Stray from the Standard Cuisine this
St. Patrick’s Day W hile St. Patrick’s Day may now be most quickly associated with parades and green beer, for many celebrants the day also marks a chance to indulge in Ireland’s native cuisine. When asked to think of Irish cuisine, many people might immediately think of corned beef and cabbage or even the versatile potato. But the Emerald
Isle is rich in culinary history, and some might be surprised to learn Irish cuisine is about more than just the staples served on St. Patrick’s Day. For those who want to try their hand at something new this year, consider “Cider-Braised Chicken and Cabbage” (recipe listed on Page 4) from Margaret M. Johnson’s “The Irish Pub Cookbook” (Chronicle Books).
adras Middle School sixth grader Evelyn Cisneros won a recent poster contest held by the Newnan Coweta Lions Club. Cisneros’s poster was among more than 400,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 28th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International sponsored the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Cisneros’ poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Share Peace.” Lions Club President Stephen Campbell said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Madras Middle School. “It is obvious that those young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” he said. “I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” “Cisneros’s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district, and international rounds of competition if she is to be declared the international grand prize winner,” he added. One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to an award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500. “Our club is cheering for Evelyn as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world” Campbell said. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in 210 countries. In addition to its efforts toward conquering blindness, the organization has made a strong commitment to community service and helping youth throughout the world.

More Residential Construction in Downtown Newnan By KANDICE BELL

ore residential construction is in progress in downtown Newnan at 7 Spring Street. Headley Construction is renovating the building. They specialize in commercial, industrial, and institutional projects with a sideline of doing restorative historical projects, such as the project on Spring Street. The building was built in 1906 as a hotel and is about 8,000 square feet. Murray Printing previously occupied the space. “There will be four 955 square foot loft apartments upstairs and the bottom portion will be for office or retail space,” said Luke Headley with Headley Construction. “We really want to incorporate as much of the original building as we can into the renovation, so many of the floors will be original. There were 13 original fireplaces that we had to brick in. All of the lofts have two bedrooms and one bath and they’re already accounted for.” Headley said the renovation has been in progress for about a year and they want the building to have an industrial feel.
“There will be exposed brick in the building,” said Headley. “There’s lot of natural lighting as well.” Headley said he purchased the building along with his brothers. “We have other loft apartments in the downtown area,” said Headley. “We have a great relationship with the Newnan Lofts and we saw the demand for more commercial and residential space in the downtown area with the University of West Georgia coming to town.” Headley said the office or retail space is still a work in progress. “We’ve been talking with different people who are interested in the space,” said Headley. “It’s negotiable about what type of business occupies the space. We can pretty much design it around their needs.” Headley said the project is expected to be complete by mid April. “Some of our residents may be able to move in April 1,” said Headley. “The outside of the building doesn’t look the way it will when it’s complete. The crew is out here each day working hard, so it’s coming right along.” Other residential construction is underway on Perry Street.
