Each player has nine markers (coins, rocks, beans or whatever they would like as long as their markers are different. The object of the game is to make rows of 3 markers on a line, and to prevent your opponent from doing the same! When all the pieces have been placed on the board, the players may begin to move their markers. Players take turns sliding their markers along the lines one point at a time to make new rows of 3. Every time a player makes a row of 3, they get to take one of their opponent’s markers off of the board.
Colonial Hopscotch Draw out a Colonial version and play this classic game! Hubbub Materials: Beans, spray painted or marked on one side, Put the beans into a small bowl. Take turns bumping the bowl on the ground 3 times while chanting ‘hub hub hub” to shake up the beans. At the end of each turn, players count how many beans colored side up they have. Whoever has the most at the end of the game wins.
COLONIAL JOHNNY CAKES RECIPE Ingredients: 1 cup yellow cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup milk
Mix the cornmeal and salt. Add the boiling water, stirring until smooth. Add the milk. Stir well. Grease a heavy, 12-inch frying pan. Set over medium-low heat. Drop teaspoons of the batter onto the pan. Cook until golden, about five minutes. Turn the cakes carefully with a metal spatula. Cook the other side five minutes. Serve the cakes hot with butter and maple syrup.
AUTHENTIC COLONIAL RECIPE FOR APPLE BUTTER Ingredients: 4lbs. apples, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves Core and quarter unpeeled apples; chop or put in blender with water and vinegar. Cook in a saucepan over low heat until the mixture gets thick and turns brown. Stir occasionally. This will take 2-3 hours. Add sugar and spices and cook for 1/2 hour more. Refrigerate, then spread on toast or muffins.
Candied Orange Peels Ingredients: 5-6 thick skinned Oranges, 2 Cups Sugar, plus some for dusting, 1 Cup Water, 2 Tablespoons Salt Peel the oranges, removing as much of the pith as possible. Soak in salt water for 10 minutes, rinse well. Stew the peels in fresh water for 15 minutes and drain. Repeat stewing process. Place the peels in the stewpan once more, add the sugar & water and simmer until peels are tender. Remove peels and dry in a sieve for 10-15 minutes. Coat in granulated sugar.
