Coweta County Extension Coordinator Stephanie Butcher has been honored by the Georgia Farm Bureau with its 2015 Young Farmer Excellence in Agriculture Award. “I am so appreciative for the recognition from the Farm Bureau,” said Butcher. “Teaching citizens the importance of agriculture is my favorite part of my job and this award brings more recognition to the work that extension agents do every day to educate communities becoming further removed from food production.” The Georgia Farm Bureau was founded in 1937 and is the largest general farm organization in Georgia. Its Young Farmer Excellence in Agriculture Award is given to a young farmer who earns the majority of his or her income from something other than production agriculture. In addition to being an extension agent, Butcher helps run Windy Hill Dairy Farm, her family’s farm in Senoia, and was one of three finalists for the award. “It’s definitely a family business, and I
help with all aspects when needed,” she said of the farm. “When I’m not working, it’s what I do.” Her husband, Kirk, and three children work the farm, too. “We all work together, and we get along” she added. “It’s just a great way to raise a family.” Butcher originally wanted to go into farm management, but after an internship, she decided she also wanted to work with people and became an agricultural agent. One of the most important parts of her job is making sure people understand farming. There is a huge disconnect with people and knowing where their food comes from and how it’s grown, she said. Butcher has a bachelor’s degree in animal and dairy science and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. As the state winner, Butcher received a Polaris all-terrain vehicle sponsored by Southern Farm Bureau Life and an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau Convention in Orlando, Fla., in January.
