Not Your Average Community Day By Matt Veronesi & Patrick Mangan The saying that we hear from a lot of people is “New Windsor Community Day is not your average Community Day!” We have not been to many other Town’s Community Day’s so we really can’t say whether that is true or not. But what we hear from people is that ours is in a different league. Maybe that comes from our competitive desire to want to get bigger and better every year. Our first Community Day took place on Saturday September 26th, 2009. It was a successful event with 2,500 people attending. We were very happy with the first event but decided that day that we wanted to grow it and make it better every year. Last year New Windsor Community Day took place on Saturday August 29th. We had more than 30,000 people attend over the course of the day

times community newspapers

competing with The Dutchess County Fair and the NY Air Show both on the same day. We have added many new attractions over the years to keep the growth happening such as professional wrestling, two live entertainment stages, a zip line, a stunt jump, a mechanical bull, an arcade trailer, a remote control race car track, a petting zoo, a tethered hot air balloon ride, singers from popular TV shows such as American Idol (Tim Urban), X-Factor,(Nick Dean) and the Voice(Caitlin Caporale), a carousel, a mechanical swings ride, a climbing wall, tons of bounces houses, the Tumblebus, slides, pony rides, a magician, a clown, a juggler, super heroes and princesses, and a bigger and better fireworks show every year. This year we have added a mechanical surf ride which is like a mechanical bull but instead of sitting on a bull you are standing on a surf

board, and helicopter rides. Visitors this year can purchase a 10 minute helicopter ride out to Bannerman’s Island and back. When people ask us “what are you guys going to add next year?” We look puzzled at each other shake our heads and say “we will think of something!” And let me tell you it is not easy to keep growing. Growth has its obstacles that are a challenge to overcome. One of those obstacles is a shortage of parking spaces. As the event grew we needed more and more parking spaces. First we started parking cars on the baseball fields which gave us 400 extra parking spaces we did not have before, but we still ran out of spaces. Then we had to add offsite parking with shuttle buses from Cornwall High School. Last year there were three or four times during the day that parking was full both onsite and at Cornwall High

Not Your Average Community Day Continued from page 5 School. So this year we built 150 more parking spaces at the park. I hope that is going to be enough or we will have to think of something else next year. Another problem that occurred with the event growing was that it was harder for handicapped or older event visitors to get around

to all of the areas of the park. We began offering multiple golf carts that shuttle people around between the different parts of the park including parking lots which has helped tremendously with that issue. Still another problem that occurred with the event growing so much was that we didn’t have enough electrical power. So we added three of

the big trailer generators in different locations of the park which has taken care of that. The generators are quiet and don’t generate nasty fumes like the smaller louder generators. The biggest problem that the growth of this event has caused us is the issue of added safety concerns because of the amount of people that come through the park on the day of Community Day. We ended up coming up with a Community Day Safety Committee that besides event organizers it is also comprised of members of the Police Department, the New Windsor and Vails Gate fire departments, the New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corp, and a

coordinator from the County Department of Emergency Services. We developed an Emergency Action Plan that covers all possible safety scenarios of an event of the size of this magnitude. Running events is no easy task, but it can be done and done successfully if you have a good plan and good people. And most importantly learn from your mistakes. If you can learn from what doesn’t go right in the previous years the event will only get better every year. Hopefully we will continue to grow this great event to serve the great residents of New Windsor and beyond year after year. The New Windsor Special Events Committee hopes everyone has a wonderful time!

Petting zoo named in memory of Jim Mangan By Matt Veronesi & Patrick Mangan This past May 4th New Windsor Resident Jim Mangan (father of Patrick Mangan) passed away after a courageous 12 year battle with cancer. Jim who lived in New Windsor for the past 32 years was a very young 63 years old. He volunteered for 10 years at New Windsor Little League, serving 2 years as president of the organization as he firmly believed in the value of organized sports in the development of children. After his passing Jim’s family asked that in lieu of flowers any memorial donations could be made in Jim’s memory to New Windsor Community Day. We decided there would be no better way to honor him than by having a Petting Zoo at Community Day named after him. Jim always loved animals as well as children and he would be so happy to see the smiles on all of the children’s faces as they enjoyed the

animals at Community Day. Over $1,500 was raised to pay for the petting zoo, much of which came from employees of the Town of New Windsor. Jim never missed a Community Day going to all seven events over the years even if his health was not 100%. Jim was not only an amazing person but was an even more amazing father. And though he will be greatly missed there is not a day that goes by that he will be forgotten. Everyone stop by the Petting Zoo this year and have a great time and think of Jim who is looking down on the event smiling. NEW WINDSOR COMMUNITY DAY 2016

American Idol contestant returns By Matt Veronesi Tim Urban was a contestant in 2010. Simon seemed like he was meaner than ever to contestants that season and he was especially hard on Tim. During the entire time Tim never once

let the criticism get to him always smiling a big smile and thanking the judges for their critique. And he kept getting America’s votes week after week getting through to the next rounds. He started winning over the judges even Simon, and one week Ellen

Degeneres was so moved by one of his performances that she ran up on the stage and gave him a hug. He ended up finishing seventh which was an amazing accomplishment for a 20 year-old kid from Dallas Texas going up against the 100,000 contestants that auditioned for the show that season. He was definitely my favorite contestant that year, and probably my all-time favorite on the show. That following January when I was booking my concerts for our Summer Concert Series for the fun of it I sent an email to Tim Urban’s booking email address to see what it would cost to bring him in for our concert series, thinking it would never be able to work.

When I heard back from Tim’s friend who was helping him book shows the concert fee wasn’t out of our budget but we would have to fly him in and put him up in a hotel. I was able to secure a sponsor for the airfare and the hotel and before you knew it he was flying in from Los Angeles to NY for a show in July of 2011. I picked him up at the airport not knowing what kind of kid he was going to be having heard such horror stories of what some entertainers were like. He seemed nice enough and as I was dropping him off at his hotel I mentioned, “Hey, if you are not too tired and feel like it, my wife and I are having a family picnic at my house tonight, you are more than welcome to join

us.” Never thinking he would take me up on my offer, figuring he would just want to crash at the hotel for the night. Next thing you know, he is at my house with my large family. In my mind I am thinking, “this poor kid isn’t going to know what hit him.” My uncle comes into the house not knowing Tim was there and announces “So Matt who is this Tim Urban guy you have playing at your concert is he related to Keith Urban?” I answered “well you can ask him he is sitting right there.” Tim answered in an Australian accent “He is a long lost uncle” He fit right in! I learned that day Tim comes from a family of 12 having nine brothers and sisters besides him. He is a great person who comes from an amazing family. Ever since

his first trip to New Windsor, Tim and I have become friends and now he comes into town every year to perform in the area. Five years have passed since we first met and now Tim is married to his wife Kate and has two daughters under the age of two years old, Bella and Nora. He is such an amazing singer who writes such great songs that really touch people, but unfortunately in the music business it is being at the right place at the right time or who you know. Tim hasn’t made it big yet where he has been able to sign a big record contract, but he is definitely talented enough. So if you love great music and want to meet a great guy, you can see Tim perform on Stage 1 at 8:15 p.m. You will not be disappointed!

Tim Urban also makes his annual appearance on the New Windsor concert stage this week.

The city council voted to temporarily appoint Deputy Mayor Regina Angelo to serve as mayor pro tem during Kennedy’s absence in August.
