and South American headquarters. It was announced that Philip – husband of Queen Elizabeth II – passed away on Friday, April 9 at Windsor Castle. He was 99 years old, according to the BBC . When Philip came to Newnan in 2000, he had Sprayberry’s barbecue on Slumberland’s manufacturing floor with local dignitaries, school children and Slumberland executives, according to a previous Newnan Times-Herald article. Philip made the trip because of a long-standing friendship with Buckley. Slumberland was a U.K.-based company that produced luxury mattresses and bedding. The headquarters was located at 10 Christopher Court in the Shenandoah Industrial Park. Buckley said he knew Philip for around 40 years, 30 years minimum. He said he met Philip on many occasions, and Philip coming to Atlanta was a big one for him. He said he remembers dinner with Philip in St. James's Palace, and attending his 80th and 90th birthdays. “When you meet him, he’s one of the most fabulous men you’ve ever met,” Buckley said. Buckley said it was a big deal for Philip to spend two days in Atlanta to attend the opening of Slumberland, and the banquet the night before. “When we opened in Atlanta, I said to Lord Graham – the guy that looked after him a lot – ‘Any chance of Prince Philip coming to the factory in Atlanta?’” Buckley said. “The message relayed to me was, ‘For you, everything is possible.’” “It was fantastic because I knew him, and it’s difficult to know the royal family;
that’s about as far as you get. You never say that you’re a friend,” Buckley added. Buckley said Philip’s personality has been portrayed pretty accurately in reporting about him through the years. “He was not a rude man, but he didn’t suffer fools,” Buckley said. “The man that you read in all the papers was at least as good as what they say.” Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history, having made 22,191 solo engagements. He retired from royal duties in 2017, according to the BBC . “The royal family is part of our heritage, and it’s been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years, and they do a good service,” Buckley said. “They give more back to the U.K. by billions because of who they are, what they are and what they do.” Buckley said he was born during World War II, and he remembers the queen when she was in the Army and remembers when her father, King George VI, died. He said he’s waiting while the family is mourning to see if there’s an opportunity for Buckley to pay his respects to Philip. “I’m just one person,” Buckley said. “COVID permitting, I’ll be there. I’d go to hell and back for Prince Philip.” “I wept when I found out about him. He was such a lovely, respectful man,” Buckley added.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

dents, who have not been in school since March 25. “We’re going to make it as much like what we had at Atkinson as possible,” Tarleton said. That includes a fully functioning cafeteria, which the school system erected in a parking lot adjacent to the WGTC building where most of Atkinson’s classes will be held. “They’ll be able to sit down and eat lunch like normal every day,” Tarleton said. One advantage of moving operations to West Georgia Tech is a built-in opportunity for career education. The college is collaborating with Atkinson’s teachers and administrators for “Field Trip Fridays,” when students will have the opportunity to observe some of the programs offered by WGTC. “Our kids will get out there and see what nursing’s about, or automotive – programs like that,” Tarleton said. “We are excited that our families will get to see the excellent partnership among the Coweta County School System and West Georgia Tech that has provided this opportunity for our Atkinson students to finish the year in a great educational setting,” he added.
