paid off for Miller as she is a member of the Wado International Karate Federation USA Team and will take her talents to the USA Karate National Championships in Pittsburgh July 12-17, competing in her age group.

To say Miller is happy about making the trip to Pittsburgh is an understatement.

“I’m very excited to go to the Karate National Championships. It will be one of the biggest events I will fight in,” said Miller, who now has an orange belt. “There will be enough room at this event for my mom to get a good seat.”

Continued from page 1 Miller’s mom Beth has had a good seat to watch her middle child compete in a sport which has transformed her from a good student who didn’t focus well in school to a great student who now makes straight A’s.

“Karate has really changed Kennedy. She wasn’t bad or a troublemaker, but she didn’t pay attention in class and she would get in trouble for talking,” Beth said. “Since she’s been studying karate, she now has tremendous focus and she makes all A’s.

The whole family is proud of Kennedy and her change is due in part to the teaching she’s gotten from Dr. Tom Kosslow at the Newnan Karate Center.”

Dr. Kosslow is the sensei at the Newnan Karate Center dojo and he has been very impressed with Miller’s work ethic in the short time she has practiced the Wado discipline of karate. She knows most commands in Japanese, how to tie her karate belts and how to count to 10 in Japanese.

“I’m very pleased with how hard Kennedy works.

The intensity and frequency of her workouts is exemplary and she definitely puts the time in,” said Kosslow. “She’s definitely learning self-discipline and she’s gotten medals due to her hard work. She’s a good girl; I’m hoping she sticks with the sport.”

For her part, Miller said she enjoys the way Kosslow teaches.

“I like training with Sensei Kosslow. He’s a nice guy, even though he’s firm,” said Miller, a rising fifth grader at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School. “He encourages me so I don’t stress out if I make a mistake.”

Wado karate has taught Miller more than just how to throw the correct kicks, blo c k s a n d p u n c h e s . It has been a boon to her in many ways besides athletics — it has helped build and strengthen her character as well, which is essential in the martial art. Wado karate also ensures students possess virtues such as integrity, respect, honor, and compassion, among others. One has to be focused in karate,

In the past, Miller had trouble tuning out her classmates while the teacher was explaining the lesson of the day. Now after nine months of karate, her attention span has greatly improved.

“Now when I am in class, I am focused on the teacher at all times,” she said. “I tune everyone else out.”

And tuning everyone out has helped Miller achieve honors in school, like the all-A honor roll. Miller said that she likes making good grades thanks to karate and looks to keep advancing in the martial art when she grows up. She used to play softball and participate in cheerleading, but she doesn’t plan on doing those sports anymore. It’s karate all day, every day for Miller from now on.

“I wa nt to be a Sensei when I grow up — or an airline pilot,” Miller said.

Miller’s mother Beth said she hopes Kennedy medals in the National Championships, but she is more excited about her progress in school.

“It would be nice to have a karate champion in the family, but the most important thing is Kennedy being a classroom champion,” Beth

can’t make peace, they can only make war. When that happens, “peace” comes about only after one side surrenders and lays down its arms—or muffles its grievances.

Small group meetings in sa fe com mu n it y sett i ngs can—and do—make a difference. Meetings like these, where both sides are treated with respect, are now taking place across the nation.

We pray they will make a difference.

But the best way of making peace between people with vastly different but equally valid points of view—based on upbringing, ideology or personal experience—begins with face-to-face, one-on-one talks in calm, quiet places where voices can be heard without being raised.

Two friends of mine have radically different views on everything from politics to college football.

T hey a ren’t shy about spouting those opinions, but until recently, they always walked away good friends.

But one action has always proven ineffective.

The day after the Dallas memorial service, a white woman named Laurella Willis walked 20 miles though Chicago’s majority black South Side wearing a sign that said, “Black America, I’m Sorry!!”

No one doubts her sincerity.

But she was wasting her time.

The record shows that when it comes to improving race relations in America, apologies don’t work.

The idea comes up often.

The most recent “official” action came in 2008, when the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution apologizing for slavery.

In closing remarks on the House floor, Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen said, ”And we begin a dialogue that will hopefully lead us to a better understanding of where we are in America today and why certain conditions exist.”

Eight years later, nothing has changed. The dialogue Cohen hoped to jump start never happened. Such efforts have always resulted in failure. In part, because large groups with large differences

Not long ago, over lunch, things got personal. Then they got ugly. My two pals got so angry they refused to talk—or even be in the same room—with each other.

Peace was nowhere in sight, but after a couple of months, the two were thrown together in a social situation where neither would leave for fear of losing face.

They were finally forced to talk. They did. Not much, but it was a start. They were stunned to realize they could still say a few words without fighting. In time, they met more often and shared a few more words.

Today, they are as tight as ever. They solved the problem between themselves. That approach never fails.

Whites and African-Americans may never agree on what divides us as groups, but we can learn a lot by reasoning together one-on-one, face-to-face.

If nothing else, we will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of each other.

If the attempt fails, no one will feel the need to apologize.

With any luck, we’ll feel like doing it again and hoping for better results.

“Ghostbusters (2016)” is a weak parody Review By: Jonathan W. Hickman The 2016 reboot of “Ghostbusters” is an exercise in lazy filmmaking. Saved only by moments of humor that can be attributed to its winning cast, this unnecessary movie may cover the sizable production budget but is unlikely to spawn a new franchise. And if “Ghostbusters” dies with this iteration, it might not be a bad thing. But, heck, who would have thought that Pokemon would make such a thunderous comeback?

Instead of extending the original mythology introduced back in 1984 under the guidance of director Ivan Reitman, “Ghostbusters (2016)” takes many of the original’s gags and tries to update them with a dash of nostalgia. The central permutation is a gender flip of the key players. So, the ghost boys become the ghost girls in this new age.

On the surface, the casting looks absolutely wonderful. Comic superstar actresses Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig are joined by hot Saturday Night Live current cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones to form the team that won’t be afraid of no ghosts. And it is solely the natural comedic charisma of this combination that makes the concoc-

tion bearable.

Fans of the source material know the score: three scientists and a layman with horse-sense form a team to battle the growing ghost population in New York City. Of course, they face many challenges, including the fact that most New Yorkers think they’re crazy.

Wiig plays the straight-man academic Dr. Erin Gilbert, whose career as a professor is derailed by her interest in the supernatural. Her childhood friend is Dr. Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), who has partnered with the wacky Dr. Jillian Holtzmann (an over-the- top Kate McKinnon), who can instantly build gadgets capable of fighting menacing apparitions. And after encountering and facing down a scary spirit, subway worker Patty Tolan (a stereotyped Leslie Jones) forces herself into the ghost club.

Unlike the 1984 film, the new “Busters” suffer from a chemistry problem.

Not only are they uncomfortable with one another, but this is not a group of ladies you’d necessarily want to hang out with. Compare Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, and Zeddmore, who, after finding fame as ghost fighters, danced the night away in some of New York’s hippest clubs. These were everyman types who

put in a hard day’s work complete with smoke breaks and plenty of booze.

By contrast, the team in “Ghostbusters (2016)” are social pariahs to the extreme.

The breezy script glosses over developing their individual personalities in favor of cutting quickly to the action.

Sadly, what is initially intriguing and quirky never evolves, which makes it hard to root for them when they go to battle.

Ultimately, “Ghostbusters (2016)” is a weak parody of the original. It lacks heart and character development that managed to endear the original’s characters with audiences for decades. The fault lies with the lazy writing and intentionally cheesy special effects that would rather remind us of the source material without trying to do anything fresh or different.

We do get gratuitous cameo appearances by Bill Murray (who has little more than one pointless scene) and tacked on moments with Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson. There is a passing visual reference to the late Harold Ramis, as well. Too bad this 2016 update is a remake and not a continuation of the humorous vibe that made the original a comedy classic.

Coweta County Fire Chief Pat Wilson will be one of 40 fire-service leaders from around the country who will be participating in the Fire-Rescue Wingspread Conference coming up July 18-20 in Racine, Wis.

Five workers suffered injuries, some life-threatening, in a factory explosion Wednesday morning that shook buildings miles away.

At 9:15 a.m., an explosion in the Bonnell Aluminum Plant’s casting operation blew a hole in the ceiling and sent molten aluminum and concrete into the sky.

One worker was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center; three others were transported to the Piedmont Newnan Hospital, and two were treated on site, according to plant manager, Bob Gregory.

“At this time, it’s too early to speculate on what caused the accident,” said Gregory in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “We a re working closely with local fire offi-

According to Capt. Craig Sherrer from the Coweta County Fire Department, the seriousness of the injuries from the explosion ranged from immediate life-threatening injuries to walking-wounded injuries.

Typically, there are around five to seven employees working in the casting area, although an approximate number couldn’t be given by a company spokesman Wednesday afternoon.

Some retired employees of Bonnell, an aluminum-casting plant in downtown Newnan, suggested that the cause of the explosion reported Wednesday morning may have been as simple as a soda can or leaky roof.

Holston’s grandson Tedrick McGill has been working at Bonnell approximately five months.

Holston said she was at work in Fairburn when she received the news of the explosion.

“It’s just a big mess – got blow n ever y where,” sa id Richard Sewell, owner of the boat dealership. “It knocked me out of my chair.”

Rescue workers had left the scene by noon. In an enormous outpouring of support
