The Iliad (/ˈɪliəd/;[1] Ancient Greek: Ἰλιάς Ilias, pronounced [iː.li.ás] in Classical Attic; sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, so that when it reaches an end, the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War.

THE ILIAD Hand-sketched in Adobe Illustrator — June 26, 2015 I created this font based of the epic tale called, The Iliad. After many renditions of various fonts, I chose a serif font because it represents the story and the time it was written. During the period of this story, it was important to capture all elements of it’s raw power through typeface.

Greco-Roman, Lubed-Up Wrestling | Concept Font created by Timmy Wakefield I absolutely have an appreciation for typography. I’ve always had a keen eye for discerning what typefaces look good and why others look bad. Figuring out how to design a font is something I’ve always wanted to tackle. This class gave me the insight and instruction on how to create my font. I chose to Homer’s The Iliad because the GreekRoman typography can be seen pretty much everywhere in today’s modern font cycle. For example, Time New Roman, Myriad Pro and a plethora of other typefaces are influenced by this era of typography. Designing was a new challenge for me. I felt like the class lacked the actual knowledge of typeface design so I had to do some third party research. I wanted my proportion, design, character spacing and just an overall consistent them with my font. I stumbled across a lot of information that was helpful and put this class into perspective. My design changed from one font to another because I saw a similar one that I was creating. My goal was to create something unique and I didn’t want to be tempted to cheat. I completely revamped my typeface to maintain academic integrity. The design was hand-sketched in marker then traced in Illustrator.

Overall, i enjoyed exploring and creating my very own font. It was challenging which made all the more rewarding. I’ve already used my font in another class and that project looks great. As far as advice goes for future students or designers, I’d say do research. A lot goes into this art form and one single fault could ruin an entire set of the font.
