Isaac’s tale of survival a decade on By FARIDA MASTER
A
Elim Christian College student Isaac Cairns shaved his head to reflect on his own story and create awareness for his favourite charities. Times photo Wayne Martin
s 18-year-old Isaac Cairns shaved off his hair, it brought back harsh memories of his battle with cancer. He survived ependymona cancer, a rare tumour that occurs in the brain and spinal cord. It was 10 years ago on May 25 that Isaac’s parents Kirsten and Greg got the heart-breaking news of their eight-year-old being diagnosed with a brain tumour. The Elim Christian College student shares his lifechanging journey of pain and suffering along with tremendous support they got to create awareness for his favourite charities, Starship Hospital, Make a Wish Foundation, CanTeen and Child Cancer Foundation. Isaac says the news of a brain tumour came as a great shock to his parents who
had brushed off their son’s constant headaches and throwing up, thinking it was nothing major at first. “We were living on a houseboat in Hong Kong at the time since my dad Greg was a pilot. “I remember it was just
“I was fully paralysed after the surgery and hooked onto more tubes than I could count.” four days after my sister Emily’s birthday that they removed the tumour. “The surgery was done in two batches over 23 hours. It was a miracle that for the second surgery an American doctor, a leading neurologist,
heard about my case and offered to operate on me as a case example.” Once the tumour was operated on, it was a long, hard road to recovery. “I was fully paralysed after the surgery and hooked onto more tubes than I could count. I had to go through seven weeks of radiology after that, which was tough for an eight-year-old. “My dad had to carry me around. My nana and dad’s cousin Mike Taylor flew to Hong Kong and stayed with us for a year to help mum and dad to look after me. “Mike did hours of rehab swimming with me. Other family members also took turns and did stints to help us out.” Friends and family formed a `Go Isaac’ team with matching t-shirts to help Isaac get back on his feet. ➤➤ Turn to page 6

t’s been a long time coming but everything Kiwis have done over the past couple of months means New Zealand is finally able to return to something closely resembling normality while the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact many other countries. The Government yesterday declared we were finally dropping to Alert Level 1 effective at midnight last night. Alert Level 1 sees everyone being able to return without restriction to work, school, sports and domestic travel and you can get together with as many people as you want. Controls at the borders remain for those entering New Zealand, including health screening and testing for all arrivals and mandatory 14-day managed quarantine or isolation. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was also important that Kiwis keep the basic hygiene measures going that worked so well through higher alert levels. “These include washing your hands and coughing or sneezing into your elbow. Remember to remain vigilant and being aware of physical distancing when out and about amongst strangers is a good habit to keep,” she said. “We should all continue to keep track of where we’ve been and who

The world will remain in the grip of a global pandemic for some time to come and we will see cases here again, which we must remain prepared for.”

Let’s support our businesses H
ow lovely it was to pop out on Saturday and visit Howick. The sun was shining, the markets open for the first time since lockdown and the locals were out in force to support local businesses. The traffic was backed up down the main street and parking was back to being a problem. Actually, it did feel
like it was back to normal. Obviously there was social distancing but the buzz was amazing. After we left Howick we drove to Botany Town Centre and, again, people were out enjoying their new freedom and shopping. Not online but in person. Who would have thought all
those weeks ago that life could so quickly return to some sort of normal. I know local businesses - some more than others - have felt the effects of the lockdown with no income for many weeks. I just want to reiterate that we need to shop local and please support our advertisers who bring you this paper each week.
I also want to thank all the readers who have made contact with us since we have been back printing saying how much they love getting the Times and reading the local news. That’s what we do. Enjoy today’s paper. Reay Neben Managing director, Times Media

Ryman care lightens Anne’s lockdown For Anne, hearing the news that the country was moving into lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19 was an angst-ridden time. The former King’s College school nurse had only recently swapped her independent apartment for a serviced apartment at Bruce McLaren Retirement Village which meant she could enjoy a cooked meal in the dining room with fellow residents plus the perks of regular linen and towel changes. While the services remained, meals were now brought to her room and all the usual activities she was involved in had to be put on hold. “It was scary,” she admits. “I worried about my great grandchildren particularly and what sort of world they were being born into.” While the speed that things were changing was overwhelming at times, Anne says she was glad that Ryman Healthcare was taking steps to keep everyone safe. Ryman, which operates 34 villages in New Zealand, started screening visitors who had travelled overseas from late January. Security was put on the gate and from March 16, all visits to the village were stopped apart from those deemed essential. “I had seen some of the stories and I think Ryman were right to be on it. They were fantastic really. I wouldn’t have needed anything.”
Anne’s daughter in law did some shopping for her which could be dropped at the gate and then delivered to her door by staff. Any further meals she needed were also provided along with a few extra goodies. All residents received a one-off giftbox of pantry staples, a weekly delivery of bread, milk and biscuits, a weekly Happy Hour in a bag and the chance to do twice weekly Bidfood grocery orders for those who didn’t have family on hand to help with shopping. That totalled an impressive 9,000 Bidfood orders and 56,000 Happy Hour bags supplied to 8,000 residents over seven weeks! “I actually had to stop telling my friends who live in other places because they were starting to get a bit envious!” laughs Anne, who has lived at the village for five years. Being one of eight siblings and having raised five children, the lockdown experience really underlined for Anne what a social creature she is. “I do love living by myself but I love having access to other people and not being able to go out did affect me. “I used WhatsApp to talk to my family a few times which was good. And the staff were simply amazing. Life would have been so much worse without their endless patience and cheerful kindness.” Anne, 87, is also used to being very sporty and active
Anne glad to be in the Bruce McLaren bubble
– she loves playing tennis and croquet, swimming, joining Ryman’s in-house Triple A exercise programme, and she has just taken up indoor bowls. “I did a lot of walking instead!” she laughs. “I walked around the garden and then back the other way, I think I worked out about three or four different paths and everyone was very good at getting out of people’s way. “The nice thing was there were people I wouldn’t have
met that I wouldn’t have spoken to otherwise. People stopped and talked. And because the weather was so great I would often do several walks a day. “If I got a bit bored, and I didn’t feel like reading or doing any more puzzles I would just go for another walk!” she says. With some of the restrictions now lifted, Anne is tentatively exploring the new normal, including a refreshing dip in the village
pool. Her first trip back to the supermarket was quite a strange experience though. “I just walked right in and then I realised there was a queue! I came back and apologised but they let me go in anyway,” she laughs. Sales advisor Rose says now is a good time to come in and view the available serviced apartments.

EMERGENCY BUDGET
Pakuranga loses no matter what: Brown A
uckland Council has released its Emergency Budget (May 29) in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, and amongst its cost-saving proposals comes an impossible choice for residents in Pakuranga, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. The council is proposing two main options for handling the economic recovery in Auckland: a rate increase of 3.5 per cent with a smaller number of spending cuts, or an increase of 2.5 per cent with a larger range of austerity measures. “For Pakuranga, the choice boils down to a higher rate increase and a funding cut to the Eastern Busway, or the lower increase and a larger funding cut to the Eastern Busway,” says Brown. “In this Emergency Budget, there already appears to be a $22 million discrepancy in funding for the next stages of the Busway, consisting of cuts to the Reeves Road Flyover and Pakuranga Bus Station.” “The pre-Covid amount the council was going to spend on the Eastern Busway this year is already $22 million less than what was allocated in the coun-

cil’s ‘Budget Book’. The first question is when did this funding cut occur and why was no-one seemingly told about it?” “Under its proposal for the lower 2.5 per cent increase, the council says it would need to cut even more funding to the Eastern Busway, another $20m, creating further delays on top of what we’ve already been dealing with.” “While the details are vague about where that money will be pulled from, one thing is clear: Pakuranga loses no matter what.” Brown says the choice can be avoided if the council and government finalise Auckland’s portion of the $3 billion ‘shovelready’ infrastructure fund, which was promised in Budget

2020. “Decisions are yet to be made on this funding, but the Eastern Busway seems an obvious choice given the Mayor himself has put it to the Government for additional funding and said it will ‘create a boost to jobs and incomes and assist Auckland’s economic recovery,’” he says. “I am calling on the council and the government to come together, sort this out, and urgently clarify whether further funding will be granted for the Eastern Busway to ensure the project is completed on time and in full.” However Mayor Phil Goff says Brown is incorrect. “The statement by Simeon Brown MP is wrong. There are no cuts proposed. This project was brought

forward and funded under the 2018 Auckland Transport Alignment Programme after too many delays prior to that,” Goff told the Times. “Auckland Council is currently consulting the public on the proposed Emergency Budget and no decisions will be made until the consultation process is carried out. The Emergency Budget responds to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on Auckland Council’s finances, which has cut its operating cash income by more than half a billion dollars.” Goff says cuts to the $1.4b Eastern Busway are not being proposed. “It is regarded as critical to improve public transport to the east of the city and we announced just last month confirmation that we were proceeding with the Registration of Interest for an integrated design, engineering and construction consortium for the remaining stages of the project between Pakuranga and Botany. “The reduction from the $37 million to the $15 million in the budget document is a timing change on the programme which has pushed some land purchases further out.” The Budget is open for feedback until Friday June 19.

Farm Cove assault worries locals By JIM BIRCHALL A man was assaulted and believed to have been knocked off his bike in an incident involving a group of youths on the Rotary walkway in Farm Cove on Tuesday May 26. A police spokesperson said police were called to reports of an assault on Fisher Parade, Pakuranga about 4pm on May 26. “Police spoke to a number of people at the time and enquiries are ongoing.” The Times understands one youth has been referred to youth aid which was confirmed by police. The assault comes on the back of a recent spate of incidents in the Farm Cove, Sunnyhills and Bucklands Beach areas. The same group of youths believed to be involved in the walkway assault are alleged to have also stolen a bike from a teenager at the Farm Cove shops on or around May 19. On May 23, two Macleans College students were robbed of a BMX bike and a shoulder bag on Clovelly Road resulting in moderate injuries to the victims. ➤➤Police advise their enquiries are continuing.

Focus Hearing offers free trial of hearing aids for first six weeks
ADVERTORIAL JH16047A
As empty streets have fast started filling up after Covid-19 lockdown and businesses gradually start operating, audiologist Daniel Kim of Focus Hearing in Howick says this is a good time to look at your hearing needs before you revert to your busy social life. The lockdown has made us reassess our wellbeing. “Though it is business as usual at Focus Hearing, there is a lot of sanitisation and protocols in place,” says the hearing care professional. Stressing on the importance of hearing for healthy aging, he says that hearing loss is one of most common conditions affecting older people, which in turn has a psychological impact, often leading to depression and cognitive decline. “The worse our hearing gets, the more difficult it becomes to communicate with friends and family, causing us to become socially isolated, says the independent clinician, a fully qualified NZAS Audiologists, specialising in children and adult diagnostics and hearing aids. “It often takes time for hearing loss to become apparent and it is often perceived as an unfortunate but insignificant part of the aging process. “Now researchers believe hearing loss affects our cognition and increases risk of dementia. Research shows there is a relationship between level of unmanaged hearing loss and level of dementia risk” he says. Having worked earlier in public hospitals

FUNDRAISING
Jammies in June E
very year Middlemore Foundation gives pyjamas to thousands of kids in need across South Auckland. Middlemore Foundation’s work in the community has never been needed more than now and this year we are going ahead with Jammies in June to keep our most vulnerable tamariki warm through winter. For this year’s Jammies in June organisers are not setting a target but simply asking the New Zealand public to give what they can and together let’s do our best to give warm winter jammies to as many children in need as possible.
office (behind Poppies); ANZ Bank in Uxbridge Road.
THE NEED
Approximately 125,000 children live in Counties Manukau; 48 per cent of these children live in areas of high socio-
economic deprivation. Jammies in June is now in its eighth year giving pyjamas, blankets, beanies, socks and slippers to children in need. In 2019, almost 27,000 pyjamas and $18,911.83 was donated by the loyal supporters and businesses in our Jammies Army.
DOES YOUR MAN NEED A NEW LOOK? OR MAYBE YOU DO?
HOW YOU CAN HELP?
Thousands of kids don’t have warm pyjamas to wear in winter. Together, we can change that. How you can support Jammies in June 2020: • Purchase online from a retailer or small business and get the items shipped to us • Make a donation in lieu of a pair of pyjamas • Join in the Cold for the Cause fundraiser at home • Sign up to be a drop-off point

While many dental practitioners were lamenting the dearth of patients attending emergency surgery during lockdown Alert Level 3 and 4, Dr Elena Artyukh was quietly celebrating. The Howick dentist, who has been in the industry quarter of a century, believes it is the diligence shown by her patients over the years that meant none of them required emergency treatment during our strictest lockdown periods. For Dr Artyukh, who has had operated a dental surgery in the heart of Howick for 15 years, it is the gold standard. While all dental services at her practice Dentart are back to normal under current Alert Level 2 (with Alert Level 1 due to kick in this week), Dr Artyukh says the fact none of her patients required treatment in early lockdown is testimony to their treatment regimens. “Our patients didn’t have any emergencies. It’s the gold standard. They have been making good choices

Real estate market confidence shifts due to Covid-19: REINZ T
he REINZ Residential Confidence Report for April has shown that activity in the real estate industry was extremely subdued due to Covid-19. In April $1.051 billion of residential property was sold across the country, whereas during a typical April month REINZ would expect to see around $4.358 billion, showing the effect that Alert Level 4 lockdown had on the residential property market in New Zealand. Unlike other recessions in living memory, such as the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, Covid-19 effectively hit New Zealand in a relatively short space of time with New Zealand’s first case recorded in late February and then just one month later the entire country was placed in lockdown. Therefore, this makes it extremely difficult to look at other recessions to assess what the impact might be on the NZ econ-

omy but specifically the real estate sector. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “While confidence is important for those working in the real estate profession, confidence in residential property is also closely linked consumer spending patterns, borrowing behaviour and other activities such as individuals’ ability to pay off debt or make

investment decisions. Therefore, we felt it was important to start measuring how some of the metrics that impact confidence have been performing. “Naturally, some of the indicators became quite marked during April, including a dramatic drop in sales volumes and the percentage of auctions held – although this isn’t entirely surprising given the lock-
down. Additionally, median days to sell and listings increased and there was a slight falling in the sales price to valuation ratio. However, prices held and, in fact the country experienced a record median price during April,” she continues. “With some anecdotal evidence that May activity is showing some signs of recovery, that would indicate some positivity. “However, with a few more months before the banks’ mortgage ‘holiday’ period comes to an end, it could be some time before we see the true impact on the market.”
NUMBER OF PROPERTIES SOLD DROPS TO RECORD LOW The number of properties sold during April dropped to all-time record lows with just over 1300 properties sold during April. Unsurprisingly, sales volumes dropped steadily over the four weeks, with
the last two weeks of the month seeing just over 200 properties sold each week. A ‘typical’ April month would see around 1600 properties sold each week – even when the usual Easter break, school holidays and Anzac Day are taken into account. “It was no surprise that April’s sales figures were the lowest on record, but what was surprising was how many properties actually sold during lockdown, especially with some of the tough forecasts economists were predicting. With inspections, auctions and sales negotiations all having to be done virtually, it was impressive that real estate agents were able to complete in excess of 1300 property sales in April,” says Norwell. “Already, agents have reported a busy start to May trading, but time will tell whether this was a shortterm peak of activity, or whether it is more sustained.”

A GANDER AT THE BUDGET Last week (ending May 22), Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown wrote an article on this year’s Budget. He said: “The Budget includes a large number of big spending items but very little detail or accountability for what it was to be spent on… National would support struggling businesses by allowing them to claim a portion of last year’s GST back….” He later indicated that the government should assist small businesses more e.g. with rent. (No details – e.g. what the assistance would consist of – are provided). Despite the criticism of the Budget for not providing enough detail, Mr Brown’s announcement on National’s policy on GST provides absolutely no detail. It does not state • What portion of a company’s GST can be claimed back. • How much the policy will cost and how the tax reduction will be funded. When asked (on TV1’s Q+A) how much National would increase spending by, National’s new leader, Todd Muller, declined to give an answer with satisfactory detail. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Mr Brown needs to apply the same rules to National Party policy as he applies to government policy.

LOCALS ARE ANGRY!
Congratulations on a well written article on 12 Cozy Place. There is another beautiful street being trashed by the Council breaking its own Unitary Plan guidelines. A single dwelling home at 8 Riverlea Avenue, a quiet tree lined street has been sold with the Council giving the developers approval to build 3 x 4 bedroom apartments, 12 bedrooms in all, with the likelihood of housing 24 people-where there used to be just six inhabitants. There is garaging for just four cars. This means parking for the other occupants will be on this narrow street. There is no storm water system in Riverlea Ave . Very disturbing this is that we hear, that although the developers originally stated that the existing house would be demolished, they have now applied for permission to remove it, as is. This means that the mature native and other trees in front

with be chopped down and then the large and stunning Pohutukawa branches that form a partial canopy down the street will have to be removed, to accommodate the house removal trucks, all so a developer can make some extra cash! We should be preserving our oxygen producing trees that also provide a haven for native birds. The locals are very angry.

PENSION PROBLEMS
In support of Arthur Moore’s letter about non-contributing overseas citizens picking up the New Zealand pension, I agree that this should cease. I had worked in NZ for over 40 years when I claimed the pension at 65. Despite this, my application could not be processed until I claimed on the UK government for a proportion of my UK pension, for
Congratulations to Todd Muller on being democratically elected as the new leader of the National Party. I hope that if and when he becomes Prime Minister, he will exercise the same democratic procedures that put him there and have all NZ citizens treated equally in the same democratic manner without fear or favour, a thing we have not seen for a long time.

IRRETRIEVABLE DAMAGE DONE Simon Bridges is not being helped by his fellow bleeding hearts brigade. They might well ask themselves which party put house ownership beyond the next generation’s ability to ever afford it. And over-crowded and shortfunded the health systems and housing systems for future generations, allowed Auckland City for one to have pollution levels akin to Tokyo and beaches so polluted for even this generation of youngsters
to swim in; allowed 11 per cent of the next generation’s inheritance in the form of habitable and productive land into the hands of foreign investors and now, with crocodile tears, are decrying the cost of living the coalition have imposed on future generations. The afore-mentioned irretrievable damage to the quality of life done to the next generation by Simon Bridges mates in their nine years in office may never be repaired, the $20 billion deficit on the other hand, after all, is only money and can be retrieved by simply printing more.

Nick kept us all informed re services etc available to us. I will never forget Nick and his wife’s kindness. It is also lovely to receive our Times again and read the local news.

Eastern Marine Dam water Engineering back levels slowly in business

on the rise
Despite recent forecasts, things are looking up for the businesses within the Pine Harbour hardstand. Boat owners have become “boatsick” in the recent lockdown and are flooding back in droves to check on their beloved vessels. With overseas travel off the cards for the foreseeable, many kiwi boat owners are choosing to invest their holiday funds on their pride and joy. Eastern Marine Engineering Services has experienced significant interest from clientele regarding repowering their boats with Mercury outboards or Mercruiser inboards. “We were expecting to see a drop off in engine sales and work due to Covid,” says owner Charlie Stewart. “We couldn’t have been more wrong, and we believe the current Mercury promotions are to thank for this.” Mercury is currently offering savings of up to $1,750 on 40 to 115 horsepower models from the four stroke range until the end of June. They are also offering free upgrade to DTS worth $2,208 on all V6 175 to 225 horsepower. Mechanical versions are also dis-

he region’s dam levels are slowly edging upwards but are still way off normal capacity. According to Watercare’s latest drought status update (as at Monday), the Hunua Ranges have had 76.5mm of rain in the past seven days and 2mm on Sunday. There was 39.5mm in the Waitakere Ranges for the past week and 6.5mm on Sunday. Since the start of the drought in November 2019, the region has have received less than half the normal rainfall, Watercare said. Yesterday the dams were at 45.09 per cent capacity, up from 45.1 per cent on Sunday. Normal dam capacity for this time of year is 77.04 per cent. As for water consumption – Auckland currently has mandatory water restrictions – the targert for June is 410 million litres or less a day. The seven-day rolling average on Sunday was 404m litres while Sunday’s consumption was 397m litres.

THANK YOU ALL PEOPLE
If Winston Churchill were with us today, he may have said, “Never in the event of a viral pandemic was so much owed by so many to so few”. The few: The doctors, nurses, carers, drivers, Red Cross, Salvation Army, food sorters and delivery volunteers, neighbours, police, hospitals and many more who selflessly step out of comfort zones to provide a vital need. Be proud of yourselves. You have our enduring thanks

WE NEED A BUS STOP Re: Howick central southbound bus stop. I would like to submit a frequently-asked question by many, whenever waiting at the Howick Village southbound central bus stop. We had a bus shelter, some considerable time ago, when I believe a bus collided with and damaged the above. Until being removed, this allowed residents of all ages some protection from our main street’s fierce wind, rain and very hot summer sun. The conversations while waiting for buses are numerous, as to why so many other local stops have recently had flashy glass shelters erected while, alas, all local resi-

dents now look like facing another winter of cold icy blasts, along with heavy rain at our most used village stop. This is a bitter pill to swallow for many of us who are trying to stay dry, safe and well during trying times. Surely this is a situation that is well overdue in its need to be rectified.

WRC EVOCATIVE OF CCP Apparently the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) has become Auckland City’s upstream ‘water master’. It is a strategy that has worked well for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to leverage compliance from Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia et al. Having built dams in occupied Tibet, the CCP controls and throttles the Mekong and other rivers, the source of vital water to these downstream South-East Asian countries – particularly during droughts. In this respect the WRC is evocative of the CCP. If Auckland’s water take is just 0.5 per cent of the Waikato flow that runs out to sea, doubling that to 1 per cent can’t be the issue? Surely the hierarchy of consent consideration must be based on urgency of need and enormity of impact, not the submission date? So what is it that the WRC really
LOCKDOWN POETRY
I wrote this poem at the beginning of Level 4 lockdown.
SHOWDOWN!
Lockdown, slowdown, Think I’ll have a lie-down! Not a sound can be found, Is that a gecko on the ground? Sealions coming inland, Local birds think it’s grand to strut on footpaths, Rule our land. Supermarkets self-distance please, Wear a mask in case you sneeze, Streets are bare ‘cos we’re not there! We’ll beat that virus, Just you try us!
Mary King Sunnyhills wants to leverage out of Auckland and is that for the benefit of the nation or just the Waikato? What is at stake?

PLEASE EXPLAIN COUNCIL PAY I consider that anyone employed by Auckland Council or its CCOs, if not a contractor, is an employee irrespective of salary or grand title. A report issued by the Auckland
Ratepayers Alliance, an organisation concerned at the Auckland Council’s persistent rate rises and culture of extravagance, alleges that the council is extraordinarily generous to its top employees. It is claimed that 86 – yes 86 – are being paid $250,000 per annum or more which is greater than a Cabinet Minister outside Cabinet receives. Amounts of $540,000 to $775,000 are quoted. The Alliance quite reasonably asks – what do they all do? Anyone with internet access can google up the name of the Alliance and find out further extreme examples of council generosity with funds unwillingly provided by its ratepayers. For instance, 48 such employees received more than Mayor Goff, and seven more than Jacinda Ardern. It is not clear whether any of the 130 spin doctors the council seems it must have are included in those figures. But it is obvious there is an infestation of cats at council and they are all too fat. I am advised that our two local councillors were asked if there were any inaccuracies in the Alliance’s report and that Sharon Stewart neither confirmed nor denied, but did express surprise at the amounts quoted. She went on to say that the matter was one for the CEO. (Councillor) Paul Young did not bother to reply. A very disappoint-
ing lack of concern from him. If indeed Stephen Town has unrestricted power to make appointments and determine salaries, it is obvious that his wings need to be clipped. In their forthcoming “wideranging” review, while little can be done with those who have employment contracts, any future contracts where the proposed salary is more than, say, $200,000pa, should be pre-approved by a sub-committee of councillors and, if more than $400,000, by the full council.

RED CAP, BIBLE AND TEARGAS Re: ‘Maga-Understood’ (Dr Mike Schmidt, Times, June 2). I agree with Dr Schmidt that conflating character with policy and hyperbole hardly tempers the situation. Clearly President Trump, his personality and politics, is better represented, not by the red MAGA (Make America Great Again) cap of his rallies, but by the bigly black bible he held aloft in front of a church across the road from the White House where he was hiding in a bunker having ordered his creature, Attorney General William Barr, to clear his path of peaceful protesters with teargas.

ANNIVERSARY
60 years of togetherness By FARIDA MASTER
I
t’s like a dream, says Jean Iqbal as congratulatory messages and cards flooded in. They came from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy, Minister of Internal Affairs Tracey Martin, mayors past and present, Morin Cooper and Phil Goff, and Member of Parliament Simeon Brown — have been delivered on Jean and Mohamed Iqbal’s Diamond Anniversary (60th wedding anniversary). Due to Covid-19 and their ill health, the Howick couple couldn’t host a celebration but were happy to talk to the Times about the first time they met over curry. Jean’s friend, also a nurse, invited her home to have curry and introduced her to a friend’s friend who worked with Crown Agents for Overseas Governments and Administrations, London. As Iqbal, a young barrister who studied law in London, got to know Jean, a night duty nurse at the Chelsea Women’s Hospital, England, he realised that she was determined to study further. Jean soon left for America. “It was quite exciting to get engaged on the ship just before I sailed to New York with the intention of staying there for a year to complete my course,” says Jean, now 87. However, four months later, she cut short her stay and returned to London to be with the young lawyer who had slipped a ring on her finger. “I missed him too much,” she says.

When Iqbal first broke the news to his parents in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) that he wanted to marry an English girl, they were worried that he would be the first person in the family to marry for love. It was unheard of says the former Tea Commissioner of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Jean says that her boss and friends tried to warn her against marrying a brown person. They said she would find it difficult to get a house to live in. “As a nurse, I never understood racism. I had always treated patients of all races with equal love and care,” she says. Iqbal married Jean Irene Stanton on the April 26, 1960 in London. Two years later they were blessed with a baby girl who they named Zanhuba (Zan) After five years in England, the
newly married couple moved to Ceylon where Iqbal was offered a job as Secretary to Minister of Housing and Labour. “Everyone treated me like a queen there,” says Jean. Their son Rasak (Zak) was born in Colombo. Three years later the couple moved to New Zealand in 1968,. Jean and Iqbal say they’ve shared an exciting life, thanks to Iqbal’s job as Honorary Tea Commission New Zealand. They often met prime ministers and heads of state including Robert Muldoon, Mike Moore, Norman Kirk, David Lange, Jawarharlal Nehru, Saddam Hussain, Zial-u-haq, Colonel Gaddafi and the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia. Iqbal was also the First Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka. He was connected with the Sri Lankan Tea Board for more than 42 years.
20th season of planting trees at Mangemangeroa June is the month to help celebrate 20 years of planting native trees in the Mangemangeroa Valley Reserves. There are two dates where you can help plant some 6000 eco-sourced native trees, grown from seeds collected in the valley. The Saturday June 13 planting is organised by South Auckland Forest & Bird with Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) and Saturday June 27 by local Rotary clubs with FOM. Meet by 8.40am at 108 Somerville Road, Howick in the Barn car park. Children aged over 12 years with a parent/supervisor are welcome. Items to bring include gloves; sound covered footwear; weather protection, sunscreen,

drinking water and a spade or light shovel. All helpers will be required to sign-in and maintain whatever Covid-19 Level requirements apply on the day. It’s an Auckland Council requirement that all receive a Health & Safety talk before departing to planting sites. The talk will start at 8.45am. Unfortunately, any late comers arriving after this talk are liable to be turned away. There will be a selection of ways to help – some don’t involve digging or planting, eg assembling and/or fitting plant protectors (need to bring along a hammer or mallet for this). ➤➤For more information call Forest & Bird/FOM (Graham Falla, 09 276 3092) Rotary/FOM (Allan Riley 021 534 474).

Dam levels still low Page 15 RUGBY LEAGUE
League back in business By JIM BIRCHALL
A
uckland Rugby League (ARL) has confirmed plans are finalised to return to play following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. Returns have been staggered by grade in order to help clubs comply with the various mandatory health and safety protocols, the ARL said. Fox Memorial Trophy 2019 Champions Howick Hornets are fizzing to get on the park in 2020. Their first assignment is competing for the coveted Stormont Shield against last year’s final opponents, the Mt Albert Lions, on Saturday June 20 at the Hornets’ Nest at Paparoa Park. Club captain Denie Allan says there is “plenty riding on it with the rivalry and bragging rights” and added he was hoping for a big turnout of sideline-starved
supporters. The club is also holding a charity match on Sunday June 21 at Paparoa Park to benefit club legend Damion Miller who had an accident in the water in February and is now paralysed from the neck down. The match sees a Howick Hornets Masters side take on the #UP_4DAMO invitational side. The game kicks off at 2pm. The Hornets band of supporters, The Firm, will be running raffles with prizes donated by local sponsors. ➤➤Support Damo’s recovery at https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/support-damosrecovery

OPINION
Try-ing times: Rugby’s return scratches itch Sports fans groaned a collective sigh of relief as a truncated version of the NRL season kicked off last weekend. The sparse stadia were populated only with the teams, coaches, and (surely pointless) security stewards and other associated yellowvested personnel, necessitating the use of fake crowd noise to add atmosphere to titanic struggles. For $22.50 fans could even have a cardboard cut-out of themselves inserted into a seat in the crowd. However, the innocence of the promotion was soon sullied by exponents of black humour who managed to get an image of mass-murdering doctor, Harold Shipman, into the army of inanimates. The early 2020 season Warriors performances would have been more at home with canned laughter playing as opposed to canned noise but, impressively, the Warriors showed absolutely no signs of homesickness as they clinically
Jim Birchall slayed the Dragons 18-0 in a remarkable display. To a casual observer, the scoreboard would have appeared underwhelming at the end but the Warriors displayed military-like discipline to complete a remarkable tackle completion rate of 44 straight sets, before making a tired error late in the game. A stiffer challenge awaited them at Campbelltown in round 4 against Ivan Cleary’s Panthers. The Panthers were still without coaches’ son - playmaker Nathan - who was sitting out another week after being banned for Tik Tok related bubble breaches. Not that it mattered for Penrith as they made short work of a Warriors side so terrific the week before, that metamorphosed back into their usual shambles, going down 26-0. Talking Rugby Union, the derby-riffic Super Rugby
Aotearoa has been confirmed for a June 13 return. The Blues are pitched against the Hurricanes in a game that should draw the hordes (virtually at least if we are still in level 2) of rugby-deprived public who will be salivating over Beauden Barrett’s eventual return against his old side. Cantabrians, already seething over the Blues’ latest acquisition of veteran Dan Carter, as an injury replacement, will have to wait another week to see their crusade continue after drawing the bye. The competition runs a paltry two games per weekend but sports lovers’ appetites should be satisfied once the Australian teams sort out their own competition, which will include the reinstated Western Force. Time will tell if a domestic-only format continues to appeal to viewers on both sides of the Tasman, once the afterglow of being released from couch-potato captivity is extinguished.
