oweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood has been named Officer of the Year for Meritorious Service for making “a significant contribution to the betterment of (his) position.” Wood was honored Monday at the Peace Officers' Association of Georgia Annual Convention in Savannah, where he was congratulated and presented a trophy and a medal by Gov. Brian Kemp. The award for Officer of the Year for Meritorious Service recognizes merit, contribution to the profession or outstanding job performance, including the officer’s impact outside his local area, leadership and contribution to the public safety profession, according to the nomination criteria. “It’s always a great honor to be recognized by the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia,” Wood said. “I am proud of the agency I lead and thankful for the community we serve.”

A Coweta County native, Wood graduated from Newnan High School and began his law enforcement career in 1978 as a patrol officer with the Newnan Police Department. After working his way up to detective sergeant, he moved to the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office in 1995. There, Wood was instrumental in developing the School Resource Officer program in the sheriff ’s office training unit. He also served as president of the Georgia Association of Resource Officers for several years. A state-certified law enforcement senior instructor, Wood was the Coweta County Jail administrator and court services director before being named chief deputy by then-Sheriff Mike Yeager. He was sworn in as interim sheriff when Yeager retired in March 2019, then won a special election later that year to remain in office. Under Wood’s leadership, the CCSO patrols 443 square miles, PHOTOS COURTESY CCSO
