hey are talented, athletic, and overflowing with a type of brash confidence their coaches love. Soon all three will play in front of thousands of screaming, rabid college football fans when they take their game to the next level. But that’s not where the similarities end for Newnan senior Emanuel Bridges, Northgate senior James Skalski and East Coweta junior Jeremiah Gemmel. The trio are among the best linebackers in the state with a long list of accolades that began when they played in Pop Warner Leagues back in elementary school. Jump ahead several years, and the honors have continued, including being named to the Newnan Times Herald AllCounty Team last season. The paper trail of awards also includes All-Region and All-State selections. Bridges, Skalski and Gemmel flew on to the college recruiting radar because of their nose for being around the football and their ability to hit hard. If there’s a common denominator between the three football warriors, it’s chasing down ball-carriers and planting them into the turf. All three were among their team’s leading tacklers last year, generating impressive numbers in just nearly every defensive statistical category.

Skalski finished his junior year with 78 tackles, including 10 for a loss. He also had a sack and caused two fumbles. At Newnan, Bridges led the Cougars with 68 tackles, including 43 solo hits. He also forced a fumble. Opponents, meanwhile, might have had a hard time believing Gemmel was just a sophomore last season at East Coweta. After all, he’s already 6-1 and weighs 190 pounds. He also led the Indians with 91 tackles, including six for a loss. The rising junior also picked off two passes in the Indians’ 8-3 first-round playoff season under first-year head coach Steve Pardue. This year, he had fellow Indians’ All-County linebacker Alec Jimerson are the only two starters back on defense for the Indians. Although Bridges and Skalski probably won’t ever be on the field at the same time when their future ACC Conference teams meet, they might just have a chance to exchange greetings once a year. That’s because Bridges verbally committed to Georgia Tech two weeks PAGE 2C ago, while Skalski plans on signing with the Yellow Jackets’ biggest ACC rival, Clemson. Gemmel’s recruiting odyssey is just getting started. Unlike Bridges and Skalski, the Indians’ outside linebacker has two full seasons remaining in his high school career.
