So, it was pleasing to see the 2021 budget offering a bit more detail including an extra $200 million for Pharmac to pay for more medicines, treatments and personal medical devices for sick New Zealanders.

HIGH FLYER: After two years battling to have the skate bowl at Lloyd Elsmore Park repaired, Aaron Martin, founder of the East Skate Club is thrilled that those who lobbied to have the work done are now enjoying the result of the upgrade. With the revitalised facility now attracting ‘skaters’ of various persuasions, EastLife talked to Aaron about the skate park’s future and the rise of wheeled sports. See pages 14-15.

The Minister of Health, Andrew Little, suggested the added funding will help an estimated 370,000 patients a year. Let’s hope so! In addition, the Government has promised to almost double the number of publicly funded cochlear implants, thus restoring hearing to many people who have lost it. This promise was part of Labour’s 2020 election manifesto and it seems the party is now delivering on that – Brownie points well deserved.

health scenario largely because both these promises seemed tangible whereas, when Mr Little previously announced major structural reform of the health system, I felt there was a lack of detail. Now he has said: “Today, we’re backing that [earlier announcement] with a more than $24 billion investment next year…” He added that keeping New Zealanders healthy was one of the main objectives of the Government’s wellbeing approach to budget-setting and claimed Vote Health is 45 percent – or $7.6 billion – higher than National spent on health in its last year in Government.

Interestingly, the Government also decided not to go ahead with a policy from the last Government of providing a free annual GP visit and eye check for Supergold Card holders. It seems officials believe that such a move would provide limited benefit and the $197 million cost (over four years) could be better spent – no word as to how or on what. That’s a bit of a pity especially when superannuation is not considered a ‘main’ benefit and superannuitants will not ‘benefit’ from the announced increase to benefits. Obviously, the Government thinks the elderly can manage where others cannot.

I cannot verify that figure so I have to take the Minister at his word and I’ll also trust in his promise that there will be more money for hospitals and primary healthcare. Now, it just has to be seen if this year’s budget promises will translate to better health care ‘for all’ and will actually keep people well enough so they don’t need hospital care even if they become sick.

A BETTER HEALTH SYSTEM FOR ALL? Last month, I expressed a few thoughts regarding the Government’s newly announced health reforms and while I could see some advantages I also had concerns about the lack of ‘nitty gritty’ – exactly how many and what major issues would actually be tackled.

Showerdome® can solve such problems, controlling steam, reducing condensation and making the house healthier and warmer. A Showerdome® shower top consists of a clear acrylic dome which prevents steam from forming when fitted on top of an existing shower box. It is a most effective investment. Showerdome® also makes mirror demisters and extractor fans redundant and could save the average household about $250 in energy costs (learn more at www.showerdome.co.nz ). The good news is EastLife has one DIY Showerdome® kit to give away valued at $299 (installation by an official local Showerdome® installer is available at standard pricing) so enter the draw. www.eastlife.co.nz

Torben Nielsen

Most of us get only one shot at life; a photographer, Torben Nielsen has many in some ways and at least two in another. “About five years ago I died. I was in the queue to go on a chair lift for the luge in Queenstown and, basically, dropped dead from a blood clot. Luckily, the guys in the ticket booths were trained in CPR otherwise I wouldn’t be here; it would’ve been a different story.” A much different story or a great deal shorter one at least! Thankfully, there with the grace of God goes Torben, sharing drop dead gorgeous photos of the world with the world. From animals to landscapes and people, Torben’s work covers a variety of subjects. “I don’t stick to a certain genre; I like variety. That does [contrast] with the photos I take for work [as a real estate photographer],” he says. “Overall, photography is a balance of having the eye to see something and having the ability to take it. Really, it all comes down to light and composition,” Although he now lives in Hill Park, Torben was raised in Pakuranga and has lived most of his life in east Auckland, which was where his love of photography began.

8 | eastlife | june 2021

“My first camera was actually David Lloyd’s first camera; he sold it to me when I was at uni’. We were members of the same church [Pakuranga AOG] at the time and became friends,” the former Edgewater College student says, “He introduced me to my wife and was a groomsman at our wedding. So, although he wasn’t a mentor as such, he had a huge influence on my life.” A highly acclaimed wildlife photographer, David Lloyd featured in EastLife’s August 2016 edition. “I gave David his camera back, in exchange for a couple of his prints, not that long ago. He was keen to get it back as he likes to keep every camera he’s ever owned. I’m not so sentimental with my equipment,” Torben smiles. On occasions, Torben will have a location and subject in mind but, most often, he shoots first and plans later. “Because my work photography is so structured, quite often I just shoot from the hip,” he laughs. “One of the photos I have in the [2021 Auckland Photography] festival – The Joy of Playing with Bubbles – was an off the hip shot taken at an event in Totara Park last year.”

When it comes to post-production, art photographers tend to take a different approach to (for example) photojournalists. In fact, this is where much of the artistry comes into frame. Torben’s photographs are taken in colour but, in some cases, he converts them to black and white. “I used to think what you shot is what you should put out; my attitude is completely different now. I do go with what I’ve shot sometimes, but I’ll also crop, delete or add things and more without any qualms about it at all. I’m trying to portray something that’s in my mind, as much as anything else. Photography is an art form and [editing] is part of that,” he explains. “Knowing what looks better in black and white comes down to intuition. By taking away colour [digitally] a photo can focus the eye more on form and shape, making the subject stand out without the distraction of colour.” Most of Torben’s focus has been on local subjects – especially, and for good reason, over the past year or so. However, it was a journey abroad that saw his talent rekindled. “I gave up photography for about 25 years as I was so busy with work – in IT – and family,” he recalls.

“But, in about 2005, we took a trip to Europe. I borrowed my mate’s Canon ‘point and squirt’. I’d had a jigsaw of Cinque Terre in Italy when I was young and always wanted to go there. When we did, I managed to take a photo that was almost the same [as the jigsaw image]. That really inspired me to get back into photography.” Looking ahead, Torben is planning more shoots abroad. “I’ve travelled but not extensively. When the borders open up again, I would love to go back to Europe, especially southern Europe, Scandinavia, and America – New York, New Orleans and San Francisco, in particular,” he says. Art snaps may be his passion but Torben’s ‘day job’ – a real estate photographer, currently with Total Focus Photography – has helped him sharpen his skills. “Everyone asks me, ‘so you’re the one who makes all the rooms look bigger’! I get that a lot, but I don’t use fisheye [lenses],” he laughs. “It’s all time behind the camera, though, and my editing skills have improved vastly. Real estate work requires the best possible composition, so I’ve improved in that way too.” www.eastlife.co.nz

“Because my work photography is so structured, quite often I just shoot from the hip.”

FEST’ IN FRAME Among the hand-picked pictures in frame during this year’s Auckland Festival of Photography (June 1-30), two were taken by Torben Nielson. His shots feature in a Howick Photographic Society exhibition (Uxbridge Art & Culture Centre in Howick) which is part of the festival. “I’ve been in it [the festival] for the last few years. This time I have a couple of photos in the festival: The Joy of Playing with Bubbles and Fire Dancer.” Torben is hoping to hold his own, solo exhibition in future. In the meantime, he’s continuing with quite the winning run, claiming awards in competitions including the Photographic Society of New Zealand National Exhibition, as well as the prestigious Trenna Packer Salver and George W. Glennie photography contests. e from top) Place Photos by Torben Nielsen: (clockwis With Bubbles; ing to Rest For All; The Joy Of Play Thick Of It. The In ; Frog Bell Green And Golden

“I haven’t been entering competitions for very long but I’ve done well,” he says. “Awards may help sell works but, mainly, entering competitions is more about gaining recognition that you’re on the right track.” In particular, since joining the Howick Photographic Society in 2012, Torben says his photography and style have ‘developed’ markedly. “I’ve learned a lot through the Society. They often run competitions and you learn a lot from people critiquing the photos.” Further recognition came last year when he was awarded LPSNZ, an honours distinction bestowed by the Photographic Society of New Zealand.

Q& A Aaron Martin

FOUNDER OF THE EAST SKATE CLUB There has been a skate park in Lloyd Elsmore Park for more than 20 years but in the past few years it had become very dilapidated; how dangerous was it? It was incredibly unforgiving, even for experienced riders. Unlike other parks in South Auckland, the concrete had become really rough and dangerous. The exposed aggregate meant that if you fell, it was like sliding along a cheese grater. Despite many of us wearing safety gear, it was still very nasty, tough on equipment and quite off-putting to parents with youngsters who were just starting out. It was also incredibly slow while rolling, and chewed through your wheels. EastLife understands you started campaigning more than two years ago to have it upgraded. How receptive was the general community and also the authorities from whom you sought help? Various groups of people have campaigned for years to get better facilities for wheeled sports around East Auckland but it has required a lot of commitment to drum up support from skaters and also parents, businesses, schools, clubs and influencers. That’s why I started East Skate Club (ESC) to bring all these people together, to share knowledge and share the workload – we could definitely use more help. As the old saying goes, many hands make awesome skate parks! Did you ever despair that the repairs would be made?

Aaron Martin

Absolutely. Despite being an Olympic sport now, skateboarding (and BMX) are still seen as ‘underground’ or ‘extreme’ sports and get very little support, compared to traditional sports. The reality is these, as well as scooter riding and inline are growing faster than sports such as rugby, league, cricket and netball. So, ESC just needed to spread the word to involve supporters and show the people who make the decisions for our community that there was a demand. Go to any grassy park where there’s a skating facility and the green areas are empty, while www.eastlife.co.nz

The skate park in Lloyd Elsmore Park recently underwent a major upgrade which came on the back of two years campaigning for repairs by wheeled sports enthusiasts. In particular, rollerblader, Pakuranga resident, Aaron Martin was a driving force and, in line with his efforts, he formed the East Skate Club in 2020 with the goal of promoting and supporting wheeled sports in East Auckland. EastLife talked to Aaron about the skate park upgrade and the rise in popularity of wheeled sports.

the concrete areas are full of keen skaters of every age. The bowl has finally been upgraded; is it just okay or could it be better especially for competitive skaters? I’m incredibly grateful for the current upgrade. But the reality is there is a lot more work to do. This park needs to be rethought for the growing demand. Skating has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, so what was considered suitable and durable then is far from adequate now. We need to plan ahead and design a park which is an asset to the community, and to people of all ages and abilities. We need a park which will still be a challenge for skaters over the next decade or so. How keen is everyone to now use the bowl and who uses it? The response has been amazing. It’s great to see so many people down here again. The smooth surface is much more forgiving for young people so parents have been coming down with their kids to ride for the first time. That’s a huge difference from the handful of people who would visit the bowl each week. We’re now seeing hundreds a week. It also shows that the more skate facilities we offer East Auckland, the more the community will support them. Do you have actual club days/ events and if so how often do you gather? I am at the park every day, as are most local skaters. This is one of the major attractions – being able www.eastlife.co.nz

to use it for free, whenever one feels like it. We also have a monthly barbecue on the last Friday of every month, and rely purely on donations from the community which has worked so far! We have Nationals every year and the location fluctuates annually. You are a rollerblader/inline skater, correct? When and where did you start and do you still skate? Correct! A real fruitbooter (rollerblader)! However, I am a big fan of all action sports, skateboarding, longboarding, wakeskating, wakeboarding, snowboarding and more. I began in college. A classmate could do a misty flip, and as soon as I saw what was capable on rollerblades, I was motivated to continue in the sport. I like that its underground, and quite often kids have never seen someone grinding on blades before. What was your first trick and what was the most difficult trick; how long did it take before you were able to tackle tricks? Soul Grind and dropping into a mini ramp and vert ramp . I sat up on top of the old vert ramp at Lloyd Elsmore for weeks before gathering the courage to drop in Have you competed locally, nationally or otherwise and, if so are you still competitive or do you skate for fun? Our sport is pretty small; I could name every blader in the country. I still skate nearly every day but more to keep active, and to

maintain the tricks I already have, just on different obstacles and spots. Before the “Vodafone Xair” event was canned, we would all meet in Auckland and tour down to Wellington where it was held; several vans visited different street spots and parks throughout the country. EastLife understands your own son is taking an interest in wheeled sport, what is his preference and how advanced is he? Zac (7) is a keen BMX racer, he rides scooter at the skate park every day alongside me, and is also really good on a skateboard and rollerblades, but scooter is definitely his No1 preference. I have been taking Zac to the Lloyd Elsmore skate park since he was two years old riding a balance bike. What are three pieces of advice you would give youngsters starting out in the sport? • THRIVE on that scared feeling in your stomach • BE SCARED every time you skate • TALK to people you don’t know – say g’dday; make them want to come back. Motivate others to try stuff, film where required. If you could be Minister of Sport and Recreation for a day what would you do? I would examine those very simple problems hindering the sport and seek ways to solve many of them. When it comes to any sport our tamariki (children) want to be able to do it when they want at minimal cost. In our sport, skateboards cost

$100 but participants can be active anywhere, anytime, therefore, I see more and better skate parks as a way forward. Being post-Covid, the country is seeing health, heart, obesity, mental health and crime rate problems. There never seems to be enough funds for all but there is no better ROI (return on investment) on a council asset than a concrete skate park which can generally be left alone for 20 years. So, as Minister, I would be look to encourage the construction of more skate parks and also as many sporting facilities as possible to keep young people (and not so young) active, healthy, involved and aiming for greater heights. If you could invite any three people (living or dead) to dinner who would they be and why? Gary Vee (among other things, chairman of communications company, VaynerX): Like me he is high energy and fast paced; an entrepreneur since childhood, his hard work has paid off. I love this guy! Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX, CEO, of Tesla plus a whole lot more): What Elon created from various ‘impossible’ business ventures is amazing. Tony Hawk (probably the most famous skateboarder on the planet): what this guy has done for skating around the world with The Tony Hawk Foundation is something I’d also love to do one day – helping towns and cities advocate for work to be completed. eastlife | june 2021 |

Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today centre supervisor, LOUISE SLADEN, talks about preparing first borns for a sibling. No matter how excited you are about the arrival of baby No 2, it’s natural to be worried about how your first born will cope once he/ she is no longer your one-and-only. Now is the time to embrace having only one child and here are some questions we are often asked. When is the right time to tell my first born about a new baby? There’s not one right time or perfect way to tell a child about an impending sibling. In a nutshell, don’t tell them too early. From a child’s perspective, 6-9 months is a long time to wait. When discussing the new arrival, consider your own comfort level and your child’s maturity level. Preschoolers for example, may not grasp concepts of time, so maybe it would be more useful to explain that the baby will arrive close to a special occasion i.e Christmas or birthday. How do I prepare my child for a sibling? It’s hard for toddlers to understand what a new baby is all about. A helpful way to prepare them is by looking through photo albums and talking about when he/she was tiny. Don’t say that the new baby will be ‘a friend for you’ because for the first year or so, this is

unlikely. From your child’s point of view the newcomer is more likely to be a hindrance before becoming a best friend. What are some ways my child can feel part of this new journey? •G o through your child’s baby pictures with them • Visit friends who have young children/babies •P ack a bag for the hospital with Mummy or Daddy •E ncourage involvement in shopping for the new baby e.g. buying a special toy for baby • I nvolve your child in thinking about potential baby names •A llow your child to accompany Mummy to the doctor for her scan and to hear the baby’s heartbeat. What about support crew? It is important to ensure your child is confident and happy with the people who will look after him/her when the baby is born. Try to ensure quality time with grandparents, aunts and uncles or friends who are there to help. Remember no matter how much you prepare your child for a brother or sister, he/she will still act out at times. These problems are a part of becoming an older sibling.

FLOWERS AND MORE

how it all began I’m excited to be talking all things flowers and gifts in the upcoming months and thought I’d start by letting readers know something about me and how I ended up here.

I grew up a horse-riding farm girl who studied at Waikato University, graduating with a Master of Science. I then spent 20 years as a business manager selling microscopes across New Zealand. I also grew up surrounded by family who love gardening. When I was young my grandparents had an amazing garden and everyone who visited had to walk around it. They bred camellias, competed at camellia shows, (both here and overseas), and attended international camellia conferences. Importantly, each of the grandchildren had to know the three main varieties of camellias when asked. I think I was the only one who ever remembered, and I can still name them although, ironically, I don’t grow a single camellia in my own garden. Over time, my husband and I have created our own garden and I have developed a large picking garden. For years I would pick flowers and create bunches to give away to whoever I might see that day – I have always loved the joy a gift of flowers brings to friends and family. In 2017 we bought the Karaka

Country Market, renaming it Paddock to Pantry. My microscope work was slowly phased out and a new stage of life began.

Melanie Kennerley

We began offering small floral and gifting ideas at Paddock to Pantry. Then when we were offered another store location we decided to expand our floral and gift offering. It was there in Takanini that The Wild Rose was born 18 months ago. This new venture gave me additional reasons to grow more flowers and any spare time I have is spent outside planting, picking and planning where I can squeeze in more. As I write, the summer flowers are finishing and I have some 300 ranunculus and anemone bulbs waiting to be planted (about 200 already planted). I am also waiting for the courier to deliver another 200 or so daffodil and anemone bulbs in addition to those already in the ground. Over the coming months I look forward to sharing with readers the joy of growing, picking and giving flowers plus a whole lot more. In the meantime, I hope all the amazing mums out there had a fantastic Mother’s Day and that flowers were part of the day.

Brookby Barn – COMMUNITY HUB, RURAL HAVEN It was 2008 when Chris and Monya Van Wyk arrived in New Zealand from South Africa. Thirteen years, and two children later, the couple realised their dream of purchasing rural land. Now, 12 months on, HELEN PERRY has learned they are fulfilling their vision of creating a café, retail space and community hub.

Just prior to Christmas 2020, Chris and Monya Van Wyk pulled together a series of festive markets all within a vast barn on their eight hectare property at Brookby. With no family nearby, it took the efforts of friends and their local community to help renovate the old barn in just six weeks and then set up the markets which proved to be a huge success. Colourful, innovative and well designed, they included a delicatessen, crafts, décor items, produce, gifts galore, art and even a children’s market where youngsters sold their pre-loved toys, jewellery and other craft work, baking, books and more. “We couldn’t have wished for a better response and, subsequently,

22 | eastlife | june 2021

we decided to take the concept a few steps further,” Monya says. Now the community-focused family has set up a country café in the barn complemented by retail and exhibition bays, function space for special events and a children’s petting zoo (open at weekends). “People today are always busy and quality family life is sometimes sacrificed. We wanted to generate a place where families (and individuals) can come to relax, shop and enjoy our rural setting, hence the idea of a rustic café where we will serve breakfast and lunches with beautiful desserts and deli items also available.” And, it’s all looking very much like she envisioned although Monya says there is still work to do.

However, there was a time when any thoughts of this kind of project were nowhere in the making. “Although we both come from farming backgrounds and always wanted to buy rural, it didn’t seem this would be possible. Then, by chance, we learned that one of Chris’ customers was retiring and selling his Brookby property. “When we viewed it, Chris just said, ‘were buying it!’ and, amazingly our offer was accepted. More incredible because we couldn’t even get into the barn as it was tenanted so we didn’t see what work was involved until we actually moved in.” With Chris, the owner of a company specialising in portable houses, he had no problems visualising and starting work on changes. www.eastlife.co.nz

“But it was the efforts of friends and the local community which really helped us bring it all together,” Monya explains. “We didn’t know anyone in this area but soon locals were offering to help and turning out for working bees.” And, it was the caring attitude of ‘neighbours’ from across rural surrounds which especially warmed her heart — even made her teary. “For example, when one of our special calves became ill, we had few clues how to treat her. Although we’d come from farming families in South Africa, it was very different there. “In despair, I asked for suggestions via the local grapevine. Within no time I had advice and offers of help www.eastlife.co.nz

pouring in from everywhere. Busy farmers came and gave us a hand to establish lifting equipment and a routine to help the calf’s recovery. “I was overwhelmed by their concern and generosity and this inspired us even more in our idea of creating a permanent café and market.” Coming from a long career in marketing, Monya well knows how to set up appealing spaces which attract the eye.

Manukau and Hunters Plaza at Papatoetoe, she still does some freelance work but says, for now her focus is on the café project and its ‘add-ons’. “So far, the petting zoo set up for little ones has two miniature donkeys, several cows, sheep, ducks, chickens, turkeys and guinea fowl. We also have kuni kuni pigs but no goats, they can be very naughty.

Her Christmas markets received glowing comments from visitors with scores of photographs a testament to her designer approach.

“Because we are dog lovers and have two dogs of our own plus a regular ‘visitor’ — Brutus and Lily, our own Labradors and a golden retriever, Bella — we will have a dog station so visitors can bring their canine pets with them.”

opening, Monya says Brookby Barn will operate Wednesdays to Sundays, 8.30am — 2pm. “The retail space is looking great with local artisans and crafters offering unique, boutique-style products such as homewares, old school jars, jewellery, raincoats, shoes, pottery and ceramics, glassware, handmade chocolates, baby items and natural organic drinks to name a few,” she says. “Of course, the café is fully operational too and we will have the loft available for B&B style accommodation soon. Now, we are excited about welcoming, meeting and being a support to locals and east Auckland newcomers. We see Brookby Barn as both a community hub and a rural escape for those living in suburbia.” eastlife | june 2021 |

like a dame!

THERE’S NOTHING Linda Stopforth (left) with Dame Edna.

While the lilac-haired dame with the rhinestone glasses, might wave it off as ‘fake news’ perhaps she would be intrigued to learn there is an outrageous look-alike turning the heads of passersby who walk the seaside suburb.

Tauranga. She seldom budged from her former fence until we moved to Beachlands a couple of years ago,” Linda says.

The impersonator is in fact a plaster bust owned by Linda Stopforth and it started life some 30 years ago as a “granny who was content to age gracefully”.

“It was then I decided granny needed a wash to remove gathering moss before she was relocated to the new property. Unfortunately, gran’s face fell off! I was devastated. She had gone the distance for so long I never envisaged her passing.”

“She was a gift from my daughter, bought from a garden centre in

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 large crown pumpkin, cut in half again and then into 1-2cm wedges • 10g ginger, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1/4 cup sweet chilli sauce • 2 tbsp olive oil Miso Mushroom ‘Mince’ • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion • 3 large cloves garlic • 5g ginger

26 | eastlife | june 2021

Courtesy of The Collective and Olivia Moore (of @ thatgreenolive fame), this recipe provides a modern spin on a classic dish.

METHOD • 200g mushrooms, chopped in a food processor to a meaty texture • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tsp miso • 1/4 tsp chilli powder • 2 tbsp The Collective Plant Yoghurt — Natural • Generous seasoning of salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 200°C. In a large bowl, toss pumpkin with ginger, garlic, sweet chilli sauce and oil to combine. Roast for 35-40 minutes, until cooked through and beginning to crisp.

Sweet Chilli Yoghurt • 1/2 cup The Collective Plant Yoghurt – Natural • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce

To make the mushroom mince, heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant. Add mushrooms and cook for a further 3 minutes, then add soy sauce, miso and chilli powder.

To Serve • 200g pineapple, sliced 2cm thick and cut into wedges • Herbs and condiments to taste

Cook for five minutes, stirring occasionally until mushrooms are tender and liquid is reduced. Remove from heat and stir through

yoghurt. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. To fry the pineapple, heat a little oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add pineapple wedges and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, flipping when beginning to char. To make the sweet chilli yoghurt, whisk together yoghurt and sweet chilli sauce to combine. To serve, arrange wedges in a serving dish and pile over the mushroom mince. Scatter over the fried pineapple and dollop over sweet chilli yoghurt. Garnish with herbs and condiments of choice, and enjoy immediately. Serves two. www.eastlife.co.nz

BOILED LOTATOES – WITH BROWN BUTTER, LEMON, MISO & SAGE SAUCE Thanks to T&G for sharing this easy to make recipe designed to bring out the best from new season Lotatoes.

PERSIMMONS PACK PUNCH! On-trend fruit, locally grown persimmons, have hit the markets and, hopefully, our dining tables. Packing nutrition punch as a source of dietary fibre, magnesium, vitamins A and C and potassium, persimmons originated in China, but have been grown in NZ since the 1870s. Carmel Ireland from 5 + A Day says New Zealand persimmons are versatile and ripe when crisp. “They can be eaten like an apple as the perfect on-the-go snack or used in a variety of dishes such as salads, salsas, cheese boards and more,” she says. “Add them to breakfast too; they pair beautifully with apples, pears, cinnamon and citrus. Try baking with a touch of honey and serve with Greek yoghurt for a healthy dessert. Despite their sweet taste, persimmons are relatively low in calories and high in fibre making them a great healthy eating choice for the whole whanau. They are best stored at room temperature rather than in the fridge, so they’re easy to have on hand for an easy, nutritious snack.

5 + A DAY • • • • • • •

600g Lotatoes, cut into quarters 80g butter 2 tsp lemon juice 1/4 tsp dried sage 1/2 tsp miso Salt and pepper, to season To garnish: lemon zest and dried sage

PERSIMMON & FETA SALAD

Place Lotatoes in a saucepan and pour over just enough water to cover. Cover with a lid and bring to the boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and drain. Run under cold water and remove skins.

• 3 persimmons, sliced • 1/2 red onion, sliced • 4 handfuls mixed salad greens • 2 radishes, sliced • 1/3 cup crumbled feta • 1/3 cup pistachios

Meanwhile, melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes until nutty smelling and browned. Remove from heat and whisk in lemon juice, miso and dried sage.

Place all salad ingredients into a bowl or arrange on a large plate.

To assemble, place potatoes in a serving bowl and toss in the browned butter sauce until evenly coated. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve sprinkled with lemon zest and dried sage. Serves 4-6 as a side.

Combine dressing ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. Drizzle over salad and serve. Serves 4.

VINTAGE

roundup Wine columnist and connoisseur, DENNIS KNILL, gives his view on white and red varietals. When purchasing wine, the grape variety, price, winery and even the label deserve respect. And, as the winds of change continue to sweep the New Zealand wine industry with new varietals, there is much to report. While some wine lovers prefer to drink the tried-and-true, thanks to a new generation of winemakers, we are blessed with enterprising wineries breaking new ground with exciting red and white varietals. As we become more adventurous, vineyards are producing more lesser known varietals. Many wine lovers are content to sip on chardonnay or sauvignon blanc but if it’s adventure you want, take your pick from pinot gris, riesling, rose, gewürztraminer, viognier, albarino, arneis, verdelho, chenin blanc, semillion and gruner veltliner. What’s more, for those drawn to reds, with cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir leading the charge, the magic of syrah, merlot, malbec, pinotage, chambourcin, tempranillo and montepulciano, offer more than just a small voice. Here is a selection of white and red varietals produced by Villa Maria you might like to try:

Dinner in a flash! With Farrah’s Meal Kits now boasting two great new Mexican flavours – Smoky Chipotle and Hickory BBQ – lunch and dinner preparation is easy and tastier than ever. Off course the Mexican range has other great meal kits and the recipe below uses the Enchilada meal kit to ‘supreme’ effect. See TASTE page for more on the two new flavours.

ENCHILADAS SUPREME • • • • •

Farrah’s Enchilada Meal Kit 450g chicken breast, diced 1 onion, diced 1 capsicum, diced 1 cup cheese, grated

• Sour cream • Fresh tomato salsa • 1 bunch coriander, roughly chopped • 1 lime

Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Coat chicken with Mild Enchilada Spice Mix. Heat a pan on medium heat with a dash of oil and sauté onion and capsicum for 5 minutes. Add chicken and cook for a further 5 minutes until cooked through, set aside. Divide the chicken mix equally between the 10 Flame-Baked Tortillas, Place the mix along the centre of each tortilla and roll into “flute”. Place the enchiladas side by side onto a lined tray. Pour the Mild Enchilada Sauce over the enchiladas and sprinkle with cheese. Bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until golden and crispy. Plate up your enchiladas with a dollop of sour cream and top with fresh tomato salsa, coriander and lime juice. Or try something different – great with mince and beans, pulled pork or a plant-based protein alternative! Makes 10. www.eastlife.co.nz

ANN’S WIG ‘THERAPY’

restores confidence Beauty therapist and long-time industry tutor, Ann Sheekey has seen women moved to tears when fitted with a wig which is comfortable, looks natural, suits them and, most importantly, conceals their hair loss. “The words I most often hear are: “I feel human again,” says Ann, who operates Magnolia Wigs from a discreet home studio in Pakuranga. “Hair loss can have a number of causes but, perhaps, the most common are alopecia, the side effects of cancer treatments or other medical issues and thinning or bare patches due to ageing.” Having started life as a beauty therapist, Ann has more than 25 years industry experience in a wide variety of roles. She and husband,

Terry, immigrated to New Zealand from the United Kingdom 14 years ago. On buying a quiet ‘hideaway’ in Pakuranga, they have remained put. “Once settled I explored various avenues to use my skills and first worked as a tutor at the College of Camille in Newmarket before running an Upskills course for teenage girls who had left school young and were seeking some training to extend their career options. My classes trained them to be nail technicians; the girls loved it.” A switch in direction then saw Ann make use of her ESOL training to teach English as a second language but she also set up a small, homebased beauty therapy clinic at home to “keep my hand in!”

Then a chance visit to a wig and beauty salon changed her life. Ann saw an avenue where she could help women suffering hair loss. “I’d previously had a minor issue which resulted in a breast examination. Fortunately, everything was clear but suddenly the idea of really helping women with hair loss regain their dignity meant a lot to me.

have done a long time before. “I was aware just how debilitating hair loss could be for women especially for those undergoing severe treatments for an illness which was also placing them under huge stress.

“I realised here was a way to put my beauty training to good use and, although I wasn’t a hairdresser, back in the UK I had worked closely with stylists.”

“Although I realised that wearing a wig or a soft turban was an excellent solution, I also realised many wigs were poor quality, illfitting and uncomfortable. I made it my mission to source only the best quality, synthetic wigs which are easy care and look just like human hair.

Setting up Magnolia Wigs, to complement the beauty studio, Ann says she felt completely comfortable with the clients and says it was something she should

should be well shaped and soft.” Ann also provides fabric ‘softees’, similar to turbans, which can be a fashion accessory or just a comfy alternative to wearing a wig. “Some softees, even come with a fringe which makes it look as if the wearer has hair underneath,” she says. “I stock magnetic eyelashes too, for those who lose lashes.” While chatting with this sympathetic professional, client Michelle arrives at the studio and is happy to chat about her condition. “I suffer from alopecia which leaves me with bald patches,” she explains. “The little hair I have is very fine and thin. www.eastlife.co.nz

“Fortunately, Ann has been able to help by recommending a wig as wearing a ‘topper’, which clips into existing hair, wouldn’t be suitable for me as my hair is too fine.” Ann adds: “Undoubtedly, dealing with major hair loss can be extremely distressing, and when clients first come to me, they are naturally nervous – I always have tissues on hand. However, it is wonderful when I fit a wig which suits. Usually there’s great excitement but mostly there is relief and pleasure that they can go out in public confidently.”

HYDRATING FACIAL CARE, THREE-STEP REGIME Prickly Pear Cactus might be the major miracle plant used in Weleda’s new Hydrating Facial Care range but products are anything but barbed! SLOWING AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

WHAT ARE THE MOST ADVANCED NATURAL CANCER CLINICS IN THE WORLD DOING? Well, it is strange that you should ask the above because we just had a client return from a prestigious German cancer clinic after undergoing an intensive four-week, $40,000, natural therapies course to beat her cancer. I couldn’t wait to see her after she returned. It has been more than a year since I met with Dr Weber from that clinic so, I was hungry for what they were doing….NOW. I was disappointed in the answer. “They are doing pretty much what you’re doing here: hyperbaric oxygen, hyperthermia, pulsed electromagnetic therapy, low level laser therapy, ozone therapy, hydrogen therapy, repurpose drugs, specific nutrients, cancer specific therapy, diet therapy, lifestyle therapy, etc.” I was hoping for some new developments. I was with Dr Weber a year ago, stealing his material with his blessing. Like so many great cancer practitioners he gave willingly of his knowledge. One in two people will develop cancer. So, what does that look like. Well, you are busy making your way in the world, and then you get a niggle. You finally go and get the niggle checked out and OMG, you have the big C.

“Why Me?”, “How can this be?”, “This is not who I am”, “What about……..”. Yet it is. Everyone who gets cancer is a hub in a wheel. If the hub falls apart, so does the wheel. So, where to from there. You have to decide. This is the most important decision you will make. Conventional, natural, both? Something has caused your cancer.

To date, these are the only studies for which there is good, long-term evidence for the effects of high dose nutrients for people who are diagnosed with MD.

nor does it stop or reverse damage caused by MD. It is important to read the label to understand how many tablets need to be taken to match the AREDS formula.

Chemo/radiation/surgery will deal with the end result, but what about the causes. That’s where natural medicine comes into its own. It deals with causal factors which can continue fuelling cancer and driving reoccurrences.

The Age Related Eye Disease Study showed that taking the AREDS formula every day significantly reduced the relative risk of progression of MD and delayed visual loss. The results in a nutshell: • Those with intermediate stage MD reduced their risk by approximately 25%. • Those with late stage MD in one eye reduced their risk by approximately 20%. • Beta-carotene and omega 3 supplements showed no effect in reducing MD risk • Lutein and Zeaxanthin intake has a clear link with reduced MD risk

One of the key differences between the AREDS and AREDS2 formula is the omission of beta-carotene from the latter study due to concerns about it increasing the risk of cancer in smokers.

Medical studies are so clear. Natural therapies can enhance conventional treatment results and reduce side effects significantly. Whichever path you choose make sure you do your own research. Make an informed decision. Even better, what about prevention? Check whether you have key imbalances known to cause cancer and fix them before you fall off a cliff. The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and the subsequent (AREDS2) were two major clinical trials conducted by the National Eye Institute in the USA. KRISTINE JENSEN, Eyes of Howick owner-optometrist talks about how the study has identified a specific formula of antioxidants shown to be effective in slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (MD).

People who smoke, or have smoked, or who have asbestosis, should not take a supplement that contains beta-carotene. Furthermore, if beta-carotene and lutein is taken concurrently, the absorption of lutein is lowered. While the AREDS2 study found no link between supplementary Omega 3 fatty acids and reduced risk of MD, it is still advised to eat fish 2-3 times per week. It should be noted that there are other benefits of taking an Omega 3 supplement if your fish intake is low such as to help with dry eye and reduce risk of glaucoma. For those patients who have a risk factor for MD, such as family history, over 50 years of age, early macula changes or if their diet is poor in dark green leafy vegetables, a daily lutein supplement of 6-10mg is appropriate. Charming cottage A WORK OF ART AND ENDEAVOUR It takes a clever person to meld old world charm with contemporary style and Lynne Petty is undoubtedly gifted when it comes to seeing the potential to turn a tired cottage into a breathtaking showpiece. She recently revealed the result to HELEN PERRY. Turn to page 40 for more.

Lynne and Rex Petty.

JUST A STEP FROM THE SHORE Many a passerby on The Parade at Bucklands Beach has admired the picture-perfect cottage at No 18. This pristine and regenerated property stands out among surrounding double storey, largely brick, concrete and glass buildings and is home to Rex Mangin and Lynne Petty. provide a retreat for nurses,” she explains.

of the day she and Rex owned the property.

Naturally, my expectation was that the ‘makeover’ would impress but I didn’t expect the stunning metamorphosis Lynne showed me.

“My mother, who often stayed with my brother, just a few houses away, always vowed she would buy the property if it ever came on the market but that remained just a dream. My mum passed away before the property came up for sale.”

They agreed the house at that stage may have been “a dunga” but the position was perfect – straight across the road from the sea. Later, that proved to be a problem.

“It all began a number of years back when the cottage was a nurses retreat owned by Auckland Hospital and operated by the Auckland Nurses and Midwives Rest and Recreation Society to

Although Lynne’s mum would never own the cottage, Lynne was determined to make it hers. Attending the auction she wore her mother’s locket for luck and, as luck would have it, by the end

Six years in the making, the original cottage – looking out to sea – has been transformed inside, extended at the back and further enhanced by the addition of decks and the development of a beautiful garden.

“King tides which occur quite frequently, were back-flowing through the stormwater drains and flooding the whole of The Parade, quite badly on occasions,” the couple concurs. Rex negotiated with council and

high-tech valves were installed – no more flooding. However, a major storm event can still cause problems. “The ocean just comes right on in over the top of the beach,” Lynne says. “This happened not long after we moved in; not a problem. When the original cottage was built this eventuality had been allowed for. “The cottage is above flood level, however the garage isn’t and a big storm flooded it. Our antique furniture and a lot of household effects, including two cars, were all lost.” Despite the issues, Rex and Lynne were undeterred in their plan to restore the cottage and, with help from their builder son-in-law, they started work about 12 months after www.eastlife.co.nz

“My mother, who often stayed with my brother, just a few houses away, always vowed she would buy the property if it ever came on the market but that remained just a dream. My mum passed away before the property came up for sale.”

moving in. “Our previous home was dubbed the ‘Chilton Hilton’; from that you’ll guess downsizing was always going to be a struggle so the plan called for the cottage to be extended – sensitively – as well as renovated,” Lynne says. “I do recall saying to Rex, we may have moved from the Ritz to the Pits but we could create something really special and, fortunately, Council was very sympathetic, realising we not only wanted to retain the property’s charm but also to enhance it.” And, indeed, the couple have created a home which constantly attracts admiring comments but the end result entailed a great deal of hard work complemented by Lynne’s interior design and needlework skills. A former seamstress, she worked for the late Vinka Lucas, who for many years owned Maree de Maru www.eastlife.co.nz

bridal salon in the city. There, this multi-talented lady learnt to sew a fine seam and to execute the finest stitches and beadwork on delicate and beautiful fabrics. Now, her handiwork can be seen in the many exquisitely detailed items which decorate her walls – photo frames showcasing an array of jewellery deftly pinned to a backdrop of colour-co-ordinated silks and satins – just one of the very novel ways she has chosen to highlight a lifetime of memorabilia. Among her ‘artworks’ there is a stunning brooch given to her grandmother by her grandfather on the couple’s engagement at the outbreak of the First World War. “My grandfather was heading overseas so he had the word ‘mizpah’ – meaning, ‘God be with you till we meet again’ – inscribed on the brooch. It still makes me feel emotional and is very precious.”

Throughout the house, Lynne’s gift for placement, and eye for detail have produced a dramatic colour scheme of orange, ivory, and black with eclectic accessories. However, before the décor, structural renovation was the priority. Walls were removed to create open plan living, doors were repositioned, a new kitchen and ensuite installed, decks built and, of course, the extension, with extra rooms, added. Every room of the original cottage was gutted. The former front entranceway has also disappeared, replaced by a light filled, walk-through to the master bedroom behind which the original toilet (which stepped down to a laundry, then stepped up to a shower) has gone, too. Rex and Lynne recreated this area into a beautiful bathroom and large dressing room/walk-in wardrobe. At the rear of the cottage a

redesign of layout has created an office plus a unique area to display more memorabilia and family treasures. Then it is just a step into the extension featuring a guest bedroom, main bathroom, exceptional storage and a laundry utility room for their two Bichon Frise dogs, Ruby Rose and Abby Rose. Outside, two partially covered decks, which attract the sun and take advantage of the views, provide for outdoor relaxation and entertaining while the rear garden is a picture from every angle. “It has been a lot of hard work but the end result has been worth every day spent getting it right,” Lynne says. “I just wish my mother could know we had secured the place she so admired and could see the transformation. I’m sure she would be thrilled.” eastlife | june 2021 |

GREAT DAME DIGS – AND PHIL’S IN! , when Politics may bore many people but set wheels politicians lent a helping hand to l Link, in motion for Auckland’s City Rai boring. (ironically) ‘boring’ was far from

“The official start of tunnelling represents an important milestone on Auckland’s journey towards providing a world-class, 21st century transport network,” Auckland Mayor, Phil Goff, said of the official launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named Dame Whina Cooper – who was far from boring! The tunnels will play a vital role in the overall City Rail Link, ‘on track’ until (and in another way, after)

completion in late 2024. The link is expected to ease pressure on the beleaguered road network, which should be great news for local commuters who work in the city. Although the first 50 metres of tunnel at the Mt Eden site had already been mined, the TBM is now at work excavating the remainder of the 1.6km tunnel which will run under the motorway and connect with the CRL (City Rail Link) tunnels already constructed

from the Britomart Station. “When complete, the City Rail Link will transform rail travel in Tamaki Makaurau,” Mr Goff believes. “It will carry up to 54,000 people an hour, moving the equivalent capacity of three Auckland Harbour Bridges or 16 extra traffic lanes into and through the city at peak times.” Joined by another boring enthusiast, Transport Minister Michael Wood,

Mr Goff pressed a button to start the machine in May. Such ‘shovelready’ projects also provide further benefits, Mr Wood adds. “Building infrastructure like the City Rail Link is part of our Covid-19 economic plan – this project is providing real jobs and opportunities for thousands of Aucklanders. It’ll give us a stepchange in our public transport and cultivate a diverse and highlyskilled workforce.”

STRATEGY IMPERATIVE

FOR INVESTMENT PROGRESS MATT BUCKERIDGE from enable.me talks about the benefit of financial strategies for businesses.

WHEN

home is not a house! Home for most people is usually an apartment or a house but for some people ‘home’ is a mobile unit – a caravan or a campervan. Although life on the road may sound idyllic, before embarking on such a lifestyle it’s important to do your research and to plan appropriately.

First, find the right vehicle for you and get to know it – don’t rush into buying and make the wrong choice. Selling one van to buy another which better suits your needs can prove costly – one option is to rent before you buy. Storage will be limited so you may have to discard some possessions or store them elsewhere. Think carefully about what you need to be comfortable and what you can dispense with. If your sharing, personal space will become precious; living in close proximity to another, even a loved one, may become trying at times. Plan a way to provide for some privacy and time out when needed. Also, consider heating, the type of toilet system, (including dispensing with waste), water storage, and power supply. Pets are generally inadvisable– even a small dog needs room to exercise and may not be welcome at all camp sites. In an enclosed space pets can be messy and smelly.

44 | eastlife | june 2021

Life on the road can lead to wonderful connections with other people but stay in camp sites which are safe and secure with some amenities. Freedom camping may be cheap but not always safe. The cost of living can be less than running a regular property but budget wisely and don’t let the housework slip; it’s easy to get into a muddle. Frequent relocation can also become stressful. Have the correct insurance and keep registration and warrants up to date. Have brakes regularly checked, drive a safe distance from other vehicles and limit your speed – pull over to let queues pass by. Know the height and width of your vehicle so you can pass safely under low clearance bridges and through entrance ways. There is much to learn about campervan living so do your research and talk to others; if you’re well prepared, such a lifestyle could be the ideal solution to housing woes!

At this time we are hearing one question over and over again: “what’s the best investment I can make right now?” It makes perfect sense, amid super-low interest rates, to chase better returns. But, that search often overlooks the place where you can make the biggest gains: your business’s financial strategy. Often small business owners, in particular, are immersed in, or overwhelmed by, the day-to-day running of the business. Ideas for working on a strategy to grow it and make it more profitable can be overwhelming. But a defined, measurable, overarching strategy will help you purposefully grow wealth and avoid the downfalls associated with doing things on the fly. Improving and growing a small business is a unique challenge, because the owners’ personal situation and financial trajectory is often inextricably tied to the business. The statistics show many small businesses are cashflow negative and many owners rely on their personal finances to manage business cashflow. That can work both ways – your personal situation can put pressure on the

business, just as the business can limit your personal progress. This is why making sustainable progress requires a strategy which optimises both. That’s where enable.me – financial strategy and coaching – can become your biggest asset. Our business coaches help to develop a strategy you’re invested in and which seeks to optimise and grow your business. They’ll help you measure what matters, identify quick tactical wins, plan for the future, and will hold your hand and hold you accountable. BANK OF

MUM AND DAD Are you considering helping your child buy a first home?

Partner, PENNY JONES from Wynyard Wood talks about the pros and cons of lending adult children money to buy a home. With Auckland house prices at an all-time high and far outstripping wage increases, it has never been more difficult to buy a first home. New LVR restrictions from March 1, 2021 require an owner-occupier to have a 20% deposit. With the Auckland median house price at $1,100,000, this means a deposit over $200,000. It is no wonder that many parents are keen to help if they can. So what is the best way to help? Gift — You can gift funds to your child. Banks prefer this as your child is not required to pay it back to you. Your child will prefer it as they are able to proceed independently. However, you will not be able to call back this gift if you need funds later in life. Loan — You can lend funds to your child. This has the advantage that you can call it up if you need it or if your child is experiencing difficulties in a relationship or business. This benefits both you and your child. However, banks do not like dealing

with another loan although they sometimes accept a loan with no interest payable, no security and only repayable on the sale of the property. Guarantee — You can use the equity in your home to guarantee a part of your child’s bank loan. This is good in that you are not parting with your savings. However, the bank’s lending criteria are getting stricter (difficult for retired parents) and you also risk being liable to the bank if your child defaults on the bank loan. Share ownership — You can buy a property together with your child. You will benefit from any capital gain made. You are, however, involved in their bank borrowing and would need a very clear agreement drawn up to cover how the arrangement will work including the ability to exit. So, there are many options to consider. What is essential is that you obtain good legal advice to work out the best option for you.

WE KNOW Other matters may also have been on the PM’s mind in May, however (as ever) the budget took centre stage, as this commentary from the EastLife team, based on official reports from Ms Ardern’s office, reveals. Jacinda Ardern.

BUDGET 2021 – LABOURING ON... The latest money-go-round sees funds flying furiously as the Government dishes out the dosh needed to keep doing this. “This Budget targets investments that will set Aotearoa New Zealand up to both recover from Covid-19 and be stronger than when we entered the pandemic,” Ms Ardern said on May 20, with reference to the budget as a whole. “Our economic plan is working. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the OECD, growth has exceeded expectations and debt is lower than forecast. Coupled with our successful management of the virus, we are well placed to seize the opportunities the recovery now presents.” Budget 2021 is intended to strike a balance between economic recovery and ‘keeping a lid on debt’, but the wellbeing of the most vulnerable is a major component. “Previous economic downturns have made inequality worse. We’re taking a different approach. By investing in those who need it the most, we are driving the recovery by reducing need, at the same time as providing stimulus for our economy,” the PM added.

46 | eastlife | june 2021

“As well as investing in the homes, family and whanau who need it most, we will continue to invest in critical services like health, education and social housing, in order to support the recovery.” The budget can be viewed in its entirety via www.treasury.govt.nz.

INNOVATION – THE CHILD OF NECESSITY Child wellbeing requires ongoing action, the PM confirmed following the release of two reports in mid May.

“While I’m proud of the Government’s achievements to date in reducing child poverty, the work is far from done,” the PM added. “The results will take time, but we will continue to build on progress, putting children and young people first, so that New Zealand really can be the best place in the world for them to be.”

COOKS – BOOK IT! Following the resumption of limited links with the Cook Islands earlier this year, two-way, quarantine-free travel has now been resumed.

“The reports highlight that most children and young people in New Zealand are doing well. However, there is still a group of children for whom life at home is quite different,” Ms Ardern said. “Reducing the number of children living in poverty is a key priority for the Government and it’s pleasing to see the range actions are starting to have a positive effect on children’s lives.”

“Two way quarantine-free travel is a significant step in both countries’ Covid-19 recovery, and a direct result of both New Zealand and the Cook Islands’ successful response to the pandemic,” the PM said when confirming the move in early May. “It [means] families can reconnect, commercial arrangements can resume and Kiwis can take a much-welcomed winter break and support the Cook Islands’ tourism sector and recovery.”

The first annual report for the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy and the second Child Poverty Related Indicators (CPRI) Report reveal there is room for improvement.

As with the trans-Tasman bubble, conditions do apply, however. In particular, travel will not be permitted for anyone who has not been in either the Cook Islands or

New Zealand for at least 14 days before departure.

MALLARD IN HER SIGHTS The Speaker is usually the one to chastise unruly MPs, but in early May, it was a case of open season on one particular Mallard, who drew fire and earned the ire of the PM. “I have spoken with The Speaker. He retains my overall confidence; however I have expressed serious concerns to him about the manner in which he conducted himself in the House,” Ms Ardern said. “It did not meet the standards I expect. Nor do I consider it to have met the needs of the victim in this situation. The Speaker acknowledges he did not meet his own standards either.” Mr Mallard’s conduct related to allegations made of sexual assault, despite no charges being laid to date by police. “The serious issue of alleged sexual assault and harassment at Parliament was poorly managed and inappropriately politicised. The tone of the debate did not reflect well on Parliament as a whole.” www.eastlife.co.nz
