Salutatory speech by Susannah Robuck By SUSANNAH ROBUCK Salutatorian, The Heritage School, Class of 2011 Welcome, everyone, to our graduation. I’m so glad all of you are here to celebrate with us. We’ve waited eighteen years for this day, and it’s hard to believe that it is finally here. In honor of tonight, seniors, under your chairs I have left you something. I would like for all of you to please put them on. Don’t you love sunglasses? I think everyone owns at least one pair. I, myself, have 3 or 4 pairs — one for my purse, one for my car, and one for my pool bag. Sunglasses serve a great purpose. When the sun is too bright, we use them to protect our eyes. We wear sunglasses for other reasons as well. Some of us wear them as a fashion accessory. We have different pairs to go with different outfits. Some of us wear them as a status symbol. You may have heard the phrase “I can’t find my RayBans!” or “Where are my Costas?” In Italy I bought a pair of Dolce et Gabana’s. I was SO excited. And of course, last fall on our senior trip to Cumberland Island, I lost them when Stuart Bready threw me in the ocean. I pitched the biggest fit! Sometimes we use sunglasses to hide our eyes — if we don’t have any makeup on, or if we haven’t gotten enough sleep. We use our sunglasses so we won’t be recognized. But these reasons are forms of deception. There is an old proverb that states, “The eyes are the window to your soul.” I believe this is very true. If you are always wearing your sunglasses, no one can see your eyes. We can alter our physical expressions, appearances, and the tones of our voices to hide ourselves or deceive others, but we cannot change our eyes. There is so much you can tell about a person if you can see their eyes. If someone looks away when you walk by, it might mean they’re shy. If someone raises their eyebrows, they are questioning what you say. If they glare at you, they are angry. If someone looks down and can’t look you in the eye when you ask a question, they are probably lying. And finally, when someone’s eyes are full of tears, they are hurt and sad.

,#9)88)&'M"I#3F

Through our eyes, there are answers. Through our eyes our emotions and feelings are clearly revealed. The truth is in our eyes. The eyes really are the window to your soul, and when we hide them no one gets to see who we really are. So graduates, as we begin a new chapter in our lives, I hope we can take our glasses off a little more often. I hope you use your eyes to visualize your goals and dreams clearly. I hope that when you deal with others, you can look them in the eye, and they will know that what you say is true. I hope that in whatever you do, whether it is college or working, you will feel confident enough to take your glasses off and let people know who you really are, but don’t throw your glasses away — always keep them close by in case you need them. Seniors, we are all going to face struggles and disappointments in our lives. We’re going to want to shield ourselves from the sadness and look away so wear your sunglasses to block out the negative in the world, but when wearing them, be sure to peek around every now and then, so you don’t miss an opportunity. Keep in mind, though, that those who wear their glasses too often become so accustomed to them that they have a hard time seeing the light. Keep your eyes open and often seen. Keep the glasses off but handy. Don’t be fearful. Face these next few years with confidence and determination. Decide what you want, and go for it. Seniors, look at the crowd. Look at each other. And look at me. We are your support.

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us on this fine evening to celebrate our graduation. Woohoo! I know that tonight has taken much preparation, so I would like to thank a few people. First, I want to thank Miss Gina and Miss Comfort for all the planning you had to go through to make tonight fabulous. Second, I would like to thank all the teachers from my past 14 years at Heritage. Without you, none of us on this stage would have made it very far. Your hard work and dedication to help us be the best we can be helped us get here tonight. Third, I want to thank my class. Every single one of you has made my time at Heritage special, and I know that I’ve made friendships that will last my whole life. We have character, we usually talk too much, we tend to make a mess of almost every situation, but we have certainly made our mark on The Heritage School. I am so proud of our class! We are a family. We may be dysfunctional at times, but we are still a family. As I begin this speech I am going to warn you that this is not the typical “share the wisdom of life” valedictory speech. Instead, I would like to share how I’ve spent the last fourteen years of my life. Heritage is a special place to me. I distinctly remember the day I came and visited for the first time. I was around the age of 4, and from the moment I stepped foot inside the classroom, I thought: “Cool toys; I like it here!” Of course, over the next 14 years, I came to love many other things about Heritage. I love the freedom, and how I am accepted as myself. I love the relationships formed between teachers and students, and I love the friendships I have made with students in grades above and below me. As most of you know Heritage is not the typical school, so it is appropriate that the class of 2011 is not the typical class. We are definitely not a “plain vanilla” class. We have the football players, a cheerleader, the brainiacs, the funny people that make every class entertaining (well grog, yeah), the writers, the singers, the soccer players, the actors and actresses, the cross country stars, the basketball players — we have a little of everything it seems, even with only so few

Lydia Powell

in our class. All the underclassmen in their separate grades outnumber us at least 2 to 1, and it could certainly be said that we are the last “small” class to graduate from Heritage. For some reason I remember the year we were deemed small. It was fourth grade, and we only had one class. From then on 20 seemed to be our magic number. In eighth grade we all thought that just maybe we could split into two classes, but it was not to be. As JJ said, we must have scared everyone else off. I’ve learned so much in my 14 years at Heritage. Not just the school stuff — like how to find the area of a parabola, or who the father of history was, or how tall the Eiffel tower is — but a lot about life, too. Many who know me can say that I always try to be peppy and have a smile, so one thing I’ve learned is having spirit makes everything better. This year we can vouch for that. My class is not the most spirited in the whole school. We usually wait until the last day to do an “okay” spirit window. Our cheer typically consists of Emily Gray, Mary Turner, Susannah, Aleisha and me yelling at everyone else to do something they really don’t want to do, and only seven people out of our class dressing out for spirit days. This year we rocked spirit week. Our window turned some heads. Everyone participated in our cheer, each bringing their own unique talent, and our spirit day participation was stellar. No, we didn’t win anything, but we learned to have fun! And how can anyone forget our AWESOME senior prank? While all the underclassmen were trying to get the zipties

off their lockers, we were throwing water balloons and sliding down our blow-up slip and slide. As a class that loves to cause trouble, we did a pretty great job that day. The next lesson I have learned is appreciation. Over the past year we have really learned to appreciate others. We appreciate how much hard work the teachers put into the school, how they push us and help us not only become better students but better people. We appreciate our parents for sharing their wisdom with us, for providing us with everything we have, and for making the occasional lunch for school. We appreciate our friends for keeping things fun and fresh. It is easy to forget to appreciate. I know that sometimes I find myself caught up with everything going on and failing to notice the great people that surround me. We appreciate the experiences we’ve had at Heritage. I know some of us can agree that playing sports here is pretty amazing. We can play any sport we want to! I know I never would have had the opportunity to run cross country anywhere but Heritage, or to participate in Jubilee (the weeklong volleyball/softball/scholar bowl/tugof-war extravaganza)! At Heritage we can experience so many things differently than at other schools. Where else can we have physical challenges like: seeing who can throw a pencil and make it stick in the ceiling while preparing for the next history test, or doing crazy labs with Miss Gina, or building survival shelters in Spakeland? Nowhere but here. The last lesson I’ve learned is persistence. If there is one big lesson I have learned, it is to never give up. A favorite quote of my dad’s is Winston Churchill’s “Never, never, never, never give up.” When he first shared the quote with me, all that I could think was, “Wow, that is a ton of nevers!” Never giving up is a decision. There are many situations where giving up seems like the easiest way out. At Heritage, I don’t know of one teacher who allows us to give up and quit. They push us, make us work harder, and at the end of the year, most students can say, “Wow, I have learned so much, and I truly earned my grade.” If we aren’t doing well in a class, every teacher is always ready to work with us during XL, or to stay after school just

to help us prepare for an upcoming quiz. They put their heart and soul into making sure we succeed and don’t quit. Sometimes I think that our class is continually persistent in annoying teachers. I know Miss Glenda probably could not wait for our junior English class to be over last year, but one thing she never did was give up on us. She gave us more than a few “come to Jesus” lectures, and sometimes we still messed up, but she pushed us and got us through that year. So class, don’t give up! Here are some lessons that only a Heritage student can learn. From our Pre-K years, we learned to share. Sharing is caring, you know? From our time with Ms. Rosalyn in Kindergarten, we learned to always remember our manners. That includes “yes-ma’ams,” “thank-yous,” and never forgetting to be a gracious guest. From our time with Mr. Davis in fourth grade, we learned to always listen; otherwise we might have found ourselves cherry-picking, putting our nose against the wall, or sentenced to the “ice box.” From our time with Mrs. Weaver in fifth grade, we learned that compromise is a powerful tool,

especially when debating the rules of the four square court. From our time with Mr. Marchman in sixth grade, we learned to be ourselves because switching names on the substitute teacher is not the smartest plan. Don’t forget the note-taking skills we learned from Mr. Brown in world history, or all the algebra we learned from our math teachers, because it always comes back to algebra. Be sure to remember we are all Miss Gina’s angels, and that Mr. Stuart’s ponytail in the box in his room is the coolest keepsake ever. Class of 2011, we made it! We spent our years at Heritage learning from the best, and now we can share our “Heritage mindset” with everyone else. As Herb Brooks said to the U.S. Hockey team on the night they beat the Soviets, and as Connor Heindel said when she ran for SGA secretary: “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” My advice to you is to take advantage of all the amazing opportunities you have, and make each and every moment great. Thank you!

Congratulations Class of 2011!

WE HAVE MOVED! 4046 HWY. 154, STE. 218, NEWNAN

Each year, members of the Coweta-Fayette Trust (the management arm of Operation Round-Up) award scholarships to outstanding students.

We take education very seriously here at Coweta-Fayette EMC, and we think it's among our corporate responsibilities to support local students and the educational systems within our service area. That’s why we established the Melissa Segars Memorial Scholarship which is funded through the EMC’s Operation Round-Up program. So, thanks to participating EMC members who contribute to the fund monthly (they allow us to “round up” their electric bill to the next highest dollar and donate the difference), 16 outstanding students will receive assistance to further their education! Yes, we congratulate all of you for your accomplishments and encourage you in your future endeavors.

We help companies keep their business logos in front of thousands of people for PENNIES PER DAY!

V8#"0&W*/%$$

in our class.

June 2011 — The Heritage School Honors — The Times-Herald — 3

Susannah Robuck
