ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Scroll of honourfor Stafford Legion

The RoyalBritishLegion (RBL) in Staffordhavebeen presentedwithascrollfrom the Mayor to markthe granting of theFreedomofthe Boroughtothe organisation.

Stafford Borough Council granted‘Freedom’tothe Legion in recognition of its services to past and present membersofthe armed forces, veterans, and theirfamilies.

At arecentcouncil meeting, the Mayor, councillor TonyNixon, presentedthe ‘Freedom’ scroll to George Wright, the Honorary Chairman of the Stafford Branch of the RBL, to commemorate the award.

The Staffordbranch is celebrating its centenary year having been establishedinJuly 1921 andis one of theoldest in thecounty. It providesfinancial, social,and emotional care andsupport to all members of theBritish Armed Forces, pastand present, andtheir families.

Thecouncilhas the powerto confer honorary ‘Freedom’ to people or organisationsthathave given eminentservices to the borough. The proposal to honour the Legion was unanimously agreed by councillorsearlier this year –with council leader,Patrick Farrington, describingitasa “fitting honour. ”

Cllr Farrington, said:“TheRBL has beena wonderfulsupporttoso manyofthe serving andformer servicemen and women whohave made ourcounty town theirhome. “This is afitting tribute. An opportunity for us to providea lasting reminder of ourgratitude for allthey do which benefits the armed forcesveterans,their families,and ourtown. ”

He added: “Ourcouncillors voted unanimouslytobestow this honour on the RBLinthe summer which clearly demonstrates the warmth andappreciation we have for them andfor theirwork in Stafford. “This presentation wasespecially poignant as it takesplacewith the organisation celebrating 100yearsin our county town.”

Theleather-backedscrollis inscribedwith thecitation describingthe award andfeatures the borough CoatofArmsand the organisation’s membership badge. An entrywas also madeinthe Freedom‘roll of honour’ book.

The ReverendJohn Davies,on behalf of the Stafford branch, said: “It is agreat honour youhave bestowed uponus, andweaccept it withgreat pride.”

Othernotablerecipients of the awardincludethe 22 Signal Regimentofthe British Army and Tactical SupplyWingofthe RAF which arebasedinStafford. The last persontoreceivethe honour from the borough council wasOlympic gold-medal canoeist, Joe Clarkein 2016.
