WAKEFIELD PORTFOLIO
PORTFOLIO BRIEF DEMONSTRATING A WORKING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH ACADEMIC STUDIES AND REAL WORK EXPERIENCE, THIS PORTFOLIO SHOWS MY VERSATILITY AND FORTITUDE IN THE GRAPHIC DESIGN REALM.
This portfolio brief demonstrates and shows the creative process for a multitude of my projects, ranging from actual government publications, to an intense academic study at the Art Institute of Pittsburg Online. In this portfolio you will see a variety of work completed over a six-year period in which my journey as a designer began. Many of the projects show a multitude of knowledge learned in academic study and workrelated designs showing a knowledge in a variety of design programs.

PUBLICATIONS An important aspect I establish with any publication is communication — communication and feedback from the client about they want to to see in a product, versus what I hope they want to see. Even for my academic studies, I had to research for ways to get the answer to communicate effectively on behalf of the client. For the real publications, it was more about exceeding their standards and explaining why your design works for them. For real-world publications, I had to adhere to strict branding guidelines before actual publications were published. My experience with guidelines has made designing much easier because there is a standard already set. Using various Adobe programs, I was able to do “extraordinary things” that the clients were very pleased with in their terms. In the end, it is all about customer satisfaction and professionalism that sets you apart from the rest.

M83
Using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop to create a client brief and CD layout for the band M83.
Using a high profile band such as M83 was the perfect opportunity to not only demonstrate harmony between different typefaces, it was also an opportunity to use my photography skills to create a truly original product through and through. Some obstacles I tackled with the project were creating a design that was minimalist but still felt full of design. I accomplished this through the use of photography and typography.

TRADITIONAL Traditional forms of art have been a problem area for me because I expect perfection the first time. I see great artist producing amazing things with what seems to be a minimum effort. The pieces I created took a lot of times, a lot of wasted materials, but the end results were a progression of the techniques I learned. Combining mediums coupled with proper technique, although frustrating at times, was useful in creating effective pieces. Projects ranging from perspective to abstraction demonstrates a knowledge of these art forms.

the house
A two-point perspective piece created in various pencil grades.
Learning two-point perspective was actually a therapeutic process for me. I actually wanted to really take my time to figure the processes involved with creating pieces like this. While I’m no Da Vinci, I found my style to be very scratchy and freeform, creating my own style vice someone else’s. I have a very heavy hand and I used that to my advantage.

POSTERS Posters demonstrate a culmination of techniques and principles of art used across the many projects I’ve done. They demonstrate a visual hierarchy in different ways. For example, typography can be the main center of visual interest versus a large graphic or picture. Using various techniques I was able to draw in the viewers eyes using multiple techniques taught through academic study. Using programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign was not only useful for the creation of these projects, but were also valuable assets as they all work together synonymously with their recognizable user interfaces.

BTBAM
Using typography as a means for design and visual hierarchy.
While I did not create the typeface, one of the tasks was to use different typefaces to work together. I’m a huge fan of the basics; sans serif, clean lettering. My Navy career in design has been to follow this specific rule for layout in a news publication; title is always sans serif, body copy is serif. Academic study has taught me that this rule doesn’t have to be true through every project. So I broke my Navy training and created something opposite, and the results were amazing.
