INTRODUC TION 1

The outstanding amount of protests recently caught my attention, as they portray a message of hating on humans for mistreating animals. For hundreds of years animals and humans haven’t been equal and we’ve always chosen to use them for food and fashion. So why now?

For this issue I wanted to look into the exposure of animals and how we mistreat them; which is wrong yet seen as acceptable because we have always done it. Many vegans stand in some gruesome protests fighting for animal rights over their own, defiantly brave nonetheless. Many animals are seen as equal to us, we will love them like we love a family member yet can be seen as beneath us because we have to take care of them. They have no voice or

say so we take it upon ourselves to choose what happens to them, however they do have the ability to show us when they are suffering and yet we carry on anyway. In addition we’ve got interviews with a selection of people dipping into their views and opinions of wearing animals as fashion and the controversy with doing that, when people are vegetarian. Is it wrong that we are at the top of the food chain acting like animals or is it just some people’s conciseness feeling guilty that makes it seem wrong? After all animals kill animals in order to survive and whilst we may have done this for the same reasons hundreds of years ago, is it time for us to stop? #RiseoftheVegetarians

Trend: Nude Alert All nude is now actually a thing. Yes, you heard right. The ‘Yeezy Season’ sensation has taken the world by storm and now even your dog’s brothers owner probably owns a nude item. Blowing up social media through #instagrambaddies and the #girlsonfleek the nude trend is now totally mainstream and hitting all the shops and online stores. The key look set up for this trend is the

tight-fitting leggings and crops but also incorporating oversized items such as jackets and coats. Kanye West’s fashion world contribution has sent it into a frenzy. Yeezy Season 3 (yep that one with the rips) being the key collection with the rips being replicated in stores and online brands. This S/S 2016 ready to wear collection created by Olivier Rousteing for Balmain is a clear indication of how on trend the nude look is.

You could easily say that using fur has always been an issue. Social uproar on whether it’s fair on the animal, whether it’s causing suffering and whether it’s actually necessary. Nowadays using fur isn’t an essential for day-to-day living but still to this day, people make exceptions to the likes of cavemen and inuits. For them it’s either kill in order to survive or die. People feel so strongly about whether it’s fair to kill animals purely for their fur, even more so the species that are endangered but so many continue to eat meat. Just because the animal perhaps has less beauty, or isn’t endangered does that mean that animal

12 has less worth? Thousands of chickens are bred to feed humans but we don’t consider them, they seem to have less value due to the rate of production. Let’s be honest, we don’t really need meat to survive we just enjoy it. But a life is a life? Right?

Dazed & Exposed

Looking back at cavemen and inuits currently, we understand that they have to do what they have to do to survive, it’s survival of the fittest. The Oscar winning Leonardo DiCaprio recently stared in The Revenant which was a huge success set in 1823, he was put in the position of having to do what he had to do in order to survive. Interestingly, DiCaprio has been a vegetarian since 1992. He went to excessive lengths in this film and ate a raw Bison Liver. He also climbed inside of a horse once all of the insides had been removed. Someone so against the negligence of animals and who will not eat meat on a daily basis pushed himself to do things that are completely against his morals and what he believes in. And what for? An Oscar and A hefty pay out. Keeping things ethical and sustainable is growing in popularity within the fashion industry. So many brands are trying to promote recycling and making the most of your clothes but unfortunately clothes are still ending up in landfill which is having an impact on the world that we live in. Faux fur is very ‘in’ right now. Everyone wants a bit of replica fur to strut around in at winter time. However, come summer people will be throwing out that old fur and bringing out the shorts. What happens to that faux fur? It ends up in landfill with everything else that gets thrown away. Using real fur, is much more sustainable. Fur is a sign of wealth, with big names like Kanye West regularly sporting the material. Fur often ends up in vintage shops and is used over and over again. It’s valued and appreciated. Even so, if it does end up being thrown away, it doesn’t have all the nasty synthetic qualities so will naturally decompose over time.

What if it was the other way round? What if we put humans in the animal’s place? Would you wear a beautiful jacket if you knew it was made out of human skin? It suddenly doesn’t seem so

appealing and it probably wouldn’t catch on. Any harm or mistreatment of humans makes the news and takes the limelight. Take a monumental part of history, The Holocaust. Thousands of innocent people were taken from their homes, used for experimentation, slave labour, kept in a poor way and killed. Their valuables were collected, parts of them. Hair, jewellery, shoes and clothes, everything that made up who they were was taken. Their identity was lost. Thousands were exposed as people that were not themselves and their pride was taken. A prime example of dehumanisation. The sad thing is that this is exactly what we do to animals just for the sake of beauty. We expose animals and take away what makes them special. We strip their identity and make them seem like nothing but a resource. Human’s are given a sense of power and control over animals. The Zimbardo experiment was one that really triggered an interesting point of focus. Put a group of people in a constructed prison, half prisoners and half guards. Watch the sudden sense of power take over who they are. The guards made the prisoners feel like nothing but an object. The aim was to humiliate and drive the prisoners to a point where they didn’t want to exist, making them feel worthless. Swapping this over and making it a human focus provokes a much wider audience. The idea of treating humans the same way that we treat animals on a daily basis, all for fashion rather than survival is almost not comprehendible. Let’s expose you from everything that makes up you, make you face vulnerability and despair.

5 Q&As Exposed chose to have encounters with people who had street style inspiration to the magazine. To have a closer look into their opinions and views on exposing and using animals for our own benefits; or whether people do actually think about it and go against other people’s views and actions.

19

What are your opinions on wearing fur? ER: Um, I am against wearing new fur, however vintage stuff is obviously like been reused, that I am ok with. Like vintage leather jackets, vintage fur and so on I’m okay with to a point. So you said you were a vegetarian, is there any particular reasons why? ER: For me, it was more of a health thing when I first started, then it started to get more ethical reasons afterwards, like the way it’s is farmed etc etc. But more for me it was health originally, so like the health benefits of it. What would you say your style is? ER: Uh style, I don’t know it is like a mixture of sort of street wear with a modern heritage, which is like modern heritage brands like ‘Armi’ and French work wear look, so I’d say it is probably a mixture of that and street wear. So I wear the sort of tailored trousers, stripe tops etc. with like the street wear sort of style. I

think that sort of sums it up although it changes day to day. What’s your favourite animal? ER: My favourite animal is uh, the duck billed platypus, so yeah. So what are your opinions on wearing real fur, fur or faux fur? RT:Well I’m a vegetarian, I don’t believe in wearing real fur, so I am drawn towards fake fur So is that the same with leather as well? Yes same as leather, I wear fake leather and fake fur, I don’t believe in wearing real fur, just because I don’t believe in killing animals just for the clothes How would you describe your street style or style in general? RT: I am a bit edgy, so I don’t have a particular style, some days I’ll come in looking like this and then some days I’ll come in girly with a dress on, so I don’t really have a particular style as I mix it up.

comparison to fake leather and fur? CP: I’m not completely against real fur and leather, but prefer to go for fake fur so I know it hasn’t harmed any animals, also it is really expensive and looks just the same so yeah. So, what are your opinions on wearing fur, fake fur and in general? KS: I don’t really mind, either; because it’s just people wearing it and the animals are already killed, so it’s silly when people
