AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY

The Coweta-Fayette EMC superheroes take part in the Chamber’s annual Bowling Adventure.

Letter from the chair and the president We are extremely proud of our members, our committee chairs, our board of directors and our hardworking staff for the strong 20ll performance that they made possible. Your Chamber posted an impressive and high-achieving effort that outpaces many of our neighbors. The end result was being recognized as Georgia’s Best and Most Kaiser, Affordable County in Georgia by Chamber Bloomberg Chair Business Week magazine. Although the list of accomplishments is far too lengthy to list here, some of the ones that make us most proud include: Strengthening our financial performance; Boothby, finishing the fiscal Chamber year in the black; CEO and Growing the President reserve fund by historically record amounts; Exceeding growth goals of new and retained memberships in the Chamber; Expanding staff to include a new Vice-President and Director of Strategic Communication due to increasing demands of our fastgrowing Chamber; Facilitating a successful E- SPLOST referendum; Raising $70,000 for the communitywide marketing and branding campaign; Receiving the Georgia Certified Chamber designation; Holding the largest and most successful Big Expo and Golf Classic in history, selling both out 60-days prior to event; and Re-launching the improved Access Coweta website. And there were so many other achievements that we are so proud of (some of which are listed under the “2011 Top Ten Accomplishments” later in this report). We thank you for your membership and strong support of your Chamber of Commerce! We couldn’t have done it without you!

2011 Chamber Board of Directors

Leadership and Performance are Key Drivers of Successful Organizational Performance It takes a great organization to help contribute to a great community. Your Chamber has taken many positive steps to ensure that we are able to do the work of an effective and productive chamber to enhance our business-friendly environment and a strong community. Some of the more notable achievements of 2011 include achieving the recognition of being one of a relative few “Georgia Certified Chamber”

designation. This rigorous certification shows the world that your Chamber has reached to the highest plateau of excellence in financial, operational and other areas from the major to the miniscule. We are quite proud of this achievement! The President of the Chamber was promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) title to reflect the level of professionalism and leadership that is recognized throughout the business world as a decision-maker

with full authority to operate as an equal with business decision-makers. The Chamber staff created two new positions that were made necessary due to growth and the need to have staff professionalism reach the level necessary to continue service delivery to our members. The position of Vice-President was created to shoulder some of the responsibilities of the CEO in order to continue to deliver value to our membership and community.

The new position of Director of Strategic Communication was created so that the Chamber’s message can be most effectively communicated to our community as well as the world. As the saying goes, “good is the enemy of great.” Greatness is a goal your Chamber continues to work for and these Organizational improvements of 2011 will seamlessly segue into 2012.

2012 Chamber Chairman’s Letter

2 0 1 1 P r o s p e r i t y Aw a r d s : This award recognizes companies and organizations that have

I am very pleased to be your 2012 Chairman of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber. We are very excited this coming year and the anticipated continuation of Coweta County’s economic progress.

Our job at the Chamber is to educate, advocate and make Coweta truly “Prosperity’s Front Door.” We are the leading county in our region economically and, frankly, are envied and admired for that. We will be working to continue that advantage in 2012. There are so many important challenges before us but these are tempered by our strengths. This year we are looking forward to both the Piedmont Newnan Hospital and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America opening their doors to state-of-the-art medical facilities and the opening of the Newnan Conference Center. We also expect new and expanded businesses to create jobs that will help all to enjoy this blessing. It is my hope that I will be writing next year’s Annual Report letter as positive as Vicki’s this year. We have a superior place to call home, so let’s all work together to make it happen in 2012.

Economic Prosperity Council

Community Development Continues to Soar in Coweta Economic development is absolutely critical to the continued success of any community. It is not uncommon for a county to work hard to better itself, and then begin to slowly descend again because there is no plan to continue to maintain and progress. Not so in Coweta. The year 2011 birthed the Herron Study of our community, thanks to the financial support of Georgia Power Company and the leadership of the Development Authority. The report showed

Coweta’s many strengths and offered some suggested directions in areas we could improve. The Chamber of Commerce became part of this team effort and helped begin what became a broad-based community action plan involving the entire community speaking with one voice. The Chamber organized an Economic Prosperity Council, a group of experienced and savvy business and gover nment leaders, with the goal of taking the Herron Study to the next

level. An important achievement was the beginning of a community marketing and branding campaign that shows off Coweta’s greatness in a coordinated and consistent fashion. The result is a professionallycreated with strong community input that kicked off its threeyear marketing campaign with “Prosperity’s Front Door” that shows Coweta County as the “door” to success in business, recreation and living a full and prosperous life. The campaign

also “teases” with a stay tuned for more to come-theme that will market Coweta to the world. Of course, the overall goal of all this coordination is to make Coweta an even greater place and allow us to attract the quality of businesses and people that are contributors to our community. We are excited at this progress in 2011 and look forward to continuing our part in a true team effort.

Keeping Coweta County Great Coweta County is simply one of the best counties in Georgia. It offers a wonderful environment to raise a family, a very well-respected school system with top level university and technical college opportunities, a world-class medical care base, fiscal stability and all the government support services one could want. This likely is the reason that Bloomberg BusinessWeek named Coweta County as the “Most Affordable County” in Georgia in 2011. The Newnan-Coweta Chamber’s support of business and community was a factor in ”Keeping Coweta Great,” and it continues that support by making Coweta as businessfriendly as possible. During the

Great Recession, our county struggled with the same challenges but was recognized as having a stronger economic balance than other counties in our region. We are also rebounding more quickly than those counties, and business and job growth are beginning to pick up steam here, too. “Keeping Coweta Great” is more than a slogan for the Chamber. We realize that we have a responsibility to the entire Coweta community to be the primary “voice of business” and are grateful for the opportunity to do so. We hope and intend to do our part in the continuation of a great county’s greatness!

Thank you to our returning Chamber members

Membership Growth for Chamber of Commerce at an All-Time High The membership goals and the member retention goals for 2011 were EXCEEDED in the face of a distressed economy. This is an impressive fact under any circumstances but especially so in 2011. Why did the Chamber post such a terrific membership year? In large part it was because our member’s businesses were growing at the same time. Their involvement with the Chamber grew because our members see the value of heavy participation

in the Chamber. It is an old chamber of commerce maxim that to get the most value out of a chamber membership, the member has to participate in their chamber. This opens opportunities for the member to work into leadership positions, become better known and trusted through increased networking opportunities and to gain acknowledgement through ear ned awards such as Volunteer of the Year and others. The value of our Chamber’s

events and educational opportunities are great for our members who choose to benefit from them. Not only does the Chamber improve but the community at large does as well. We thank our members for helping to make the NewnanCoweta Chamber of Commerce one of the most respected and effective chambers in Georgia. We pledge to continue to look for improvements in our performance to continue to “Keep Coweta Great.”

Chamber Recognizes 51 Long-term Members The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce is honored to recognize a very special group of 51 members who have demonstrated both loyalty and commitment to their business and to their community through their membership in the Chamber. These members represent a collective voice of 5,552 employees. Their ongoing membership makes each of them distinct and worthy of recognition for their continuous years of membership. The most senior member is Crain Oil Company with 47 continuous years of membership. “This type of loyalty and commitment is what allows the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce to provide an effective and cohesive business advocacy,” said Vicki Kaiser, the 2011 Chair of the Chamber. “Coweta County is fortunate to have these businesses here to provide jobs, a strong tax base and leadership in our community.” As of first quarter of 2011, the following companies are being honored for their long-term memberships in the NewnanCoweta Chamber of Commerce:

Chamber Votes to Support the County SPLOST November 18, 2011 – The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce has formally endorsed advocating and educating for the renewal and continuation of Coweta’s onecent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) in March of 2012. It is estimated that about 90 percent of projects identified by the county and cities will be spent on infrastructure such as streets, roads and bridges. The Chamber recognizes that transportation is one of the most important economic development functions for a successful community and is committed to ensuring that Coweta’s transportation infrastructure continues to meet the community’s needs. “After careful and thoughtful examination of the effect of extending the county’s SPLOST, the Board of Directors of the Chamber decided that there were so many projects and improvements remaining to be done that we must continue to fund these by extending the local sales tax,” said Chamber Chair Vicki Kaiser. “The combined effect of aging infrastructure and the pressures of growth have continued here in spite of the recession. Coweta simply must seek fair ways to pay for improvements. Since the funding will be for specific projects and not for the general fund, we feel that the community will benefit directly from these targeted improvements,” said Candace Boothby, president of the Chamber. “Our purpose in advocating and endorsing the extension is educational. We want the Coweta voters to know exactly what improvements will be made and how they will affect Coweta County. We are one of the premier counties in Georgia and we cannot rest on past achievements if we expect to remain a top-tier community,” Kaiser further explained. The current SPLOST expires in December of 2012 and a “yes” vote by Coweta voters will extend the tax for the period of January, 2013 until December of 2018. Revenues collected by the SPLOST will fund a specific set of projects pre-determined by the county and each municipality. State law prohibits any SPLOST monies to be spent for any purpose other than capital projects. No operational or personnel expenditures are

allowed. The plan is to distribute early collections to fund smaller municipal jurisdiction’s projects first. The Coweta County Commission approved the

resolution and intergovernmental agreements to have the election at their Oct. 18, 2011, regularly scheduled meeting. The Chamber’s board met and approved the SPLOST

vote the next day. With an ever growing list of members, the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce is the largest business organization in Coweta County.

The Chamber is an independent, nonprofit organization championing economic prosperity for its members and the greater Coweta community.

2011 Chamber Annual Report — The Newnan Times-Herald — 27

Wayne Pierce of Yamaha accepts the Prosperity Award. This organization transferred the production of the company’s worldwide manufacturing of ATVs to the United States from Japan, adding 200-plus jobs in Coweta County.

also “teases” with a stay tuned for more to come-theme that will market Coweta to the world. Of course, the overall goal of all this coordination is to make Coweta an even greater place and allow us to attract the quality of businesses and people that are contributors to our community. We are excited at this progress in 2011 and look forward to continuing our part in a true team effort.

Our job is made so much easier by the fantastic job done in 2011 by Vicki Kaiser, the board of directors and committee chairs, not to mention the hard work of the staff to pull it all together. A “bestyearever” in so many ways, I am eager to keep up that pace and, McEntire hopefully, go a little farther. Thanks especially to our growing membership which benefits from a strong and successful Chamber working for them every day.
