Dear Friends,

If you have had enough listening to and/or watching all the political intrigue bombarding our collective nerves, let it go and come directly to your club, and don’t stop, except for traffic signals. The golf course awaits at NBCC, and the beach sand is Tide white and pure against the gently lapping Newport Harbor shore. Corny prose, but perfect for a Hallmark card, right? Sometimes in life, corny, hackneyed prose is just what fits. Is there a better summer place other than Newport Beach, California?

Tell me why you must go to Europe in August? If you are determined to have a change of scene, and you feel like getting on a plane, if the exit door doesn’t blow out, or a landing wheel does not fall off, then a fine August alternative is a visit to the Outrigger Canoe Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. It’s the Bay Club of the South Pacific. The ultimate in island hospitality, and our members are considered Ohana (family). Read Alex Chazen’s article in the August issue (Member Benefits) on the Outrigger.

Preferring to remain in the continental U.S., partake in a month of summer entertainment with concerts, wine and food festivals, sports and special sunset cocktails shared with friends looking out at unparallel vistas over both the Newport Beach Country Club and Bay Club vantage points. It’s just plain good for the soul and the spirit. Breathe it all in, let out the pressure. You’ve earned the privilege. That’s what club life is all about.

Also in our August issue, please check out the story on the BBR-BBC Dockmaster Troy Heidemann. Troy has been named a Certified Marina Manager (CMM), following a 4-year course of study. He is one of very few in the nation, and the only one in Newport Beach. Celebrity chef and television personality Jamie Gwen (she sells more air fryer ovens on the TV than anyone!) is presenting a new food and wine festival in Newport billed as Relish in late August over at the Club’s sister property VEA in Fashion Island. Read all about it on pages 32-33. The Father’s Day Car Show at Balboa Bay Resort last month was over-the-top successful. More than 2,000 guests converged to survey the auto-art. A photo essay along with the winning entries can be found on pages 30-31.

Our dining columnist Lana Sills (mom of Chef Jamie Gwen, nepotism lives) stopped by the Pool Bar to sample summer libations. Specialty blends, craft cocktails and beverages described to a tantalizing “T” on pages 50-51. And don’t miss all the 4th of July patriotism that was unleashed at both NBCC and BBC. Photo essays appear in both club sections of the August issue.

The Country Club also shares terrific photo essays of member events we call “Member Moments.” They take a peek at Father’s Day and a selection of additional golf-oriented special events. A sentimental Father-Daughter Dance can be found on pages 62-63.

All this plus a trip to Santa Barbara with the ladies of the BBC’s “1221” support club raising funds for student scholars, Summer Speaker Series at Newport Beach Country Club, and so much more.

This is why you don’t need to go far to enjoy the best summer, right here in Newport Beach.

A Rare Distinction

BBR-BBC Director of Marina Operations Troy Heidemann rises to the class of Certified Marina Manager (CMM) following a 4-year training course. He is the only CMM in the Newport Harbor, with less than 10 in So Cal. The recently reported announcement came from the Association of Marina Industries.

Troy Heidemann’s journey from the sun-drenched shores of Newport Beach to become the Director of Marina Operations at the Balboa Bay Club is nothing short of inspiring. Born and raised in Newport Beach, Troy’s deeprooted passion for the ocean and yachting was instilled in him early on. His education at Corona del Mar High School, Newport Harbor High School, and Vanguard University set the stage for a career that would see him become a respected figure in the yachting community.

“My parents were teachers in the Newport Beach area,” Troy recalls. “My dad taught at Corona del Mar High School, and my mom at Ensign Intermediate School. Growing up here, the ocean was a natural part of life.” His early years spent around the local waters undoubtedly influenced his career path.

Troy’s professional journey is as diverse as it is impressive. Starting at Heritage Yacht Sales, he found his way to the Balboa Yacht Club as a sailing administrator, a role that allowed him to immerse himself in the world of yachting. His experience organizing races and creating enduring events like the CHOC Regatta, an initiative that holds a special place in his heart due to his son’s premature birth, showcases his

unwavering commitment to his profession and community.

In a twist of fate, a casual visit to celebrate a birthday with Bobby Wilson, the then-Dock Master of Balboa Bay Club, led to Troy’s current position. “Bobby asked if I wanted the job. It was an opportunity to stay closer to home and reduce my travel, so I took it,” Troy explained. Since then, he has never looked back, pouring his heart and soul into making the marina at Balboa Bay Club a beacon of excellence.

Troy’s dedication and relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to the Association of Marina Industries’ Certified Marina Manager (CMM) program. “I always try to educate myself,” he says. Starting with a basic course in 2018, he progressed to intermediate and advanced levels, eventually earning his CMM certification in 2023. This achievement, akin to earning a master’s degree, places him among an elite group of marina professionals, a fact that fills him with pride. “It’s an accomplishment that signifies respect from my peers,” he says. “I’m the first in Newport Beach and one of only ten in Southern California. It means a lot to me and gives me a sense of pride. I love the Bay Club. My parents were members here for over 25 years, and I grew up here.”

Under Troy’s stewardship, the marina has seen significant improvements, including extensive dredging projects, enhanced shore power, and numerous community-oriented initiatives. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Members and captains alike commend the enhancements, and the state of California has recognized the marina as a Clean Marina. “Making the members happy is what I’m most proud of,” Troy says. “Hearing that they love being here makes it all worthwhile.”

Looking ahead, Troy is optimistic about the future of yachting, particularly with the advent of hybrid boats. “I see hybrid boats as part of the future,” he notes. “The city of Newport Beach is even working on getting a charging station, which could be the first on the west

coast.” This commitment to innovation reflects Troy’s forward-thinking approach, ensuring the marina stays ahead of industry trends.

His role at the Balboa Bay Club is multifaceted, involving marina operations and extensive community and safety programs. From active shooter training with local law enforcement to coordinating cleanups that remove tons of waste from the harbor, Troy’s work is a testament to his commitment to both the marina and the broader Newport Beach community.

One of Troy’s standout achievements is the marina’s certification as a Clean Marina. “We became a Clean Marina in 2020, a state certification for best practices in marina management,” he explains. “We’re one of only two in this harbor. It’s something that has helped us keep this marina and the harbor clean.” The certification involves rigorous standards for environmental stewardship, something Troy is passionate about. The marina handles oil disposal for boaters and provides oil-absorbent materials to help keep the water clean. Additionally, Troy spearheaded an underwater harbor cleanup initiative, pulling out tons of waste and even finding two loaded guns. “Now the city has embraced this initiative, making it a major event,” he adds.

Reflecting on his journey and the award, Troy says, “I love working for the Pickup and Martin families and the Balboa Bay Club. Their support allows me to make this marina the best it can be. This award is a recognition of that partnership and the hard work we’ve all put in.”

Troy Heidemann’s story is one of passion, dedication, and community spirit. His contributions to the Balboa Bay Club and the yachting world at large are profound, and his vision for the future is as bright as the Newport Beach sun under which he was raised. As he continues to navigate the waters of marina management, Troy remains a beacon of excellence, inspiring all who have the pleasure of working with him.

Automotive Art

THE 17TH ANNUAL BBC-BBR FATHER’S DAY CAR SHOW ATTRACTS 2,000 VISITORS EXPLORING A WORLD-CLASS COLLECTION OF AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN, PERFORMANCE, AND CULTURE.

Amazing auto art filled the upper deck parking garage of Balboa Bay Resort for the 17th annual Balboa Bay Club Car Show. The impressive assemblage of man’s machines attracted some 2,000 guests on a Sunday summer afternoon. Upon arrival, a gleaming vintage cloud-white Rolls Royce set the tone of the show. Just beyond the Rolls, a stunning 1956 300 SC Mercedes Benz Roadster from owner John Word of Newport Beach was a showstopper. The pristine, burgundy-colored convertible won the Chairman’s Award, also taking a top prize at the renown Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance Show. That was just the beginning of the show with more than 100 entrants in multiple categories.

Relish Life!

CELEBRITY CHEF TYLER FLORENCE HEADLINES AN IMPRESSIVE ROSTER OF CULINARY STARS CONVERGING IN NEWPORT BEACH AT VEA RESORT & SPA FOR CHEF JAMIE GWEN’S FABULOUS NEW FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL APPROPRIATELY LABELED AS “RELISH” AUGUST 23 - AUGUST 25.

About a half million rock fans sloshed through the original Woodstock Music and Arts Festival back in 1969. Afterward, about five million more claim they did. Some folks just want to be part of history. For discerning patrons of the culinary arts, here’s your chance.

55 years beyond that summer of ’69, a new wave of rock stars are cooking up a first-of-a-kind foodie fest where organizers expect to set the highest standard in Orange County. And establish a tradition for years to come.

Celebrity chef Tyler Florence along with a renowned cast of culinary talent are on the bill for the inaugural Relish - A Food, Wine & Spirits Experience. The event runs from Friday evening, August 23rd through midday Sunday the 25th at VEA Resort & Spa at Fashion Island. The program features a series of unique cooking and dining experiences woven through a weekend of culinary camaraderie.

The energy behind the event stems from Chef

Jamie Gwen, the Newport Beach-based media personality with an international audience. She conceived the event on the foundation of her culinary training and experience evolved through a decades-long career in television, radio and publishing. Most influential though, was her mother’s kitchen table.

The name Relish is a reflection of Jamie’s upbringing. A single mother raising her only daughter, Lana Sills instilled the importance of mealtime together. Enjoy the food and the process of preparation, but most importantly relish the company and nourish relationships.

For some time, Chef Jamie and some of her like-minded local foodie friends were lamenting the lack of a signature culinary event in Orange County. In early 2023, while sipping a martini (maybe two) at the Balboa Bay Club, she tossed up her arms and said fine, she’ll do it. Yes, she’s already juggling lots of plates with her cooking segments on TV and syndicated radio show, not to mention raising a young son and writing more

books, but she has the contacts to make it happen. Gwen took it on as a celebration of her profession. Now add major event planner to the resume.

The super group of special guests was pretty much a cinch as Chef Jamie called on a bunch of her friends, many of them wellknown from the Food Network and various culinary platforms. Chefs Tyler Florence and Scott Conant have been Jamie’s colleagues for decades; each will share their excellence over two nights in preparing special dinners. Pastry chef Gale Gand and winemakers Bob Cabral and Chris Kajani will lead master classes. So will mixologist

Tony Abou-Ganim, cheesemaster Afrim Pristine, Aarti Sequera specializing in spice, and pastry chef Zac Young. A welcome party on opening night, late night sips and snacks, and live music are some of the other delights on the menu.

Go big or don’t bother, as far as the founder is concerned. It’s clearly a labor of passion for Chef Jamie. Let her describe the vision and the list of adjectives seems endless. Sophisticated, classy, unique, incredible, extraordinary, spectacular, illustrious, extravagant, premier and gastronomic are a start. With a few more, she promises it will be the most impressive, exquisite event to sip & savor ever in Orange County.

Bespoke is another adjective Gwen uses referring to patrons; it means designed for a particularly discerning consumer. With one chance to make an indelible first impression, she’s confident the experience will more than meet expectations. If all goes as well as she expects, she’ll consider exporting the concept to other cities. For now, it’s all about OC.

“I developed Relish, established and spearheaded it, because I believe Orange County deserves a high-caliber culinary event like this,” she said. “Bringing likeminded people together to sip & savor, to Relish in the moment.”

Game Room Gathering Spaces by Barclay Butera

Summer is all about relaxation and gathering with family and friends. And occasionally, when the weather doesn’t cooperate, it’s ideal to have an instant inside solution for entertaining! Enter the classic Game Room. At Barclay Butera Interiors, we love to encourage our clients to include a special space in their home for cocktails, canapés, boardgames, and more. Start with a quintessential card table - it’s a must! Whether it’s Poker, Go Fish with the kids, or a rousing game of what is often called “a social masterpiece” Bridge, having a place to gather makes all the difference. And when the card games are done all the classic boardgames from Monopoly and Scrabble to classic backgammon fit right on top.

If your game room space includes a fully stocked bar all the better. No running from the kitchen to the game room with cocktails; they’re right there at your fingertips. We also encourage installing a fabulous sound system so your favorite music can fill the air and add to the ambiance. Our opinion…no other electronics allowed! Check your laptops, tablets and cell phones at the door… this room is made for conversation and connection with all the important people in your life.

Special touches and accoutrements make the space! We love, playful, dreamy art that inspires the imagination. Beautiful drinkware, serving pieces, and comfortable seating will make for a perfect retreat.

Dear BBC Members,

Can you believe it’s August already? It seems as though the kids just got out of school, and we were celebrating grads and dads and here we are preparing to go back to school! It is a good thing that we like to hang on to summer fun for as long as possible. This month we have plenty of fun to go around as we continue our summer concert series featuring the music of Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift, not to mention everyone’s favorite group, Yächtley Crëw! If you haven’t made your reservation, you’ll want to do so before they sell out. As always A+O and Members Grill are available for your dining pleasure prior to the concert. In addition, Chef Prabeen has created some fun grab-and-go food options and specialty drinks which will be available at the concert.

In addition to our concert series this month members can enjoy our annual Luau, Back to School Bingo, and our 3rd Annual Cornhole Tournament. Check out the previews page for all the details and mark your calendars so you don’t miss out!

Speaking of events, congratulations to all our Olympic Athletes who have been competing in Paris and making America proud. Last month our Director of Recreation, Ashley Pitcock, and I had the pleasure of speaking with Newport Beach’s own Olympian, Kaleigh Gilchrist, before she set off to Paris. She and her fellow teammates on the USA Women’s Water Polo team could not be more excited to be heading to Paris to compete in the 2024 Summer Games. Here at the club, we can’t wait to welcome her back as she has promised upon her return, to share stories with our members and even bring a fellow Olympian or two with her. Stay tuned for more information.

As we head toward the last weeks of summer, be sure to take advantage of all your Club has to offer by spending a warm afternoon on the Club beach or renting a Duffy for an afternoon bay cruise with friends. Don’t forget, members enjoy complimentary one-hour kayak or paddleboard rentals. As always, Chef Chad and his team continue to offer wonderful menu selections for you to enjoy in Members Grill and our friendly staff is ready to provide service with a smile.

We look forward to welcoming you at the Club!

August on Oahu

THE OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB WELCOMES CLUB MEMBERS

Afew weeks ago, we went to Hawaii on a family trip, and as I have written over the last few months, we set up in advance to have the Member Relations team send a letter of introduction to a Hawaiian club –the Outrigger Canoe Club. You’ve probably seen several people (including myself) walking around the Bay Club’s Member Pool wearing a t-shirt or hat with their famous “O” logo with the paddle going through it. After all, leaving the Outrigger without some merch would be like having not gone at all. What is truly special about the Outrigger though, is not the small merchandise shop, but the wonderful place that it inhabits. Set on a beautiful portion of beach, the club looks north at Waikiki, where you get the sense that there is quite a lot going on, even while you sit serenely on the terrace drinking your perfectly blended Henry, or my personal favorite, their plantation iced tea

with a slice of pineapple in it.

One insider tip is that while the Outrigger is great year-round, the summer brings loads of activities. On Friday nights, there are fireworks in Waikiki, and the children (and many of the adults) rush to the water’s edge to take in the wonderful show high above the buildings that line the world’s most famous beach. On one of the Saturdays while we were there, the club was hosting a paniolo western theme night, and while the kids rode a mechanical bull, the parents line danced, all before sitting down and having a wonderful meal together.

One of my favorite parts of the Outrigger is how they celebrate their members’ athletic achievements. As you walk in, you are greeted by a board listing all of the Olympians that are members, and throughout the property, you will find historic photographs of some of the world’s greatest athletes competing for the club.

There is truly a spirit of camaraderie amongst the membership that permeates throughout. However, you are in Hawaii after all, and no discussion of the Outrigger Canoe Club would be replete without a mention of the wonderful beach and all of the activities that it leads to. From Stand Up Paddleboarding to outrigger canoeing, from my daughter’s favorite boogieboarding to my son’s love of building sandcastles on the beach, there is truly something for everyone at the Outrigger.

If you’re going to be on island, or if there is another locale that you are traveling to, make sure to contact our Club Desk at 949.630.4120 or email memberrelations@ balboabayclub.com to get a letter of introduction which you will present when you arrive at the club to obtain entrance.

Paradise at the Club Pool Bar

SIGNATURE AND CRAFT COCKTAILS AND BEVERAGES PREPARED WITH PANACHE AT THE POOL BAR OVERLOOKING THE NEWPORT HARBOR. YOUR BAR STOOL AWAITS!

Soak up the warm summer sun because every hour is happy hour by the BBC pool. There are so many ways to drink the flavors of the season: sweet watermelon, tropical guavas, herbaceous mint and creamy coconut. The classics are always fabulous, but you have to taste the Member’s Pool Bar Signature Cocktails while relaxing poolside.

My favorite Guavita Margarita is frozen with Silver Patron, Triple Sec, fresh lime juice and guava nectar. The Triple Sec provides a luscious, warm note that counterbalances the lime juice’s high acidity. The Beach Bum Rum made with Malibu Coconut Rum (a blend of Rum and Coconut Liqueur), Amaretto, fresh orange juice and grenadine looks like a sunset in a glass. The Ketel One Vodka

Watermelon Splash is so refreshing with St. Germain, lemon juice and mint. The Tajin rim on the BBC Michelada served in a big beer glass is a classic Mexican cocktail and one of the great drinks of summer.

The most popular tequila-based cocktail in Mexico (pending which bar you belly up to) and at the BBC is the refreshing and oh-so-flavorful Balboa Spiced Paloma. It’s

summer cocktails! Frozen Signature Cocktails can be served in a fresh Balboa Bay Coconut for the ultimate thirst quenching experience and mocktail versions of all the drinks are available for kids and grown-ups!

a combination of Lalo Blanco, Cointreau, fresh grapefruit juice, jalapeño and simple syrup all topped with a floater of club soda to lighten everything up. You can, of course, indulge in stellar Whites, Reds and Bubbles plus Beers on tap at the Pool Bar to make your choices even greater.

The Tropical Piña Margarita and the Banana Daiquiri are both the perfect

To pair with your favorite margarita, the Ahi Poke Nachos, Coconut Shrimp and Harissa Lamb Lollipops on the Dive-In Delights Pool Bar menu are sublime choices. Let’s not leave out the kiddos; on the Kids Menu, the Banana Daiquiri Mocktail is the perfect pairing for the grilled cheese and mac & cheese! When it comes to making margaritas at home, passion fruit or mangoes are just begging to be in a margarita and frozen watermelon cubes make for a great Watermelon Margarita Slushie. And to add a bit of spice, muddle fresh jalapeño, agave and fresh lime juice – and don’t forget the Tajin rim to enhance the flavor. The perfect margarita can be even more perfect when you switch up the salt. I rim my margarita

glasses with smoked salt for great flavor; you should come over!

When it comes to tequila, some consider Blanco Tequila the best for margaritas. After it is distilled, it is Blanco Tequila. When it is moved to an oak barrel for 60 days, it is bottled and called Reposado. When aged in small old oak barrels for more than a year, it is called Añejo and perfect for sipping and savoring.

And in my scrumptious opinion, Rosé All Day should be Rosé All Year. There are four seasons – Rosé is not one of them! You can drink it year round and you should. There’s a spectrum of rosés beyond the light pink style to dark coral and near red that drink well year-round. As for today, around the Member’s Pool Bar, the Rosés offered have enough acidity to enjoy through hot days and heat waves.

The very best cocktail is the one you love, tempting your taste buds and quenching your thirst. Cheers to summer~

OLYMPIC ENTERTAINMENT LIVE ON SCREEN FOR MEMBERS AT THE BBC AND NBCC THIS AUGUST

This month, Paris will showcase a diverse array of new sport competition in the Olympics.

Breaking, also known as break dancing, and kayak cross will debut, while surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing make their return from Tokyo 2020. Organizers aim to attract younger fans with sports that emphasize creativity and athletic prowess, as stated on the official Paris 2024 website. However, sports like baseball, softball and karate won't be featured this year.

Breaking will feature men's and women's events with 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls competing, showcasing moves like windmills

and freezes to DJ beats. Judged on technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality, breaking will take place on August 9-10, marking its Olympic debut.

Kayak cross introduces a new format where athletes race through whitewater and obstacles while directly competing against each other. Starting from a ramp above the water, kayakers navigate through a course of gates, with six moving downstream and two upstream.

Returning sports like surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing will have their competitions condensed into a four-day window within nine days. Surfing's scores range from 0.1 to 10.0

by five judges, while sport climbing features a combined lead and bouldering event alongside a separate speed event.

Newport Beach Country Club

Dear NBCC Members,

We do a lot of really cool events and programming at Newport Beach Country Club. One program that has to be at the top of the list is the Newport Beach Country Club Employee Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship fund, founded in 2013 and available to employees or their dependants, is administered by a committee of NBCC members.

The program has grown exponentially since its inception. In 2022, we awarded eight scholarship grants and, in 2023, another 15. This year, we are breaking our record yet again by awarding 23 individuals with grants totaling more than $200,000 — all going toward our employees and their loved ones.

Wow, wow and wow!

Activist and politician Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We are all so grateful for the support of our members who contribute to and help grow the scholarship program. Nearly every single one of our employees has a story to share about the impact the fund has had on their life and/or their education.

August Calendar

Hello members,

On behalf of the entire Newport Beach Country Club, it is our utmost pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the following new members of the NBCC family. We are delighted to have them join our esteemed community, and we look forward to creating unforgettable experiences together at our prestigious club.

Please help me welcome our newest members to the NBCC family:

THE ALVANDI FAMILY

Gil and Nancy Alvandi are based in Newport Coast. Gil, a passionate attorney, finds joy in cooking and sipping Italian wines while Nancy, a neuroscientist, actively participates in their children’s educational activities. The couple are proud parents to Alaïa Skye, 4; Sebastian Pierce, 3; Milana Rayne, 1; and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newest son. Together, the Alvandi family cherishes time spent with one another—as well as with their extended family and friends—and look forward to meeting new families at NBCC.

THE GAMM FAMILY

Erik Gamm grew up in Huntington Beach, graduating from USC in 1993 with a degree in psychology. He currently resides in Chino Hills and Newport Beach with his wife, Valarie, who he met on a cruise to Mexico in 1999, and their twins, Nicholas and Marissa, who are 18 years old. Valarie grew up in Whittier and graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 1995, majoring in accounting. The couple currently owns a successful steel service center business with two manufacturing divisions headquartered in Chino. They are actively involved in volunteering with The Let It Be Foundation, which supports children with life-threatening illnesses like cancer. Their son Nicholas has also been a leader within the foundation for the past five years.

THE LOWEY FAMILY

In 1986, Eric and Eve met in San Francisco and it was love at first sight. Now, the couple and their children—Jared, 27; Sarah, 25; and Jason, 22—are longtime pillars in the Beacon Bay community. Eric, a longtime businessman, was the owner of Pinnacle Surety, which he sold to Alliant Insurance Services in 2020. His next chapter has included a private lending business and enjoying all that life has to offer. He has a passion for golf, with the family’s second home located on the PGA West’s Stadium Course in La Quinta. Since getting a pilot’s license at 18, Eric also spends his free time in the skies and on the water fishing. Eve has been CEO of interior design company Chameleon Design in Costa Mesa since 1992. A Houston native, she grew up showing dogs at dog shows, riding horses, competing on the drill team and excelling in Girl Scouts before finding her true passion. She enjoys perusing Newport’s shops and galleries and spending time with friends, family and her pups, Lulu and Mickey. Jared was active in baseball and football in high school and graduated with a film degree from Cal State Long Beach in 2020. Sarah graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 2021 with a degree in business marketing and participated in volleyball and soccer in high school. Jason was on both the lacrosse and football teams in high school, graduating from University of Colorado Boulder in 2023 with a degree in business and finance.

Perfect Aim

CARLO BORUNDA, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, SHARES TIPS FOR TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR GAME BY PRIORITIZING ACCURACY.

Innovative technology like the deWiz swing analyzer can help accelerate the feel for distance by providing feedback on the length of your backswing and speed of your arm swing.

There are a number of golf clubs that can be used in a game of golf, from drivers and irons for distance to putters for mastering the final strokes. One type of club you should familiarize yourself with, though, is the wedge.

Wedges are often used to ensure short-range accuracy, offering a bit of finesse to your approach shots. Whether chipping around the green, pitching out of a bunker or simply looking to enhance your precision, these clubs provide better control and improved accuracy if you know how to use them.

“To lower your score, you must be able to execute precise shots with these shorter clubs,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “The game will also become more enjoyable once you can improve your accuracy with the wedge.” Here, Borunda discusses how accuracy can amp up your golf game.

BAY WINDOW: What are some ways to accomplish better accuracy?

CARLO BORUNDA: The best golfers are excellent with their alignment, ball contact

and distance control. Each of these skills has a connection to the precision of your approach shots. Progress in these areas requires time and effort to obtain consistent results.

BW: How can improving your accuracy and distance control impact your overall score?

CB: Improving the accuracy and distance control of your shorter shots around the green can help all golfers produce lower scores. According to PGA TOUR statistics, a putt from 5 feet away from the hole is made approximately 75% of the time whereas a putt from 20 feet away is made fewer than 15% of the time. The closer your golf ball is to the hole, the more efficient your putter will be.

BW: How does the accuracy between a professional and amateur golfer differ with their wedge swings?

CB: The PGA TOUR player’s average drive is almost 300 yards while their shot from 100 yards finishes approximately 18 feet from the hole. Professional and amateur driver swing speeds differ significantly, but when it comes to how close to the hole each is capable of hitting the ball with their wedges, the disparity is much smaller. The goal for all amateurs is to make up the difference by becoming more efficient with their wedges.

BW: What are some important tips to keep in mind when working on improving this skill?

CB: Since most of these shots require an abbreviated swing, golfers will benefit by keeping the path of the golf club more in line with the target through impact. The critical element that affects contact is the attack angle. Overly steep will likely create too much digging, resulting in shots that interact with the turf before the golf ball. Too shallow will produce too little turf interaction and poor contact with the golf ball. Learn to land the golf club closer to the ball with the proper amount of bounce. The club face orientation at impact affects the overall flight and spin of the golf ball. Work to maintain consistent club face control with these swings.

BW: Which things should you practice in between rounds of golf?

CB: Your practice sessions should always include time for reviewing the basic fundamentals of posture, grip and alignment. Good posture allows you to properly rotate your hips and torso while maintaining balance. Place a golf club or alignment stick at your feet to confirm your aim. Consistent placement of your hands on the grip and grip pressure while holding the golf club are keys to maintaining club face control at impact. Spend a large portion of your [practice] session developing the feel for the club speed required to hit the various distances for these shorter shots.

BW: What practice plan do you suggest to ensure improvement?

CB: Begin each warm up with a light stretch of your lower and upper body, including your wrists and ankles. A productive practice plan should challenge your focus and help you gain confidence. I recommend setting achievable goals before you begin each practice session. Develop your distance control from your chip shots by placing a small towel on the front of the practice green and hit several shots to this location. As you move further away from the green, switch to your pitching wedge, then sand wedge and eventually lob wedge, repeating the same focus of landing the ball on the towel. Devote time to balance, club face control, tempo and trajectory control. Each of these elements of the golf swing should be practiced routinely. Training your tempo can be done with analyzers from Blast Golf, deWiz Golf or other[s].

Varying the length of your backswing is an excellent way to develop distance control with your wedges.

BW: Which lofts should golfers consider when deciding on their set makeup?

CB: With the correct gapping of lofts between golf clubs, you can greatly improve your ability to control the distance and accuracy of each shot. The typical wedge set makeup back when I first started playing 30 years ago only included a pitching wedge with 50 degrees of loft and sand wedge with 56 degrees of loft. Golfers had to adjust their swing and the orientation of the club head at impact to produce accurate golf shots. Nowadays, five of your allotted 14 golf clubs can be wedges. This is mainly due to how innovation has improved the design of the club head, including the loft of each golf club. The ideal five wedge choices include a 42-degree pitching, approach (46), gap (50), sand (54) and lob (58) wedge. These lofts can fluctuate a couple degrees depending on the brand of clubs you choose to play. Make sure to choose similar lofts when adding or replacing your wedges.

BW: Who should you see to help improve your wedge game?

CB: When choosing new wedges, a trained club fitter can advise you on which clubs to include in your set. They are experts in determining how the loft, bounce and grind of the wedge can improve your game. Working with a PGA or LPGA golf coach is essential to improving all aspects of your game. Your sessions should include an assessment of your short-game skills. With their help, you’ll discover how to improve and what to focus on to become a more accurate and effective player.

Never Trust a Skinny Chef— Or Should You?

LEARN HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR DIET AND DINING HABITS TO CREATE A HEALTHIER YOU.

I’m sure the tagline here is familiar to most: If you know a skinny chef, then it must be true that they don’t eat the great food that they prepare. That, or they are simply not a good chef. I think the team we have here at Newport Beach Country Club produces incredibly tasty food—and, trust me, I try it all.

My experience in the kitchen has been a 25-year journey in the making. During those years, and particularly the last five, my wife

years that ensure this skinny chef can keep up with all the young chefs on the team.

EAT THE RAINBOW

and I have gone all-in on a healthy lifestyle, embracing the principles of a couple key authors that promote “health span” over life span. The concept is that small changes in diet and exercise today can have a huge impact on the quality of your later years.

I must confess, I also have a secret weapon at home. My wife is a registered dietitian at Hoag Hospital and a certified diabetes specialist. I want to share some of the changes we’ve made over the past several

In the quest for optimal health, one of the most effective and enjoyable strategies is to “eat the rainbow.” This approach encourages the consumption of a diverse range of colorful fruits and vegetables, each bringing unique nutrients and benefits to our diet. But beyond the vibrant hues, emerging research suggests that consuming a wide variety of plant foods—at least 30 different types per week, rich in polyphenols—can neutralize free radicals in the body, reduce oxidative stress and lower the risk of chronic disease, significantly enhancing our gut health, immune system and overall well-being. Their anti-inflammatory effects can support healthy brain function and protect against age-related cognitive decline.

If 30 different types of plants per week sounds like a lot, check out our yogurt breakfast bowl, which hits 10 in your first meal of the day alone.

My wife and I rise to the occasion each week by counting on nuts, seeds, whole grains, herbs and spices to bring up the

number and make the dishes flavorful, multicultural and really fun. If 30 sounds too easy, shoot for 40 the next month; eating the rainbow focuses on inclusion rather than exclusion in your diet. Where possible, opt for organic ingredients to avoid pesticides and herbicides that can have a negative effect on your gut microbiome.

SMART SWAPS

By embracing plant biodiversity and making small, consistent changes to your diet, you can significantly enhance your health and well-being.

Start with simple swaps and gradually introduce new plant foods to experience the full spectrum of benefits that nature has to offer. We enjoy finding seasonal fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets and experimenting with our favorite recipes to incorporate new flavors, textures and combinations.

Our next strategy after eating the rainbow is to focus on what’s in the rest of the food we eat. While plant foods are incredibly beneficial, sometimes we are realistically too busy and need to grab something quick. Making smart decisions starts with distinguishing between minimally processed and ultra-processed foods.

Minimally processed foods are natural ingredients that have undergone slight modifications to preserve or improve their nutritional value. Examples include frozen vegetables, canned beans, yogurt, fermented vegetables and whole grain bread. Ultraprocessed foods, on the other hand, are industrially manufactured products with multiple ingredients and additives. They often contain high levels of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, which can negatively impact our health. Examples include sugary cereals, pre-packaged snacks and ready-to-eat meals. Our simple rule is that, if we cannot pronounce the ingredient or can’t find it in a well-stocked home kitchen, we try to avoid it. Let’s be honest: Packaged snacks are engineered to be salty, sweet and make your brain crave more. Invest the time to find things you’ll enjoy eating and ultra-processed foods will become less and less appealing. Isn’t science and human biology amazing? So, we’re eating our rainbow and we’ve found our healthy alternatives to ultra-

processed foods. What next?

TRIED AND TRUE TECHNIQUES

Did you know that the order in which you eat items as well as what you do right after having a meal can drastically change how your body responds? We use this strategy at our favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant. Here’s how you can deploy the same tactics when dining at the club. All of the dishes mentioned are part of our seasonal summer highlights.

Avoid reaching for the delicious focaccia that Donovan has prepared, as the carbohydrate load is a disastrous way to begin the meal. We opt for the biggest salad we can find, packed full of veggies, with an oil and vinegar-based dressing. At Seahorse Grille, go for the Market Board with seasonal vegetables or pick any of our summer salads. All of the plants will set up your gut microbiome and digestion to slow down the absorption of the pasta and pizza that are the real reason we go to dine.

Split one of our fresh-baked sourdough pizzas. I suggest the saltimbocca pizza drizzled with olive oil, which aligns with our tactic and satisfies any craving. This strategy will set you up to talk with Andrew, our sommelier, for a wine recommendation to accompany the pizza or to split one of Donovan’s amazing desserts.

Finish the meal with a leisurely 15-minute walk before heading back to the car and you’ve done your body so many favors while still enjoying a wonderful evening.

Health Happenings

A RECENT WORKSHOP ON THE OASIS LAWN FOCUSED ON WOMEN’S HEALTH.

When it comes to women’s health, Bianca Gillett has long been passionate about spreading knowledge. As director of recreation and fitness at Newport Beach Country Club, it’s easier than ever for her to do so.

At the end of June, the Recreation department hosted the Women’s Health Seminar, inspired by the annual H.E.R. Summit By Hoag that is designed by women for women to spread awareness and empowerment about health.

“I have been lucky enough to go … for the past few years,” Gillett says. “…The event has three to four professional speakers talk and do a Q&A. The professionals range from [an] OB/GYN to a marriage and family therapist. I absolutely love it. But I noticed they’ve never had an NMD— naturopathic medicine doctor—as a speaker. And since I have a friend … who is an NMD, I asked her to come … teach her knowledge to the ladies at the club. I knew it would be a hit, because our members are so health-conscious and always trying to learn more.”

Held on the Oasis Lawn on a beautiful, sunny day, the workshop featured a talk with Dr. Andrea Colon, also known as Dr. Dre, who visits the club every Tuesday to provide her

During the event, Dr. Colon answered a series of questions posed by Gillett covering a range of topics, including what an NMD is, how it differs from a medical doctor, what schooling it requires and how she got into it. They also discussed diet and nutrition, mental health and emotion, plus how it’s all affected by our physical health.

Another major topic of discussion, considering the emphasis on women’s health, was hormones. “[We discussed] how they affect women’s bodies, how stress has an impact on our health, how blood testing and proper IV therapy and supplementation can help people live more optimized lives, and life phases for women, like menstruation and menopause,” Gillett shares.

Dr. Colon and Gillett also built part of the talk around their shared history together. “Since Dr. Dre and I have been working together for years helping people become healthier and happier, we were able to share the stories of people we have been able to help in the past,” Gillett says. “It is best to have the two, because there are some things a personal trainer cannot help a client with if they never see their client’s blood work and see what physiological factors may be having adverse effect on the client’s health. And a doctor can tell

someone that they need to workout and eat right, but they don’t have the time or expertise to help like a fitness professional would.”

Research on women’s health started around the 1980s, so there is still a lot to learn. Because of this, much of the information out there is tailored to men’s health—which differs drastically from women’s. “We are going to be learning so much more about women’s bodies and how to take better care of ourselves as more and more research comes out, which is very exciting,” Gillett notes.

Following the discussion, NBCC instructor Ashlyn Zarate led a yoga session for members in attendance. “She did a fabulous job … [and] left all of us feeling empowered … [and] more at peace,” Gillett adds. “The best pose of the day was goddess pose, naturally.”

Lunch and snacks were provided during the seminar, courtesy of the NBCC Food and Beverage team. Guests dined on healthy dishes like chicken skewers, salad, spicy hummus with vegetables, fruit, yogurt parfaits and energy balls, with water, tea and coffee offered as well. Overall, the first Women’s Health Seminar was a hit, with Gillett noting that she received high praise from the attendees. “They learned a lot and felt inspired and more empowered to live a healthier, more optimized life. Meaning if you eat well, workout well, recover well and get treated well—by a doctor, especially one that focuses on preventive [medicine] compared to problem solving—you will feel more energy, more strength, more resilience [and] more joy, even as we age.”

The majority of the ladies who attended the event knew each other in advance thanks to the close-knit community that the NBCC Fitness Center has cultivated. “It felt like close friends coming together to have a party—a party filled with peaceful yoga and learning about our bodies,” Gillett says.

This year’s H.E.R. Summit By Hoag will take place on Aug. 28 at VEA Newport Beach with a keynote talk from Ally Love, who is the CEO of Love Squad, on-air contributor for the “Today” show, and host of the Brooklyn Nets and Netflix’s “Dance 100.” Get tickets at hoaghospitalfoundation.org, and keep an eye out for future workshops at NBCC.

Behind the Bar

BARTENDER LILIA JIMENEZ HAS BEEN SERVING UP COCKTAILS AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB AND PUTTING A SMILE ON MEMBERS’ FACES FOR 25 YEARS.

Anyone who frequents a bar, whether to sip soda or sample a lineup of craft cocktails, appreciates a friendly face behind the counter. At Newport Beach Country Club, it doesn’t get any friendlier than Lilia Jimenez.

The longtime bartender has made a name for herself at the club, with Katherine Feehan, director of member relations, revealing how popular she is around the property. “She’s very well-known. The members love her,” she says.

The feeling is mutual, with Jimenez having worked at the property for 25 years. Throughout her time at the club, she has

“I enjoy everything: the drinks, making my members happy, the place. I just say I’m very lucky,” Jimenez says, adding that she always loves having “the best office” with views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean from the bar.

In addition to cleaning and stocking the bar, Jimenez’s creates and prepares cocktails for members.

“I think, at this point, every single one is my favorite [to make] because the members love it,” she reveals. “They love what I do.”
