Children’s editor and Newnan native Andrew Harwell is creating a buzz in the writing community with his first middlegrades novel, “The Spider Ring.” “The Spider Ring” is about a 12-year-old girl, Maria, who inherits a magical, spidershaped ring from her grandmother. She soon discovers that the ring gives her the power to control spiders. “I was a voracious reader as a kid, and fantasy and horror stories were some of my favorites,” said Harwell, ref lecting about what inspired him to write the suspenseful children’s novel. H a r wel l g r adu ate d f rom Ne w n a n High School in 2004. He then went on to study at University of Chicago, where he received a summer internship with Penguin Young Readers in New York for both his sophomore and junior years. He then moved on to HarperCollins in 2011, where he has been an editor of middle grade and young adult novels since. “My editor asked if I would consider writing a book for kids. I was hesitant at first, because I wanted to keep my career as an editor separate from my writing, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that my love for stories that have one foot in the real world and one foot in something magical was perfectly suited to
