Piedmont Newnan Hospital is kicking off another season of Walk With a Doc, a monthly community health initiative in which the public is invited to walk and talk with a local physician. With spring – and allergy season – on the way, Dr. John Vickery IV, M.D. of the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia, will lead the first spring-season walk on March 28 at Carl Miller Park, located at 70 Sewell Road. Vickery treats children and adults for asthma, allergic disease and immunologic disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), American College of Physicians (ACP) and American Medical Association (AMA). Walkers are encouraged to arrive by 8:15 a.m. as the walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. Vickery will speak for f ive minutes on asthma and allergies before leading participants through the park. Vickery will be available to answer medical questions throughout the walk.

Participants will receive a pedometer as well as a c h o i ce o f a free T-shirt or water bottle. While the event is free, registration is required. Call Vickery 877-527-3712, visit piedmont.org/walkwithadoc or arrive at the park at 8 a.m. to register for the event. The Walk With a Doc program was established in 2013 in response to a study Community Benefit completed showing the rate of physical inactivity and obesity in Georgia. Piedmont launched Walk With a Doc after a health needs assessment showed that one in four adults in Coweta County is physically inactive and nearly one in three is considered obese. The walks will be held the fourth Saturday of each month. The program garnered such a positive result in 2014 that walks were extended into November. The decision to extendWalk with a Doc 2015 into the fall has yet to be determined.
