Dear Friends,

As June 2023 dawns, we enter the 75th Anniversary Summer Season at the beach. From the founding days in 1948 through present day, summer on the sand and in the bay is the centerpiece of Newport Beach life. We rejoice in its wonder. The background music of summer delivered the Beach Boys singing “Help Me Rhonda” while a BBQ produced Power Burgers and salty fries, served in gingham-patterned paper troughs, calling for a lineup of polka dot bikini-clad hungry coeds. Colorful towels lined the bleached-white imported sandy beach infused with the intoxicating aroma of the warm sun bouncing off sea water and mixing with the Coppertone covered kids diving off the dock. This was the stuff of summer memories at Balboa Bay Club.

Across Coast Highway the golf club once known as Irvine Coast Country Club, and now the Newport Beach Country Club was the center of summer golf and social life in the early decades. Mom and the kids might spend a warm Saturday afternoon on the Bay Club beach while Dad played 18 holes with his regular pals. Then it was time for cocktails and dinner at the Country Club dining room. The kids would enjoy a Swanson’s TV dinner at home with “Susie” the babysitter from Newport Harbor High School. Those were the “Ozzie and Harriet” years, long gone. Talk about romanticized memories. Time does that. Never mind that little Bobby and Cathy got the stomach flu and mom and dad had to rush home from dinner. Oh well, sometimes memory is selective, and that’s a blessing.

So much has changed over 75 years, yet so much remains the same. The BBC beach still boasts pristine white sand, the Country Club course is greener and more beautiful than ever, Power Burgers still come in paper troughs and fries still smell like a guilty addiction. Swim team draws all the kids, golf lessons too. Junior Guards is a rite of summer passage. Cotillion still preps the juniors in the art of civility…and a bit of dancing lessons as well.

Basically, life is pretty swell. Yes, the world is very different, but people are still people. Families still matter, and the good times are passed from generation to generation. Let’s make memories together during the 75th summer. Cherish the old traditions and welcome the new.

We’re all about celebrating the good life every month on these pages of the Bay Window for the past 75 years.

Summer greetings. Enjoy the read.

Respectfully,

THE 8TH ANNUAL ARTS AND BUSINESS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL SET TO GATHER IN JUNE IN SUPPORT OF SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS PROGRAMS

The Tony Award-winning hit musical SIX is coming to Segerstrom Center for the Arts from June 13–25! On June 22, experience this supercharged Broadway sensation and a dazzling Post Show Celebration at the 8th Annual Arts & Business Leadership Council Fundraiser! This fundraiser will feature themed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at a Post Show Celebration at Water Grill, generously sponsored by South Coast Plaza.

Segerstrom Center’s Arts & Business Leadership Council (ABLC) is a

membership-based group of Orange County professionals and community advocates who recognize that the arts enhance a community in many meaningful and lasting ways. Each ABLC member is a dynamic leader who supports the Center’s nonprofit mission through fundraising, advocacy and community outreach with a particular emphasis on expanding audiences and developing the next generation of arts supporters in Orange County.

The ABLC annual fundraiser attracts over 150 Orange County professionals and this year, has raised over $100,000 for the Center’s Disney Musicals in School (DMIS) program.

RODEO SEASON SUMMER 2023 KICKS OFF JULY 14TH AT CALIFORNIA RODEO SALINAS WITH LITTLE BIG TOWN

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) is the world's largest rodeo organization, organizing events in the US, Canada and Mexico. Cowboys compete in nine disciplines, including bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, bull riding, steer roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping and the All-Around, which is an award given to the highest money earner in two or more events. Each PRCA event pays out anywhere from half a million dollars to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) purse in Las Vegas, which is currently $14.9 million. This means that top cowboys can earn over a million dollars a year in prize money, in addition to annual sponsorship dollars.

The California Rodeo Salinas is the largest and most popular rodeo in California today, and one of the top PRCA rodeos. It is televised on The Cowboy Channel and live streamed on The Cowboy Channel Plus App. With a history spanning over a century, the California Rodeo, pronounced "roDAYo," began as the Wild West Show in 1911, held for a week at the Sherwood Racetrack grounds, eventually becoming known as the California Rodeo.

In the 1920s, the rodeo had a permanent home at Sherwood Park, with a new grandstand and facilities built in 1924. In the 1930s, Hollywood stars visited the rodeo, and professional cowboys established the Cowboy’s Turtle Association to improve prize money and rodeo standards. In the 1940s, new events were introduced, including wild cow milking, wild horse races and trick riders, following the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II. The 1950s marked the first National Finals Rodeo and the addition of Alaska and Hawaii to statehood, while the 1960s saw the debut of Cowgirl Barrel Racing and the first Pageant of Flags. In the 1970s, the popular Wrangler Bull Fights were added, and the PRCA took over from the RCA in promoting the sport of Pro Rodeo. In the 1990s, the California Rodeo underwent a complete makeover, including the construction of new grandstands and the

addition of a Long Branch Saloon on the south end of the arena. In the 2000s, the popularity of Professional Rodeo continued to grow, and the California Rodeo was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. The addition of a replay screen brought the action closer to the crowd, and the Bull Crossing tent was born, offering live music, a full bar and a mechanical bull for after-rodeo entertainment. The 2010 Centennial Celebration was a spectacle full of pageantry, featuring a giant boot and a horse and rider emerging from the top presenting the American Flag during the Grand Entry. In 2010, the Hall

of Fame Inductions were introduced, and a wall was erected in 2014 to honor those inducted. Today, almost 200 sponsors support the California Rodeo Salinas and other events like the Kickoff Concert, which has featured artists such as Blake Shelton, Kid Rock, Aerosmith, Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw. This year's Kickoff Concert will showcase Little Big Town and will take place on July 14th with the rodeo July 20-23rd.

THE AMERICAN FLAG IS MORE THAN DECORATION

June brings with it Flag Day, an oft overlooked holiday that celebrates the date on which the Continental Congress passed a resolution adopting a flag for our almost one-year-old nation that had declared its independence 11 months earlier. Growing up, I was constantly reminded of the holiday as my grandmother’s birthday happened to also be June 14. But I thought of it again recently as I was traveling in Europe.

An old friend is getting married and decided that his bachelor party would be his group of friends traveling to see Bruce Springsteen in concert. Somehow (even now, as we have all gone and returned home, and the wedding has passed), I am still not sure of how Dublin, Ireland was selected, but there we were, in the middle of a rugby stadium, 11 Americans, singing along to some of The Boss’ greatest hits.

Now, it is not lost on me that Born in the USA is not a patriotic anthem by any stretch of the imagination, but it was during this song that I looked out over the rugby stadium that now hosted a filled-to-capacity 18,500 people

singing along and noticed the flags.

I think that we often take patriotism for granted here – our nation that is very politically splintered forgets how much we have that should pull us together instead of pushing us apart. And whether it is the flags at Castaways Park on Memorial Day, the flags that line the Balboa Island Bridge for most of the summer, or the flags that stream down Mariners Drive for the annual July 4 parade, the flag has become something of a decoration – a prop – for when we are meant to celebrate the country, rather than a symbol of it.

After a few days in Ireland, where there were plenty of Irish flags, Guinness logos, and a few more beverages than I’d care to remember, entering the concert was like entering a different world. The people of Ireland loved Springsteen, the cab driver who took us to our hotel from the airport when we landed, as well as everyone else we spoke with, affectionately called him “Brucey,” but the way they expressed that love in the concert was through the American flag.

There was the younger girl with the flag

wrapped around her shoulders, the older man with a flag on his t-shirt, and the younger couple with matching flag bandanas. What struck me was that this wasn’t some nouveau-ironic statement, it wasn’t being done sarcastically. In showing their appreciation for this American icon of entertainment, they earnestly believed that the American flag was the symbol to reach for. I thought of this moment a lot as I walked back to the hotel after the concert –the flag in all its glory.

Then, a few days later, we arrived back at the airport to head home. Dublin happens to be the only airport in Europe with a US Preclearance facility. Essentially, they allow you to clear customs prior to even getting on the plane, let alone having to deal with the long lines at LAX. It was absolutely a timesaver, and much less of a hassle than going through the normal customs process, but it was the second time on the trip where the American flag truly stood out. There are only 15 such preclearance facilities in the world, 9 of which are in Canada, and another three in the Caribbean. The political discussions around these facilities can be fraught, but it was fascinating to me to see US Customs and Border Patrol agents, sitting at desks that look just like any customs station you have ever passed through at an American airport, on Irish soil with a flag sitting at each desk.

As I walked out of LAX and back to my car for the drive home, I started noticing flags in more places. It made me prouder – somehow these two chance encounters with the flag outside of our country made me notice and appreciate the flag in our own that much more, and just in time to celebrate its adoption.

It was a lesson to pay closer attention to everything that surrounds me, but also to remember to find the things, the symbols, that bring us closer together, instead of driving us further apart.

Happy Flag Day!

We All Have Skin In The Game

A REFRESHER COURSE ON SKIN CANCER 101

June gloom won’t stand out this year, with January through May having been pretty gloomy. There is a silver lining from all these cloudy days: less skin cancer in the forthcoming months and years. That’s because folks weren’t spending as much time outside, not because the clouds protect you; a heavy cloud layer blocks sunlight, but not the ultraviolet (UV) rays that are beyond the visible spectrum of radiation. Radiation is a broad term, a form of external energy. You could also call radiation “electromagnetic waves” – as they have electric and magnetic properties. Radio waves are an example, as is visible light. Their wave-like characteristics have a relatively long length between the peaks, thus almost no energy is deposited within the body.

As the wavelength (frequency between peaks) of electromagnetic radiation shortens, energy deposition in the body can occur. UV energy only penetrates the surface of the body and can cause heating (sunburn). With very short wavelengths the higher frequency

UV rays, and especially ultra-high frequency x-rays, the energy can become ionizing. This means enough energy to knock electrons from their parent atoms, making charged particles called ions. Doing this to DNA molecules can make cell replication – which happens all the time in the skin, our largest organ – go rogue, and cause cancer. Even the highest-energy UV rays do not penetrate deeply into the body (unlike x-rays, which do).

There are three main types of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma – 85% of all skin cancers – squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma – representing 10% and 5% of skin cancer, respectively. UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds is a major cause. So, Ipanema’s tall and tan and young and lovely girl’s skin may go south fast. Choose tall and “fair” instead. You can still be old and lovely if you take care of your skin. Speaking of “fair,” light-skinned and blonde, as well as red headed people, are more susceptible to UV skin damage and cancer.

My best friend from college let his “birthmark” grow too long and died from metastatic melanoma in his mid-thirties leaving a young child and wife behind. Today, even metastatic melanoma can be cured with advanced immunotherapy, but early detection can prevent death.

In the US, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Approximately 107,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2023, and about 7,200 people will still die from the disease. In addition, there will be an estimated 5.5 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer – more than 1 million new cases each year. Like all cancers, prevention and screening are crucial to saving lives. Key to prevention is avoiding prolonged exposure to UV rays, and when unavoidable, wearing appropriate clothing (including hats, UV protective glasses) and/or using a strong UV blocking cream. Many of us have skin lesions. When to worry? If lesions bleed, if they have irregular borders, color variation, are raised and

especially if they grow.

Formal Screening means an annual checkup with an experienced dermatologist. Yet it’s tough even for dermatologists when we have many freckles or spots to follow growth and pay attention to their features over time. Enter digital technology and artificial intelligence: As of May 2023, Hoag Family Cancer Institute and the dermatologic oncology team led by Dr. Steven Wang started utilizing the Vectra WB 360 total body photography imaging device to aid in clinical diagnosis. This technology captures high-resolution 3D images of the entire body surface in just three milliseconds, allowing for tracking and mapping of all moles and lesions, something the human eye has trouble doing. Computerized algorithms can thus compare one’s multiple lesions over time. “The ultimate goal is to detect skin cancer at the earliest stage while minimizing the need for unnecessary skin biopsies,” says Dr. Wang.

Indeed, Hoag’s dermatology oncology program is a comprehensive and convenient service that offers prevention, diagnosis and treatment of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer in a one-stop shop overseen by Dr. Steven Wang, who is also a Mohs surgeon (a procedure used to remove thin layers of skin, one at a time, named for Frederick Mohs) with 16 years of his academic career spent at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before joining the Hoag Family Cancer Institute. The team also utilizes cutting-edge imaging technologies such as digital dermoscopy, which allows visualization of sub-surface skin structures that are not visible to the naked eye. Hoag’s team includes oncologists, pathologists, genetic counselors, dermatologists, radiation oncologists and surgical oncologists working together to evaluate and develop the most effective treatment strategies tailored to the individual patient’s needs.

When there’s so much skin in the game, it’s good to know where to get covered.

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Newport Beach Country Club

Dear NBCC Members,

Fireworks are coming to Newport Beach Country Club this Fourth of July!

It’s hard to imagine our country’s birthday, July 4, without fireworks. Fireworks and barbecue just go with Independence Day—and we’ll have them this year at NBCC.

One might wonder, how did the tradition of fireworks on the Fourth of July get started? As we prepare for this special day, we did a little research to understand how the tradition came about.

Fourth of July fireworks date back to the summer of 1776. On July 2, 1776, a draft of the Declaration of Independence was voted in favor by 12 colonies. That day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival… it ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Gun, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward and forever more.”

When initial battles of the Revolutionary War broke out in April of 1775, few colonists desired complete independence. By the middle of the following year, many more had come to favor being free. In June, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia called for a resolution of independence, which led to a five-person committee drafting a formal statement, with Thomas Jefferson authoring the original draft.

On July 4, after a number of small revisions to Jefferson’s draft, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The first celebration of Independence Day would take place the following year in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. The Philadelphia Evening Post wrote about the previous day on July 5: “Yesterday the 4th of July, being the anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstrations of joy and festivity. About noon all the armed ships and gallies in the river were drawn up before the city, dressed in the [greatest] manner, with the colors of the United States and streamers displayed.”

After each ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute (in honor of the 13 colonies), the festivities continued. The Evening Post would go on to say, “The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

That same year, John Adams’ hometown, Boston, would also have its own fireworks display. In the years to come, many cities would continue the tradition of celebrating independence by holding picnics and parades culminating in a fireworks display.

From Philadelphia to Boston to Newport Beach Country Club, we will celebrate July 4 with fireworks. Members can sign up online or on the app to participate in this celebration.

Well-Rounded Workouts

FROM PERSONAL TRAINING TO GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES AND RECOVERY MODALITIES, THE NEWLY REMODELED FITNESS CENTER AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO AMP UP YOUR FITNESS.

When Bianca Gillett, director of fitness and recreation, started at Newport Beach Country Club two years ago, she knew the fitness center needed an upgrade and, in March, her dream finally came to fruition. When the club unveiled its finished product—a renovated fitness center that contains upgraded equipment, improved flooring and new mirrors, along with an enhanced arrangement of the space—it became one of the greatest places in town to get a workout in.

But that isn’t solely based on the equipment itself. The fitness center also offers personal training by fitness experts, group exercise classes and even special modalities to assist with recovery on your rest days. With all of this put together, you’re in for a well-rounded workout every time you hit the gym at NBCC.

GETTING

PERSONAL

Those that want some extra assistance can turn to personal training, held right inside

the fitness center at NBCC for an additional fee. The club currently has five trainers on its roster, with each providing high-quality training sessions that focus on correcting members’ form and movement to prevent injuries while also helping them reach their fitness goals.

Before starting personal training, members complete a fitness assessment where they offer details about their training history, previous injuries, fitness goals and lifestyle, ensuring that the sessions are tailored to the individual

and help prevent unnecessary injuries.

According to Gillett, personal trainers are an asset at any gym you go to. “Whether you are new to working out and going to a gym, have hit a plateau in your fitness goals and routine, or need help reaching your next higher level of fitness, a personal trainer can help with this,” she explains.

These sessions also help hold you accountable, providing a built-in routine that encourages you to show up, push yourself harder and have someone motivating you and celebrating your successes with you as you go. The extra fee for personal training has proved worth it to those who have already enrolled in NBCC’s program.

“Personal training has become very popular, and the members who are working with our trainers are very happy with the experience and with the results they are seeing,” Gillett says.

GROUP GATHERINGS

In addition to personal training, a number of group fitness classes are also held at the fitness center at NBCC. Sign up early to ensure your spot is secured, though walk-ins can be accommodated as well, if space permits.

Possibly the hardest thing you’ll encounter is determining which class to go to. Get your heart rate up with circuit conditioning, Zumba, water aerobics and Beach Body, or build up your strength with classes in yoga or hot yoga, Pilates/barre and strength resistance. Golfers especially can take advantage of special workshops as well, including golf strength performance, golf stretch or a youth strength training class for female golfers.

Be sure to decide ahead of time which

classes you’d like to attend, as they often book up completely and first priority goes to those who have registered in advance. This can also be beneficial in case recreation staff need to cancel a class, as those who are registered will be notified if they’ve already signed up online.

BEYOND FITNESS

Working out is obviously the main attraction at the fitness center, but overall health and wellness is the focus so there are plenty of recovery modalities available on-site as well. Members can take advantage of free access to massage guns, foam rollers, posterior and anterior stretching machines, air compression sleeves and more.

“I always preach to my clients: If you want to play hard, you better recover harder,” Gillett says. “A lot of our

members love working out and being active in sports like golf and pickleball. However, those activities can cause wear and tear on our muscles, joints and ligaments.” She says recovery is key to combating that damage so that we can stay active and keep doing the activities that we love as we age.

Recovery just helps aid in keeping your routine well-rounded, along with unique machines, classes and methods to complement. “I believe the equipment and amenities we have are unique. I don’t know too many clubs who have equipment like a curved treadmill, trap bar, squat rack, in-ground turf and air compression therapy,” she notes. “At NBCC, members can be confident that they have access to the latest equipment and training/recovery methods to help improve their health and wellness.”

Good Times at the Grill

GET TO KNOW THE NEW SOUS CHEF WHILE EXPLORING THE LATEST OFFERINGS AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB’S MEN’S AND LADIES’ GRILLS.

My name is Eric Vierling and I have been the sous chef for the men’s and ladies’ grill since late December of 2022. It has been a great experience getting to know all of the members and the wonderful staff here at Newport Beach Country Club and I am looking forward to becoming more familiar with everyone.

I graduated from the University of California, Riverside in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in history and, from there, ended up managing pet stores in Orange County, the Inland Empire and Los Angeles until 2012.

I started my culinary journey shortly after, attending the now-closed Laguna Culinary Arts school in Laguna Beach after my twin daughters were born. I had almost zero cooking abilities at that point, but I was excited at the prospect of being able to do what I had been seeing on cooking competitions and shows.

I began my first cook position in the employee cafeteria at the St. Regis Monarch Beach, a Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond resort in Dana Point, where I spent five years working in several of the restaurants as a line/prep cook, during banquets and at the Monarch Bay Beach Club, which was my first experience working at a member’s club. Since then, I have served as the head chef at Blackbird Tavern in Temecula as well as the executive chef at Embassy Suites by Hilton Temecula Valley Wine Country before coming to NBCC.

I am excited to be a part of the grill team and would like to talk a little about our new menu items, the new omelet bar and our complimentary appetizer happy hour outside of The Wedge.

I am excited to be a part of the grill team and would like to talk a little about our new menu items, the new omelet bar and our complimentary appetizer happy hour outside of The Wedge.

There are many great new items on our breakfast and lunch menus, but I would like to talk about a couple in particular. Our portobello flatbread sandwich is one of our new vegetarian lunch options and it comes with delicious roasted veggies, fresh mozzarella, grilled portobello mushroom caps, a balsamic drizzle and it’s all sandwiched between two halves of a grilled, petite flatbread with basil pesto. It’s colorful, beautiful and delicious.

For breakfast, we have a buttermilk fried chicken and biscuits dish that is absolutely amazing. We brine chicken breast in a buttermilk and hot sauce mixture, then dip it in our secret flour recipe to order. We serve the chicken on top of fresh buttermilk biscuits made in-house and cover it with Italian sausage country gravy. It’s a great dish to share or to keep all for yourself if you’re really hungry.

Every Friday and Saturday from 3-5 p.m., we have a complimentary happy hour in front of The Wedge snack bar. Although we have a rotating menu each day, you can expect items such as steak and chicken tacos, housesmoked barbecue, poke, risotto and many others. You might have seen me down there already, but if not, make sure to come down and say hi.

Also a new addition to the grill that I am excited about is the omelet bar, which is also set up outside of The Wedge snack bar from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. We have a full array of fresh ingredients, whole eggs, egg whites and several types of cheese

to slip into omelets that are prepared by one of our experienced cooks exactly the way you want it. The omelet bar also contains freshly baked pastries and seasonal fruit to round out your morning meal. You are allowed only one visit to the bar per order, but enjoy the show and we hope to see you there.

I am beyond excited to be a part of the team here and hope to stick around for a very long time, providing the best hospitality and experience for everyone.

The Perfect Putt

NEWPORT

BEACH COUNTRY CLUB’S DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION CARLO BORUNDA

DETAILS HOW YOU CAN USE DRILLS TO IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING.

With golf, improvement is a constant necessity. And putting happens to be one of the easiest ways to improve your game. After all, practice makes perfect so the more you’re able to practice your putt, the closer you’ll be to perfection.

According to Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club, how successful your putts are can have an extreme impact on your game—more than you may think. “The average mid-to-high handicap golfer underestimates the effects that poor putting has on their mental approach and final score,” he notes.

Here, Borunda discusses how putting drills can improve your golf game.

BAY WINDOW: Why is it so important to perfect your putting technique?

CARLO BORUNDA: Unfortunately, your score tends to be high if the confidence level in your putting technique is low. One of the most crucial components of improving as a golfer is honing your putting stroke.

BW: Talk about why it is more important to putt well than to drive well in terms of your overall score.

CB: You use your driver a maximum of 14 times during an 18-hole round of golf, but more than 40 strokes in that same round could be attributed to bad putting. Many golfers spend a disproportionate amount of practice time improving their driver swing at the driving

range rather than perfecting their putting technique on the putting green.

BW: Why is it important to practice drills?

CB: Using drills as part of your practice program is essential to improving. They are one of the most effective ways of acquiring a feel for the technique that you’d like to develop as a habit. The best drills are enjoyable to perform and enough of a challenge that they produce noticeable progress after each session.

BW: What skills should golfers focus on to become more effective on the putting green?

CB: Golfers should focus on developing three key abilities when practicing. The first and most crucial of the three skills is distance control. The

A great drill for encouraging a square club face at impact is to line up two golf balls and attempt to make contact with both of them.

Left: This ladder-putting exercise will assist you in determining the distances at which you feel most at ease. Place 4-5 golf balls two feet apart from one another and try to make as many as you can. Middle and right: Practicing with a friend is a great way to challenge your skills.

ability to deliver a square club face at impact comes next. And finally, in order to be regarded as a well-rounded putter, one must also be able to roll the golf ball on their intended path to the hole.

BW: What are the core setup fundamentals when it comes to putting?

CB: Grip, stance, head position and ball position are the setup fundamentals of putting. Your grip should promote a square club face. The best technique to perform this fundamental is to place your hands in an opposing position with your thumbs down the center of the grip. The putter’s swing path is most affected by your posture, which includes your arm position. The two primary swing pathways support either a putter that swings back and forth in a straight line or a path that curves slightly inward toward the golfer’s feet as the putter swings. If you wish to see the putter swing on a straighter route, it is recommended that you stand with more tilt from the waist and hold the putter with flexed elbows. If you like a more arcing swing path, stand taller with your arms extended. Your head position influences your ability to view the intended putt line. The two most prevalent spots to place the golf ball for the best putters on the LPGA or PGA Tours is right below or slightly outside of your eyeline. A standard putter has roughly four degrees of loft. When putting on slower greens or when your golf ball is lying in the longer grass outside of the putting surface, this loft comes in handy. It is ideal to reduce some of this loft on the putting green by placing the golf ball slightly behind the putter grip. This will keep the golf ball

from launching into the air before it starts rolling toward the hole.

BW: What are some of the best drills to try to improve your putting?

CB: Putting with your eyes closed is a versatile drill. This form of practice can be used to test several aspects of your putting technique. To begin, you can use it to hone your sense of distance control. You can then strengthen your ability to achieve centeredness of contact. Finally, putting with your eyes closed can help enhance your balance awareness, which should be a priority if you want to improve the first two skills.

The straight uphill and downhill putt from within 10 feet is an area where every golfer can improve, and the pros spend a great amount of time [working on this]. The goal is to develop a repetitive stroke that varies just slightly in backswing length depending on which side of the hole you are putting from. The squareness of the club face and overall swing tempo should remain consistent. Make 10 putts from either side before moving on to another drill or practice station.

An undisputed fact is [that] a putt will never fall into the hole if it fails to reach the hole. The pull back drill encourages the golfer to improve in this area. You can set the distances of this drill as stringent as you would like, but the overall premise remains the same—[and that] is to either hole the putt or putt it just past the hole if it misses. Begin by placing a ball marker at your starting position. The goal is to attain a score of 10. A putt that ends no more than two

feet past the hole is worth one point. A one-putt results in two points. Any putt that falls short of the hole needs to be pulled back two full lengths of the putter or six feet from the target. You then need to hole that putt. A successful two-putt receives zero points. If you don’t make a two-putt, you lose two points.

My favorite putting drill involves rolling a golf ball down a metal yardstick, which can be purchased at most hardware stores. This is my favorite because of its simplicity and ability to be practiced inside on any level floor. Putting the ball down the ruler at least 10 times in a row with the golf ball just rolling a few feet further once it exits the end of the ruler is a solid challenge. This exercise will help you finetune your technique and gain confidence in your short distance putting.

BW: Do you recommend practicing these drills with another golfer?

CB: Yes, you can make it a competition while you work on your drills. This is an excellent approach to provide some much-needed pressure, which will only serve to enhance your focus. Practice partners can also help by pointing out errors in your technique that you might miss when practicing alone.

BW: Anything else to add?

CB: Spending time working on one’s putting technique is a worthwhile investment, but it can put even the healthiest back to the test. Take plenty of breaks while practicing and stretch your legs and neck muscles as needed.

Serving Up Smiles

AS A SERVER AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB’S SEAHORSE GRILLE, ROBERT ROSALES ENSURES THAT MEMBERS HAVE AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER.

It has been about six years since Robert Rosales came across a flyer advertising a job fair that was to be held at Newport Beach Country Club. This took place not long after the old clubhouse was torn down and rebuilt, with the new building opening in the summer of

2016. The job fair was a push to hire staff for the reconstructed clubhouse, and it panned out perfectly for Rosales, who was hired to work at the club as a food runner. Now, he is a server at Seahorse Grille, a role he was promoted to five years ago.

Rosales enjoys working at the club because

of its great environment and the people that he is surrounded by. “The staff and members really do treat you like family, and we are all given tools to do our best,” he adds.

His job now mainly involves ensuring that all of the members that are seated at his tables have a memorable experience while dining at the Seahorse Grille. In addition, he says he must anticipate their needs to the best of his ability so that he can provide the best service possible for each and every one of them. He works hard to customize and elevate their meals so that every visit becomes a memorable one.

Still, Rosales says the hardest thing he has encountered during his time at NBCC is learning members’ names and keeping their golf and social preferences straight.

Before coming to NBCC, Rosales worked at popular nearby seafood restaurant Bluewater Grill, a nautical-themed eatery located right on the water. He also previously held positions at Equinox, a luxury health and fitness club, as well as in pool construction.

When he’s not at work, Rosales is very active, enjoying playing sports like basketball and tennis. He also really loves to play poker, noting that his dream job would be to become a professional poker player, which is actually a big goal of his. He also hopes to get married soon.

In addition, he likes spending time with his family and his four-week-old kitten named WALL-E, which was named after the Disney character along with the fact that he was rescued from an actual wall. He also has a sister that used to work at NBCC as well.

Next time you stop by to dine at Seahorse Grille, keep an eye out for Rosales to say hi, introduce yourself or have a warm conversation as he helps to provide service with a smile.

Finding Happiness

NEWPORT

BEACH COUNTRY CLUB MEMBERS BLAKE AND SHAYNA WILSON-HAYDEN SHARE THEIR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS, THE TALENT THEY’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE AND THEIR MOTTO FOR LIFE.

Every so often, the editors of Bay Window send out a questionnaire to one of the esteemed members or employees of an International Bay Clubs property to gain some insight into his or her life. These questions allow our readers to learn something new about old friends, or discover somebody they have not met before. For this issue, we’re getting to know Newport Beach Country Club members Blake and Shayna Wilson-Hayden.

BAY WINDOW: What is your idea of perfect happiness?

BLAKE WILSON-HAYDEN: Sitting in a cozy chair, sipping a cup of coffee with the sun on my face while listening to my wife tell me she is perfectly happy.

SHAYNA WILSON-HAYDEN: Vacationing in Maui with friends and family, listening to country music, drinking a cold glass of Duckhorn [wine] while watching the kids play on the beach.

BW: If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, who or what would it be?

BLAKE: I’d come back as Lucy, our dog. She has great owners and she gets lots of love and treats.

SHAYNA: Ava, Zoe or Max’s daughter so I can have more time with them.

BW: Who is the greatest love of your life?

BLAKE: Hands down, my wife. She brings me great joy. Especially lately when she’s discussing her golf lessons or her pickleball swing.

SHAYNA: My husband. We met at Mutt Lynch’s in our early 20s and I loved him from the first day I met him. It wasn't until several years that we were serious, but I always knew he was the one.

BW: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

BLAKE: I’d like to be younger, please.

SHAYNA: I would love to have more patience—especially at 7 a.m. when no one is eating their food and we are late for school.

BW: Which talent would you most like to have?

BLAKE: I’d like to be able to fly, but I don’t know if that qualifies as a talent. If not, then I’d like to be a talented orator that can mesmerize others with my words.

SHAYNA: The ability to slow down and live in the moment. I’m always so busy with errands, schedules, activities and to-do lists that I feel like I’m missing out on opportunities to be intentional. I know that the days my kids want me around are numbered.

BW: What is your most treasured possession?

BLAKE: I’m not certain, but I do know my Stealth 2 driver is up there.

SHAYNA: My family—they are irreplaceable.

BW: What is your favorite occupation?

BLAKE: Astronaut. Floating up there in space where it’s beautiful and quiet sounds pretty nice.

SHAYNA: Being a mom. There’s no other job I would rather be doing.

BW: What trait do you most value in your friends?

BLAKE: I’d have to say loyalty. There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. And finding good friends that feel the same is hard to … [do].

SHAYNA: Loyalty. Having friends who are family that you can count on to be there for you no matter what is pretty special.

BW: What is your motto?

BLAKE: No whammies, no whammies.

SHAYNA: Slow obedience is no obedience. Eat your food; be kind, respectful and honest. Work hard, solve problems, don’t create them and, above all else, pray.

Dear Members,

Hats off to all the Dads and Grads! June is such an exciting month as we celebrate all month long. Starting with all our graduates who have worked so hard to get to this day, whether it is a kindergarten graduation, middle school, high school or college graduation, the struggle is real. I’m not just talking about the kids, how about we hear it for the parents that have been there every step of the way. It really does take a village and sleepless nights, and maybe more than a few gray hairs, but hey parents, you did it!

Speaking of graduates, this past month I had the privilege of participating in the interview and selection process for our Balboa Bay Club Scholarship program which benefits seniors in the Newport Mesa School District. What an amazing group of young men and women! Thank you to all our members who continue to support our scholarship program and don’t forget you can make donations at any time to the scholarship fund. Simply make your check payable to the Balboa Bay Club Scholarship fund and drop it off at the Club desk or mail it to the club: Attention Aaron Trent. You can read all about this year’s recipients in next month’s issue of the Bay Window. For now, my hat’s off to all our BBC graduates for all their hard work and for all their achievements!

Of course, it wouldn’t be June if we didn’t celebrate all the Dads and there is no better way to celebrate dad than with a day on the bay! Join us for our 16th Annual Father’s Day Car Show on Sunday, June 18th. Every year it gets better and better and this year is no exception. Once again Aaron Trent and our own Chairman of the Board of Governors, John Wortmann have provided a lineup of cars you won’t want to miss.

Be sure to check out all the June events in this issue and mark your calendar so you don’t miss any of the fun!

We look forward to welcoming you at the club!

Capital Destruction: A Necessary Evil

UNDERSTANDING THE EXPANSIONARY AND CONTRACTIONARY ECONOMIC CYCLES

There are only two ways to destroy capital – (1) bombs, or (2) bankruptcy/default. A definition for capital as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is “wealth in the form of money or other assets owned by a person or organization or available or contributed for a particular purpose such as starting a company or investing.” It’s a broad definition but includes anything you can imagine that has a value, including real estate, collectibles, securities, etc. Although there are places in the world where bombs unfortunately and unfairly are being dropped, leveling buildings and other tangible assets, the focus of this article is on liquid capital that must be necessarily destroyed in the aftermath of the Fed’s aggressive financial engineering.

To better understand why capital destruction is necessary to the economic and business cycles, let’s review a key underlying driver of capital growth or decline – monetary policy. After years of ultra-accommodative and expansionary monetary policy, particularly in the U.S. where interest rates were artificially held down through the Federal Reserve’s FOMC activities, various consequences have blossomed. These include looser bank lending conditions, higher rates of inflation and asset bubbles (as inexpensive money meant a lower investment risk assessment due to lower costs of capital).

The ebb and flow between expansionary and contractionary monetary cycles is directly linked to the financial and business cycles, as articulated clearly by the Federal Reserve bank of New York in their January 2010 staff reports publication entitled, Monetary Cycles, Financial Cycles, and the Business Cycle. Economic “good times” are accompanied by greater risk-taking, as capital allocations are more readily directed toward riskier and unproven business and economic models. This is an important aspect of the monetary cycle, without it many revolutionary or simply evolutionary ideas for technology, workflows or other goods/services solutions produced in an economy would not be able to

find funding to get started.

Conversely, extended periods of monetary base expansion mean that more than a rational amount of capital could end up flowing into ideas, businesses, or other ventures that have little to no long-term value or economic contribution. Therefore, during the contractionary phase of a monetary cycle, those same ventures, ideas, and other assets would necessarily become worthless as the money tide ebbs away. In this ebbing process, tremendous capital is eviscerated into thin air, just as easily and quickly as it was created into existence by the highly coordinated efforts of the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury Department. The key to mastering the understanding of this dynamic is simple. Remember that the most prudent capital allocation decisions are made when interest rates are at historical averages,

not several hundred basis points below (expansionary) or above (contractionary).

As business owners and investors plan for their futures, I would recommend a careful and extended analysis of your cash flow needs over the next two to three years. During this forwardlooking period, the availability of affordable capital will necessarily become scarcer. This will favor businesses and investors who utilize a dynamic cash management program that could meet expenses and other liabilities in a timely manner. An effective cash management strategy includes a clear projection of needs over the next six to twelve months (or longer) versus a prudent (perhaps even more conservative) estimate on income generated during the same period. If there’s little margin, consider increasing your cash position by 20-40% more than the amount of projected deficit.

The Camera Focused On Chef Prathapan

CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHER KIMBERLY M. WANG ON THE ART OF THE LENS IN THE BBR KITCHEN

Kimberly M. Wang is a Legacy Portrait, Editorial, and Brand Storytelling Photographer and former Television Producer and Director for Martha Stewart, ESPN, MTV, Food Network, PBS, and many other major networks. As a Photographer, her work has appeared in international publications including Vogue, The New York Times, Billboard, and Le Monde. You can learn more about her work at her website and Instagram. www.eardog.com / @eardogfoto

Through your work in Television and Photography, you’ve worked with a lot of renowned folks who are used to being in front of the camera. How does your process change when your client has some anxiety about being photographed?

The Portrait Experience I create for each client is designed to address all the aspects of having one’s portrait taken that can cause anxiety. So, In-Person Wardrobe Styling

and Story Planning Sessions help us lay the groundwork for an enjoyable shoot, and take away the concerns about what to wear that’s most flattering. Add to that, clear posing direction, my authentic, Editorial/Magazine style of shooting on location—in places that evoke the stories my clients want to share—and Professional Hair and Make Up Styling. All of this, plus a few decades of creating visual storytelling for major networks and publications, set the stage for every client to look their absolute best.

What’s the common denominator amongst your diverse roster of clients?

Self-Love. Even with my clients who may be quite shy, they have a strong sense of their value. And especially since the pandemic, they know intuitively how important it is to document their lives and legacy for posterity.

We’ve heard you create heirloom quality wall art and albums featuring the images you create of your clients. What makes these products so special?

We commission for my clients an array of Wall Art, from Modern to Ornate to Minimalist, at an array of price points, to complement each client’s aesthetic and decor.

And many of my clients travel a great deal, and they’ve seen portraiture displayed in homes and museums from Europe to Asia and everywhere in between, so they know Fine Art when they see it. So our most luxurious Wall Art offering is Museum Quality Framed Canvas made by my artisan partners here in the USA, and takes as long to craft as a fine piece of furniture, and is meant to hang prominently in every style of home.

What’s your best advice for anyone getting ready for a Portrait Session?

Try to get a good night’s sleep before your session, which should start early in order to capture the lovely morning light. Get haircuts, manicures, and facials at least 5 days before your shoot. And have some heart-soothing and invigorating images of life moments and favorite places to bring to mind when it’s time to shoot. Keeping those images readily available will help you to communicate that spark in your eyes that will allow your light to shine though.

Balboa Bay Club Members receive a special discount of 20% off of Icon Session Fees. And 30% off of Legacy Session Fees.

A complimentary 6” x 6” Ice Block Table Top Art Piece handmade in Italy, featuring a favorite portrait from the client’s image collection is also included. The Art Piece is a $550 Value.

Mother’s Day Brunch At Balboa Bay Resort

AN ENCHANTING EVENT TO CELEBRATE MOMS

Mother's Day Brunch at Balboa Bay Resort was a huge success this year, with resort guests, members, and visitors coming together to celebrate their moms in style. The event, held in the Grand Ballroom and Terrace, was attended by resort guests, Balboa Bay Club members and visitors alike, all eager to enjoy a delicious brunch spread and take in the stunning views of Newport Harbor.

The brunch menu was an absolute delight, featuring a wide variety of dishes to suit every taste. From classic brunch staples like eggs

benedict and waffles to more unconventional offerings like sushi and a raw bar, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Freshly squeezed juices, mimosas, and bellinis were also on offer, adding to the festive atmosphere of the occasion.

The Grand Ballroom and Terrace provided the perfect setting for the event. Guests were able to enjoy their brunch while soaking up the warm California sunshine, and spending quality time with their loved ones. Floral arrangements, which were created by the talented team at Penelope Pots, were a true

sight to behold. Guests were greeted by a stunning display of fresh blooms, including roses, peonies and lilies, arranged in elegant arrangements available for purchase.

Throughout the event, the atmosphere was one of warmth, joy and celebration. Mothers were showered with love and appreciation, and families and friends came together to create special memories that will last a lifetime. The staff at Balboa Bay Resort went above and beyond to ensure that every guest had a wonderful time, and their efforts were greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance.

Treats And Sweets On The June Summer Menu

FROM VANILLA CARDAMOM FRENCH TOAST TO CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE PIE, DADS AND GRADS REJOICE!

My grandson’s favorite fun day of the year will be National Dinosaur Day on June 1st and mine will be National Donut Day on June 2nd (I think an early run to Sidecar Doughnuts is in order!). And National Bubbly Day on June 3rd is just perfect for a Saturday because there are oh so many Bubblies to taste all day! June 7th is a good day to celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day (maybe a scrumptious cone at Handel’s Ice Cream) and National Best Friend’s Day is busy with many celebrations, sharing of great memories and creating new ones on June 8th. Kisses to all on National Kissing Day, June 22nd … we all need more hugs and kisses, don’t we? And the whole month of June is Care for your marvelous adoring Grandparent’s Month and National Candy Month, which means Goobers for me!

It’s also the start of the summer season, graduation month and Father’s Day, so let’s talk flavor. Fish sauce is your culinary weapon to add salty, umami punch to recipes; a drizzle adds a deep, rich flavor. Calabrian chili paste is a spicy condiment of dried Calabrian peppers crushed with olive oil, salt and vinegar. Use it to bring hot heat to your pasta dishes, sandwiches, pizza and so much more.

For your fabulous father, start the day with Vanilla Cardamom French Toast made with challah bread that is dipped in a vanilla, cardamom and nutmeg custard and griddled until golden. A little cardamom goes a long way with this complex spice, a member of the ginger family, warm and sweet. Top with a blueberry glaze or caramelized apples with a spoonful of Greek yogurt.

Welcome to adulthood, when you can make a reservation at a casual pizza spot, sit outside and drink some well-made cocktails

at your College Graduation Party. Good looking dishes that are Instagramable and will keep everyone busy while they compose their shots are perfect for this celebration. My homemade Orange Julius’ (recipe shared) with a cheeseburger chaser is perfect for this momentous occasion with cap and gown photos. Toasts and wonderful fun foods, pastas, sloppy Joe sliders, beef kabobs, bestever guacamole, marshmallow pops rolled in your school colors and a graduation sheet cake are festive, fun and memorable with family and friends.

Celebrate this spring-into-summer month with great parties, great food and great fun.

CHOCOLATE WHISKEY MARTINI

Boozy, earthy and rather romantic, fun and easy to make. Drizzle a little raspberry jam into the martini glass. Place a few raspberries on a skewer and use as garnish. Go ahead – drink your dessert!

4 ounces vodka

4 ounces chocolate whiskey 1 ounce agave nectar

Place ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Add the three ingredients. Shake well and strain into 2 martini glasses.

HACKED ORANGE JULIUS

Making this in the comfort of your own home is bliss on demand and perfect for graduation parties. Serves 4.

3/4 cup ice cubes

1/2 can orange juice concentrate 1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup half and half

1 banana, sliced

1/3 cup sugar

1 pasteurized egg

1 tablespoon powdered nondairy creamer

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Orange wheels, for garnish

Put ice cubes in a blender, pulse until crushed. Add the additional ingredients and blend on high speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour into four 8 oz. glasses and garnish with orange wheels and fun straws.

*This is the latest installment in a series of articles throughout 2023 celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Balboa Bay Club.

In a land of eternal sunshine, it’s sometimes tough to tell when summertime really starts. Unofficially, they say, it’s right after Memorial Day. Technically, the third week of June. But does it really matter when the good times last forever, at least in memories?

For 75 years, the Balboa Bay Club has been the epicenter of summer fun in Orange County. There might be a lot more of it around town these days, but the BBC is still ground zero. Imagine back to the summer of 1947, with no nightclubs or live music venues for miles. The

LOOKING BACK AT 75 YEARS OF FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND SEASONAL FROLIC AT BALBOA BAY CLUB.

original snack shack and makeshift dance floor enjoyed by the earliest members was the place to be. It was the only place to be.

Post-War big band music, cool evolving jazz and tried & true country classics were the soundtrack of the time. You better believe there was some fun dancing and other shenanigans going on in them good old days. And there was a lot of it. This was pre-sit-at-home watching TV days. No Netflix. No TVs.

By the time General Eisenhower took over as POTUS, television started shaping homes throughout the nation and started raising its first

generation of Americans, the Baby Boomers. Around the BBC, these were the earliest swim team members and sailing students. They were the kids in the first summer camp programs that remain a staple of generational enjoyment. They would go on to be general beach carousers, water sportsmen, fishermen, power boaters, volleyball players and among the earliest in on the California surf craze.

From the very beginning, many of that first generation of BBC families graduated from Newport Harbor High, opened in 1930. Graduation celebrations were held at

Circa 1950s

the Club beginning in the summer of 1932, and have been ever since. Now several high schools are represented annually for all sorts of graduation activities. Proms, dinner parties, private lunches, many a family have made fond memories of graduation celebrations at 1221 PCH, with more happening this month.

Through the Elvis-Beatles-Led Zeppelin years (or Frank Sinatra-Herb Alpert-Motown if you prefer), the well-founded Balboa Bay Club swung into and through the ’60s with style. The place to be? Let’s put it this way: John Wayne lived next door. You can’t really top that. Richard Nixon, a few miles down the road, had to be at least a little bit jealous.

Many high profile figures from entertainers to royalty have shared laughs and good times of all kinds at many summer happenings here. Sailing events and other tournaments of all sorts are ever right around the corner. Through the years, the top tennis players and golfers in the world were regular visitors, whether for tournament

play or the social scene. Often, it was both.

Some of those kids that were learning to swim back in the ’50s grew into Olympians. Hosting countless sports banquets and awards ceremonies is a proud BBC tradition that continues to this day. The mid-’70s saw Paul Salata and pals establish the most enduring event, Irrelevant Week, happening the first few days of summer this very month for the 47th consecutive year. It is kind of a big deal.

Last year’s honoree, quarterback Brock Purdy of the 49ers had the most significant NFL impact of any Mr. Irrelevant so far. The 2023 honoree celebrated this month is defensive tackle Desjuan Johnson from Toledo. He’ll get his crack with the Rams after he swoops in for a week of a lifetime and pick up his Lowsman Trophy. Best of luck to Desjuan in his NFL pursuit!

Live music continues to underscore the summertime fun around the pool, beach and patios. It’s interesting to note that the standard classic cover bands are as much in

demand as the original artists. Music from the ’50s to today is still the soundtrack of our life. The BBC Summer Concert Series features the best local entertainment from Orange County and beyond.

Whether it’s weddings, graduations or charity events, the venue for formal gatherings doesn’t get better than the Balboa Bay Club and Resort. Many a bride has walked down the aisle here on the grounds in the glow of the Newport Beach Sunset. No doubt a lot of those memories are in step with nostalgic music from long-time club favorite The Four Freshman, to the Carpenters to Ed Shereen.

The Summer of ’23 promises more of what we’ve come to know and a continuation of good times. There will be laughs. There will be children playing in the pool and laughing at the beach. There will be parties, socials, bingo and bunco. There will be celebrations and ceremonies. Most of all, there will be newly minted memories.
