NHS student competes at NHBA world barrel racing championship

Newnan High School student Rainey Ayers competed in the 2014 National Barrel Horse Association World Championship held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Ga. recently. “I started riding horses in 4-H and became involved with barrel racing,” said Ayers. “I liked it.” NBHS is the largest barrel racing organization in the world. It has more than 23,000 members around the world. To qualify for its world championship competition, you have to place at district competitions. Ayers said the competition was a week long. The competitors run the barrels twice. If they make it to the final round, they run them again. Her time of 16 seconds did not qualify her for the finals, but she still

enjoyed competing. “It made me learn about horses,” she said. “There were so many people there from other states and countries. I met a lot of people.” She said her favorite part was spending time with her horses and her friends. In addition to competing at the world championship, Ayers is the 4D Champion for the Georgia District 03 Division and winner of a Pro-Rider saddle.
Being the f irst in the county to achieve something is impressive. But being the first in recorded h i stor y i s a not her sor t of accomplishment altogether. Michael Stewart has attained both titles. S te w a r t , of Ne w n a n , made the f irst ascent of a mou nta i n i n A la sk a’s Wrangell-St. Elias range. Accompanied by two climbing friends, Stewart was dropped off on a glacier and spent nearly three weeks both surviving the elements and climbing a mountain no one in recorded history had ever climbed before – an achievement regarded as a “first ascent.” Stewart dedicated the climb on the still-unnamed mountain to his 6-year old daughter, Shiloh. In fact, Stewart has dedicated a first ascent to all of his children and has dedicated a second ascent – being the second in recorded history to climb a mountain – to his

grandchildren. “The first ascents for my children have ranged from climbs in 1982 to 1999,” Stewart said. “We had Shiloh late in life, but I made an ascent for the other children, so I had to do one for her. I told myself I just had to get out there and do it.” With a laugh, Stewart
