INTO THE POT WITH SEASONAL FRUIT AND VEGE
This time of year may be bleak but it’s ideal for feeding the soul and nurturing health with fresh, nutritious fruit and vegetables.
5+ A Day project manager Carmel Ireland says lower sunshine hours and shorter days can lead to a loss in energy and put a strain on mental health but wise mealtime choices can reverse the ‘winter blues’ and boost immunity.
In particular, winter fruits are a powerhouse of vitamins so, in season kiwifruit, tamarillos and lemons are to be relished, Navel oranges, too.
“All these locally-grown fruit provide a high level of vitamin C which supports immunity and is critical to managing chronic diseases, heart health and blood pressure,’ Ms Ireland says.
Winter is also the perfect time to embrace slow cooking methods and to try new recipes using in season vegetables.
“Soups, stews and roasted vegetables really come into their own at this time of year with parsnips, carrots and potatoes being seasonal favourites which form the base of many budget-friendly, family meals,” Ms Ireland says.
Keep up green vegetable intake with kale, broccoli and fresh herbs, all a source of benefi cial vitamins and minerals as well as excellent dietary fi bre. Also check out vegetable superstar, caulifl ower. It can be roasted and spiced or mixed with other vegetables to bulk up a meal.
Options abound but this simple yet delicious parsnip soup makes for an easy weekend lunch.

MOPPING UP cleaning disasters
Nasty spills and problem stains are not unusual but dealing with them can be problematic. Home insurance experts at money.co.uk have now revealed the most common cleaning disasters and offer solutions for some of them.
Clogged drains are obviously a problem worldwide as they topped the list of common cleaning disasters with 17,300 average monthly global searches seeking a solution.
The home insurance team at money.co.uk suggested pouring hot water down the clogged drain and following it up with baking soda and vinegar, letting it sit for 30 minutes and then adding more hot water to clear the clog.
Second spot went to removing pet hair, with average monthly searches of 15,200. Using rubber gloves to remove the hair was a recommended approach because when rubber is brushed against clothes, it generates static and will attract those unwanted hairs which are hard to get rid of.
Not far behind in third place, with 14,400 average monthly searches, was lime scale removal.
A simple solution to this chore is a combination of soda and vinegar and letting it sit for 10 minutes. In fourth place was removing dirt from grout — 12,400 average monthly searches.
Tackling grimy grout can be tiresome but scrubbing with an old toothbrush and some whitening toothpaste may help or try 30 Seconds Indoor Mould Remover.
Placing fi fth was cleaning a dirty toilet with 10,800 average monthly searches. Cleaning experts recommended using essential oils and/or baking soda and vinegar as a DIY toilet cleaner. Stains on the carpet came in at sixth with 6200 monthly global searches while chipped paint was seventh. The last three places rounded off with water stains in eighth place, dirty windows in ninth and fi nally, cracked or chipped tiles in tenth.
A simple way to tackle the tile issue is to simply squeeze out a small amount of regular toothpaste and apply it evenly to the cracks. Find a toothpaste which matches the colour of your tile for the best fi nish.
Note: money.co.uk scoured multiple online articles to create a list of the most common cleaning disasters and used SEMRush to input each common cleaning disaster. This was then used to fi nd the average number of searches made each month. The data was collated on 20/05/2021 and is subject to change.
