Dear Friends,

André Leon Talley, the late creative director and editor-at-large for Vogue Magazine, is credited with words to live by. “Dream big, then do your homework.” So true. How many of us do the dream, then neglect the homework part?

This idea resonates with me; I dwell on the concept often at 3 am. “Have I done the work required to reach my goal?” Follow that with, “Have I cut corners rather than putting in the true required concentrated effort?” Let’s be clear. We want to believe we have done our best whenever questioning the result of any particular goal. Yet, perhaps we have just not done enough “homework” when the result falls short of the “dream.” So then, what is the next step? Give up? Start over? Forget the entire matter? No, the next step is do more “homework.” Work harder, smarter, more honestly.

Why this philosophical rant in a welcome letter for the Bay Window March issue featuring the Hoag Classic Golf Tournament at Newport Beach Country Club?

Simple answer: The sport of golf is an ultimate example of “dreaming big,” then “doing the homework.” Golf requires lifetime dedication to “make it happen.” To be on the roster of the PGA Champions Tour, every player rising to the plateau of professional golf has worked and struggled and overcome and finally reached their personal best. We mortals will line the fairways and overflow the hospitality tents to catch a glimpse of that “amazing shot” that separates the driven from the dreamer. It is why we idolize our champions; if we had the talent, would we have that drive to bring it all together? Pun not intended, but appropriate.

For this reason, it is significant to note that the Hoag Classic features a special student day and a military day among its programs in advance of champion play set for March 6-8. Free admission for school age youth and military is all about inspiration. In order to dream big, one must experience the thrill. Perhaps a high school freshman or an 18-year-old newly enlisted military member might actually find a path to a personal dream and set a goal at The Classic.

Please read on as Bay Window features all of the information you need to follow the tournament this year along with our regular coverage of life and times at Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach Country Club and Balboa Bay Resort. One more thought, age does not matter for the dreamer. Yes, big dreams are certainly meant for the young. They are also meant for the “young at heart.” It is not too late to “dream big,” but only if you are ready to do your “homework.” Certainly, all of the PGA Champions, some well past 50 years of age, know this well.

Here’s to a fantastic Hoag Classic 2022 and a very big thank you to all who make it possible, raising significant money for Hoag Hospital, and other worthy causes in the O.C.

Fore!

Best, Bruce

Hoag Classic 2022 Welcome Letter

Dear Members and Guests,

From March 2 to 6, the eyes of the golfing world will be focused on Orange County as the Hoag Classic returns to Newport Beach Country Club. As it has every year since it was established, the 2022 tournament will feature exciting competition among golf legends such as Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, KJ Choi, Mike Weir, David Duval and 2020 Champion Ernie Els, who will be back to defend his title.

The health and safety of the community is important and every measure necessary is being taken to ensure that the safety of attendees, players, volunteers, organizers and vendors is at the forefront of the weeklong festivities.

On March 2 and 3, the Legends Pro-Am presented by Konica Minolta will be the first tournament-week event open to the public. Attending these days gives fans an opportunity to catch golf legends in a relaxed environment before the formal competition begins.

The Hoag Classic Championship weekend will officially begin on Friday, March 4 with a variety of activities. On Saturday, March 5, we will honor current and former service men and women with Military Appreciation Day presented by CoreLogic. To show our collective appreciation for their service to our nation, on this day all active duty, military reserve, national guard, military retirees, and veterans will receive complimentary admission for themselves and one guest.

The final round of competition will take place on Sunday, March 6, when attendees ages 18 and under will receive complimentary admission for Student Day presented by Kingston Technology. The day will also feature an Autograph Arena where all students can get their favorite players’ autographs.

I emphasize the following every year because it cannot be overstated: NONE of the thrilling competition and accompanying activities of the Hoag Classic would be possible without the support of the event’s many volunteers. Each year, more than 1,000 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds generously donate their time and energy to ensure the Classic runs smoothly. Meanwhile, 250 sponsors contribute to this impressive effort, which attracts more than 80,000 spectators.

In 1952, Hoag was founded on a vision – and a promise – to provide compassionate, world-class health care to the Orange County community. Today, nearly 70 years later, that vision and promise are stronger than ever. Through the proceeds it generates, the Hoag Classic is an important community event that helps to ensure Hoag remains one of America’s leading medical institutions. As golf champions prepare to tee off, Hoag pledges to be a steadfast champion for residents’ good health and wellness.

We look forward to seeing you on the course!

2022 Hoag Classic Expected Field List

ERNIE ELS…MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON AND OFF THE GOLF COURSE

In 2020, the Hoag Classic hosted Presidents Cup team captain and four-time major champion, Ernie Els, for his inaugural appearance at Newport Beach Country Club.

In just his third career Champions Tour start, the “rookie” captured the Hoag Classic trophy. Els earned a two-stroke victory Sunday over the trio of Fred Couples, Robert Karlsson, and Glen Day. Els birdied three of his final seven holes coming down the stretch - including No. 18 - on his way to capturing the title. Ernie Els returns, looking to not only defend his title but to become the first back-to-back champion of the Hoag Classic. He battles other past champions in the field including 2016 and 2007 Champion, Jay Haas, 2014 and 2010 Champion, Fred Couples, 2018 Champion, Vijay Singh, and 2019 Champion, Kirk Triplett.

In addition to Els’ successful golf career, he shares a passion for helping those on the autism spectrum through his charity, Els for Autism. His dedication to better understanding the aspirations of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) comes from his son Ben who was diagnosed with ASD at age five. Els for Autism is a game-changing resource, delivering and facilitating programs that are leading examples of what can be available to people with ASD. THE BIGGEST NAMES ON THE PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS ROSTER TURN OUT FOR THE 26TH EDITION OF THE CLASSIC PLAYED ON THE GREENS OF THE NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Old guys rule.

Just kidding, of course. But now that the PGA Tour flat bellies have packed up their white belts, swing coaches and agents and headed to Florida in their private jets, it’s a sign that spring is near and that the PGA Tour Champions pros—the 50-and-over “old guys” with the glittering resumes—will soon arrive for their annual stop in the Hoag Classic at Newport Beach Country Club (March 4-6).

This will be the 26th edition of the Hoag Classic, rebranded three years ago when Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian added the role of title sponsor after serving two decades as tournament host, manager and charitable beneficiary. And once again, the Champions tour’s marquee event will draw one of the strongest fields and is expected to attract the usual huge galleries—especially after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2021 tournament.

The biggest names on PGA Tour Champions always draw big crowds at Newport Beach Country Club. After all, in how many other sports can you watch Hall of Famers compete every week?

“I think the tour could be called PGA Tour Legends,” said Jeff Purser, longtime executive director of Hoag Charity Sports, which runs the tournament. And why not? In any given week, there are always a few World Golf Hall of Famers teeing it up in a Champions event.

That will be the case again this month at Newport Beach Country Club, with four-time major champion Ernie Els defending his 2020 Hoag Classic title and leading a field that also includes ageless Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion who won his record sixth season-long Charles Schwab Cup series trophy at age 64 in November.

Newport Beach Country Club will welcome at least seven World Golf Hall of Famers—Els, Langer, Fred Couples, Mark O’Meara, Colin Montgomerie, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen—and possibly an eighth if 2021 PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson is a late commitment to the tournament.

Mickelson, a 45-time PGA Tour winner and six-time major champion, won four of the six Champions events he entered during the Champions tour’s wraparound 2020-21 season, including the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix. His status for the Hoag Classic was up in the air in mid-February because The Players Championship (for which he qualified by winning the PGA Championship) is scheduled in Florida the week after the Hoag.

Another noteworthy addition to the field, who will be making his first appearance in Newport Beach, is former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk, who finished second to Langer in the 2020-21 Schwab Cup season series and won three times in his rookie year on PGA Tour Champions.

Furyk also won 17 PGA Tour titles (including the 2003 U.S. Open), was the 2010 FedEx Cup winner and PGA Tour Player of the Year, and he is the only player in history to shoot two rounds under 60 in tour history. He also will be the featured speaker at the annual “Breakfast with a Champion” at Newport Beach Country Club during tournament week.

Two other fan favorites in the field will be Coto de Caza resident Paul Goydos, a four-time PGA Tour Champions winner, and two-time major champion John Daly.

The 2022 Hoag field also features first-time participants David Duval—a former World No. 1 and 13-time PGA Tour winner—former Masters champion Mike

Weir, K.J. Choi, Robert Allenby and Stuart Appleby. Duval, Allenby and Appleby all turned 50 last year.

“We are very pleased with the field,” Purser said in early February. “We have Furyk and Duval coming in for the first time and a number of Hall of Famers returning. That is what the tour is; it’s always about the next group (of eligible stars). It refreshes every two or three years.

“But even if you aren’t a Hall of Famer or a living legend, all of these guys are known by golf fans. They are all champions. And it’s great to have all the guys back in Newport Beach.”

One guy who never left Newport Beach during the two years since the most recent Hoag Classic is Fred Couples, a resident in neighboring Corona del Mar, which means he will be the player with the shortest commute to Newport Beach Country Club (not counting the tour pros who will stay at the nearby Balboa Bay Resort).

Couples, 62, is a two-time Hoag Classic champion— in 2010 and 2014, when the event was known as the Toshiba Classic— and is a contender to win every time he tees it up at NBCC.

During the most recent Hoag Classic in 2020, Couples tied for second, one shot behind champion Ernie Els. In eight appearances in Newport Beach, Couples has never finished out of the top 10, with two wins, two second-place finishes and two fifth-place finishes. He’s also a combined 98-under par in 24 career rounds at NBCC.

Couples also is arguably the most popular player in the field every year, with many of his friends and fellow members at Big Canyon Country Club showing up to cheer him on. The biggest galleries have followed him during tournament week since he joined PGA Tour Champions in 2010, and the fans became louder after he bought property and moved to Newport Beach in 2015.

“I love Newport Beach,” Couples said during a previous interview at NBCC. “It’s great living here. It’s very quiet, nice. And it’s one of my favorite tournaments. I just really like the course. I think it fits my game.”

Couples says NBCC’s small greens and its flat, treelined fairways remind him of Jefferson Park in Seattle, a municipal course a few blocks from where he lived when he was growing up. It’s the oldest public course in Seattle, and it’s where he grooved his swing playing hundreds of times with his buddies.

“Newport has the best crowds, too,” said Couples, the 1992 Masters champion and winner of 15 PGA Tour events (including two at Riviera Country Club) and 13 PGA Tour Champions titles. “We get a lot of people to come here, and it makes for a great week.

“This is not because I live near here. If I lived in Seattle, where I grew up, I’d still play in this tournament every year. The players all love it.”

Sometimes, they have to wait more than a year, but they always come back.

Like the old guys, Newport Beach Country Club rules, too.

Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag

Aportion of the proceeds raised at the 2022 Hoag Classic will benefit the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag, which provides comprehensive services for those with, or at risk for diabetes regardless of their ability to pay. The tournament has generated more than $20 million to benefit Hoag and other local charities throughout its history.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that nearly 30 million Americans live with diabetes and more than 86 million Americans are at increased risk for diabetes. Recognizing that Orange County is deeply affected by this chronic disease, the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of adults and children with diabetes through its robust roster of clinical, educational, and support services. Hoag was recently ranked #22 in the nation for diabetes and endocrinology care by U.S. News & World Report, and through the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center offers innovative and customized programs including medical nutrition therapy, ADA accredited diabetes self-management education, the Mary and Lee Iacocca Program in Type 1 Diabetes, diabetes device training and a comprehensive “Sweet Success” program for pregnant women with diabetes.

Additionally, the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center is committed to outreach and programs that provide care to underserved populations. When their granddaughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of two and a half, Mary and Dick Allen turned to Hoag’s medical leadership for guidance and training. Their granddaughter’s illness has led to a resolve extending beyond the experiences of their own family; this experience inspired the Allens to become advocates for the diabetes community. They see it as their mission to educate and support others who live with diabetes.

In an unprecedented demonstration of collaboration and commitment to diabetes care, Hoag has partnered with other institutions such as CHOC to ensure that all members of our community have timely access to comprehensive and expert diabetes prevention, care, and education.

For more information regarding services at the center, visit Hoag.org/Diabetes.

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Dear NBCC Members,

Last summer, we shared an announcement about projects on our golf course that would consist of repairs and maintenance to landscapes, bunkers, tees and greens.

This first phase of this project was completed in Fall 2021. The second phase of this repair and maintenance project will begin on April 4, and is projected to be completed by June 30. This timeframe was selected to ensure optimal growing conditions based on temperature and daylight, which will speed up the recovery time and make the golf course available for play as soon as possible.

During these three months, there will always be at least nine holes available for play each day and the driving range will continue to remain open. The nine holes may vary by day, and the arrangement of holes will change as well (for example, some holes from front nine and some from the back nine).

During the week of April 4, we will begin work on the back nine of the golf course. We will proceed with the entire back nine of the golf course first, with the front nine holes available for play.

Approximately 45 days later, we will proceed with the project on the entire front nine of the golf course, with the back nine holes available for play. Again, we anticipate the entire project to be complete, with the repair and maintenance workers leaving the club, on June 30.

Some of the highlights include:

• Tees: All tees will be expanded, leveled and re-grassed.

• Landscapes: Landscaping will be added on hole 2 (right side), hole 5 (tee box), hole 13 (right side), hole 17 and holes 15/18 (tee box areas).

• Bunkers: All bunkers on the golf course will be repaired with new drainage and sand (except previously repaired bunkers on holes 6 and 7).

• Cart Path Repair: Cart path repairs and improvements will take place throughout the course to fix broken and cracked areas.

Learn a Lesson

PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION CAN HELP YOU GET STARTED ON THE COURSE OR ENHANCE YOUR GAME.

Although golf has been around for hundreds of years, those just starting out would be wise to take a lesson. There are numerous rules and techniques that are often difficult to pick up just by heading out on the course. Lessons are essential for learning the foundation of the sport as well as picking up tips and tricks from a professional who has dedicated his or her life to playing the game. But according to Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country

Club, lessons aren’t just for beginners; they can be pivotal for experienced golfers as well. “Lessons are a valuable tool to anyone who wants to improve,” he says. “They provide the golfer with a clear plan on how to make positive changes to their golf swing, which can help them lower their scores and enjoy the game of golf.”

Here, Borunda reveals how lessons can help you improve, the types offered here at NBCC and more.

BAY WINDOW: How can lessons improve your golf game?

CARLO BORUNDA: Lessons provide the needed confidence that most athletes seek when trying to reach their goals. Through lessons, you and your coach can evaluate your technique and develop a clear path for improvement.

BW: What are the different types of lessons offered at NBCC?

CB: Our golf professionals provide several ways for NBCC members to improve. Our members have the ability to take individual one-on-one private, semi-private or group lessons. We have weekly clinics for juniors and adults where we review the fundamentals and teach strategies to improve through supervised practice. Each lesson type is tailored to the individual. We also provide video analysis, launch monitor testing, club fitting and on-course playing lessons.

BW: Which elements are typically covered in golf lessons?

CB: Lessons typically begin with a discussion of the golfer’s goals and a review of previous lessons, if any were taken. Next, your golf coach will address your immediate needs for the current lesson. They need to watch you swing the golf club so they can evaluate your setup fundamentals, balance and analyze your technique. This process usually takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on the student. The remaining lesson time is used to help you learn the skills you need to improve. Lessons should conclude with some homework, which includes specifying what to concentrate on when practicing, relevant drills and a review of lesson notes that were taken during the lesson.

Group lessons are a great way to experience supervised practice.

BW: Who would be considered a beginner versus an intermediate/advanced golfer?

CB: I consider someone to be a beginner when they still need to learn the fundamentals of the golf swing. This also includes someone who hasn’t [yet] played on the golf course, where they can test their abilities and understanding of the game. An intermediate-level golfer is someone who regularly plays the game, but hasn’t achieved the ability to score near or below 72 when playing a full round of 18 holes. An advanced golfer is someone who can consistently play a round of golf with a score that is close to or below 72. Many intermediate golfers are close to the advanced level, but they usually struggle with some swing flaw that causes them to lose confidence as they play.

BW: Would it benefit a more advanced golfer to take lessons as well?

CB: Yes, golf is a very difficult sport to play at an advanced level. Once you have reached the advanced golfer level, it is important to have a coach who you can trust to make the necessary adjustments to your game. The best golfers in the world develop and maintain close relationships with their coaches through countless hours of practice and instruction time.

BW: How often do you think golfers should take lessons when working to improve their golf game?

CB: The average golfer should consider a weekly or bi-weekly lesson plan based on their availability. It’s important to stay consistent with regular lessons for your coach to monitor your progress and make adjustments when needed.

BW: What tips do you have for setting goals for lessons?

CB: I recommend that you write down specific goals before taking a lesson or series of lessons. For example, you may want to learn how to properly aim at your target or improve your sand bunker technique. These goals need to be shared and discussed with your coach so you can stay focused on the lesson plan. Implementing improvements to the way you swing a golf club takes time to learn and own. Trusting your coach and the lesson process is key to a successful experience.

BW: Do you have any recommendations for how athletes can work as a team with their coach?

CB: Communication is key to any relationship. I always appreciate feedback after a lesson. Sometimes my student may have forgotten to ask an important question or may need more clarity on a drill. It’s also great to hear from a student after they play. This information is valuable because it allows me to better understand the effectiveness of our last lesson and if I need to adjust the focus for the next lesson.

BW: What can golfers do ahead of time to prepare for lessons?

CB: It’s important that you are relaxed and focused during the lesson. If possible, turn off or silence your cell phone and leave your Apple Watch in your car so you are not distracted. For the first lesson, I recommend showing up early to get familiar with the practice area as well. I love when my students warm up with some light stretching and by hitting some short distance pitch shots. This allows me to move right into the lesson with confidence that both their coordination and balance are in tune.

BW: Anything else to add?

CB: Take time when choosing your PGA/ LPGA coach. Their ability to communicate is more important than their ability to play at a high level. They need to understand how you learn and adapt their style so you can get the most out of your lessons.

Playing lessons allow you to fine tune your alignment.
Use private lessons to improve your bunker technique from the sand.

Keeping Consistent

DISCOVER

HOW

SETTING GOALS AND STAYING DISCIPLINED CAN HELP YOU FORM HEALTHY HABITS.

While everyone clamors to spell out their resolutions before the start of a new year, the likelihood of achieving those goals relies heavily on their habits.

“Habits are just essential to success—in general and then also to our health,” says Bianca Gillett, director of recreation at Newport Beach Country Club. “… When you build that consistent habit, it increases your quality of life and promotes longevity.”

According to Gillett, there are five pillars around which you can structure your habits: fitness, nutrition, sleep, stress

management and metric of success. Some are pretty simple. For example, fitness habits should center around your workout goals, whether it be a routine heavy in cardio, weight training or some other activity. As for nutrition, habits can include everything from cutting out processed foods to logging your meals or macros. And when it comes to sleep, you want to make sure you’re getting around seven or eight hours a night.

The final two pillars are a little more complex. But stress management is pivotal to keep cortisol levels down as well as for your mental health. There are many different ways you can regulate this, from stretching for muscle recovery and soft tissue work to journaling, meditation, therapy or even relaxing walks in nature. You’ll also want to find some sort of measurement to use to track your success, and build a habit around that. Tied to physique specifically, some may choose to examine weight or body fat percentage over time, but that isn’t the only option. “Other metrics of success can be creating an accountability system and log or track how many times you work out each week. … Having that visual representation of your success and focusing on the right habits allows people to destress from the scale attachment.”

Gillett notes that two of the most important factors when trying to build habits are consistency and discipline—after all, she says, “fitness isn’t something that happens in a day.” But in order to remain dedicated to the task at hand, it’s pivotal to determine the ‘why’ behind your goals; you should have a clear reason behind the habits you’re trying to create. And once you’ve set out to do what you wanted to, she says you have to ask yourself what’s next.

“There’s nothing saying that [your ‘why’] can’t change, it just needs to be clear year after year and that will lead to great success,” Gillett explains.

There are other steps you can take to help build healthy habits, aside from pinpointing your ‘why.’ “You can’t change bad habits into new ones without structure. It’s too hard,” Gillett says. “Your neurons will literally fuse together when creating habits and what happens is you can create tight neuron bondings for bad habits. So your brain is naturally going to go toward those bad habits.”

She says you can combat that by creating a game plan that will ensure success, having an accountability buddy or even

getting professional help, such as a personal trainer, to keep you on track. “Stick to your habit; stick to your routine,” Gillett adds. “A lot of people can research how to do a workout program. They can look at that and be so good and disciplined on their own, and then there are people who can’t, which is totally fine. Just recognize which personality you are and take the right steps.”

While there are conflicting reports on how long it takes until an action becomes a habit—ranging anywhere from 30 to 90 days—it’s going to be different for everyone, and that is part of the reason that consistency is so important. “Don’t worry about how long it takes, just worry about the task that you have in front of you,” Gillett says. “You know you’re at the end point of [building] the habit when it has become a passion. … But it’s not like you just have to work hard until you get there and then you’re done. This is now your lifestyle, and you want to keep this because, when it’s a lifestyle, you like how you feel, you like how you look, you like how your mental state is. You want to hang on to it.”

Triggers and obstacles will present themselves multiple times a day, but Gillett says you just need to remain focused on your goals. “Any time that you feel that impulse to break away from your habit, just take a second, think and then make a wise decision based on your ‘why.’ Trying to be perfect adds more stress than anything else.” She says this can lead to burnout and, if you remain consistent, disciplined and accurate, you will feel happier and healthier all around.

In a world filled with instant gratification, the fulfillment that comes from setting goals, changing your habits and achieving success is unparalleled and will ensure that you slip into a lifestyle you’re proud of.

Hello Members!

Spring is almost here! The days are getting longer, and we all find ourselves with a little extra sunshine to spare. If you’re searching for ways to spend your daylight windfall, you’ve come to the right place.

The Hoag Classic returns to Newport Beach Country Club from March 2-6, attracting a field of professional players that rivals any major championship in golf. Known as the most philanthropic tournament on the PGA TOUR Championship, this event is highly regarded for its profound level of giving. Each year, the tournament raises funds for Hoag as well as other local charities, totaling more than $20 million in its history. And with the annual Military Appreciation Day, the Hoag Classic helps raise money for military organizations, which have included The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, the Blue Angels Foundation and more.

Additionally, the Hoag Classic fills local hotel rooms, restaurants and businesses throughout tournament week, providing an enormous influx of dollars into our economy. An independent study determined the economic impact of the tournament on Newport Beach and the surrounding communities of Orange County to be almost $30 million. We look forward to seeing you at the Hoag Classic as you help support our community.

Kids, how low can you go? Cotillion is back on March 8. Costume attire, etiquette review and the limbo are all part of this fun evening. And parents, we haven’t forgotten about you: Get ready to brush up on your romance. Date Night will take place March 11. Reservations are available online.

The luck of the Irish returns to NBCC on March 17. Join us for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the Seahorse Grille, complete with Irish fare, live music and, of course, green beer. Here are a few of my favorite Irish proverbs to raise your glass to this St. Patrick’s Day:

May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.

Lords and ladies, choose your knight and cheer him on to victory! Our Medieval Knights event returns to our castle by the sea on March 20. You’ve heard the tales, now see it with your own eyes—a medieval tournament to delight every duke, lady, lass and lad. Go now thy wey, and speed thee heer-aboute.

And finally, we end the month with Movie Night on March 25.

Don’t forget that time springs forward one hour on March 13 as well. One more hour of sunshine? Yes please!

Staying Positive

NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB MEMBER MICHAEL VALPREDO SHARES HIS GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT, THE QUALITIES HE LIKES MOST IN A WOMAN AND THE MOTTO BY WHICH HE LIVES HIS LIFE.

Every so often, the editors of Bay Window send out a questionnaire to one of the esteemed members or employees of an International Bay Clubs property to gain some insight into his or her life. These nine questions allow our readers to learn something new about old friends, or discover somebody they have not met before. For this issue, we’re getting to know Newport Beach Country Club member Michael Valpredo.

BAY WINDOW: What is your current state of mind?

MICHAEL VALPREDO: I’m a very positive person. I feel very blessed and try to always keep things in a good frame of mind. Even during this crazy time I find myself balanced with the power of positive thinking.

BW: Which living person do you most admire?

MV: Definitely my dad. He took big risks to build the foundation of our family business, all the while making sure his children and family came first. His integrity and humility are attributes I think about daily and try to live up to.

BW: What is the quality you most like in a woman?

MV: All the ones my wife has—beauty, honesty, loving[ness], intelligence and fun! Most importantly, being the best mom a child could ask for.

BW: Which talent would you most like to have?

MV: The ability to fall asleep on command—an internal on/off switch would be terrific. I’m also wishing I had a talent for golf. The struggle is real!

BW: What is your greatest regret?

MV: No regrets, just try and do it better next time.

BW: What do you consider your greatest achievement?

MV: I’m very proud of my family. Our children are at the best age. Michelle deservedly gets most of the credit, but I’m very proud of “us.”

BW: What do you most dislike about your appearance?

MV: My kids will say my forehead. So, I’ll go with them.

BW: If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

MV: Probably my dog, Lulu. She has it made! My folks spoil her and she is the total boss.

BW: What is your motto?

MV: I’m stealing this from my dad, but I believe that, in life, “if you really want to do something you’ll find a way, and if you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.”

Dear BBC Members,

I am so excited for the return of the PGA Tour Champions Hoag Classic! Judging by this year’s player field, it looks to be another memorable year for PGA Golf in Newport Beach. Alongside returning 2020 Champion Ernie Els are Jim Furyk, David Duval, KJ Choi and Mike Weir who will be making their first appearance at Newport Beach Country Club. Returning players include Bernhard Langer and Darren Clarke.

The Hoag Classic not only brings professional golf to Newport Beach, it is also one of the most philanthropic events on the PGA Tour Champions. Thanks to the hard work of Jeff Purser and his team, this event has raised more than $21 million for Hoag Hospital and other local charities.

I have such fond memories of this tournament having had the pleasure of hosting our visiting professionals and their families for many years while working at Newport Beach Country Club. I found them all to be so gracious and wonderful company, but during those years I rarely got to watch any of the action on the golf course. Over the past several years, I have really relished the opportunity to enjoy the tournament alongside our BBC Members. To see you all out enjoying the tournament, expressing your excitement over the game of golf, and supporting our community is heartwarming.

I look forward to seeing our members at this year’s tournament and at all the great events we have in store for you at the club.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you at your home away from home.

Welcome Spring At The Club

MEMBERS CELEBRATE “MARCH MADNESS” WITH GUSTO!

March is a month of new beginnings. From the beginning of spring to daylight savings, it’s a month bursting with change as Mother Nature begins to bloom and show colors after a season of chilliness. As we enter a new season, it’s the perfect time to celebrate every single occasion, since there are so many! No matter how big, small, silly, or serious the day is, there is something to celebrate for everybody, from St. Patrick’s Day celebrations to a whole day dedicated to Barbie, the 94th Academy Awards, International Women’s Day, Fat Tuesday and March Madness.

Sports fans around the country look forward to March Madness, as the annual tournament has become one of the biggest annual sporting events in the US. March Madness began in 1939 with only eight teams and now features 68 college basketball teams from the Division I level of the NCAA that play to determine the national championship. Even among non-sports fans, it is extremely common to predict the outcomes of each game, with tens of millions of Americans participating in a bracket pool contest every year. Did you know that our very own UCLA has the most NCAA men’s basketball national championships with 11, including a stretch of 7 titles in a row between 1967 and 1973?

Come celebrate March Madness and cheer on your favorite college basketball teams as you dine in Members Grill or at the pool bar. Great food specials are available throughout the day, including happy hour during all the games! And don’t forget to visit the “best kept secret in Newport Beach,” the BBC’s full size basketball court, which is available by reservation or on a first come first served basis. It can also be set up as a full-size volleyball court or pickle ball court. Make your reservations today by calling Ashley Pitcock, Director of Recreation at 949-630-4420!

While the season begins to change and move into spring, come enjoy these wonderful March events with your family, friends, and fellow BBC members. We look forward to seeing you at the Club to celebrate the many occasions this month provides for us!

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”

Dear Guests, Members and Visitors,

As we move toward the springtime we are focused on sustainability. Last summer, we introduced our Path water bottles and refill stations throughout the resort. As a result, we have eliminated over 4,500 plastic water bottles. This year, we are proud to be partnering with Clean the World. Their focus is to collect and recycle soap and amenities discarded by the hospitality industry. Through the distribution of these and other donated hygiene products to impoverished people, they help prevent millions of hygiene-related illnesses and deaths every year. Used soap is collected by housekeeping and shipped to Clean the World where it is filtered, sterilized, and made into brand new 1.75 oz. bars of soap. The new soap is then distributed through multiple Clean the World programs to people in need, domestically and all over the world. One bar of soap equals one hundred hand washes.

Another focus for the resort this year is wellness. We recently launched our Wellness Your Way package which includes discounted rooms, recreation rentals, and spa retail, as well transportation to hiking locations and healthy snacks from Blend. We also recently added a new Peloton Bike and a MIRROR interactive gym to the fitness studio. For outdoor options, we are adding boot camp classes on the lawn as well as electric bikes which will be available through our Recreation Concierge. Whether you are looking to join an online class, or work out on your own, we have you covered!

We look forward to seeing you around the resort,

PART II IN THE BAY WINDOW FEATURE ON EQUESTRIAN LIFE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Along with the mental health benefits which were discussed in last month’s issue, we continue on with the physical benefits horseback riding provides.

This sport is a form of exercise for your body, not only burning calories through regular movement, but isometric exercise by using your muscles to stabilize yourself on the horse. There is not a muscle horseback riding does not strengthen. Outside of core muscles, riding energizes your chest, arms and legs. These work together to keep you from falling from your mount.

Practicing coordination is enhanced as your horse is directed to go in different directions. For more advanced riders, balance and coordination are crucial skills that continue to strengthen you while learning how to navigate barrels, fences or other obstacles.

Problem solving skills are needed in order to communicate with your horse and

overcome anything in your path. The two factors of time management and exercising large motor skills are improved through the equestrian’s care processes including grooming and tacking.

Like many forms of exercise, horseback riding improves circulation. The rhythm of your body movement while riding stretches many of your muscles. This improves flexibility and your range of motion.

Many regular riders describe the experience of taking time from their busy schedules to ride their horse as the most relaxing part of their day. Being outdoors and enjoying the sights and sounds of country life and smelling the foliage…HEAVEN. Equestrian life can’t be beat!

In this part two of a series on equestrian life in Bay Window, please read on about riders and their horses of the DK Ranch, a place to behold.

Dena Teller with “Roy”

I was on a pony by the age of five, but it was on the 9th fairway of a junior golf clinic where my passion for horses ignited into action. After finishing golf, I ran next door to discover my happy place: Potter Stables, where I signed up for riding lessons every summer thereafter in Michigan where I grew up. Owning a horse taught me discipline and dedication and helped me make sense of life. Eventually, guiding others on trails turned into a lifetime love for horses and the gifts they bestow. Prior to college, I traded horses for a ‘66 Ford Mustang and drove off to pursue a degree studying prelaw and Renaissance Literature, followed with post grad work at Oxford University. I

began writing quite a life story.

The allure of California and its beaches became a foregone conclusion after graduation. I eventually settled in the interior design space after picking up a second degree. Marriage and family became the next steps of life, and then, like so many others, my interest in equine-assisted psychotherapy stemmed from life’s struggles. Up close and personal impact was felt when a family member’s severe illness posed extreme challenges. I turned to my retired thoroughbred Merlin for comfort and while seeking refuge on the sofa, saw a documentary, “Saratoga Warhorse,” a powerful story about thoroughbreds being rescued and repurposed for equine therapy by a

former Vietnam veteran. Consequently, I took action at Rise Canyon Ranch to complete my Eagala certification as an Equine Specialist.

I continued on a “RCR” and worked with at-risk children, and I am pursuing further certification to work with our veterans. “Horses heal because they are highly sensitive, clients can work through their struggles without judgement or interpretation.” They mirror us when comfort is needed, they know what to do!

With Merlin being retired, I started a search for a “dead broke horse,” (meaning well-trained) which my family heard on a daily basis until found! Cromed With Class AKA Roy named after Roy Clark, entered

my life. A beautiful former Reiner and liver chestnut Quarter Horse with “size!” Roy was bred in Texas out of Custom Crome and Sassys Classy Chic. Dave Worley, an expert reining trainer, initially introduced Roy to me, but Roy was different the second time around. He was stressed and higher strung than the first meeting and it became clear I needed a trainer that understood his language and Western discipline. After almost losing him to another buyer, Roy was mine. Out of English riding and into the Western world I dove. Pushed by a friend and now fellow barn mate, all I heard was, “you need Kayla Buechner McQuaig.” I finally conceded and moved to DK Ranch where KB Performance Horses are trained by Kayla.

“There’s a familiar smell, comfort and grounding essence of a horse stable.” I knew it when I walked through that gate, I was home again. The ranch, the girls, the trainer and Devon Martin are all components of a dream ranch. This time around, Roy and I have healed together with the help of Kayla. I will start showing this year!

Nancy Cisternelli with “Jak”

My name is Nancy Cisternelli and I own a horse at DK Ranch, his name is Jak. His registered name is Op off my Jak. I have been riding since I was a kid, but I had no formal lessons until I started taking lessons with Kayla about three years ago. After about 8 months taking lessons on her lesson horses, my husband says, “Well what are you going to do now, just keep taking lessons? Why don’t you buy your own horse?” Really? Well, you would have to know my husband, but he is great at telling you to go for it! So, I did! Kayla Buechner McQuaig helped me find Jak and we brought him to the barn almost 3 years ago on Mother’s Day. So basically, I had no real training

before I started with Kayla. I had ridden on vacations at a dude ranch quite a bit and that was it. I never thought I would own a horse and getting a horse at age 60, well, why not?

My discipline is Western. Jak was trained as a Reiner, but Kayla is training him to do Trail and Western Pleasure. Right now, I ride for leisure, I am still learning. Jak was only 3 when I got him so he was just a kid and he still knew more than me! Hopefully this year, I can try one of the beginner shows with him Jak will be 6 years old this year, he is a Palomino and has the best personality. DK Ranch has been a haven for me during this COVID pandemic. It has been a safe place to come and get some quality horse therapy, I love it!

Susan Burnside and Sir

My name is Susan Burnside. My extraordinary horse’s name is Sir. He is, besides my family, the love of my life. I owned a horse in junior high and high school, and 40 years later I was blessed to own another one. This time was even more special because my

sister is also here with me as she owns Jak, and what a piece of heaven that is to have her here too. It’s a place where everyone is welcome. My husband comes to watch and has been known to also ride Sir, along with my kid, my sisters and brother also. My sister’s husband and kids enjoy the horse and bring the dogs too.

Sir is a Registered Quarter Horse, and his specialty is Reining (seen recently on “Yellowstone” if you have seen it). He does spins and stops and is quite talented indeed. His registered name is Jewels Mr. Reminic. I do show competitively but have only a few shows under my belt. So far, I have shown in Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Pleasure and Ranch Riding. Sir, my husband and I love to go camping with the horses; we have traveled to quite a few places. Laurie, Skye, Nancy (my sister) and Jak have enjoyed trips together. The horses, too, need a vacation sometimes. Even though they are on vacation at the DK Ranch 24/7.

Although every person at the barn has a different reason why they LOVE DK Ranch, for me it’s a peaceful place where I can

destress from the world and my job (I am a CV Tech and work at a hospital assisting the physician for stent and angioplasty procedures on heart attack patients). I love being with my horse and everything that goes with it. I have about 6 months left before I retire and I’m looking forward to spending the majority of my retirement with my horse! It is a job for all ages, young and old, and I might be in the best shape ever now at 65, more than at any time of my life. Therapy, exercise, you name it, it’s all great. The best part is the unconditional love to give and be given back in a way that can’t be described or even understood except by perhaps another equestrian. When you have that passion for horses, it is with you for life, and what a very precious gift to be given and enjoy forever.

Kristin Titov and “Pickles”

I’ve been riding since I was 2 years old. I compete in Reining events around the country. I’m a 2-time NRHA Top 20 Non Professional. My NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) lifetime earnings are over $120K. I’ve had my current horse Gunsup in Tinseltown (aka Pickles) since 2017 and we’ve made the finals at every major event, winning over $50K together. However, he’s had a series of injuries that won’t allow him to continue with his Reining career. So, he is now retired from Reining, and I brought him from my trainer in Arizona to live closer to my home in Newport Beach so he can learn a new event that will be less demanding on him physically. He is such a special horse that has given me so much, I feel like I owe it to him to find him a new career that he can enjoy. I own Hobby Horse Clothing Company (www.hobbyhorseinc.com). At Hobby Horse we empower women to look and feel their best in the show arena and beyond. I absolutely love fashion and showing hoses—so with this business I have the opportunity to combine my passions. Pickles is a AQHA & APHA Palomino gelding. He has tons of personality and is an expert model. He has been in dozens of photoshoots and love the camera.

Ellen Best with “Ollie” and “You’re All Talk”

I’m Ellen Best, me and my horse Ollie are at the DK Ranch, and members of KB Performance Horses.

DK Ranch has provided an amazing home. I’ve only been a family member for 3 years, and my horse that I bought less than 3 years ago has had some issues.

Unequivocally Devon Martin has been one of the greatest supporters and educators for me.

English is my favorite; my horse is Western Pleasure and Trail. And we’ve just gleaned Western High Point at our recent show. I ride for pleasure and show for pleasure. I never thought I’d show, but Kayla Buechner McQuaig is an amazing trainer. I’ll show as much as I can afford this next year.

I’m now 56 years old. I moved from New Jersey 22 years ago. I had limited horse lessons after my first husband died. Lloyd was my first horse in New Jersey. I did not bring him from Jersey to Southern California, I despised the OC Fairgrounds and walked away from equestrian. My second husband died 4 years ago. At that time, my 21-yearold son wanted to make sure I was okay. He found and brought me to the DK Ranch and Kayla with KBPH. I bought my Ollie

within 2 months of my time with Devon and Kayla. My Ollie is 20 years old, and he is my champion! Within 3 months of use, he was lame. He saved me and I saved him. I’ve saved Ollie from being tossed into the trash, and he has saved my life. And lo and behold, we’ve gleaned Championship show status.

I also own You’re All Talk, born on June 1, 2001. He’s a 16.1 Chestnut Gelding. He is a champion showmanship horse and his best mommy before me was a 22-year-old gal who was accepted into equine vet school in Tennessee.

Present day, Ollie is the old guy in our barn. Ollie is a champion in showmanship and many other kudos, and he and I gleaned Western Pleasure High Point Champion and Reserve Champion in English Equitation at Highland Riders 2021.

The DK Ranch is the Ritz of facilities. There is no barn that houses and cares for our ponies better.

Megan Sullivan with “Faith” and her daughter Peyton with “Raven”

Growing up, I’d always loved horses. Riding was something I longed to pursue but never had the opportunity until November of 2017 when my now husband, Grey, put me on a horse on our ranch in Idaho. My passion exploded and there

months later, we were living on a horse property and owned four horses! During that time, I met Devon Martin and she shared with me about her amazing barn and KB Performance Horses. In May of 2020, a stall became available, and we moved our young green Friesian, Faith, to the barn. Under the talented instruction of KBPH’s trainer, Kayla Buechner McQuaig, Faith continues to grow into an amazing and beautiful mare. In 2021, after about a year of lessons, Kayla and I decided it was time to take our riding to the next level and start showing. Faith wasn’t yet ready, so we set out on the venture to find a Western Pleasure horse. In May, we stumbled upon Raven (Lookoutimredhott) an 8-year-old bay Quarter Horse mare, in the back pasture of a training barn in the small town of Hockley, Texas. It was love at first sight and a week later, Raven arrived in Newport Beach. Her beauty is second only to her demeanor and talent in and out of the show arena. One of Raven’s most esteemed accolades is having placed 6th at Congress in Western Pleasure. My 11-year-old daughter, Peyton, proudly wears her first belt buckle from earning over 10 Circuit Champion awards with Raven this past year. While we participate in local shows this spring, we eagerly anticipate our first out of state show

in Arizona in May. Whether we are riding our trail horses on our ranch in Montana or working on the intricacies of Western Pleasure riding, Peyton and I love every aspect of equestrian life and feel so blessed to have found KB Performance Horses!

Cindy Massaro and “Oliver Money”

I loved horses as a young girl, but never had the opportunity to own, lease or regularly ride. As an adult, I would occasionally rent horses for trail rides. However, when my two daughters became serious in the sport of Equestrian Vaulting, our family made the decision to purchase a horse of our own. Oliver Money is a 14-year-old Trakehner-Canadian Warmblood. He began training and competing in Dressage before adding Vaulting into his repertoire at age 11. He continues to cross-train in Dressage along with his Vaulting training. Oliver competes at a high level with my daughters in the U.S. Equestrian Federation and International Federation for Equestrian Sports and was just ranked #4 in the U.S. for the 2021 Equestrian Vaulting Horse of the Year. Even though Oliver competes at such a high level, I ride him for pleasure. I began learning how to ride him in Dressage about a year ago. It’s been a joy to fulfill my dream of having my own horse.

Thank you to all DK Ranch riders for making this article possible.

Ann, our photographer, had never shot an article quite like this one and enjoyed all of it too. Her pictures really make this article. Thank you, Ann.

RECIPES

ULTRA-REFRESHING BEER SLUSHY

Slushy-like super chilled beer has long been popular in Thailand. When you freeze the beer to 25 degrees and insert a straw or pour the beer into a glass, its equilibrium is disrupted, causing tiny ice crystals to form instantly while the alcohol stays fluid. The result: a beer slushy. Gather up your golf guests and pass the slushies.

A dry lager slushes up when it’s around 18 to 25 degrees. IPAs and stouts need to get a few degrees colder.

A 12-ounce bottle should take about 40 minutes to freeze.

Bottles will shatter if the beer accidentally freezes completely. If you’re concerned about this possibility, use cans instead.

LOBSTER TACOS

Poach whole lobsters in a court bouillon. Then place in a bowl of ice water. Dice cooked lobster. Make a lemon aioli and mix a tablespoon or two into the lobster. Make or purchase a fresh mango salsa.

Place a schmear of guacamole on a plate. Stand up 3 mini crisp taco shells.

Fill with lobster and top with mango salsa. Scrumptious!

TIRAMISU BONBONS

1 tray store-bought Tiramisu 1/2 pound dark chocolate, cut into small pieces, or bittersweet chocolate chips

Using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, spoon out balls from of a tray of tiramisu to create bonbons. Freeze the bonbons on a cookie sheet for at least 1 hour or overnight.

Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler until smooth and glossy. Dip frozen tiramisu bonbons in melted chocolate until covered on all sides. Place them back on the cookie sheet and return them to the freezer. Let thaw for about 15 minutes before serving. Makes 12 bonbons.

MODERN OLD FASHIONED COCKTAIL

Who wants a drink? Let’s relax with one of the oldest cocktails around: an Old Fashioned. This twist on the classic recipe uses maple syrup instead of simple syrup which complements bourbon’s caramel notes and tastes wonderful. You cannot go wrong with classic Angostura bitters,

and I prefer a large ice cube because they melt more slowly, and no classic Old Fashioned is complete without a twist of citrus (my preference is orange to lemon).

A Luxardo Cherry is the perfect garnish.

2 ounces bourbon

1 teaspoon maple syrup

2 dashes Angostura bitters

1 Large Ice Cube

A hefty strip of orange peel and a Luxardo cherry, for garnish

Muddle in the bottom of an old fashioned glass the maple syrup and bitters with the orange peel first. Then add the large ice cube and pour the bourbon over the ice cube, stir for 20 seconds, add the Luxardo cherry and enjoy.

How to multiply: You can make a batch of Modern Old Fashioned Cocktails. Place a handful or two of ice cubes in a pitcher and multiply the base ingredients (bourbon, maple syrup, Angostura bitters) as necessary and stir them together. Pour into glasses with fresh ice.

Lana’s Tip: If you have a pellet, electric or gas smoker, make a maple simple syrup, then put it in the smoker for a short while. Here’s to a safe and old-fashioned Happy Hour!

AN L.A. HARBOR TOUR

VIEWING THE BIG SHIPS UP CLOSE

If you look out at the ocean from the “best of all possible coasts” toward the oil drilling platforms off Huntington Beach you will see so many huge cargo ships sitting at anchor that it boggles the mind. It takes many days for some of them to be allowed into either L.A. or Long Beach Harbor.

So, my wife and I thought it might be interesting to head up to San Pedro and take a harbor tour and see these behemoths up-close and personal rather than from several miles away. We called ahead and found out they have 45-minute excursions pretty much all day. It’s been a long time since we’ve been to San Pedro, and we’ve never visited

the famous Point Fermin Lighthouse that is located in a park at the end of Gaffey Street some four miles from the 110 Freeway. I really love lighthouses, and this is really a great one, and so close to home. It is open for guided tours Tuesday through Sunday at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 PM. Call ahead for reservations at 310-241-0684.

So, from the old lighthouse which was built by the Federal Government in 1874 to light the entrance of L.A. Harbor, it was only a couple of miles back down Gaffey to the tour office along with the San Pedro Fish Market and restaurant. The next boat left in about a half hour, so we ordered a fish and chips plate and dined outside watching the ships go by.

Wow, this was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had.

The boat arrived and we were off to see the Port of Los Angeles which is called “America’s Port” and occupies 7,500 acres of land and water with 43 miles of waterfront and adjoins the separate Port of Long Beach. The L.A. Port alone supports employment for 529,000 people. Some 83 huge cranes unload 20% of all cargo coming into the U.S. It is ranked the #1 container port in the Western Hemisphere and the adjoining Port of Long Beach is ranked second. Experiencing unprecedented delays at both ports at the writing of this story, Business Insider said, “159 vessels were in port and outside at anchor with countless trucks

STORY

lined up waiting.”

The harbor tour was great fun as we passed the old federal prison on Terminal Island on the way to the harbor entrance. Opened in 1938, it is fully operational, housing over 900 low-level federal prisoners. Looks like the warden lives pretty good as some of the houses on the island look like southern mansions. On the way back we slowly passed some of the huge cargo ships that were being unloaded. Some of these really big ones can hold 12,500 containers and are as tall as the Empire State Building. Holland America’s Zuiderdam towered over the WWII Iowa as we approached the dock.

Old San Pedro is getting a good facelift in the new modern age, looking out at this world-class commercial harbor.

As always, podonnell@fullerton.edu

NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE, INC. PRESENTS TWO CLASSES OF DEBUTANTES IN CLASSIC TRADITION

Since 1961, the Newport Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. has celebrated its graduates with a debutante ball on the Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday. Our Newport Chapter was the 2nd NCL Chapter to hold a Debutante Ball, and it was held on November 25th, 1961 where 12 debutantes were honored.

For the Class of 2020, the COVID pandemic delayed their celebration. Through perseverance and the dedication of the Deb Ball Chair Cindy Valdes and her committee, the debutantes were finally recognized on Friday, November 26, 2021. The Class of 2020 Debutante Ball marked the Newport Chapter’s 60th Annual National Charity League Ball.

The U.S. Government Is In The Financial Risk Management Business

THE TREASURY WOULD BENEFIT FROM HIGHER INFLATION

You’ve probably had your fill of inflation news. How long will it last? How high will it be? Will it cause an economic recession? One thing you likely haven’t heard much about is that the U.S. Department of the Treasury led by Janet Yellen wouldn’t mind higher inflation for longer. This seems to fly directly in the face of the main talking points shared on the nightly news from various government officials. Not too long ago the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell repeatedly testified to Congress that the inflation pressures were “transitory.” Instead, we’re still experiencing persistently higher prices for goods and services across all industries. However, this is a good thing for the U.S. government.

In September 2021, Treasury Secretary Yellen testified that the U.S. government has never defaulted on its debt, and that such an occurrence would be “a catastrophe” resulting in higher borrowing costs for everyone and “a financial crisis, certainly a recession.” This may be a reasonable assessment, given the current scale of U.S. Public Debt, which is at alltime highs of more than $28 Trillion (or equivalent to 122% of U.S. GDP – higher than most all developed nations). If the U.S. government did not make good on its sovereign debt, be it missing an interest payment or repaying below par value principal, then that would be considered a default event. Yet,

there are other ways the government could actively mitigate its debt payoff amount without a technical default. These include higher inflation or currency devaluation.

To say that the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt would be incorrect, in essence. In 1934, the Treasury defaulted on one of its Liberty Bonds, though not in a way that was entirely obvious. It paid back bondholders only 59% of the principal due. How did this happen? The Gold Reserve Act, passed by Congress in 1934, reduced the amount of gold that backed each dollar. Bondholders were “paid back” in newly devalued U.S. dollars. Today, we may not have gold-backed financial engineering available, but there is another tool available to assist government in reducing its debt payoff – inflation.

Higher inflation provides all debt issuers a unique opportunity to payback creditors with future inflated dollars. For example, a $100 par value 10-Year bond issued in 2020 with an assumed average annualized inflation rate of 3.5% experienced through 2030. The result is a real inflation-adjusted 59% of par value repayment (or, $59 out of $100). The reduction in repayment similarity to 1934 is likely just coincidence, given these assumptions, but eerie, nonetheless.

Governments try to actively manage risk to their economies (such as debt levels) on a forward-looking basis. Sometimes, good risk management means supporting policymaking that isn’t a good deal for its citizens in the near-term. In the bond issue example above, bondholders would be particularly vulnerable on a forward-looking basis – especially those who are dependent upon fixed income cash flows to fund expenses (like retirees). Just as the government employs its own risk management, investors must be vigilant and more active in managing their risk exposures.

Too many investors believe when they buy a bond, looking at the coupon rate is how to best evaluate its worthiness. That’s dangerous, especially in a rising rate environment. The better return metric to reference is yield, which takes annual coupon payments and divides it by the bond’s purchase price. All too often I see folks reference coupon rates of 4-5% as their annual returns, when they’re earning only 1-2% annualized yield over the bond’s holding period. For today’s bond buyers, the risk of negative real (inflation-adjusted) yields over the next five to ten years is high.

Beware Of The Errant Slice

GOLFERS CHECK YOUR INSURANCE

With the Hoag Classic back in town, I began thinking about golf and the law, and revisited an issue that came up a lot in my life as a young (and erratic) golfer. My grandparents were members of a country club, and I greatly enjoyed playing on the course. The problem was that when I was a teenager, I had a propensity to slice, and there were a few holes on their course where the homes created a very narrow fairway.

I often wondered what happened to the balls that landed on rooftops (luckily, I never heard the crash of a window) down the right side of the fifteenth hole of that course. As an adult (and a lawyer), I wondered about whose responsibility it was if I had accidentally damaged property at one of those homes. A deep dive into the law in California put my mind at ease, even though the statutes of limitation for claims from my teenage years have long since run.

First, because the club was located in a gated community, there was likely a waiver in place for damage from golf balls played on the course. If you purchase property subject to CC&Rs on a golf course, you are going to want to read those regulations very carefully, because they may disclaim liability for property damage from golf balls. It is

also possible that where the golf course is private, the club may have a special insurance policy available to it for just these types of scenarios. However, most golfers adhere to the unwritten rule that it is their responsibility to make sure that there was no damage, and to offer to repair any damage that did occur.

This is all well and good for property damage, but what if, like one of my friends on my high school golf team, you get hit with a golf ball?

The California Courts have, quite poetically, described it thusly, “If every ball behaved as the golfer wished, there would be little ‘sport’ in the sport of golf. That shots go awry is a risk that all golfers, even the professionals, assume when they play.” Often, it is the errant shots that lead to the most memorable recoveries. However, I digress.

The Courts have stated that by playing golf, or choosing to be at a golf course, you are assuming a risk that you might be hit with a ball, much like my teammate’s decision to stand a little too close to the ninth hole’s green, wherein he was hit in the leg. In fact, unless you can show that the person who hit the ball was acting recklessly or intentionally in their hitting you with the ball, you are not going to be able to hold them liable.

The question gets a little more into the gray area when discussing people who just happen to be walking by or through the course, but not intending to be on the golf course. For example, if you were on the trails that run through Pelican Hill. The California Courts have also been quite clear on the issue of public easements on private property. Where a private entity provides a public easement for recreational purposes such as a nature trail, the private property cannot be held liable for injuries.

Moving even more into the gray area are public courses that are bordered by public sidewalks and/or streets. Courts have resolved issues of pedestrians and cars hit by stray golf balls in a number of ways including holding golf courses liable when the city/county allows a for-profit company to run them on the municipality’s behalf, but allowing the municipality to have immunity when they run the course themselves.

At the end of the day, make sure that you try your best to hit the ball straight, call your homeowners’ insurance agent and make sure that you are covered if you hit someone with a golf ball (most policies do cover this), and get out and enjoy the course.

Looking Back At Former Classic Champions

THE STRONG BOND FORMED BETWEEN HOAG HOSPITAL, THE PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR, AND

NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB BENEFITS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

It’s spring which means Southern California weather is at its finest, primed for golf season and the annual PGA Champions Tour Hoag Classic at the Newport Beach Country Club. The club’s $50 million renovation completely upgraded the tournament experience for the golfers as well as the spectators and sponsors. It has always been a player’s favorite and now there’s a waiting list to get invited. The tournament as we know it today was originally founded in 1995 as the Toshiba Senior Classic and became the Toshiba Classic in 2006 followed by the Hoag Classic in 2019. With more than $20 million in total charitable proceeds raised throughout its history, the tournament is one of the most successful philanthropic events on the PGA TOUR Champions.

There have been an array of famous golfers coming through Newport Beach Country Club for the tournament, however none have been able to pull a hat trick and win three times. Only Fred Couples, Hale Irwin, and Jay Haas have won twice. Could this year be the year? Ernie Els won in 2020, Kirk Triplett in 2019, Vijay Singh in 2018, Jay Haas in 2016. There was no tournament in 2017.

In 2015 Duffy Waldorf took the trophy, 2014 Fred Couples, 2013 David Frost, 2012 Loren Roberts, 2011 Nick Price, 2010 Fred Couples, 2009 Eduardo Romero, 2008 Bernhard Langer, 2007 Jay Haas, 2006 Brad Bryant, 2005 Mark Johnson, 2004 Tom Purtzer, 2003 Rodger Davis, 2002 Hale Irwin, 2001 Jose Maria Canizares, 2000 Allen Doyle, 1999 Gary McCord, 1998 Hale Irwin, 1997 Bob Murphy, 1996 Jim Colbert, and George Archer took the inaugural 1995 tournament, completing the roster of champions involved with the Classic.

The Hoag Classic returns in 2022 after being canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and features a $2 million purse, an increase of $200,000 from the previous tournament, and also a record amount for

the tournament. This year’s Hoag Classic is televised domestically on the Golf Channel and internationally on PGA TOUR television partners overseas.

In addition to all the golf action, the Hoag Classic will welcome back many fan favorites including Military Appreciation Day presented by CoreLogic, and Student Day presented by Kingston Technology. New to the tournament in 2022 will be the Hoag Technology Showcase, where guests will have the opportunity to see the latest industry

leading technology used to advance patient treatment and recovery.

The Champions Tour this year will also admit juniors 17 and younger free when accompanied by a ticketed adult as part of its mission to grow interest and participation in the game of golf.

We are lucky to host this great event annually and extremely grateful to Hoag and all of the partners and volunteers that make this tournament what it is for the community and for Hoag Hospital.

Ronald Emond Soderling Passes At 87

FAMILY MAN, REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER AND PHILANTHROPIST LEAVES

AN INDELIBLE MARK ON ORANGE COUNTY LIFE

Ronald “Ron” Soderling, the son of immigrant parents from Sweden and the Netherlands, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and grew up in Los Angeles. After graduating Beverly Hills High School, Ron, a life-long patriot, served in the

Coast Guard during the Korean War with honor. Ron attended Woodbury University in Burbank and attained a post graduate certificate in real estate development and finance from UCLA. Straight out of college, Ron launched a successful printing and publishing company. From there, the entrepreneur entered the real estate investment and development business—an industry he would embrace for the rest of his life.

The gutsy young pioneer developed and sold thousands of condominiums in the most exclusive neighborhoods of Los Angeles. In the mid ‘70s Ron relocated to Newport Beach. He invested heavily in Orange County real estate and developed offices, industrial parks, and storage centers throughout Southern California. His visionary efforts helped define our local culture and aesthetic.

Ron was truly a renaissance man with a heart for philanthropy. He was an inspirational and forward-thinking leader committed to helping people and communities thrive. Since inception, he was a donor and involved with the South Coast Repertory, Orange County Performing Arts Center and Musco Center for the Arts. In concert with the arts, Ron believed that education paralleled as one of the most important ingredients for the future of mankind. In the 1990s, Ron joined Woodbury University Board of Trustees, which then led him to doing the same for his children’s alma matter, Chapman University, where he offered sage advice for over 25 years. Ron created his own foundation which provides college scholarships to financially

disadvantaged students.

Ron met his soulmate, Gail, 45 years ago. It was love at first sight. The two made their home at the Balboa Bay Club. The BBC won’t be the same without friendly and charismatic Ron, who enjoyed meeting people and sharing concepts. He was a curious man with many interests and always eager to learn. Skiing, golf, tennis, and boating were hobbies through the years. He was obsessed with vitamins, herbs, lotions and potions, and worked out daily. He believed in self-care; in keeping the body and mind running like a finetuned machine.

In 2015, Ron was knighted in the Order of St. John, one of the oldest orders of chivalry still in existence whose mission is to serve the sick and the poor. He was a wise man with a big heart who took action and got the job done. Much of that passion came from a lifetime of travels to exotic lands far away such as Africa, Egypt, Israel, China, and Thailand. He enjoyed their getaway homes in Aspen, CO and La Quinta, CA. Most of all, he loved being with Gail in Newport Beach taking in a rich sunset painted above the ocean.

Ron was a warrior who fought hard over this past year. Passing at 87, he was blessed with a beautiful Christmas surrounded by family. He was called home to be with the Lord three days later, and no doubt he’s loving his new heavenly body. He is survived by his wife Gail of 32 years, along with 5 children and 5 grandchildren. Ron was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to many. Ron will forever be in our hearts.
