Target Self-Checkout Unexpected item in bagging area

UniďŹ ed payment processing - no need to use two separate machines to process one payment

While attempting to increase convenience, self-checkout systems have been a frustration for many customers

The single-height table creates a linear path for the customer. Lifting is also reduced when returning to cart

A limited-item self checkout system was most appropriate to ďŹ t with Target’s client base

A smaller table that ďŹ ts fewer items allows more units to be installed, preventing long queues

Paper-bag storage is below and a bag-rack for those that bring their own bags, or for the motion impaired

Ergonomic and psychological considerations.

What began as a wall mounted coffee maker, then a portable do-anything machine, ended up turning tea making on its head.

However, a kettle that does hand stands can’t spill everywhere and sealing proved difďŹ cult. Early models integrated a handle-and-locking solution into the lid but there was no resolution; it was too complex. A simpler mechanism was the most elegant solution.

Tea is the most enjoyed beverage behind water, and the electric kettle is becoming a mainstay in kitchens, why not get the one appliance that can manage both?

Timothy Harris

Visually differentiated contact points on the lid separate the tea compartment from the pour spout

This kettles symmetric form, coupled with clever cord management in the base, allow it to sit ush against any wall

Initial research indicated the most important factors are rider comfort, rider safety, and available storage. After throwing everything at the wall, what stuck was a storage solution. Attaching cleanly to the frame triangle proved to be difďŹ cult, however.

Early prototypes suffered from various physical impossibilities. Either the fabric would bunch up making it unsightly, or the pockets wouldn’t be secure. Combining two early ideas, a bag and the wrap, solved the problem by distributing force in different directions.

Focusing on new prototyping methods, our first task was a scavenger hunt. Various items were combined to create a function

Two preliminary prototypes, a glowing lanyard and an accessory-flash, are combined to find a final direction

Round two of sketches: determining form and user interaction

Dozens of small models were made to work out details and ďŹ nd a form that was playful and easy to use

Result: A passively powered phone accessory that will improve poorly-lit self-shots (selfies). This course compounded the necessity of “prototype early, prototype often,” and proper procedure. While daunting at first, the milling experience will prove invaluable for future model making. The sliding switch activates an internal LED to illuminate your face in dark environments.
