L E T T E R S Looking for your “advice to the lovelorn” column Editor: She was a hoot. Sorry to see that she is gone. Claire Gerald Please revert Oakwood Park name change Editor: The intention of honoring our African American relatives and fellow neighborhood culture bearers is great. However, many in the Oakwood sub-area of Venice feel slighted about the lack of outreach as well as concerns about the possible adverse social, cultural, and economic implications of the hasty name change to Oakwood Park. As you know, the park is the centerpiece of the Oakwood area and a name that is culturally tied to the identity of the organic community and touted with much pride. Oakwood is also a name that many here have literally died for. Many feel slighted because there was no community outreach and only a very small faction of our neighborhood representatives were involved. The process lacked outreach to the native Oakwood-Venice community in general, but most notably disregarded collaboration and input from the Indigenous and Chicanx communities who also share equal heartfelt historical and cultural
ties to the area and the Oakwood name. As we move forward in our quest for racial justice, equity, and restorative justice initiatives it is important to understand that fight is intersectional. We should all understand that yes, each community has their unique needs, but reinforcing a Black/White binary, especially in a community like Venice, as we pursue racial justice will just make for harm against other historically targeted people. I am disappointed but hope you take sincere note and help us correct this hasty name change decision. Many Brown and Black native Venetians in the community are not taking this lightly and are mobilizing against the name change. I encourage you to seriously consider reverting the name back to Oakwood or at least come up with a name that is agreed upon via comprehensive collaboration between the historic Brown and Black communities of the Venice-Oakwood area. Beware of Scammers
By Debbie Dubb everal years ago, I received a phone call from an elderly lady who had fallen victim to a scammer posing as her phone provider. She paid him close to $1,000 to fix her “issue” before realizing it was a scam. She was referred to me to delete the remote access software that the scammer had instructed her to download onto her computer and to block the scammer’s phone numbers on her phone. Although I was aware of scammers, I wasn’t sure how to help her, so after doing some online research, I came across a YouTuber who goes by the pseudonym Jim Browning. Jim goes after scammers and with his technical skills, is able to access the scammers’ computers to save victims. He also tries to shut down call centers, many of them in India. I contacted Jim, who very kindly gave me instructions on how to block the scammer from accessing this lady’s computer. This phone call led me down a
S
very dark road: I wasn’t previously aware of the fact that in the U.S. alone, scammers rake in billions of dollars a year by duping their victims with stories of money owed or refunds due. The scammers send bulk emails, texts or phone calls claiming to be Social Security Administration, Norton, Microsoft, McAfee, Amazon, PayPal, etc. The scammer directs the victim to download software to take control of their computer and
PAGE 6 THE ARGONAUT JULY 14, 2022
tricks them into believing they mistakenly added too much money into their bank account while sending the “refund.” The victim is then instructed to repay the money via gift cards. Another tactic is to dupe the victim into believing there are viruses and hackers on their computer. These scammers rely on fake pop-ups that appear on a victim’s computer, warning them that their files will be deleted if action isn’t taken. The victim is
urged to purchase “security software” to stop this activity. Sometimes they instruct the victim to purchase a special “security card” from Target or Best Buy to stop the hackers. Lately they’ve been doing quick in and out transactions using Zelle or Cashapp. Some scammers even ask for cash to be mailed in a box, these are usually for transactions over $10,000. There are also the Publisher’s Clearing House scams, the utility bill scams, the “your grandchild is in jail and needs money for a lawyer” scams, and IRS scams. There are scams that pose as your bank, and even spoof the bank’s real phone number to trick you into believing your account was hacked. They all create some level of fear in their victim for their scam to work. Since my encounter with Jim, I have come across many people who go after these scammers. (The majority of the scammers are not in the U.S., so it becomes difficult to find and prosecute them). These so-called scam
baiters, some of whom livestream their baits daily on YouTube and Twitch and have over one million subscribers, are viewed by thousands of concerned people from all over the world. We watch and learn as the baiter pretends to be a person falling for the scam. The scammers are ruthless, spinning their tall tales and are frequently quite abusive to their “customers”…as they like to call the victims. The baiters with very particular technical skills can gain access to the scammers’ computers and even their webcams. Sometimes they find documents with “customer” information on these computers and devote their time calling these “customers” to warn them and try to help them recover their stolen money. There are others who get bank information from the scammers to report to the FBI. I’ve heard stories of baiters intercepting mailed packages of cash and (Continued on Page 19)

Andis Company hosts pop-up barbershop and art installation in Venice By Kamala Kirk o kick off the premier of its Brighter Community Series Mural, grooming and styling brand Andis Company hosted an art installation and pop-up barbershop with three barbers and stylists to offer free haircuts to the public in Venice Beach. The Andis Company is driven with a new mission, vision and values in all that is done—empowering creativity— believing creativity makes the world a better place, all while encouraging and inspiring others to create their own way. The one-of-a-kind mural was designed and hand painted by the team at Mural Art & Consulting and is a colorful depiction of creativity and playfulness all while highlighting the brand’s barbering heritage.

“The Andis Company is excited to bring our Brighter Community Series to Venice, a city steeped in surf, sport and car culture,” said Angie Vlasaty Peterson, the company’s vice president of marketing. “We know creativity makes the world a better place and this mural celebrates the vibrancy of our brand’s creators, especially the barbers and stylists who create in the shop or salon every day. We created the Brighter Community Series to encourage those creators that are all around us—to stand out, to make a difference. We hope this mural inspires everyone that walks past it.”

minimizing their shopping to one location. This attention to detail is also brought to the fish and meat that McCall’s sells. “Sourcing is always done with flavor and quality first,” Schneider said, though sustainability, humane products and an absence of hormones and genetically modified organisms are also significant parts of the equation. Free parking in the back makes it easy to navigate an often packed Montana Avenue and get home quickly with all the ingredients for a delicious meal. Take it from Schneider: “It’s all about the extra details. There is nothing like what we are doing in the area.”

GENRE: Magical Realism Fictional Memoir
By Oliver Grynberg cCall’s Meat and Fish Co., a neighborhood staple in Los Feliz for over a decade, has opened a new location on Santa Monica’s popular Montana Avenue. Founded in 2010 by specialty chefs Nathan McCall and Karen Yoo, the one-stop shop for gourmet groceries, meat and fish focuses on providing fine-dining and restaurant quality products for local customers. In January 2022, new owners David and Michelle Sarraf opened the Santa Monica location to expand McCall’s reach and to bring their services to an area with few options for high-quality meat and fish. In Los Feliz, McCall’s thrived on strong relationships with local residents and chefs. “I’ve seen kids go from middle school to college,” said Olin Schneider, vice president of operations. “We wanted a neighborhood feel. We’d keep coming back to that when we’d walk on Montana.” The new location brings eastside vendors to the Westside, while highlighting other local small businesses. Eastside products like Kruegermann Pickles, Zab’s Hot Sauce and Jam from the restaurant Sqirl are all available at the new McCall’s. The location is the only Westside retail spot to sell Jyan Isaac Bread apart from Isaac’s own bakery on Ocean Park Boulevard. Isaac, who began selling bread during quarantine to

Upgraded Prenatal Nutrition
Needed products provide high-quality nourishment for women By Michele Robinson ulie Sawaya and Ryan Woodbury met as next-door neighbors and classmates at Stanford’s business school. They shared similar interests, including a lifelong passion for nutrition, and thought they were making all the right healthy food choices. With multiple nutrition certifications under their belts, they shopped at farmers markets and prepared health-conscious meals. However, even with all of their nutritional knowledge, they still came up short. “As the most nutrition-conscious of all of our friends, we were shocked to discover through nutrient testing that we both had major nutritional deficiencies,” Sawaya said. “Food wasn’t cutting it.” This was also around the same time they witnessed their friends starting families and having problems with either conceiving or pregnancy loss. Some friends also experienced complications like extreme nausea and difficulty healing postpartum. “These two experiences–knowing we were majorly deficient despite trying to be optimally nourished, and that our friends weren’t getting the nutrition advice they needed–led us to dive deep into the clinical research to understand what women need, and why so many needs are unmet,” Woodbury said. Sawaya added, “What we learned was that 97% of women in this life stage take a prenatal–it’s virtually ubiquitous. And yet upwards of 95% of women are nutritional deficient.” Realizing there was a substantial need to create an optimal formula that worked for women in this stage of their life, Needed was conceptualized in 2017. “We started Needed in 2017 and spent three-and-a-half years formulating our products from the ground up before launching them at the end of 2020,” Woodbury said. The primary purpose of their products is to best nourish women and their families from preconception to postpartum with the highest quality nutrition. There is also a men’s formula to promote optimum health for dads during their partner’s childbearing years. In order to make Needed successful, Sawaya and Woodbury

Stanford graduates Julie Sawaya and Ryan Woodbury founded Needed, a line of prenatal nutritional products, in 2017. consulted with many professionals in various fields and their products are backed by nutrition and health experts. “To do so, we partnered with women’s nutrition and health practitioners who focus on this life stage and test women’s nutrient and hormone levels, day-in and day-out, to understand better what women actually need to be optimally well,” Woodbury said. Rooted in California, Needed is based on the Westside. Woodbury, a Santa Monica resident, is thrilled to be back on the West Coast. “We are proud to be an LAfounded company,” Woodbury said. “We’re fortunate to partner with experts from all across the country and now the world, but our roots are especially strong here in LA and in California.” Until last January, Sawaya and Woodbury were the company’s only full-time employees. Even though they have always collaborated with other professionals, they are now branching out to offer virtual employment to others. “We’re now building a small full-time team that works remotely, which is a great setup given that our team is almost entirely composed of mothers to young children (or pregnant mothers to-be),” Sawaya said. Part of their company’s mission is to make quality nutritional products more accessible by making them directly available to the consumers. Historically, consumers could only get the best products via a qualified nutrition practitioner, but Needed is changing this. “Today, we are hyper-focused on meeting the unmet needs of women and men during the
perinatal phase more completely than any other company on the market,” Sawaya said. Looking to the future, the co-founders are excited about expanding their line. “With the recent launch of our Trimester Plans, we make it super easy to meet your comprehensive needs at every stage of this journey,” Woodbury said. “Our upcoming product pipeline will have products focused on stage-specific concerns like nausea in the first trimester, digestion in the second trimester, and the microbiome of breastmilk in the fourth trimester, and much more.” They are also interested in making more products that can reach all people in various stages of their lives. “With time, we’ll offer products for children, as well product lines for women and men before and beyond the perinatal phase,” Woodbury said. “A children’s line is the top request from our practitioner and customer base, as childhood nutrition and health is so intimately tied to the perinatal stage,” adds Woodbury. Needed can be purchased on the website, Amazon, Fullscript.com or at select practitioner’s offices throughout the country. “We are the number one women’s health brand on Fullscript.com, which is the leading practitioner-grade supplement dispensary,” Sawaya said. “We’re especially proud of this, as it is a testament to the trust practitioners have in our company and products.” Needed thisisneeded.com Instagram: @needed

Summer Magic
Santa Monica’s Morgan-Wixson Theatre presents two classic tales with twists
T
Cinderella enchants and surprises
PHOTOS COURTESY OF MORGAN-WIXSON THEATRE
By Bridgette M. Redman he beginning of a magical summer launched on July 9 at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica. Fresh off a production of “Frozen Jr.,” July 9 to 24 will see two fairy tale-filled shows on their stages: “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” and “Bedtime Stories (As Told by Our Dad) (Who Messed Them Up).” The bedtime stories show is for the youth and is performed at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, while Cinderella is the mainstage show at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Niko Montelibano directs the mainstage musical with the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein music and a new contemporary book by Douglas Carter Beane. While it has all the beloved elements of the traditional fairy tale, the story has been modernized with a more independent heroine and other new twists. “Audiences are going to come in and want to hear ‘It’s Possible’ and the prince giving a ball and they’re going to want to fall in love with ’10 Minutes Ago,’” Montelibano said. “Then the new script—with a couple new songs—is going to subvert expectations and leave people with something new that they get to take home with them. From July 9 to 24, the Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica is presenting two fairy talefilled shows on their stages: “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” and “Bedtime Stories (As Told by Our Dad) (Who Messed Them Up).” new layer to something they already know and love.” Among the changes are deeper dives into each of the characters, especially one of the step-sisters who in this version is named Gabrielle and gets her own storyline. It also gives the audience a better look at the prince and his struggles at stepping into royalty. After nearly two years of pandemic, the board of MorganWixson wanted this summer to be a splashy welcome back to its audiences. So, Montelibano said much of his vision for this show was creating a traditional, familiar feeling. “We’ve got the pumpkin, we’ve got the ball gowns, we’ve got all the fabrics and all those beautiful things,” Montelibano said. “The set design we have is beautiful, the costumes that our costume designer is putting together are great. Because this version of the script was a little more cutting edge and realistic than a traditional fairy tale, we didn’t want to divert too much from those classic visual elements. There’s a little bit of the classics that you’re going to see and love, but because the script is new and different, it really focuses on the lives of these characters.” Katelyn Coon is playing the title character with Eadric Einbender as her prince, Topher. Montelibano said they make an
incredible pair whose voices blend beautifully. “Our Cinderella is this lovely woman I’ve had the chance to work with once before,” Montelibano said. “She is absolutely darling. Her acting is incredible, she sounds lovely and she has an incredible stage presence.” He said he’s also excited to work with Einbender, a nonbinary performer who last performed with Morgan-Wixson as Jo March in “Little Women.” He describes them as a powerhouse performer. “This classic prince is just a testament to their talent,” Montelibano said. “It’s been such a pleasure to watch them on stage. I’m so excited for the world to meet them.” Montelibano is eager to give audiences something they’ve likely known all their life, but in a version that is new and refreshed. “It’s really going to excite people who are just looking to have a good time,” Montelibano said. “I’m excited for people to leave with something new to love to add to their Cinderella journey.”
Play’s dad puts new spin on old favorites While “Cinderella” has some
new twists and storylines, the youth theater production turns its traditional tales completely on their heads. It’s led by a dad trying to get his kids to sleep, but is a little fuzzy on the details of their bedtime stories. He’s a father who gets creative with the classics—there is a prince with a snoring problem in “The Princess and the Pea,” a boy who cried dinosaur instead of wolf, and a Rumpelstiltskin who turned that glaring gold into a far more useful straw. Heidi Dotson directs this latest production in the Youth Education/Entertainment Series (Y.E.S.) at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre. The all-youth cast (ages 8 to 14) includes many who have been involved with other youth productions, some from the most recent “Frozen Jr.” Tegan Blaine is a returning actress and she said, “I am so excited to be in ‘Bedtime Stories’ after such a great ‘Frozen Jr.’ experience. But I have to warn you, the title is misleading—hopefully no one will be put to sleep during this comedic show!” Dotson, a first-grade teacher who is directing at MorganWixson for the first time, said she loves traditional fairy tales, folk tales and tall tales—especially when they are given a new spin and perspective. Many
years ago, she even wrote a play that told “Jack and the Beanstalk” from the point of view of the cow. It’s made the show a good fit with its quirky twists and willingness to play fast and loose with traditional plots. At one point, one of the kids asks for a bedtime story about a dinosaur. “The dad goes, ‘There are no bedtime stories about dinosaurs,’” Dotson said. “Why is that? That’s my ultimate question: Why are there no traditional stories about dinosaurs?” The set is simple, in part because it is being performed on the “Cinderella” set. They have a bed, a rock, a chair and a table. Even many of the sound effects are created by the actors. Dotson hopes people will come with the goal of having fun and getting a chance to laugh. However, she also hopes that they will appreciate the talent of the young people performing. “Come see how much these kids have learned and what they’re doing with the performances,” Dotson said. “It’s just amazing how responsible they are. They have to check their own props and make sure everything is ready. They have to be really responsible and then they have to be willing to get up there and speak in front of an audience and to be silly and do ridiculous things. It’s just amazing to see what they do.” Dotson said there are several hat tips to adults—things she’s had to explain to her performers such as a George W. Bush joke and references to George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” “The sheep actually say, ‘Four legs good. Two legs bad.’” Dotson said.
The directors of both shows hope that people who have never been to the Morgan-Wixson Theatre, which is in its 76th season, will come out and see what they have to offer. “The Morgan-Wixson is kind of a hidden gem in Santa Monica,” Dotson said. “They have their mainstage shows and they have this wonderful youth program and there are people who don’t even know about it. I would love to see all their shows sold out constantly because they do such great work.” Montelibano also called it a hidden gem, even though they are one of the longestrunning theater companies in the area. He said a lot of people aren’t prepared for the beauty of the theater. “They don’t expect to see a beautiful proscenium stage, especially in LA— we’re used to black box theaters now,” Montelibano said. “This is such a lovely place. We’ve got over 200 seats, you don’t expect it when you’re walking by on Pico. I would be excited for Argonaut readers to come and experience this part of Santa Monica that they might not have known before.”

Beware of Scammers (Continued from Page 6)
retrieving over $30,000 from the mules (those who collect the stolen money in the U.S.) and returning them to victims. Many victims are unfortunately not able to recover their lost funds and must live with the consequences of having been duped and are left with a very depleted bank account. I’ve even heard of people committing suicide after having all their money stolen. In my business, I deal with many “technologically challenged” people and regularly warn them about these scams. I’ve received numerous phone calls, asking me if I think the person on the phone is a scammer. Inevitably it’s a scam and my job turns into “cleaning up” after scammers have gained access to someone’s computer. Most were fortunately able to recognize that it was a scam, stop it in its tracks, hang up and call me before handing out any money. Some scammers get vindictive at this point and lock the victim’s computer with a passcode. This makes my job a lot harder. My goal in writing this is to create more
awareness about these scams. A man I spoke to recently insisted that the email he received was from the “real Norton”—until I instructed him to call his bank to find out if he really had the $3,000 they had supposedly given to him “by mistake.” While still on the phone with me, he did just that and became extremely distressed when he realized they had taken all but $500 out of his bank account. He had never heard about these scams before. This really surprised me as I was under the impression that most people know that these emails are fake. Scammers are ruining the lives of innocent people and I am making a concerted effort to educate people about them. From the FDIC website: Be suspicious if someone contacts you unexpectedly online and asks for your personal information. It doesn’t matter how legitimate the email or website may look. Only open emails, respond to text messages, voice mails, or callers that are from people or organizations you know, and even then, be cautious if they look questionable. Grand Reopening
Santa Monica History Museum celebrates Juneteenth and latest exhibition By Kamala Kirk After being closed for the past two years due to the pandemic, the Santa Monica History Museum hosted a special event on June 16 to celebrate the museum’s grand reopening and Juneteenth. Attendees also had the chance to view the museum’s latest exhibition, “Broadway to Freeway: Life and Times of a Vibrant Community.” The exhibition, created in partnership with Quinn Research Center, highlights a thriving, tightknit and predominantly African American community in Santa Monica through the first half of the 20th century until the I-10 freeway challenged its existence. It is supported in part by a grant from the City of Santa Monica and with support from the California Humanities, a partner of the NEH. The museum also presented a string
quartet performance of Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 “American” by the Orchestra of Santa Monica. The performance is a piece inspired by African American spirituals during Dvořák’s stay in the U.S. in the late 19th century. “The event went very well,” said John Kearns, president of Santa Monica History Museum. “We had more than 80 guests as we officially reopened the museum after more than two years and the string quartet performance from the Orchestra of Santa Monica was truly amazing.”
Gina Frazier and Joanne Berlin were among the event's attendees.

6 Tips For Staging When Selling Real Estate Real Estate agents and owners alike take many factors into consideration when wishing to sell a home, including where to advertise, whether to list with multiple agents, what and how much are similar homes priced in your area, setting a reasonable sales price, and enhancing the curb appeal of a house by getting rid of clutter and perhaps planting a few flowers or resodding part of the lawn. One area that both agents and private sellers alike often overlook is house staging. Have you ever watch an episode of Million Dollar Listing where top real estate agents sell million dollar properties? The agents never show a home naked; they are willing to spend top dollar to private staging agents to ensure the home looks inviting.
statistics show the selling price of a house increases by as much as 6-20 percent, merely through staging. That said, here are several tips for staging and getting top dollar in the process: Tips to look for when staging Real estate agents report that women, overwhelmingly influence whether a couple buys or not. So a few things to have when staging include: 1. Having a nice looking refrigerator in the kitchen. If there is an old fridge or no fridge at all, the kitchen just looks naked. You can rent one for a few dollars per week.
2. Have an area rug, a nice couch, a couple of ferns and lamps, and perhaps a classy, framed portrait the living room. The living room It’s not necessary to spend thousands in should look comfy and inviting. Even of dollars to decorate a house though it’s not part of the home, before selling, but keep in mind that consider relocating or renting a large

screen television to cap up the look and feel. The look to go for is light and bright. 3. Have a bed with a classy comforter, an easy chair, a quality lamp and another framed portrait in the master bedroom. Here too, consider adding a couple of houseplants. Decorating every bedroom is not necessary if expenses are a factor, but at least the master bedroom should be extremely inviting. Consider, at a minimum, at least area rugs and a couple of portraits for the other bedrooms. 4. Decorate the bathrooms. It typically takes less than $25 to decorate a bathroom, and the impact plays big on certain clients’ sensibilities. 5. If there is a swimming pool or backyard barbecue, stage it as well. A barbecue set and a decorated table with chairs, or a pool surrounded by
a couple of umbrellas and some deck chairs help transform a house into a potential home. Try, as far as possible to get people to see in their minds, the advantages of living there. 6. Consider removing any inessential furniture. You may love that classic, lived-in lounger, but chances are your potential buyers may not. You can update a room, and make it look larger, but adding a few key pieces and removing the rest. Home staging makes good sense. It can attract more offers, and at a higher average price. So consider it when selling a house. For more information about how staging can increase your home’s sales price, contact your local trusted Realtor today. THIS WEEK’S CONTRIBUTION CAME FROM:
