ON THE COVER
IT WAS SURREAL! We couldn’t have asked for a better audience. Let’s be honest, you don’t have an audience of 1200 people for a book launch unless you are Michelle Obama or Oprah Winfrey.
CELEBRATING FATHERHOOD: We’ve heard Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown talk politics but in this issue of EastLife he writes about a subject closest to his heart— his daughters Anna and Grace. In the countdown to Father’s Day, Brown reflects on what fatherhood means to him and how being a dad has changed his life for good. In the candid shot on the cover of EastLife, photographer Wayne Martin, captures some tender moments as Brown, spends time with daughter Grace. More on pages 8-9.

It was a huge honour and privilege to launch the book titled ‘Z-A of Zoroastrianism, ancient wisdom for modern living’ co-authored by Zerbanoo Gifford and yours truly, at the 12th World Zoroastrian Congress in New York. Considering the total population of Zoroastrians in the world barely touches 120,000, having 1200 Zoroastrians (wait, did you just say Zoro who?) delegates that belong to one of the most ancient faiths in the world—gather at the Hilton Midtown in Manhattan was a feat in itself! It was surreal! I do believe that after the initial, uphill task of ideating and writing the first 20 drafts, the book gradually takes a life of its own. It becomes a living entity that guides you to do things you wouldn’t dream of otherwise. This I say out of experience. Five years ago, when I had the opportunity to author Zerbanoo
Gifford: An Uncensored Life, the biography of UK based human rights campaigner Zerbanoo Gifford who been in public life, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine embarking on a US book tour starting with Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Washington DC (including a book reading at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre), Philadelphia and ending with New York. Even as I was still trying to figure out how it all came to be, earlier this month, I found myself at the Times Square with a strong sense of déjà vu. Taking the longest route via Fiji, LA and Newark to reach the Big Apple was also an interesting study in travel and tourism that is flourishing. From the laidback energy at Fiji airport to waiting in the Customs and Immigration line-up at LAX for more than three hours, felt like everyone that was locked-up in a Covid-cage had broken free to travel like never before! The travel feature in this issue will want you to go places starting with the picture-postcard beaches of Rarotonga, where
EDITOR time stands still, and you get to enjoy the iridescent sapphire blue water that is both relaxing and rejuvenating. You have the option of revitalising your spirit with the untouched beauty of Vanuatu. Whether you are looking at diving among colourful coral or exploring wrecks, you are covered for a fabulous island holiday. We’ve also journeyed to the Polynesian dream destination of Tahiti with intrepid traveller Jamie Neben and to Invercargill with photographer Wayne Martin. There’s lots more to explore in this issue with fashion that WOWS, recipes that make you drool, and stories that will make you laugh and cry. Enjoy!

The long-awaited, contemporary art prize with ecology at its core, the 16th annual Estuary Art and Ecology Award was held at the Uxbridge Malcolm Smith Gallery with 20 finalists chosen by well known writer and curator Francis McWhannell, the judge for second year in running. The overall winner of the environmentally themed award was Wesley John Fourie for the work Slow Ride. He received a handsome $4000 for his work of art, which was a tribute to the day he spent kayaking with friend Amber who helped Fourie get over the fear of water.

The atmosphere was buzzing with 110 local business owners networking whilst enjoying cocktail tastings, vegan cheese tastings, delicious nibbles and some even enjoyed a complimentary massage and makeover. The bi-monthly Howick Click event founded by Bo Burns four years ago, with the intention of sharing knowledge, connecting businesses and help grow the economy was a big success. The room was alive with people networking whilst enjoying the ambience of a talented musician and checking out sponsored local businesses. The evening also had two accomplished speakers talk about sales growth and how to tackle HR employment issues. Everyone went home happy with fabulous goodie bags in tow.

Your first column for EastLife was featured … on March 11 2013, and now 100 articles later... wow! I’m so blessed. Life was tough as a malnourished child with rickets and a dad who was tough as nails. How did you change your trajectory? Firstly, my mother, only just 20 who loved and protected me in POW camps. My Faith. Still going, when I could have died, several times. The secret code of success in a maverick’s diary… Do it Differently... but only if it makes it Better, because the ongoing worldwide mantra is ‘Same old, same old! No change, no change! Understand! My inspiration ... The beautiful and brave Human Beings who have consistently ‘put others before self’. My main heroes are, mothers and frontliners. Turning point of my life... The birth www.eastlife.co.nz

of our first child. What ongoing miracle could bring into existence, such a perfect little ‘being’, to which I merely contributed. And then... there were three! I will love them forever and then some... My biggest high... When I was invited to go to the World HQ of Junior Chamber International [JCI] in Miami, Florida for eight years. Jaycees were the greatest! Serving in New Zealand’s military for six years, to honour the brave U.S. military, who saved the lives of my family and me, in WWII. Best advice you’ve practised as you preached as a life coach… Be your best future self, because you are ‘Unique’! We need you! One person you’d like to tango with... We were both 14. She from America. Me, a Kiwi. A fleeting meet upon a ship. We then parted to separate shores, so alas, it was not to be. Yet, we are still ‘much in
touch’, even upon this very day. Craziest thing you’ve done... Coached 158 Jaycee leaders from 60+ countries, 80 of them from Japan, requiring an interpreter... on my own. It was on a ship cruising along the Japanese coast, for two days and nights, me trying not to be sea-sick. Also, making some of my keynotes from a coffin, in appropriate costumes... You’d like to be reborn as… I’d like to be reborn as Me, for the second chance to be better, do better, have better and help better even more than I have done already...
seek to change the stupidest form of government, that being ‘party politics’, the playground of many narcissists! It could be a form of ‘Code of Civility’. But since this can never happen, let the ‘holier than thou’ play in the sandpit of hatred! No wonder the ‘aliens’ watch with amused perplexity, from afar and will never ‘visit’! I will keep writing until... I forget my password...
Humour to me is... The difference between ‘existing’ and ‘living’. Laughter is second only, to ‘loving’, as truly ‘the power ‘medicine’ for happy longevity.
My raison d’être (‘reason to be’)... is to fight as many injustices’ as I always have. If I did not have such beautiful extended family and friends, I would not have been here to write this contribution. Thank you ‘Team Times Media’ and ‘Team Eastlife’.

Father, dear Father Local MP for Pakuranga, Simeon Brown is undoubtedly a devoted husband to Rebecca and a loving dad to three-year-old Anna and one-year- old Grace. In the countdown to Father’s Day, Brown shares an honest account of the role he loves the most! The true joy and responsibility of being dad that includes midnight wakeups, poop explosion cleanups, lots of kisses and 17 stories before bedtime.
“Rebecca and I were told before we had children that, “Having children will change your life, but more than that, it will change you.” We smiled politely and murmured our agreement but didn’t spend too much time thinking about what it meant at the time. You see, we’d heard it all before, multiple times in fact, over the course of the pregnancy. We knew of course that the clichéd words were true but we had no idea just how true they were. I wear many hats, and in my work I’m daily grappling with challenges on behalf of my constituents as well as seeking information to make the best possible calls in my portfolio areas of Transport and Public Service. The work done by MP’s can make a real difference in people’s lives, for good or for ill. But without a doubt my most important and fulfilling job is that of a father to my two beautiful girls Anna and Grace. If I do a good job as an MP but fail in my duty as a father, then I have achieved nothing. Nothing can fully describe the feelings that go through a father’s heart when he first holds that little baby. An unfathomable sense of love and a tremendous sense of responsibility. I certainly felt that when I held Anna in my arms for the first time, and again when we welcomed Grace into the world last year. www.eastlife.co.nz
EastLifeAugust22.indd 9
That squirmy little baby doesn’t need much. Just milk and cuddles. Oh, and midnight wake-ups. And poop explosion clean-ups. And kisses to make the boo-boos better. And walks to the park. And 17 stories before bedtime. They need it and they need it from their dad.
Storytime with daughters Grace and Anna.
But being a father isn’t just important for my girls. It’s important for me. Being a father holds me accountable and is a daily reminder that integrity is essential in the work that I do. As an MP it is often tempting to choose the position or policy which is more palatable or simply seems easier to achieve or articulate. That temptation is shattered before the smiling face of my little girls. For them, and for all the children of New Zealand we need not just what is convenient or sounds nice, but what is true. We need real solutions that we genuinely believe will make a difference, not lollipops, gimmicks or catchphrases. The goofy dad is a bit of a staple of comic TV shows, and I’m sure Rebecca can tell you that I know a bad pun or two, but perhaps it’s easier to focus on the silly side of fatherhood because the joys and responsibilities are so profound that they are difficult to talk about. To all loving dads: Happy Father’s Day. Your job is essential. Thank you.”

MISSION POSSIBLE:
to be the kindest school in the country It is an undercover agency, complete with passports, code names, phrases, agent levels and a secret mission. FARIDA MASTER stealthily enters the gates of Somerville Intermediate School one dark, winter morning to solve the mystery surrounding the surreptitious operation that the young agents are keeping under wraps.
It’s mission possible! The 165 agents at Somerville Intermediate exchange furtive glances and code breakers to work on a covert operation that not everyone at school is aware of. Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise, agent Ethan Hunt would be proud of the rookie agents who are learning fast! The Undercover Kindness Agency (UKA) is single-mindedly focused on targeting kindness. They are on a mission possible to prove that kindness is cool! The agents are taught how to identify someone who needs to be at the receiving end of kindness. The purpose of the mission is to encourage empathy with contagious acts of selflessness. Each week the UKA choose a secret

mission to complete. Principal of Somerville Intermediate, Yolande Franke says the idea was to build the right culture of self-worth and confidence amongst students. “We want to be the kindest school in the country!” she says about empowering and enabling students to build a belief system with the right mindset. “It was a deliberate decision to instil values of kindness and graciousness so that when a students is confronted by a raft of situations at any stage in life, they are equipped to make a choice on how best to respond in a given situation.” The school has been developing the UKA program, and have made an intentional decision not to
publicly acknowledge it. Anonymity is the key to the programme, which in turn adds an element of excitement as undercover agents communicate secretly with their peers and facilitators of the program. “There is no overt recognition as it is not about rewards. It’s an underground operation with no glory attached to it. It’s simply based on the principle that making a difference for someone else through being kind is a reward in itself,” says Franke. Leading the Undercover Kindness
Agency is deputy principal Chris Hall who smiles saying, he couldn’t make it to the CIA, so he did the next best thing — start an undercover agency that encourages generosity of spirit. He quotes Mark Twain saying, ‘Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see. It benefits both the giver and the receiver’. “As a school we have a policy of zero tolerance to bullying and have strategies in place to prevent and respond to cases as they arise. This program has not been www.eastlife.co.nz

be disappointing, but the fact that they did their bit to make a difference is a victory in itself!
“We want our students to feel valued and reach out to support others.”
There are a range of missions that students are onto that shifts the focus from themselves to others in a world gripped by selfies and selfobsession fuelled by social media.
Sometimes it pushes the undercover agent a little out of their comfort zone to reach out to someone who may or may not necessarily reciprocate the kindness. Students are coached that the result may not always be the best, sometimes it can
“If one of our agents finds someone who is sitting alone in school, they may approach them and introduce themselves, tell a joke to make someone laugh or ask them if they would like to play with them. They may hold the door for someone or compliment a teacher,” says Hall.

“Of course, we are not asking our kids to solve everyone’s problems. They need not spend their entire day helping or supporting someone else because we don’t want it to become overwhelming or onerous for our agents,” he says. At the first UKA meeting students chose their agent name and the premise of the agency was discussed. After a series of online orientations, a detailed data base was developed which allows the UKA head office to secretly communicate with agents. “While RAK (Random Acts of
Kindness) are well documented online, the school saw UKA as a way of targeting students who would benefit from the subtle and non-threatening support of their peers,” says Hall. The concept was introduced to the students during an assembly, and they were offered the opportunity to register their interest to be part of a group of people who would not be publicly recognised. The intention was to invest in this group of agents and build them in a space of a collective that is bigger than themselves, says Hall. eastlife | august 2022 |

Dealing with love and loss through art How does one deal with the excruciating pain of losing a 30-year-old son to mental illness? Completely broken, Megan Murphy desperately tried to put the fractured pieces of her life together through art. A well-known artist by profession who has been running the Meganz School of Visual Arts since the last nine years, Megan tried to heal her mind, body and spirit through a sharpened pencil and paintbrush to create some deeply meaningful works of art. Megan and her daughter Greta Umbers, also a talented visual artist, talk to FARIDA MASTER about their current exhibition around loss and love. Showing at the Railway St Gallery, Newmarket, till August 9, the works of art tells a poignant story of dealing with grief. Megan Murphy and daughter, Greta Umbers with artwork When It Floods, Where Will We Be Carried A minute makes a world of difference between life and death. On September 14, 2019, Callan, Megan’s son and Greta’s brother was there in flesh and blood, alive. 60 seconds later, life was extinguished. The spark gone! Trying to process her world that was torn apart in the flicker of a minute, Megan grappled with shock and despair as she tried to pick up her paint brush again. “It took me a year and a half to step back into the studio,” she says of her inner battle of processing the immense loss. The tidal wave of emotional pain was palpable, unbearable. “I had a bursting sensation with chest
18 | eastlife | august 2022
EastLifeAugust22.indd 18
pains. Each time I began to paint, the emotions would rise and tears would follow and I felt I couldn’t carry on. It was too overwhelming, agonising and empty. “I kept thinking as I stared at the canvas, why bother, what’s the point? The absolute worst thing in the world has happened, my son has died, he is no more. These thoughts were overtaking any possible meaning or worth, so the work needed to come from a disconnected yet intuitive place. “I had to step aside and just let them happen. The paintings that finally emerged were small and controlled, not letting me scream, perhaps even looking after me, as I hunched over them, curled up with a tiny brush. And yes, I still
cried, but at least they let me paint them.” That was the beginning of an exhaustive, uphill journey that enabled her to examine her emotions and ground herself. Talking about how art can help heal and make sense of the world, Megan says that art allows one to step into a different zone as you connect with your inner world. “It’s much like writing poetry to express yourself. It’s been incredibly helpful for us,” she says. Trusting the process that allows one to reflect, be mindful and flow with the rhythm has allowed both Megan and Greta find a connection within, occasional objectivity and equanimity along the way.
“With these works that explore grief, consciousness, epigenetics and intergenerational transmission, we would hope to open up a conversation around mental health,” she says of the month of August being devoted to Mindfulness. Megan admits that her previous series Sand Marks explored the connective thread of past and future. It was an unrecognised premonition of that final minute… “It was almost intuitive as there was an explosion in my series of work, a week before he died,” she ponders aloud. It has made her reflect on the concept consciousness and wonder where consciousness is seated. Megan expresses her gratitude for Verona Ramadu from Sowers Trust who runs the Waves course, a grief www.eastlife.co.nz

While the healing journey is ongoing, Megan says there have been moments when she has felt Callan’s presence. “We had Callan’s ashes in an earthen urn for a year after he died. The family went to Mount Maunganui to release the ashes. It was whilst I was there that I heard his footsteps. I turned around thinking it was Greta or my husband Lee. But then I saw no one. I almost felt his presence…as if Callan was standing there beside me.” Greta says she deals with Callan’s death differently. While she doesn’t believe in spiritual dimensions, she agrees that releasing Callan’s www.eastlife.co.nz
EastLifeAugust22.indd 19
ashes in the water “felt as if it was a release for him.” For Greta, the journey of grief, loss and healing has allowed her to dig deep and come up with some powerful works of art. In her practice, Umbers considers how the past informs the present and how the body holds emotional memory. One of the drawings she made as part of this body of work has been selected as a finalist in this year’s Parkin Drawing Prize. The prestigious Parkin Drawing Prize with a major prize of $20,000 was established by Chris Parkin, arts patron and owner of Museum Art Hotel in Wellington. The work had to be sent down to Wellington for the prize.
At 16:34 on September 14, 2019, Callan was alive. At 16:35, his life and the complex patterns of generations past—reaching back, all the way to the stars—collapsed into that single minute as his heartbeat faded away to stillness. There was before 16:34, and now there is after 16:35. The same world but fundamentally different.
Deep in non-thinking
16:34 | 16:35 (the moment of transition between life and death), considers the psychological space formed by loss, and attempts to contend with the dislocating presence of eternal absence, and to reconcile the precariousness of life with the necessity for restoration and continuation. In her practice, Umbers considers how the past informs the present, and how the body holds emotional memory. In 16:34 | 16:35, she examines how grief, loss, and mental instability cause an emotional and cognitive dissonance that alters the rhythm of life, confusing biographical temporality. Her use of graphite generates a play of light that reflects simultaneous timescales, locating one in the past, present, and future. eastlife | august 2022 |

Hidden depths of the deep south Flying south for the autumn, EastLife’s WAYNE MARTIN dealt us an ace after visiting Bluff, Invercargill, Gore and more.
The offer of four days, for free, in New Zealand’s southernmost city was too good to turn down, so I gratefully joined friends, Karin and Brett Wilson, on a recent sojourn. Our first stop was Bluff, home of the famous oysters and one of the locations for last year’s South Sea Spray Motupohue, a creative event where 16 of New Zealand’s best street artists create huge murals. Exiting the car, the salty sea air was thick. We were in awe of the great works, and so a photo competition ensued between me and Brett, which spanned the entire four days of our stay. After taking in the scenery on a trip up to the historic Bluff Hill lookout, we headed into Invercargill, where visiting Buster Crabb, a restaurant recommended by a friend, was a priority. We assumed it was a crab-based seafood joint, but it’s named after Lionel ‘Buster’ Crabb, a Royal Navy frogman and MI6 diver who disappeared on a mission around a Soviet cruiser in 1956. He inspired one of the most famous fictional characters in the

world, Ian Fleming’s James Bond. The food was first class – we had fresh Bluff oysters, blue cod, duck, tuna and carpaccio of beef. So, with generous servings under our belts we headed for nearby Riverton. Our accommodation in Riverton was comfortable, despite the message in the guest book stating: ‘this place is bulldozer bait’. The town is beautiful, calming, and has a perfect surf break underlined with an amazing bed of green rocks, sculptured by
centuries of the Southern Ocean battering its shores. Complimented by a bottle of whiskey and another of red wine, we settled on the sand dunes at Taramea, Howell’s Point Reserve, to watch the sunset as the crisp southerly winds whipped up huge breakers crashing over massive rock formations. After a brisk sunrise walk with my camera – which was continually running out of memory as the scenery is truly a photographer’s dream – we headed for Gore and
Just across the road from the museum is the historic (constructed 1909) Eastern Southland Gallery, one of 18 Carnegie libraries in New Zealand. A superb collection of Ralph Hotere works, gifted to the gallery by the artist, adorn the walls, along with the impressive John Money Collection, including works by Rita Angus, Theo Schoon and other renowned artists. After taking a few obligatory photos of the cliched giant trout and giant guitar, we enjoyed a light lunch in the park then back to the bach for a few quiet drinks. The next day featured the big-ticket item on our agenda, Motorcycle Mecca. On entry to the three-levelled classic bike www.eastlife.co.nz

showcase I was overwhelmed by the pristine condition of timeless works of mechanical art; it was as though they’d just rolled off the factory floor. Not knowing where to point our cameras, we took our time wandering among them. After a couple of hours drooling over these machines, and a bite to eat at the Meccaspresso cafe, we headed to blustery Orete Beach, made famous as Burt Munro’s test track for his land speed recordbreaking motorcycle (aka The World’s Fastest Indian); it proved a most worthy pitstop. www.eastlife.co.nz
EastLifeAugust22.indd 23
The next day, Tautapere was on the list with a local recommendation to stop at Cosy Nook. The stop was well worth it. The picturesque rocky bay is home to weathered holiday shacks, fishing boats and magnificent scenery, reminding me of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. We also visited Colac Bay, another popular surf spot, Monkey Island and Gemstone Beach, where low tide can reveal semi-precious gems including garnet, jasper and quartz.
At Tautapare, the distant breathtaking vista of the mist covered mountains of Milford Sound stood before us, welcoming us to the so-called Sausage Capital of New Zealand. Another round of delicious Blue Cod was called for along with giant whitebait fritters. Later that day (after realising our rental car could not float over rocks!), the very helpful team at Riverton Automotive Centre ensured we secured a ride back to Invercargill where we paid a
visit to Bill Richardson Transport World. As this place is mind boggling, I’d suggest allowing a couple of hours to visit. Mostly, it features vintage trucks, restored to mint condition, as well as a fine selection of ‘30s and ‘40s coupes. However, in addition, it's also home to the 2018 Wearable Arts competition's winning entries. Soon enough, we were up in the air flying back home, bidding a fond farewell to the epic deep south, with which we’d all fallen in love. eastlife | august 2022 |

Exploring Tahiti:
A POLYNESIAN DREAM DESTINATION Tahiti French Polynesia is the largest of the French Polynesian islands known for its black and white sand beaches, surfing and some epic jungle hiking, says our intrepid traveller and chef on a superyacht, Jamie Neben. Tahiti is also the birthplace of the overwater bungalow, the luxurious rooms with its feet in the water that travellers absolutely love. It’s at this Polynesian dream destination that I learnt how to scuba dive. Check out the diving at the end of the runway. There is a neat plane, you can even sit in the cockpit and the shark dive if you’re a bit more game. We arrived in Tahiti by mistake! After leaving Central America, we had engine trouble and decided Tahiti was our best bet at repairs. After a week, we limped into Marina Taina, about 10km south of the main city of Papeete. Almost instantly, we had an incredible view of Moorea, the closest island. This was the best
24 | eastlife | august 2022
EastLifeAugust22.indd 24
place to see the sunset (see picture). Not knowing how long we would be on the island, I ended up helping at a local restaurant Le Cocos (see photo) owned and run by a French couple. It was a lot of fun! It made from some interesting ways to communicate. They somehow convinced me to try Fafaru, a fermented fish dish that smells, and in my opinion tastes of intense rotten fish. I even got to help with a private catering on one of the islands. On one of my first free days, I ventured up into the hills behind Papeete with a local guide. I highly recommended this! The jungle can be dangerous and local knowledge is always interesting.
We started from a restaurant le Belvedere with an incredible view of the lagoon and the city of Pirae and Papeete. It features a full glass wall in the bathrooms overlooking the valley, check it out. The hike is about 15km round trip but worth the effort. On a clear day, you get a great view of a rock formation called the Crown. That night, I checked out the food trucks in Vaiete Square. You can find just about everything you want from great local food to pizza and Chinese cuisine. My favourite was a Thai. Being a chef, I really enjoy exploring the local markets, and the one in Papeete was fantastic. Open most days, if you want the best, get there on a Sunday at 4.30am. There are bbq meats and fresh coconut
milk that you’ll want to try, and they sell out very fast. You can also find some great souvenirs here. Whether you’re into surfing or not, check out Teahupoo on the southwestern coast. It’s host to the Billabong pro surf competition, and in the top 10 deadliest waves in the world. The wave gets up to 7m, you can get a ride out to the break in a taxi boat if you want to see it up-close, you get great views of the island out there also. (See picture) Stop at Mauis beach on the way back. There is a cool sand floor restaurant right on the reef. You don’t want to be in a rush…. the restaurant’s motto is ‘you’ll be served with slowness and eagerness—you have time to enjoy the time.’ Until next time, Nana. www.eastlife.co.nz

World famous DIVING DESTINATION There is nothing like living on island time. Relaxed, revitalised and rejuvenated, far away from life’s daily stress. Known to be one of the happiest places in the world due to its unique combination of sustainability and tradition, this nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is made up of 80 islands once known as the New Hebrides, jointly governed by British and French administrations before gaining independence on July 30, 1980. Home to one of the world’s most sough-after diving destination, Vanuatu with its reputation of gorgeous sites is famous for The President Coolidge, a 650 shipwrecked luxury liner off Espiritu Santo. Now that Air Vanuatu, the national carrier for Vanuatu has resumed
its service in the month of July to the nation’s capital, Port Villa, the islands beckon. An interesting fun fact is that Vanuatu is said to be the most linguistically diverse nation on the planet. More than 100 languages are spoken, making it the world’s most linguistically diverse country. A curious form of pidgin English called Bislama is also widely spoken. Air Vanuatu operates a twice-weekly non-stop service (3 hour 15 minute flight duration) on Boeing 737 from Auckland to Port Vila on Wednesday and Saturday. Vanuatu has opened its borders to fully vaccinated international travellers with no quarantine.
Air Vanuatu Chief Executive Officer, Atu Finau, says the border opening is welcome news for the national carrier. “The reopening of Vanuatu to international leisure travellers is a major milestone. It’s great to see Kiwi travellers return to Vanuatu.” “Flying with Air Vanuatu means passengers enjoy a warm Vanuatu welcome from the moment passengers step onboard,” says Finau. Air Vanuatu is a full-service airline including onboard wifi streaming entertainment to personal smart devices and complimentary inflight service including meals and bar service. Passengers are greeted with the brightest smiles in the
South Pacific as soon as they step foot on the plane. Jonas George, manager Commercial, New Zealand says, “Kiwi travellers have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of when they can travel to Vanuatu quarantine free. We expect to see strong demand from New Zealand travellers. Not only those with flight credits, but also those wanting an overseas holiday close to home, and Vanuatu offers exactly what people are looking for in a holiday in 2022.”

SAY CHEESE At True Vets Ormiston, we understand the importance of good dental health in our pets and therefore August is Dental month at our practice where we offer free dental checkups and discounted routine dentals. In this column DR ADRI ROSSOUW ‘brushes up’ our knowledge of dental disease in cats and dogs and explore ways to take better care of their teeth.
Did you know that an adult dog has 42 teeth, and an adult cat has 30? That is a lot of teeth to take care of! We all know the importance of brushing, flossing, and gargling daily to keep our own pearly whites sparkling. It is just as important to take good care of our pet’s teeth. If we don’t, they will get tartar buildup which can lead to painful gingivitis, tooth root infections and smelly breaths. Bacteria in the mouth can also enter the bloodstream and cause secondary infections! If we don’t take good care of their teeth, they could end up losing them . . . and the pet tooth fairy does not pay out for rotten teeth! So how do we take good care of our pet’s teeth? Brushing is still the most effective way to remove plaque. Most dogs will tolerate brushing if you start them at a young age. Cats tend to be a little trickier but it’s worth a try! You can add a small amount of pet tooth paste for that minty, fresh smell but even without it, brushing will still have the most significant impact. The good news for those that

DR DELSEY is the founder of InstinctualParent.com an online community of parents looking to better their relationships with their children. She shares three basic things that she checks off when her kids are having a meltdown. Some meltdowns feel endless. The books you read, courses you attended or podcasts you heard are NOT helping you or your child. I’ve been there, it feels never ending and sometimes you want to join them and burst into tears yourself.
own a ‘toothbrush attacker’ or a ‘locked jaw and head flicker’ is that there are numerous other options available. Dental chews and treats are very effective at removing plaque. However, it is important to buy good quality chews! Another option is to mix dental food in with your pets’ regular food. We can also add oral rinses and dental prebiotics to their drinking water.
When this happens, I do the basics to help them, and after that…well, read on to know… #1 Environment check. When the environment is overstimulating, I gently pick my kids up, move them somewhere different and that helps their regulation process. I then connect using words, hugs, presence to help them. #2 Access my child’s tears. Underneath anger and frustration, there’s sadness, grief, tears. To move past the ‘aggression’, you need to access those tears. This takes work! And works when you’ve practiced emotional safety and protected their vulnerability. #3 Access tears when connected. If #2 doesn’t work during a tantrum, I wait until my kid is regulated. I use role play to access the vulnerability, identify their
Your pet will still need a dental scale and polish from time to time. Despite our best efforts, we cannot remove all plaque and over time tartar will start to accumulate. By booking your pet in for a routine dental ‘before’ there is any evidence of dental disease, you will avoid smelly ‘kisses’, painful teeth and most likely have something extra in the bank to buy those dental treats with!
sadness, get curious about their struggles. I show them safety in their sadness and tears so that they can access that part of them next time they are feeling angry. Now, if all fails, and there’s no getting through in that moment. I remind myself of this: • I’m focusing too much on my child and not on me. I pause, breathe, allow myself space, I ‘ok’ my tears. • I remember I’m a mother and not a martyr. My child is having a hard time and so am I. • Time passes, and with it, so will this experience. • The ‘perfect’ Instagram family I saw today is a snippet of a bigger moment…parenting isn’t that majority of the time. With these reminders I give myself a hug, I gently rock myself, I baby myself, love myself…and with that I’m again able to understand my kid. There is no shame, no guilt…just reality. If this resonates with you…if you’re on the same page as I, then join me and hundreds of other local parents where we can be guided and fill our cups and go easy on ourselves through this journey.

roundup Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on Church Road’s new range of Gwen wines. Although our wine culture is relatively young, Hawkes Bay with more than 100 vineyards is the oldest wine region in the country and second only to Marlborough. With hot summers and crisp autumn days and an unbeatable environment for grapes to thrive grape wise there is nothing that cannot be grown here. Founded in 1897, Church Road is one of our oldest wineries and the first in New Zealand to craft high quality Bordeaux reds. Previously owned by Tom McDonald who brazed a trail in the 1950’s proving the regions suitability for growing red varietals, (most notably the countries first cabernet sauvignon in 1949), today Church Road is at the forefront of Hawkes Bay’s traditional winemaking techniques. It produces some of our most highly acclaimed award-winning wines. Among the several label tiers from the wineries stable is the new Gwen series named in the honour of Tom’s wife Florence Gwendolyn Brown. Chris Scott, chief winemaker using his expertise and passion has overseen the introduction of many new varietals, collecting some major trophies along the way. ’20 Gwen chardonnay RRP $25 dry and moderate driven by a lighter body and style accentuated with a delightful fusion of acidity and a wave of floral fruit that will not disappoint

Did you say you remember your last hygiene visit and how uncomfortable it was? Why don’t you give our friendly team at dental planet a ring and ask about our new AirFlow hygiene system? You will be surprised at how pleasant your next hygiene experience could be.
BLEPHARITIS DO YOU HAVE IT? KRISTINE JENSEN talks about a common eye condition which you may not realise you have!
WHAT IS BLEPHARITIS? Blepharitis means inflammation of the eyelids— in particular, the lid margin near the base of the eye lashes. The inflammation leads to red, irritable lids and even the eyes themselves may feel dry, gritty or itchy. The lashes may be greasy, flaky, stuck together or there may be crusts wrapped around the base of the lashes. The eye lashes may become misdirected leading to painful ingrown lashes which scratch the eye surface. WHAT IS THE CAUSE? Blepharitis is often caused by an overgrowth of bacteria which lives on our skin, or a microscopic mite known as Demodex which loves to live inside the eyelash follicle. This also contributes to blockage of the meibomian or oil producing glands in the eyelids, leading to dry eye or even eye lid cysts. It appears that some of us are more susceptible to blepharitis than others and the condition is in no way related to lack of hygiene. Blepharitis can occur at all ages with even children suffering from the condition. WHAT HELPS? First, a visit to your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist would be recommended as only slit lamp microscope examination will allow for accurate diagnosis. Once diagnosed a regime of lid hygiene with specialised eye lid shampoo and in some cases topical eye medication will be prescribed. This reduces the microbial load on the lid
margin and helps to reduce the inflammation.
WHY DO I HAVE TO VISIT THE HYGIENIST REGULARLY?
In office lid and lash cleaning is also very beneficial when home management is just not enough.
Oral hygiene affects every aspect of our lives and prevents various health issues not just in your mouth but in your body in general, says ALFRED RICO general manager Dental Planet.
Furthermore, our latest OptiLight technology has proven to kill the Demodex mite and reduce the eyelid inflammation. OTHER TIPS • When applying eye makeup avoid the ‘water-line’ as this is where the precious meibomian glands are situated and makeup can block them. • Never share eye makeup and always remove your eye makeup thoroughly • Replace your eye cosmetics every three months • Take care when having lash treatments such as tinting and lash extensions as the dye and glue can block the oil glands, leading to red, inflamed eyes. • Be wary of eyelash serums— these usually include pro-inflammatory ingredients so while your lashes may grow thick and long, your lid margins will become red and your eyes, dry.

Whether you are eight or 80, oral hygiene is connected to our body’s internal organs. Our mouth lets us nurture our whole physical ecosystem. Daily dental hygiene practice and regular visits to your dentist and hygienist must be part of everyone’s schedule to prevent serious health issues. Improper dental hygiene habits are always followed by multiple dental issues such as cavities or gum disease. These problems can further impair your natural abilities, like eating, speaking etc. You can suffer intense pain and bad breath. It may disturb the normal functions of your heart, kidneys, liver and digestion system. Dental hygiene is the exercise of keeping your teeth decay-free and infection-free. Reasons why proper oral health habits and regular visits to a hygienist is crucial: • Regular dental hygiene practice lets your clinician determine your dental conditions early. Visit a hygienist twice a year
to detect any oral condition or health complications brought about by oral diseases. • When you visit your dentist and hygienist regularly, it helps them detect these oral conditions to create an effective oral plan as per your treatment needs. • Tooth loss is commonly prevailing amongst children and adults. Poor oral hygiene is considered as one of the factors responsible for it. Regular brushing and flossing can help you minimize the plaque build-up and is a good reason to practice dental hygiene daily. However, there are nooks and crannies within our mouth that brushing alone won’t reach and this is where your oral hygiene experts can help. Visit us at Dental Planet Howick, 126 Picton St. Howick. ARE YOU PRESENT? In the month of August devoted to mindfulness, let’s take a deep breath and look within. Whoever said an empty mind is a devil’s workshop, knew nothing about how hard it is to stop that mind running amuck with 60-80,000 thoughts a day. It can get exhausting especially when the mind’s needle is stuck on a particular thought and refuses to move on. In a world of multitasking that has become a part of our DNA, we often read and hear of being mindful. Mindfulness is all about being totally present in the moment. If you are cooking a meal, be fully mindful of the onion you are chopping. Savour the moment without thinking of the Zoom meeting that is scheduled 20 minutes later. Slow down.
If you are walking, be conscious of every step your take. Be aware of how beautifully your body moves. Gradually increase your speed as you soak in the miracle of being alive and fit. Our emotional world is a breeding ground of stress and taking time out to move into a meditative mode will help block the constant chatter. Meditation has nothing to do with mysticism. It is just quieting the mind. Our mind is a composite of our habits, thinking patters, conditioning that is programmed since childhood. Some of it may be filled with debris of insecurities, hatred, greed and more. How do we decondition it? Stop
being slaves to our mind and find peace. Let’s take a moment and be still. Take a deep breath and go deep within. Stay rooted as you listen to your inner self. Imagine that you are surrounded by white light as it gently fills you up with healing energy. Relax. Focus on your breathing as you take a deep breath and slowly exhale. Just for a few moments allow the energy to work for your own joyful state. Now that you are feeling positively rejuvenated, make sure you keep some time each day for that special nourishment, best described as food for the soul.

sound carpet table rug Kiwi wool researchers develop compos
under $4.9m sustainability initiative
The development of a prototype rug which contains no plastic materials brings New Zealand’s wool export industry closer to mass production of fully compostable carpets, according to local experts.
in the first prototyping process to provide a broader range of colours but more trials are underway to find alternatives to the use of alpaca yarnwhich is in limited supply in New Zealand.
Latest Government statistics show textiles, including all forms of carpet, make up around five per cent of New Zealand landfill volumes with over 186,000 tonnes entering the waste stream each year.
Greg Smith, Bremworth CEO, says the development of fully compostable carpet that can be mass-produced in a financially viable way would be transformational.
Dr Kirstine Hulse, sustainability lead at Bremworth, says while wool is a natural fibre which can break down due to its organic composition, most wool carpets use a polypropylene backing and latex which contain synthetic materials— preventing the product from being composted. The new rug, which is hand woven from natural materials including sheep wool and alpaca fibres, was created as part of a rapid prototyping research initiative, designed to test a number of sustainability concepts in textile design. Crossbred sheep and alpaca fibres were used
He says the three-year research initiative was launched in response to demand from consumers for an environmentally sound, endof-life solution for carpet. “While design and quality remain key drivers for most segments, what happens at the end of a product’s useful life is becoming an increasingly important factor in the purchase decision. “Our latest research initiative is designed to help us build a product range which can be meaningfully reused or naturally returned to the earth in a way that resonates with our customer basewithout compromising the design and performance that they care about,” he says.

SO WHAT NOW? NOBODY REALLY KNOWS! DOES ANYBODY CARE? BILL POTTER – Maverick Thinker. Global Speaker. Personal Power Coach. Bill has made personal presentations in 53 countries. Here is a summary of a keynote to 7,600 in Hong Kong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM I created this model too many years ago, in response to the ongoing reluctance by ‘people in power’, to cease their ‘double-speak’ about everything, and just for once, try honesty! It has deteriorated to the point, where you know they are ‘lying’... because their lips are moving! My Model is so simple, it’s embarrassing. Part 1 is called WHAT? You must describe ‘what’ we are talking about or will talk about. Explain its significance to the ‘greater scheme of things’ and reveal what genuine value it adds, to ‘the greater good’ for the most people. Part 2 is called WHY? Now that we know ‘what’ the heck we are all talking about, tell us ‘why’ we have chosen this path, this project or this way of ‘doing things’. Tell us the reason(s) for the decisions, the key purpose for choosing it, and the honest, tested and proven outcome(s). Part 3 is called WHO? Despite the enormous progress of all that can make for a ‘better world’, the persistent levels of incompetence, grows exponentially! This is a gross

disrespect to the genuine people, dedicated to building a better future, who’s best efforts get thwarted by idiots! Part 4 is called WHEN? Consistently we hear the phrase, ‘this should have been attended to, a long time ago’. The sad fact is, that for too many so-called ‘leaders’, they would not recognise the reality of Logic or Commonsense, if these ran up their trouser leg, and bit them on the bum! Part 5 is called HOW? Here it becomes scary! Despite the efforts of many talented, motivated and dedicated people, seeking fairness and consideration for all, the combo of unrelenting ‘ideology’ and the resulting determined dictatorships, will forever be omnipresent. Be alert! OK. My LeaderSpeak© Course, is just for achievers, who want to inspire and lead others. I am a lifelong ‘Maverick’, so I do things ‘differently’. If you really believe in yourself and want BETTER, contact me. Much goodness is coming. All we need is COURAGE! What say you? Cheers. Bill. duitdammit@gmail.com
WHAT’S UP WITH ANGELA
DO’S AND DON’TS OF PLASTER HOMES We’ve all heard of ‘plaster homes’, but what exactly does it mean? How should you approach purchasing a home where it has a component of, or is completely plaster? Well-known local Real Estate agent, ANGELA RUDLING, shares her top tips. You may ask “Is every plaster home a leaky home?” as this is a common belief. Interestingly over the last 70 years, many types of plaster have been used – some have stood the test of time, while others become problematic. I strongly recommend a professional building inspection report which will identify anything of concern and if there are issues, allow you time to reach out for further advice on your buying or selling decision. It is a relatively small price to pay to fully understand the facts about a property and as real estate laws now demand total disclosure, a building report prior to selling or purchasing may enable you to rectify small or large issues prior to engaging in the process fully. Potentially affected homes are likely to have been built between late 1980’s and the mid 2000’s and unfortunately, most internal problems are undetectable to the untrained eye. Commonly in leaky buildings, moisture gets between the exterior cladding of the house and inner walls. With poor ventilation and no way for moisture to drain away, water becomes trapped between the cladding and
framework. Over time, walls can potentially rot, and fungus can grow, causing structural problems and serious health risks to occupants. Typically, Mediterranean-style houses built with a flat roof, no eaves, and monolithic cladding systems, are most at risk. However, every property is unique and not all types of plaster are problematic. Cavity plaster systems or lightweight concrete alternatives are extensively used in the construction of all kinds today very successfully. For assistance regarding buying or selling any style of home, including plaster, either recently constructed or possibly problematic, Angela and/or members of her wellestablished team welcomes your call and can meet discreetly to provide you with initial advice.
If a sale could be on your horizon, Angela would love to chat to you. Ph: 09 215 3002 or 0274770176, E: angela.rudling@bayleys.co.nz
