Guns are not allowed in houses of worship in Georgia – unless the church’s board takes action to allow them. State Rep. Bob Trammell told a group of pastors and church leaders about how Georgia law treats guns in church. “You may have questions about the new state law that was passed allowing weapons on church,” said Luthersville Police Chief Danny Hayes, who organized the meeting at the Luthersville Municipal Court. “Weapons are not permitted in a place of worship. If you haven’t done anything in our church that addresses weapons in some way, the default rule is they are not permitted,” Trammell said. “It is a misdemeanor under the law for someone to carry in a house of worship,” he added. Churches “can opt in and allow people to carry,” he said. Churches can choose to allow people to carry weapons openly and/or to carry concealed weapons. Churches of different denominations are governed in different ways, so the exact procedure for a church to address the issue

may vary. The law simply says “the governing authority of the church can decide to permit that,” Trammell said. There is “another wrinkle” if the church operates a school, Trammell said. Guns are not allowed in schools. Some issues are not settled, such as whether churches can change a decision to allow weapons on their grounds or whether churches can permit only certain people – security, for example – to be armed on their premises. Hayes thanked Trammell for speaking to the group and presented the legislator with a medal depicting St. Michael, the patron saint of policemen.
