CONYERS Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo The nation’s only traveling rodeo that tells the story of the black American cowboy comes to the Georgia International Horse Park on Aug. 6 – 7. Dust will fly as spectators cheer for some of the nation’s

most skilled black cowboys and cowgirls competing in calf roping, bareback riding, bulldogging, ladies barrel racing, junior barrel racing, ladies steer undercoating and bull riding. Bill Pickett (1870-1932), a famous cowboy from Texas, invented the art of bulldogging – the skill of grabbing cattle by the horns and wrestling them to the ground. Interested in horses, cattle and dogs as a child, it was watching bulldogs take down cattle that made Pickett famous. His method then was to bite the steer on the lip, and then fall backwards to wrestle it to the ground. Pickett and his brothers became synonymous with Wild West show tricks, stunts and performances. He was inducted in the National Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame and celebrated by the U.S. Postal Service in the Legends of the West commemorative sheets. His namesake rodeo is now popular with more than 121,000 spectators annually. The Georgia International Horse Park is at 1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway. The rodeo is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. For

LULA Teepee Glamping at North Georgia Canopy Tours Explore “glamping” in a Native American tepee that also has the comforts of home such as heating, air conditioning, lighting and electrical outlets. The campsites, named after the Seven Clans of the Cherokee Indians, are part of the rich history of north Georgia. Each tepee has been custom-painted with authentic Cherokee symbols, themes and patterns relating to the specific clan camping area where it’s located. While it’s important to note that Cherokees didn’t live in teepees, much less air-conditioned ones, these glammed up teepees can sleep

from one to 10 people on twin bunk beds. Rustic camping sites are also available. While you’re glamping, take in one of NGCT’s zipline tours and record your adventure with one of their GoPro rentals. Other activities include geocaching, cornhole, tetherball, foosball and disc golf. Check the calendar for summer disc golf tournaments. You can also roast marshmallows by the fire, feed koi, bird watch, fish or hike. North Georgia Canopy Tours is about 11 miles northeast of Gainesville at 5290 Harris Road. The former pharmacist, an Italian who grew up making wine, has been keeping up with demand for muscadine wine, along with the winery’s blends of blueberry and peach that also are locally harvested. He operates a no-frills, unfussy winery and tasting bar. Wine tastings are held in the same former garage that the wines are

Summer 2016 made and bottled. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, sit on the patio and enjoy the beautiful garden setting or walk along the blueberry paths. There are several styles of muscadine wines including the perennial top seller, “Hotlanta Red,” a sweet red table wine infused with jalapenos. Warm Springs Winery is at 7227 Roosevelt Highway. Open daily, noon – 6 p.m. For more information, call 706-6552233 or visit www.facebook. com/pages/warm-springsvineyard-winery.

to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Not only part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, but also the National Wilderness Preservation System, the Okefenokee – one of the world’s largest intact freshwater ecosystems – is also a Wetland of International Importance, world-renowned for its amphibian populations which are bio-indicators of global health. As the most extensive blackwater swamp in North America, the Okefenokee is one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. The best way to experience its beauty is to board the park’s 45-minute guided boat tour that will take you down original Seminole Indian waterways. Walk a new, low walkway with bridges to

climb the 90-foot observation tower for a panoramic view. Board “Lady Suwannee,” a train that circles around part of the Okefenokee including a stop at Pioneer Island. Visitors can get up close and personal with some of the native snakes and the park’s young alligators at Eye of Nature, a 25-minute educational show available yearround. Many of these alligators are likely descendants of Oscar, the park’s most popular resident until he died in 2007. The beloved 100-year-old alligator is now immortalized in a unique educational exhibit. Okefenokee Swamp Park is about eight miles south of Waycross at US 1 South. Camping at West Point Lake The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains four pristine campgrounds at West Point Lake, which extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia state line. The lake offers more than 500 miles of shoreline surrounded by 10,000 acres of deep forests and rolling hills. The R. Shaefer Heard Campground is on the southern shore at 101 Shaefer Heard Park Road in West Point. The Holiday and Whitetail Ridge campgrounds, both on the western shore, are on Abbottsford Road in LaGrange. The Amity Campground is at 1001 County Road 393 in Lanett, Ala. In all, West Point

offers 434 campsites total and most have electrical and water hookups. The facilities have grills, tables, dump stations, laundries and showers. Many offer playgrounds, ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and nature trails. At just under eight miles, the Lakeside Trail is ideal for mountain biking with a mix of beginner to advanced sections. Boat ramps are in 34 public recreation areas, including the campgrounds, as well at the two privately owned full-service marinas. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations including public fishing piers at Hardley Creek, Rocky Point and McGee Bridge parks. For reservations, call 1-877-444-6777 or visit www. recreation.gov.
