e are in the age of social media and members of the younger generations are online daily with platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. They spend a lot of time watching videos, looking at pictures, and following different people. Social Media has become a great way for a young person to showcase a talent whether it is music, acting, modeling, or just making funny videos. Many current young stars have been discovered online including Justin Bieber who was one of the first exploding on YouTube in 2008, Carly Rae Jepsen, Shawn Mendes, Kate Upton, Cameron Dallas, Nash Grier, the Dolan Twins and so many more. But social media is just a platform for
these young performers to showcase their skills. Nothing every replaces the good old qualities of hard work to perfect the skill and the consistent putting out of quality videos or other posts that will help grow a following

on social media. And this mass following will then hopefully gain the attention of the decision makers of the entertainment industry thus signing this talent to music contracts, for TV and movies, to modeling contracts, and whatever else that can thrust them into the spotlight. One young singer named Shelton Taylor has started to gain a following on Instagram where he started by posting short musical covers when he was just 15. We had a chance to talk with Shelton recently and we believe this young man has a very bright future ahead of him and we are thrilled he is going to join us for New Windsor Community Day on Saturday August 26th. When we asked him how his rise

Instagram Star Shelton Taylor performing at New Windsor Community Day Continued from page 5 of popularity came about on social media he said that with him it definitely didn’t happen overnight. Though still young, Shelton says he wasn’t exactly an overnight sensation “I consistently posted covers that I enjoyed playing and had a passion for and was being persistent and hoped eventually they would catch on,” he recalled. “And then the next one would be better.” It was about a year of releasing his covers that his following really started to take off. Now at 17 he has roughly 150,000 followers on his different social media accounts. Shelton Taylor comes from the San Antonio Texas area and is the second oldest child from a family of 10, with his parents, four sisters and three brothers. Shelton says that he is very appreciative of the support that his family gives him, and coming from a big family is never boring. He really looks up to his parents as role models as well as his older brother Scott. Shelton has been playing and singing music for as long as he can remember. He said “music has really been a part of my life since I was really young. I remember singing in church at the age of five. That was my first time on a stage.” Besides singing Shelton plays the guitar and has started to learn to play the piano. He said “watching my grandfather play the guitar really mesmerized me, and inspired me and I kind of
knew it was going to be my thing.” Taylor cites as musical influences Bono, the Beatles, Jon Foreman from Switchfoot, and Jon Bellion “I really enjoy all of their music. It doesn’t have to be one person to base yourself off of, you can learn so much and take so much from different individuals.” He added “just this past week I was able to go see Ed Sheeran in concert in LA. It was just him and his guitar. I appreciate for sure that he can write songs people can hang on to. And he was also a great performer!” Watching his musical role models has taught Shelton a lot about what he needs to do to become an accomplished musician. He said “there never really is a limit to what you can do. Just always be working to get better than where you are today. Being a musician doesn’t mean going at it for a while and hoping you will be the best you can be. You have to go at it every day, and there will never be a point where I say I am as good as I can get. You are always learning!” Those are some pretty wise words from someone so young. He has some pretty lofty goals for his music too and it’s easy to believe he is off to a great start and will achieve them. He says his goals for music are creating something that people will be able to hold on to and appreciate and maybe even get something out of. Shelton says “that is enough for me just to know that people could possibly be changed by my music.”
page 8
Shelton has begun to write his own music, some of which he will perform at Community Day. “When writing songs for me there definitely is a process,” he said. “And I usually start with the melody first. A song without words still has an emotion to it. But I think the best songs come from the heart. And when writing songs from the heart based on what you are going through, those are the most powerful songs.” Check out Shelton Taylor’s Instagram account @ sheltontaylor and his website at sheltontaylormusic.com . And if you would like to meet Shelton and see him perform, come out to New Windsor

Community Day on Saturday August 26th where he will be doing a meet and greet at 6 p.m. and then performing on Stage one at 7:45 p.m. Running events is no easy task, but it can be done and done successfully if you have a good plan and good people. And most importantly learn from your mistakes. If you can learn from what doesn’t go right in the previous years the event will only get better every year. Hopefully we will continue to grow this great event to serve the great residents of New Windsor and beyond year after year. Orphaned Wildlife Center By Matt Veronesi When my family goes to a zoo, one of the attractions we always love to see are the bears. I always tease my five-year-old son Mattingly that I am going to jump into the cage with the bears and wrestle them. He says “but daddy you are going to get in trouble, and you are going to get hurt!” Little did I ever think that I would actually ever get to be face to face with a bear. I got my chance this past April when I visited the Orphaned Wildlife Center in the Otisville. The Orphaned Wildlife Center is run by Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose mission is to provide safety and nurturing love to animals that are truly orphaned and to prepare them to be returned to a life in the wild. One of the main animals they help are bears. Jim and Susan have 11 bears of varying species living
on their property. Some of the bears are part of their educational program called “Bear Country” where they have a big tractor trailer that has a walk through section where you can get up close with the bears and learn all about them.

We are very pleased to have this exhibit at New Windsor Community Day this year. It is one of our coolest new attractions. Having gotten to meet Jim and Susan and Kerry Clair who volunteers doing all of their social media and fundraising

Orphaned Wildlife Center Continued from page 14 None of the animals are taught tricks or to do anything. Jim and Susan live on a 100-acre property in Otisville. Most of their bears are rescued as cubs. They have Kodiak Brown Bears, Syrian Bears, and Black Bears. One of their bears Frankie, who is a black bear, was hit by a car in 2012 and had to have his leg completely rebuilt. He has made a full recovery and is doing great. Susan has worked with bears all of her life. Her father Albert Rix was a well-known circus veteran from Germany who raised Syrian Brown Bears. Jim who met Susan in 1992 and they married in 1995 got into bears once they met. Jim is a retired corrections officer who currently works in excavating. “The bears are like our children,” Jim said. “That is how much we love them, and they give a lot back to you too. They love you just as much.” Out of all of their life’s experiences, Jim and Susan say the time that they have spent in the company of their bears has been the most rewarding. Their unique relationship with them is based on endless trust and caring. What Jim and Susan do for these bears and for the other orphaned animals they have on their property is truly a great thing and takes very special people. They have very big hearts and what they do costs a lot of money. Though they have been licensed wildlife rehabilitators since 1996 they just became a not for profit 501(3)c in 2015 which
means people can make tax deductible donations which helps Jim and Susan care for so many animals. Which for years they have spent countless dollars caring for these wild animals on their own out of the goodness of their hearts. The bears feast on 30 pounds of food a day including a mix of meat, pet food, fruit, and an occasional marshmallow as a treat. Imagine trying to feed 11 of these bears and other animals.

The bear Jim and Susan have had the longest is Jimbo, who is a 22 year old 1400 pound male Kodiak Bear. He has been with them since he was three months old. Jimbo is the bear that I got to meet up close. He is extremely friendly and very good natured. It was an amazing experience getting to meet Jimbo and getting to pet him. He playfully bit the pocket and my sleeve of the sweatshirt I was wearing. I could feel how powerful

he was as he tugged on my sweatshirt. It was something I will remember for the rest of my life. If you would like more information on Jimbo and the Orphaned Wildlife Center please visit their website at orphanedwildlife.org . And come out to New Windsor Community Day on August 26 to see the bears up close. Now you won’t be able to pet the bears but you will get to see them up close in action!

City of Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy announced she will take a leave of absence due to surgery scheduled this month. She is expected to return to the job in September.
“It’s important city business continues without a bump or a wrinkle,”
Kennedy said at a special meeting of the Newburgh City Council Thursday. The city council voted to temporarily appoint Deputy Mayor Regina Angelo to serve as mayor pro tem during Kennedy’s absence in August. If needed, each council member will rotate serving as mayor pro tem in the months that follow. The council agreed on a resolution to serve in alphabetic order in the absence
