Newnan again earning reputation as a
‘hospital town’ By Alex McRae
ome people insist that repeating the past is a prescription for failure. But Coweta County citizens will tell you that where health care is concerned, embracing the past is the key to a brighter future. As the Civil War raged from 1861 to 1865, Newnan became known as the “hospital city of the Confederacy.” By 1864 as many as seven field hospitals in and around Newnan served soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy. Doctors and nurses toiled in tents, private homes and even a former college, working to bind the wounds of two armies and a nation.
A century and a half later, Newnan is once again earning a reputation as a hospital town, and locals couldn’t be happier. Health care facilities are as important to a growing community as dining, retail and entertainment facilities. Within the next two years, three new hospitals will open in Newnan, cementing Coweta’s place as the health care hub of south metro Atlanta. The new 136-bed Piedmont Newnan Hospital, located at the intersection of Poplar Road and I-85, is scheduled to open in 2012. The facility will employ hundreds and have an economic impact of hundreds of millions of dollars while providing first class care to

hundreds of thousands who call Coweta and surrounding counties home. “It’s going to have an enormous impact on this whole area,” PNH President and CEO Michael Bass said. “It’s going to change this county in ways people can’t imagine. Building a new hospital like this has a ‘halo effect’ and the impact goes far beyond medical care. As more and more people see what we’re doing here, more and more businesses will want to be a part of it.” The 362,376-square-foot facility will feature 23 emergency department/treatment rooms, along with 14 beds for postpartum care, 18 for critical care

and 104 for medical/surgical care. The hospital will offer additional medical specialties and attract even more physicians and patients. Leasing on a new medical office building now rising adjacent to PNH is on schedule, and plans for other medical offices near the new hospital are underway. And Piedmont Newnan Hospital isn’t the only new facility generating positive buzz in the medical community. Cancer Treatment Centers of America has already begun construction on a new 50-bed hospital on Newnan Crossing Bypass, less than two miles from the PNH site in the Ashley Park lifestyle center. The CTCA facility – the company’s first in the Southeast – is scheduled to open in late 2012 and is expected to draw patients from across the southern U.S. Bob Mayo, CTCA vice chairman, recently said, “We look forward to becoming a visible and valued part of the Newnan and Coweta County communities.”

The CTCA facility – the company’s first in the Southeast – is scheduled to open in late 2012 and is expected to draw patients from across the southern U.S. Dick Stephenson, founder of CTCA, created the CTCA concept when his mother developed bladder cancer years ago, but was unable to find a treatment facility that offered both the first-rate medical care and personal attention the family sought. Stephenson thought there was a better way and developed the MotherCare treatment protocol. CTCA facilities offer state-of-the-art surgical techniques and chemotherapy, but CTCA programs go beyond traditional treatments, offering patients therapy in the areas of nutrition, exercise, relationships and spiritual outreach. Acupuncture and massage are also part of the CTCA program. “For us, it’s not about radiating a tumor,” Stephenson said. “It’s about healing a person.” Birmingham-based HealthSouth is also joining the Coweta health care scene and recently announced plans to build a 50-bed hospital

will be felt across the entire local economy. Medical experts say that when people from out of town visit a hospital, they don’t just see the doctor – they shop, dine and enjoy other community attractions, providing a huge boost to the local economy.
Health care facilities are as important to a growing community as dining, retail and entertainment facilities.
New hospitals aren’t the only reasons Coweta rates highly in health care circles. Local veterans were delighted when a new 10,000-square-foot VA clinic opened on Sullivan Road in 2009, providing first class treatment for military veterans, including primary care and social services. Coweta is already home to hundreds of private physician’s offices, gyms, spas and fitness centers, all designed to keep residents
