By JEFF ARMSTRONG jarmstrong@newnan.com And then there were seven. The Georgia High School Association has increased the number of football classifications in the state this year to seven — the second time in four years the GHSA has decided to realign all the prep football programs in Georgia. A total of 48 teams will be included in Class AAAAAAA starting this fall, including local teams Newnan and East Coweta, who have moved up from Class AAAAAA. Local team
Northgate will move up to Class AAAAAA this season after competing in Class AAAAA last year. East Coweta and Newnan will be competing in the six-team Region 2-AAAAAAA, losing Langston Hughes, South Cobb and Douglas County from their former region 3-6A. Those three teams will stay in 6A and two of them will join Northgate’s new region, 5-AAAAAA. The familiar foes for Newnan and EC include Westlake, Campbell and Pebblebrook while the new team in the region will be Wheeler High of Marietta. Both local teams will have to travel to Atlanta to face Westlake, while EC will make two trips to Cobb County (Pebblebrook and Campbell) and Newnan
will make one Cobb trip (Wheeler). Northgate will be in a completely new region this year, which features eight other teams. The other foes for the Vikings will be Douglas County, Creekside, South Paulding, Alexander, New Manchester, Tri-Cities, Langston Hughes and Mays. The Vikings possibly caught a break with the scheduling this season, as they have three straight home games from Sept. 30-Oct. 21 and their bye week is slated for Oct. 14. They have to travel to former region foe Starr’s Mill on Sept. 2 and start Region 5-AAAAAA play at Douglas County on Sept. 9, but four of Northgate’s next five games are at home. The Vikings finish their regular season with backto-back road contests at nearby Langston
Hughes (in Fairburn) and in Atlanta for Mays High. The interesting news for the Vikings is five of their eight region foes had winning records last year, so they could be in for a serious battle to qualify for the postseason in 2016. Out of the 48 schools in the new Class 7A, 17 of them are located in Gwinnett County and 10 are located in Cobb County. With that many schools in north metro Atlanta and further, it could put the pressure on the Cougars and Indi-
