The International Award for Young People (IAYP): The IAYP programme is a real adventure. It does not matter who you are or where you are from. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and looking to have new experiences, discover new talents, challenge yourself and meet loads of people just like you. You can complete your IAYP programme at three levels: • Bronze (Grade 9) • Silver (Grade 10) • Gold (Grade 11) You achieve an Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections: • • • • •
Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community Physical: Improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities Skills: Developing practical and social skills and personal interests Expedition: Planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey + Residential Project: At Gold level only, which involves working and staying away from home doing a shared activity
Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. You are being recognized for doing things you want to do (and may even be doing already). Doing your IAYP really does give you the skills you need for life and work. Moreover, you will make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. Above all, it's great fun! What is involved in the IAYP? There are three separate, progressive levels of the programme, which lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold IAYP Award. The main differences between them are the minimum length of time required to complete each level, the degree of challenge and the minimum age at which participant can start. Participants choose an activity they enjoy and want to do for each section. It is important that when participant are making choices that IAYP leaders are consulted to ensure that the activity undertaken is suitable for the section. This can be an entirely new activity or an activity in which they are already involved. A list of suitable activities for each section is available at https://www.iayp.org - Alternatively this information can be found on the school’s website. The Process of completing the award: Participants choose an activity for the completion of each Section. An Assessor (usually a teacher) knowledgeable in the chosen activity will check the young persons’ progress against targets that the pupil has set for themselves. The IAYP Award Leader must approve the choice of Assessor before the activity is undertaken. Typically, Assessors should not be family members. To achieve the award, every activity undertaken must be successfully completed and assessed. The young person meets with the Assessor to discuss and record their experiences. These discussions should focus on how they have developed and reached the goals set at the start of the activity. The participant should record their activities in their IAYP Diary and on completion, they will enter the details into their IAYP record book. This is kept by the IAYP Award Leaders and given to the participant as a permanent record of their achievements along with their completion badge and certificate. Students who complete their Bronze and Silver IAYP awards within the academic year will be presented with their certificates and badges of achievement a school assembly. Gold Award achievers will be presented with their awards at a special ceremony conducted in the school where a notable public figure will present their awards.

Plan and train to complete a 2 day, 1 night expedition

All participants must undertake a further 3 months in the Volunteering, Physical or Skills section. The Bronze level of the IAYP award is undertaken by students in Grade 9. All students will be able to collect evidence for their volunteering, physical and skill sections from the September when they register. Students will be expected to attend the training days for Bronze level IAYP. This day will cover the basics of route planning and camp craft. Failure to attend the training day will mean students cannot complete their expedition. In addition, students wishing to be taken out on expedition must have completed a major portion of their volunteering, physical and skill sections. The evidence for these sections will need to be entered into their IAYP Record Books and Diaries before being signed off by an IAYP Award Leader prior to the practice expedition. All groups will need to sign up to give a presentation in the designated week following their expedition. General deadlines: September 1st Week: Commencement of the programme. April 1st week: All participants must have completed the requirements of the award and submitted the Record Book for verification to the IAYP Coordinators. May 4th week: Award Issued

Silver Award: Total duration of the programme: 6 months for Bronze Award holders - 12 months for direct entrants Volunteering Physical Skills Expedition 6 months

Direct entrants must undertake a further 6 months in the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. The Silver level award of the IAYP is undertaken by students in Grade 10 and will be expected to complete the volunteering, physical and skill sections as above in their IAYP Diaries. All sections must have completed and signed off by an IAYP Award leader before students will be allowed to attend the assessed expedition. As a part of this section all groups will need to give a presentation following their expedition. General deadlines: September 1st Week: Commencement of the programme. April 1st week: All participants must have completed the requirements of the award and submitted the Record Book for verification to the IAYP Award Leaders. May 4th week: Award Issued Note: Direct entrants (Those joining having not completed their Bronze level IAYP) will continue the programme until September (next year) before submitting their record books for the award.

Gold Award: Total duration of the programme: 12 months for Silver Award holders. 18 months for direct entrants. Volunteering Physical Activity Skills Expedition Residential Project (Service) 12 months
One section for 12 months and the other section for 6 months
Plan and train to complete a 3 night, 4 day expedition
Undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights.
Direct entrants must undertake a further 6 months in either the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. The coveted Gold IAYP is open to all students of Grade 11. The Gold programme can also be used to cover requirements of the IB CAS (service & residential project) and earn the prestigious Gold Award by the end of it. General deadlines: September 1st week: Commencement of the programme. April 1st week: Residential Project & Expedition during the spring break December 1st week: All participants must have completed the requirements of the award and submitted the Record Book for verification to the IAYP Award Leaders. March 1st week: Award Issued Note: Direct entrants (Those joining having not completed their Bronze and/or Silver level IAYP) will continue the programme for an additional 6 months before submitting their record books for award.

Expeditions: The expedition section of the IAYP award is the one that students remember most fondly. At TISB participants complete this requirement on one of our school-organized treks. Please note that the Expedition is a mandatory part of the award and students who are subscribing for the IAYP programme must undertake the expedition relevant to their respective award. Category
