2009: A year of value,

Day at the Capitol draws large participation.

This year’s visit to the Gold Dome, which is affectionately known to some as the “Dome Roam,” drew one of the largest crowds in recent years. Members started the day at the Georgia Chamber’s annual breakfast, then visited with local legislative leaders, and ended the day with a luncheon.

Members Rock Around the Lanes at Bowling Adventure.

Team building was never so much fun! From lane hopping to Rock ‘n Roll bowling, members dressed in ‘50s gear competed for best decorated lanes and best costumes. Featured draws included collector’s photos in Mr. Joe Crain’s 1950’s car, karaoke on the lanes and at the hop networking games.

Legislative Roundtables create connections.

The Chamber held several legislative roundtables during the year focused on state and national topics. Senator Johnny Isakson returned for a second consecutive year to update Chamber members about progress at the national level.

Evening networking draws big crowds.

One of the most popular networking events, Business-AfterHours, drew large crowds each month at these themed events held by members at their businesses. In March, Belk invited members to a soft launch prior to the store’s opening. More than 125 members attended for the pre-shopping sales and to participate in the $1,200 Chamber pot drawing, which was won by Barbara with Mama Lucia’s.

Speed Networking events build member contacts.

When you drive by the Chamber on the days Networking at Noon takes place, you’ll notice a parking lot overflowing with cars. That’s how popular this event has become. Patterned after “speed dating” events, members use this handy tool to expand their base of contacts and walk away with new leads and referrals.

progress, and connections

Golf outing known as premier Coweta event.

With a rich 24-year history, this signature Chamber fundraiser continues to raise the bar. The 2009 event featured more than 300 golfers and volunteers. Participants use this event to network, build new relationships, and generate new leads. Thanks to strong tournament leadership, the 2009 event earned its largest net profit in tournament history.

New leaders join Board team.

Each year the Chamber brings on new board members to help lead the organization. In August, seven new board directors were nominated and then voted on to serve three year terms beginning in January 2010.

New Leaders, New Year.

Newly elected members of the Chamber ’s Executive Committee begin official duties the first of January.

‘If we don’t know, we can’t grow.’ As a part of the Economic Engagement Series at the monthly Early Bird Forums, members learned about opportunities for Coweta County’s economy in 2009 and beyond and what type of impact these have on their businesses. Charlie Gatlin, Deputy Commissioner for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, was one of many subject-matter experts who shared.

Tradeshow draws more than 1,500 attendees.

The annual BigExpo generated great value for members. New features this year included business builder workshops with information about website and internet marketing and an introduction to social media.

The Chamber brings Value to the Membership Membership in the NewnanCoweta Chamber is designed to bring value to our members. In 2009, the Chamber strived to increase that value to our members and saw 10 significant achievements occur. Listed below, in no particular order, are those 10 achievements in the Chamber’s four business plan divisions.

Business & Community Advocacy 1. I-85 Interchange at Poplar Road. The Leadership Coweta program influenced the receipt of an Interchange Justification Number, a necessary step in the eventual construction of this much needed interstate interchange. 2. Industry Summit. Hosted an Industry Summit to learn about the challenges and opportunities facing each sector. Featured industry sectors included Hospitality, Financial, Retail, Real Estate/Developers, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Education and Government.

Economic Prosperity 3. Economic Development member education. Ten presentations at Early Bird Forums focused on key economic drivers that are contributing factors in attracting quality growth. Another six Economic Prosperity Committee meetings featured experts on relevant subject matters.

Membership & Marketing 4. Improved member communications and tools. Implementation of “Constant Contact” program and the new video messaging increased the quality, professionalism and timeliness of regular communications with members. A new software program added tools to the Chamber web-site like Hot Deals, referral tracking and member hits tracking, and the addition of Office Depot and Constant Contact to the member discount program increased value.

See VALUE, page 7

Leadership class influences key development.

As a part of a Leadership Coweta class project, the receipt of an Interchange Justification Number for the I-85 Poplar Road interchange became a reality.

Educating our members. From the importance of transportation to higher education to tourism, Chamber members heard from the “experts” about the impact of key community drivers on the development of a community. West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan shared the importance of technical education to a thriving community.

Business building on the greens.

One of the most popular opportunities in the Chamber’s Golf Classic is Expo-on-the-Greens. More than 40 companies used this unique tool to help build their business by promoting their products face-to-face with more than 200 influential community leaders playing golf.

SHARING INFORMATION AND INSIGHTS

Industry Roundtables Create Meaningful Conversation The beginning of 2009 marked the second year of a successful Chamber series called “Industry Roundtables.” These roundtable discussions brought almost 100 representatives from various businesses and industries together to address the needs and concerns of our members in the face of the current economic challenges. Information and insights were shared in the market sectors of Big Box Retail, Finance, Health Care, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Real Estate, and Small Business. Additionally, the vitally necessary components of Education and Elected Officials had roundtables of their own as well. Themes that were identified as important to the local economy included: Making “Buy Local” part of our everyday thinking is crucial to the success of local businesses and the creation of sales tax revenues for government to provide services to citizens. County and municipal governments need to work even more closely together with each other and with the business community. Governments need to do all they can to remove impediments and barriers to new and expanding businesses while still maintaining a quality community. Encouraging business and the school system to develop strong relationships for their common good. Water, sewer and the airport were identified as substantial infrastructure resources that must be cultivated as Coweta plans for a successful future. The Chamber’s networking opportunities were lauded as an asset to business and the continued efforts to establish a closer relationship with the Development Authority are desired actions in the coming months and years. The Chamber was pleased to bring these roundtables together and will continue to host them as an ongoing benefit to our members and the community.

Held eight industry roundtables.

During the first quarter of 2009, almost 100 representatives from a variety of industry sectors met in a series of roundtable discussions held by the Chamber. The purpose of the roundtables was to gain information and insights into the needs and concerns of area industries to help the Chamber as it develops new strategies and services for Coweta businesses.

Letter from the Chair and the President

Announcing a cure for the common hectic schedule.

The year 2009 was like no other in living memory. The challenges to businesses in Coweta County, like elsewhere, were formidable. Hard work and sound business practices resulted in the great majority of Coweta County businesses surviving a tough year. We like to believe that the programs of your Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce made a difference, too. The volunteer leadership of the Chamber is the leadership of Coweta County. Their teamwork, ideas, and talent helped make a difficult business year more bearable and, indeed, survivable for our community. The Chamber is YOUR Chamber. We are here for our members with programs, education, networking and leadership, in order to make a stronger environment for your business. Thank you for a great year! We enjoyed being a part of this great community and look forward to serving you and your business in 2010! Jan Alligood

Educated members on key community economic engines.

The Chamber presented the Economic Engagement Series at Early Bird Forums to educate members about the role economic drivers play in helping keep Coweta’s economy strong. In June, the Forum featured a panel of Coweta’s mayors.

‘Key Economic Drivers’ theme of 2009 Early Bird Forums What is it that a community like Coweta needs to know in order to develop a successful local economy? In 2009, your Chamber brought an extremely strong field of speakers and programs to its Early Bird Forums to answer that question and it was one of the best we’ve ever done! Ken Stewart, the Commissioner of the Department of Economic Development and Georgia’s top industry recruiter, explained the relationship between community and the process of economic development at the February Early Bird Forum. In March, Carol Comer, the Aviation Program Director for the Dept. of Transportation, gave an address on the impact of a well-run airport to a community. Then, in April, Skip Sullivan, president of West Georgia Technical College, provided the program addressing the importance of post-secondary education to quality growth. Charlie Gatlin brought his many years of

experience to the May program with his theme of tourism development, a great topic for Coweta and its many attractions for visitors. Some of our neighbors addressed us as well. Our municipal mayors gave a State of the Cities program; County Administrator Theron Gay spoke of the all-important issue of transportation and our local state delegation of Sen. Mitch Seabaugh, Rep. Lynn Smith and Rep. Billy Horne presented at the annual Eggs & Issues breakfast. Education, recreation and healthcare, all important sectors of economic development rounded out the 2009 Early Bird Forums. Good, solid growth is not an accidental bit of luck – it requires experienced people working together in order to provide the community what new and existing businesses require. The Chamber appreciates the wonderful programs that these outstanding individuals presented during the 2009 Early Bird Forum series.

Chamber records banner year with 2009 fundraisers Thanks to our involved members and volunteers, the roster of fundraising events for 2009 was our most successful ever! Our three signature events – the Golf Classic, Bowling Adventure and the BigExpo – gave more opportunities and exposure for member involvement, had more attendees and made more money than ever before. Canongate on White Oak was the venue for the Golf Classic which featured the widely popular “Expo on the Greens,” 36 holes of golf and brought more than 300 golfers and volunteers to make for a most enjoyable day for all. Thirty teams participated in the “Bowling Adventure Rockin’ Down the Lanes,” an exercise in team building that brought 50’sstyle costuming to the party, making for a weird but wonderful bowling and networking experience for members. Finally, our “BigExpo” just gets better and better! We had over 100 exhibits and over 1,500 attendees this year, making the BigExpo Coweta County’s largest trade show and networking opportunity. We happily experienced the most lucrative financial experience in non-dues revenue ever, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and attendees. And this in spite of the most challenging economy in memory! But just as important, if not more so, is the fact that our members got more exposure and had more opportunity to network and build relationships than ever before, too! Thanks to everyone who participated, attended and volunteered to do the work necessary to make 2009 our best year ever for our Signature Events!

‘Think Chamber Members FIRST’ launches in 2009 A simple yet effective economic development tool was launched in 2009 by the Chamber. Called “Think Chamber Members First,” it introduced into our daily thought processes the importance of doing business with fellow Chamber members. “If each of us simply made a $100 transaction with a Chamber member each month, the financial impact of that would be a considerable benefit to our collective prosperity,” said Candace Boothby during her remarks at the 2009 Shareholders Celebration. The beautiful thing about “Think Chamber Members First” is that it requires no additional expense to you or your business. By simply looking to Chamber members to make normal and necessary purchases, you are contributing to their – and our – success. Another effective tool is prominently displaying your Chamber membership decal in your place of business. This allows customers to identify you as a Chamber member and makes that purchasing decision even easier. Finally, the Chamber encourages you to list your products and services and shop online at the “Hot Deals Member Marketplace” on the Chamber’s web site. All that is required of you is to think when you make purchases. Even if you are just filling your gas tank, make sure you do it in Coweta County. That way, a local business is
