Ferst cards depict downtown steeples
Readers asked to Fill the Stocking for needy
By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com
Steeples of Newnan’s downtown churches are featured in this year’s Coweta Ferst Christmas card. This is the sixth and final year for Newnan painter Martin Pate to create the card for Ferst which puts books in the hands of young children. The idea of a card featuring the church steeples has been part of Pate’s annual discussions with Janie Lore of Ferst for a while. “Janie and I had talked about it a year or two ago,” Pate said. “Every year we tossed around some ideas.” This year the steeples seemed to be the focal point. Lore talked with Pate about the view of the steeples “from the Greenville Street Park, looking back toward town,” he said. “I kind of imagined how they would look if they were just where I wanted them to be – if I were floating in the air there,” Pate said. In addition, Pate gave the card “a vintage Christmas card look” hearkening back to his own boyhood. He was aiming for a design that was “colorful (with) a little bit of a magical feel to it.” Lore noted the scene shows “children playing around a Christmas tree.” This is Coweta Ferst’s 10th Christmas card. Local cartoonist and artist David Boyd designed cards before Pate picked up the project. The steeples are those of First Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church, First Methodist Church and Newnan Presbyterian Church. Cards may be purchased for $5 for a single card and $28 for a box of 8 at Let Them Eat Toffee, Janelle's Hair Salon, Redneck Gourmet, Lee-King Pharmacy, Corner
The City of Newnan has announced the date and time for the annual Christmas Parade. The theme of “Past and Present” will influence the floats, walking groups, decorated cars and trucks and marching bands that will travel through downtown Newnan on Dec. 12 beginning at 6 p.m. “We are looking forward to the parade this year,” said Gina Snider, city of Newnan public information officer. “It’s always an anticipated activity for the city.” The City of Newnan encourages all community members participating in the parade to bring ideas of past and present. The traditional float contest will be held, offering a cash prize of $150 to each of the following categories: large business, small business, church/school, civic/nonprofit and people’s choice. The people’s choice prize will be voted on by the public on Facebook on Sunday, following the downtown parade. A plaque will be awarded to the people’s choice winner. The grand marshal of this year’s parade will be Newnan’s Police Chief, Douglas “Buster” Meadows. A long-time employee of Newnan’s police department, Meadows began working with the city in 1973. Meadows became Police Chief in 2002, and is a member of several city and community organizations. A portion of the 2015 Christmas parade proceeds will benefit the Coweta Community Foundation. The organization was created from the merger of the Coweta Community Foundation and the Coweta Together Foundation in 2013, and continues to serve the county by connecting local organizations and assisting in the request and division of funding. For more information on Newnan events, and to download a parade application, visit the city website at www.cityofnewnan.org. Applications may also be obtained by emailing sguarnera@ cityofnewnan.com and by visiting Newnan City Hall located at 25 LaGrange St.

‘Tis the season to fill the stocking. Fill the Stocking, The Newnan Times-Herald’s program that lets generous people make donations to help the needy at Christmas, is now active again. Fill the Stocking lets people make a tax deductible contribution that goes to local organizations that offer help at Christmas. Donors can give those gifts in memory or in honor of someone – recognizing someone special while helping people in need. The donor’s name, along with the name of the loved one, will be printed in the newspaper. The amount of the contribution will not be listed, although total contributions will be reported daily in the weeks leading to Christmas. Anonymous donations are also accepted. Contributions will be divided among three local Newnan
