A creative tribute Local gallery to offer veterans-focused art exhibit

In the case of “A Good Soldier: An Artistic Tribute to America’s Veterans,” an exhibit to be held at nearby Su f fer i n g A r t i st Ga l ler y i n Hogansville, artist Sarah Swanson wanted to offer an exhibit to honor local veterans.

The artist hoped to offer a collection of mementos from sold iers , work s i n spi red by

servicemen and woman, and to i nv ite a few loca l a r tists to create pieces based on the theme of honoring those who have served the country in the military.

Swanson discussed the concept for a vetera ns-i nspi red show to her husband, Chris, a h istor y a nd socia l studies i n st r uc tor at New n a n H ig h School (NHS). From there, the

idea began to blossom. “ C h r i s m ent ione d t he show to ot her facu lt y members at school, and I started to share thoughts with a few artists,” Swanson explained. “Everyone seemed to love the idea and showed a lot of interest.”

Steve Quisenberry, Chair of the NHS history program and director of a variety of student-involved local veteran programs, offered his assistance immediately.

“Chris a nd I discussed t h e id e a a n d , to m e , i t s e e m e d a n a t u r a l o u tg r ow t h of w h at we a re already doing in the history department,” Quesinberry said. “I offered to reach out to veterans in Coweta.”

The artist began to collect photos of soldiers set aga i n st t he backd rop of ba s e c a mp s a nd bat t le f ield s across t he world .

The images were offered by local veterans and the Coweta families of military men and women who died du r i ng wa r t i me or were k i l led i n combat . Swa nson invited eight local artists to create works based on or inspired by t he submissions.

“The contributing artists chose from the photos of veterans and each is creating one or more works in their chosen mediums,” Swa nson sa id. “A ll sizes and styles from charcoal drawings to acrylic paintings will be on display.”

Wo r d spread about the gallery’s unique exhibit and nearby We l l s t a r We s t G e o r g i a Medical Center offered to sponsor the show. “ We a r e s o t h a n k f u l to have the assistance of Wel lsta r West Georg ia ,” Swanson said. “If any funds remain after the show, the m o n e y, a l o n g w i t h a n y donations from the community, will go to local veterans programs.”

Coming together The election is over. Say Hallelujah, y’all.

After the votes were counted, President Obama and President-Elect Trump had a nice meeting and said the right things.

Hillary Clinton’s concession speech was as graceful a message as she has ever delivered.

But despite the politicians doing and saying all the right things, many Americans remain as divided as ever.

That’s normal, but it’s not good.

The best thing a divided country can do now is find a common cause to unite behind, something all Americans can support. Something that doesn’t— or shouldn’t—have a divisive political component.

I have a suggestion.

On November 11, three days after the polls closed, America celebrated Veterans Day. It was wonderful to behold the ceremonies, parades and tributes held from coast to coast.

It was certainly a stark contrast to the ugly days of the Vietnam War, when American men and women in uniform returning from Southeast Asia were cursed and spat upon and called baby killers.

We have made great strides since the end of the Vietnam War in honoring and celebrating those who serve now and did so in the past.

But there is one area in which we routinely fail our veterans.

In recent years, stories have surfaced revealing the substandard care provided at many Veterans Hospitals across the country.

The poster child for this abuse was the VA Hospital in Phoenix. CNN first reported in April, 2014, that 40 veterans had died while waiting to get care at the Phoenix facility. An internal audit by the VA revealed the problem was worse than anyone had dreamed.

That audit, released on June 9, 2014, revealed that nationwide, “more than 120,000 veterans were left waiting or never got care and that schedulers were pressured to use unofficial lists or engage in inappropriate practices to make waiting times appear more favorable.”

If anyone is looking for an issue to unite the nation, this is it.

I’ve worked with and spoken to

hundreds of veterans over the years. VA medical care has come up often. Many veterans said they received excellent care at VA facilities. But many more said they were treated slowly, poorly or not at all.

There is no excuse for this. The solution seems obvious.

If we have a given number of veterans requiring medical care and not enough resources to treat them, we simply need to build more medical facilities, then hire more doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff for those facilities. Then, we make it our goal to see that VA Hospitals are America’s best treatment facilities, not a nagging afterthought.

An increasing number of veterans need mental health care. Hire the doctors and do the job. And hire enough. A VA medical facility will never have a shortage of customers.

Those who ask “How are we going to pay for this?” should be reminded that veteran medical care is not a budget option, but a solemn obligation to the men and women who have paid in advance for VA medical care with their blood, sweat and courage.

If it means letting spotted owls fend for themselves or spending less on champagne and caviar for bureaucrats who party in Vegas, I’m in.

Those who enter the service of their country take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and to serve the nation and its citizens.

We have an obligation to honor that service with our thanks—and by fulfilling our commitment to serve them as they have served us.

If you hear of an elected official seeking “common ground” with political opponents, point them toward a veteran and say, “Start here.”

With a passion for landscapes, Thomas works mostly f rom her home st ud io i n Newnan, using sketches and photos. She said she takes the time each week, however, to work outside painting “en plein air.”

“Plein air painting is an effort to continue studying,” Thomas said. “Those studies have opened my eyes and have brought me new inspiration for future works.”

The artist’s daily routine includes rising early to begin

Coweta A r t A ssociation (NCAA) and often participate in group shows and other projects. I also work on commission pieces like pet portraits, and, when I am able, I offer instruction to a handful of students privately.

The artist added that being a part of Newnan’s art club allows local artists to network and gives each artist considerable visibility he or she might not have otherwise.

“The NCAA is a network of artists — each artist in the group has connections to other artists in different places and

working before anyone in the neighborhood or at home is awake. Thomas enjoys painting from early morning to mid-afternoon, then she steps away from studio work to run errands, do plein air exercises and find local inspiration.

Though the painter is wellknown for her pet portraits, Thomas said she “leans toward nature.”

Thomas works in all mediums of paint, from watercolor to tempura, and most enjoys works inspired by the outdoors.

Subject matter for the artist often includes flowers, sky, and other colorful outdoor staples.

“In the coming year, I want to work larger and lean a bit more toward abstract works,” Thomas said. “I will definitely

Coweta n at ive Ti ffa ny Thomas has been a “local artist” since childhood, having taken classes offered by Newnan art instructor Bette Hickman right here in Newnan more than 20 years ago. Hickman has continued to be a leader in the county arts community — and Thomas has continued to share her talent locally.

Thomas, now 30, said she has always enjoyed fine arts and dreamed of becoming a fulltime artist since participating in those first creative classes during her childhood.

“I always wanted to be an artist and wanted to begin a career immediately following college graduation in 2008,” Thomas explained. “But it wasn’t feasible then and I ended up in retail management for over eight years.”

Thomas admitted that follow i n g t he pat h t h at le d her astray from her lifelong goals left her exhausted and disappointed.

“That work really sucked the creative life right out of me,” she said. “So, I fought to save and open my own space.”

Thomas has been on her own professionally now for five years and noted that her life work life now is just as busy and just as demanding — but is far more rewarding.

“Generally I have several projects going at once,” Thomas said. “I’m active in the Newnan-

Paintings by Tiffany Thomas can be found on display at The McRitchie-Hollis Museum in downtown Newnan. The solo show titled “Spectrum” will be available for viewing at 74 Jackson Street through the month of December.

Several additional works created by the artist can also be seen as part of a rotating collection at Newnan’s Cancer Treatment Center of America, located at 600 Celebrate Life Parkway.

Thomas’ work is currently featured and will remain on display through February 2017.

by Wellstar West Georgia and the Newnan High School History Club, will feature works from eight Coweta and neighboring community artists, all depicting images of soldiers based on photos donated by local veterans and their families.

Key speakers will include Hogansville Mayor Bill Stankiewicz and State Representative Bob Trammell. Art works will be available for purchase and donations will be accepted to benefit local veterans organizations.
