With a push of a button, X-Mode takes control of the engine, transmission, AWD, brakes, and other components to safely navigate through bad roads, and slippery surfaces for maximum confidence. 1 Power Rear Gate* You’ll do enough reaching, pulling and lifting when you’re out there riding, climbing and living. The power rear gate will take some of the work out of loading. Use the switch on the instrument panel, the gate or the key fob and it opens or closes automatically.
2 Side Sill The side sills have been designed to be low as possible yet resist collecting dirt to keep your Forester looking clean. So they help shoes and clothes keep from collecting dirt as the family gets in and out on all the adventures you’ll be having.

For the first time, high-response valves for the rear shock absorber have been adopted to maximise stability and provide increased responsiveness. And for the DIT model, a rear support sub-frame has been added for a more rigid base to mount the rear suspension. Working together they make the rear of the Forester feel more controlled and the steering more responsive.
A firmer front suspension gives the Forester a positive balance between ride comfort and handling over a variety of surfaces. For DIT models, the front suspension is further stiffened with higher spring rates to enhance roll control and improve response. The new friction-control oil seals, guide bushings and hydraulic fluid on the struts also work together to smoothen out minor vibrations during initial acceleration.

Few other SUVs drive with the level of confidence and responsiveness of the Forester, and the main reason for this lies beneath the surface—the SUBARU BOXER engine. Its horizontally opposed configuration places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than other engine types. This gives the engine, and therefore the overall vehicle, a lower centre of gravity and better sense of balance. Further, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently counteract each other, naturally helping to reduce vibration.

Paddle shifters are mounted on the steering wheel for fingertip control, giving you the power to select the gear ratio of the Lineartronic CVT that best suits your driving situation. They also provide petrol models with a six-step manual mode and diesel models with a seven-speed manual mode for quick response on demand. The result is a sharper and sportier driving experience.
The Forester achieves inspiring levels of response and efficiency with Lineartronic. By keeping the engine running in its optimal rev range and preserving the momentum that’s often lost during a gear shift, this unique transmission dramatically maximises fuel efficiency. New shift controls keep the ride light, fluid and responsive, with a more direct feel of the SUBARU BOXER engine. The Lineartronic in 2.0D and 2.0XT also handles the higher-torque output with less mechanical noise for a smoother, quieter drive. The step-less and step- shifting links facilitate confident power delivery upon acceleration. Lineartronic is also longitudinally paired with an active torque split AWD system that responds to traction conditions by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear.

The stable, responsive handling of its Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive can enhance control in virtually any weather conditions. And the SUBARU BOXER engine enhances this security, thanks to its lower centre of gravity, creating an even closer connection to the road. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and generously sized brakes endow it with athletic reflexes, whilst fluid-filled mounts suppress excessive vibration, encouraging more confidence behind the wheel.
Braking System The standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminium rear calipers and a strong, reassuring brake feel. The Antilock Braking System (ABS) includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, to reapportion front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is loaded. To ensure maximum braking during an emergency, the Forester features both Brake Assist and Brake Override. There’s also Subaru Hill Holder that helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper grade, by applying the electronic parking brake and automatically releasing it once you’re underway. The DIT model adds larger 17-inch ventilated discs in front and 16-inch ventilated discs for the rear, further enhancing the overall driving performance over many surfaces you may encounter.
Vehicle Dynamics Control Standard on every Forester, the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) monitors and analyses if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course via an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability whilst cornering or avoiding an obstacle, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.

Seats, Seatbelts and SRS* Airbags
Pedestrian Protection
The Forester is designed to protect its occupants with a series of advanced systems and features, balancing rigid strength with controlled deformation in key areas to better manage impact forces. Systematically placed airbags, whiplash-reducing front seats, retracting pedals and 3-point seatbelts are all part of providing safety to the occupants directly.
Standard on Forester are front SRS* airbags, plus front-side, curtain SRS* airbags and knee SRS* airbags. Height-adjustable front seatbelts feature pretensioners to hold passengers firmly in place, and load limiters that ease peak forces to the chest. In a rear collision, front seats utilise rigid frames, firm headrests and such details as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the chance of whiplash.
Shock-absorbing space within the vehicle helps reduce pedestrian injury, as do an energy-absorbing front bumper with a specially designed area around the windshield wipers. And in order to provide protection in the head zone, a split-type construction in the front has been implemented.
