Coweta County will be well represented at the upcoming Georgia State Golf Association Amateur Championship set for July 10-13 at Idle Hour in Macon following a series of 10 qualifier tournaments earlier this month. They include Jason Kimpel, Connor Edwards and Cody Sapp, who were among the top nine finishers at the Atlanta South qualifier held recently at Planterra Ridge in Peachtree City. Coastal Georgia junior and former Newnan High standout Trevor Smith also advanced to the championship field after qualifying among five players at the Southwest qualifier at Stonebridge Golf Club in Albany. The field is limited to 144 male amateur golfers including exemptions. They include recent Coweta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Louis Brown, who is a former GSGA Amateur champion. A competitive qualifier in Peachtree City featured 18 players within three strokes of advancing at the finish, with Michael Standard of McDonough coming out with the last spot in a tiebreaker among three players at 1-over 73. Jason Kimpel of Sharpsburg led local finishers at 2-under while tied for third place. After making the turn at 2-under, Kimpel connected for an eagle at the par-5 10th hole. Another birdie at the 12th pushed him to 5-under before having to battle through the final six holes. Former Northgate High varsity standout Connor Edwards of Newnan also qualified while finishing tied for fifth at 1-under. A steady round included two birdies and only one bogey. Sapp, of Sharpsburg, tied for seventh at an even-72 after finishing strong on the front nine with consecutive birdies on hole No.s 6 and 7 after making the turn at 2-over. Competing in the Southwest qualifier in Albany recently, Smith was among just five qualifiers while tying for second with a 2-under 70, one stroke behind Reb Benton of Douglas.
