Touchdown This Football Season
Family Features Football season can only mean one thing - time to grab the best seat in the house, and we’re not talking about at the stadium. In fact, 77 percent of Americans think the best seat in the house is at home in front of an HDTV, according to a recent survey by McIlhenny Company, maker of Tabasco brand products. Instead of heading to the stadium, keep the tailgate at home and throw a “homegating” party. The ultimate homegate is not only about the football game, it’s about the food. No matter what’s happening on the field, the spread can be the real game-changer. In fact, the survey found the following: • 78 percent of American adults think good food can make up for a bad game.
i n s i de
• Americans spend, on average, 42 percent of the game eating or drinking.
Recipe fo Super Go r od Chili
• Over half of Americans (57 percent) voted the grill as the most important appliance when hosting a homegate.
➤
For a homegate touchdown, banish the boring and serve beer-infused chili, which is sure to please all your family, friends and football fans. For other ways to spice up game day, visit www.tabasco.com.

S. Truett Cathy, founder of the successful Chick-fil-A restaurant chain, died recently at the age of 93. As a business owner, Cathy was known for a variety of things: charity, entrepreneurism, being a firm believer in running his business on faith-based values, and knowing the value of empowering employees. Cathy also placed a tremendous amount of emphasis in the hiring of employees based on “Soft Skills” – a term often associated with a person’s “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships with other people. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler recently discussed the issue of soft skills and the problems many employers are facing in hiring people who do not possess this skill set. The ability to communicate effectively with customers and co-workers, an enthusiastic approach to the workplace, and a healthy work ethic are all examples of soft skills, and employers are beginning to place an even greater value on them. Because Chick-fil-A places tremendous emphasis on making customers “feel like fam-

ily,” they are extremely careful and meticulous about what they look for in potential customer service associates. It was through these qualities that Cathy created a business model that not only created massive profits but also saw a turnover rate of only 5 percent annually in an industry where the average turnover rate among store operators is 35 percent. Ronnie Clotfelter is a clear example of Cathy’s vision for the company. As the store operator for the Thomas Crossroads Chickfil-A, Clotfelter knows the value of leadership and in creating an atmosphere for success. Originally a teacher at Woodward Academy, Clotfelter was inquisitive about the possibility of making extra money. After striking up a conversation with Alan Queen, then the store operator of the Dwarf House in Newnan, Clotfelter was on board.

County is physically inactive and nearly one in three is considered obese. The walks not only encourage physical fitness, but they give participants one-onone time with a physician. The hospital had planned to hold its last walk of the year in August but, after back-toback record turnouts, Piedmont made the decision to continue the program through November.
