Welcome to the Spring season at the RNCM An exciting outward-facing term where RNCM Live takes to the road far more than ever before, and where partnerships and collaborations foster, grow and thrive.
We are Chamber Music
Our Chamber Music Festival goes to the city centre (10-12 Jan) using Manchester Cathedral as our hub, and featuring the Academy of Ancient Music, the Talich Quartet and The Band of Instruments together with our staff and students, to explore ‘The Art of Bach’. Our faithful lunchtime concert followers need not worry about the temporary closure of our Concert Hall. These concerts will be as frequent, diverse and delightful as ever, in fantastic venues such as the Holden Art Gallery, St Ann’s Church and the Martin Harris Centre, featuring the RNCM Chamber Ensemble with Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, as well as a feast of other ensembles: Harp, Saxophone, Percussion and Guitar, and our String and Wind Orchestras. Exquisite Manchester Chamber Concerts Society programming runs across the Spring (27 Jan, 24 Feb, 31 Mar) and Spotlights spice up our programme, giving everyone a glimpse into what our students are up to, this year, for the first time, experimenting with triple-bill shows (17 Jan).
Again in Manchester Cathedral, we will be taking the magic and mystery of Orpheus with Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice (28 Mar), which will also be performed alongside his witty The Drunkard Cured (L’ivrogne corrigé) in our exclusive double-bill in the intimacy of our Studio Theatre (18, 20, 22 and 27 Mar). Opera Scenes are back (21, 24, 28 and 31 Jan), as entertaining as ever. Yet another exciting venture is the one with the Royal Exchange Theatre for an extra-indulgent Day of Song (27 Apr) where we will be taking you with us through the lush atmosphere of the Secession and travelling from country to country by song throughout the day. We are also thrilled to welcome YCAT again for an evening of Lieder (10 Mar).

Our ever popular Festival of Brass (26 Jan) kicks off at The Bridgewater Hall, celebrating the golden age for brass band music featuring our own RNCM students (both Senior as well as Junior) and our guest bands: Fairey, Brighouse and Rastrick, Black Dyke and Foden’s.
Our ever-growing partnership with Serious shows exciting collaborations coming up with the fabulous Penguin Cafe (21 Feb) and the astonishing Naturally 7 (28 Feb) just coming out of their tour with Michael Bublé. Tord Gustavsen Ensemble return (15 Mar) showcasing their new ECM release Extended Circle. Our very own Big Band takes to the stage, this time featuring Tim Garland and the music of Chick Corea (22 Mar).

Back at The Bridgewater Hall (26 Mar), we perform two monumental works: Messiaen’s blistering Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum and Tippett’s masterpiece in its brand new edition: A Child of Our Time. Manchester Cathedral’s beautiful setting hosts our delicate yet exuberant concert given by the RNCM Chamber Orchestra (30 Jan). A rich array of recitals by our RNCM International Artist Diploma students across the coming months includes the Zelkova Quartet (14 Jan), pianist Yasmin Rowe (24 Jan), bassoonist Alejandra Rojas (31 Jan), cellist Mikhail Nemtsov (7 Feb) and flautist Helen Wilson (14 Feb). The Holy Name Church will also be home to two of our performances this year, including a superb programme with our Chamber Choir (26 Feb). No RNCM Live programme is complete without our extraordinary Masterclass series: John Harle (28 Jan), Frans Helmerson (7 Feb) and Olaf Bär (11 Feb).

We are Opera and Song
We are thrilled to be collaborating with Icebreaker again, this year featuring the spectacle that is Kraftwerk (6 Feb). For the first time ever, FutureEverything and RNCM team up to create the most exciting sonic art festival to date to come to the RNCM, with live installations, mirrors, structures, choral performances, lasers, optics, animation, screens, illusions and anything that would trigger anyone’s imagination (29 Mar–1 Apr). Our student composers and conductors are, as ever, crucial to our remit, with Brand New Orchestra (23 Jan) and our Composers Concert at the end of term (27 Mar). We also welcome Manchester Camerata for a Composers Project (21 Jan). A highlight of the Spring programme is the John McCabe festival (15 and 16 Feb), featuring his entire oeuvres for piano, alongside a significant overview of his chamber music, culminating in the special Sunday evening concert with the Kreutzer Quartet, Aaron Shorr and Linda Merrick.
We are Popular Music Following its success at the Royal Albert Hall and here at the RNCM last term, the RNCM Session Orchestra returns with an exciting eclectic programme (25 Apr). Staff-led Vulgar Display give us their take on extreme metal (12 Feb).
We are Folk and World Fusing Latin American and traditional Celtic folk, Salsa Celtica appear on the RNCM stage (7 Mar), followed by loud, proud acoustic Bellowhead–founding members, Spiers & Boden on their last tour as a duo (20 Mar), while the award-winning folk band Melrose Quartet perform in the Carole Nash Recital Room (28 Mar). Junior RNCM takes pride of place in an Open Day (8 Feb) as well as in its eagerly awaited Formal Concert (1 Mar). We reach out to more young people with our Youth Perform project, this time with the biggest musical hit in Berlin of the 1920s with the Brecht/Weill collaboration, The Threepenny Opera (23–26 Apr). I must thank my Performance and Programming team, all the Heads of Schools and Course Leaders and Directors as well as our partners and funders for their invaluable input and support to create this colourful programme, always ensuring the student experience is at the heart of everything we do.

THE ART OF BACH
RNCM CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL This year’s RNCM Chamber Music Festival is devoted to the music of one of the most influential composers of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach. For the first time ever, we bring the Festival to the centre of Manchester, with concerts taking place in Manchester Cathedral and St Ann’s Church, religious buildings akin to those in which Bach’s music itself would have first been heard. The Art of Fugue is at the very heart of this year’s Festival and we present all six Brandenburg Concertos as well as featuring music by Bach’s extraordinary extended family. Yasmin Rowe performs the first of four solo recitals this term by students on our International Artist Diploma (IAD) course. Yasmin is the winner of many competitions including the EPTA UK and Moray International Piano Competitions. Our second IAD recital features Venezuelan bassoonist Alejandro Rojas. Alejandra was born in Caracas and from an early age was involved in El Sistema, going on to attend the Simón Bolívar Conservatory. In 2008, she was part of the bassoon section for the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra European Tour conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. After meeting Stefano Canuti at a woodwind festival in Caracas, Alejandra decided to move to Spain to study with him, winning a scholarship to the Aragón Superior Conservatory in Zaragoza. Icebreaker performs a reworking of Kraftwerk’s music by J Peter Schwalm, with film by Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish Following their highly successful Apollo tour that visited the RNCM in 2010, Icebreaker are turning their focus on another contemporary icon - Kraftwerk. Since their formation in 1970 the German group’s output has revolutionised music and influenced scores of musicians. For this project, composer, producer and soundscapist J Peter Schwalm re-imagines tracks from a range of Kraftwerk albums to show off the group’s many different sounds - from early acoustic tracks to the by now iconic synthesised tunes. Visual artists Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish create a new video work for this piece. A purposeful departure from the hightech graphics of the current Kraftwerk shows, Clements and Cornish re-present Kraftwerk’s vision in the language of an earlier era of avant garde film that wondered in the new aesthetics of technological and industrial innovation. A nostalgic vision of a ‘future’ now passed, and a modern reworking of a lost utopian dream. Vulgar Display Part 2: You Suffer
Following 2012’s Tournament Roadkill RNCM appearance, new music-cum-extreme metal ensemble Vulgar Display returns for a further bout of musical transgression. The perceived gentility and sophistication of a classical piano trio is once again pitted against the brutality of heavily distorted, down-tuned electric guitar and percussion battery with a view to emphasising their incompatibility and not overcoming it. Several of the North West’s leading composers have written new works especially for the event, including Gary Carpenter, Larry Goves, Mauricio Pauly and Nina Whiteman.
A two-day festival celebrating the 75th birthday of one of Britain’s most respected composers. John McCabe’s life is a musical journey which is vibrant, optimistic, explosive; his orchestrations a vivid and vast palette of colours and timbres; and his rhythms exciting, restless and striking. His paintbrush then portrays beautiful broad melodies, lyricism and a distinct harmonic language. All concerts will be introduced by Professor George Odam, the author of the book Landscapes of the Mind, and we are lucky that this festival takes place in the presence of the composer himself.

Three of the Young Classical Artists Trust’s rising stars join forces for the second in our 2013/4 series of YCAT concerts. The trio will perform Schumann’s Five Lieder, songs set to poems by Hans Christian Andersen which Schumann dedicated to the poet, plus the composer’s last ever work for solo voice, some of the most poignant music based on the subject of Mary Queen of Scots.
This competitive award, open to all RNCM violinists, sees finalists present a movement from a classical sonata, two pieces by Fritz Kreisler and an orchestral solo. This reflects the repertoire performed by violinist Norman George, whose friends have donated this prize in his memory. This evening’s adjudicator is the eminent recitalist, chamber musician and Permanent Guest Leader with the Hallé, violinist Paul Barritt.

is lost – but then touched by his lament, Amore restores Euridice to life and the opera ends in celebration. The theme of the underworld, gods, demons and furies is also prevalent in The Drunkard Cured (L’ivrogne corrigé) which completes this Gluck double-bill. The drunkard Mathurin wants his niece Colette to marry his drinking partner Lucas. But Colette is in love with Cléon and together with Mathurin’s wife Mathurine, they devise a plot to scupper these plans. They disguise themselves as Pluto and two furies (wearing masks), so that when Mathurin and Lucas awaken from their drunken stupor, they believe they are in hell. Cléon, in the role of Pluto, offers Mathurin clemency if he
gives up the drink and allows his niece to marry Cléon. When Mathurin has signed the marriage contract, they remove their masks. Lucas on the other hand, has made no promises and resumes his habitual ways. This comedy was written just two years before the advent of Orfeo and despite its light-hearted tone, the work includes strong intimations of the masterpiece that was to follow. Orfeo ed Euridice will be sung in Italian with English surtitles. The Drunkard Cured will be performed in Roger Hamilton's brand new English translation. Our Spring opera promises a very different experience when we present a fully-staged Gluck double-bill in the intimate setting of the RNCM Studio Theatre. Orfeo ed Euridice is probably the composer’s most exhilarating work, with eruptions of emotion that gain potency from the poise with which they are expressed. Orfeo is mourning the death of his wife Euridice. Zeus is so struck by his grief that he allows him to reclaim her from Hades. If, through the power of music, he can persuade Pluto to release her, he may guide her back to Earth, but he must not look upon her until they have crossed back into the land of the living. Orfeo succeeds in his task until Euridice, unable to understand his strange behaviour, claims she would rather be dead than be so spurned by him. He turns to look at her and she

Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum (I Await the Resurrection of the Dead) has an overriding feeling of mystery with its dramatic bursts of sound and silence being applied in both abstract blocks and delicate touches of colour. Following the interval, we enter Tippett’s powerful message of hope and optimism against war and oppression with his ‘oratorio of contemplation’, A Child of Our Time.
As Europe slipped towards fascism, Michael Tippett felt the urge to protest in music – to show solidarity with those downtrodden by poverty and prejudice. A Child of Our Time was the composer’s response to the infamous Kristallnacht pogrom against the Jews in 1938 and was his first major statement as an artist.

Taking Bach’s Passions and Handel’s Messiah as his models, Tippett ended each of his sections with his own arrangements of African American spirituals, heightening the intensity of the piece, tonight performed by the RNCM Symphony Chorus and soloists. ‘The world turns on its dark side’ proclaims the opening movement of Tippett’s masterpiece, but it remains a work of hope and optimism. Martin Messier: Projectors (world première) Martin Messier’s work constantly redefines the frontiers of Musique Concrète by creating sounds with everyday objects, such as alarm clocks, pens, self-conceived machines and sewing machines. Fin de Siècle: The Voice of Europe at the end of the 19th century Walk through the streets of La Belle Époque and join us to discover Parisian lifestyle, Viennese Waltzes, Germanic and Austro-Hungarian Secession, Italian Verismo and Drawing Room and Salon music in Victorian England through Art Song and the world of the chanson, Lieder, and Neapolitan songs and arias of the 1890s, performed by RNCM singers in the unique surroundings of the Royal Exchange Theatre. Between concerts, the foyers will resound with sounds from across the Atlantic, from the early years of Tin Pan Alley to songs from the ‘King of Ragtime’, Scott Joplin. Dr Francis Toase introduces each concert by setting the political scene, and the closing concert of the day draws together the finest repertoire from this gloriously rich period of music-making. Junge Lieder Towards the end of the 19th century, German politics became progressively more chaotic. Meanwhile, Wagner had changed the course of opera, while German song composers mixed the Classical and the Romantic. The RNCM Theatre seats up to 657 and boasts one of the largest stages in Manchester. The RNCM Concert Hall offers various layout options, giving a flexible seating capacity of between 450 and 750. It is a unique octagonal performance space and contains a Hradetsky Four Manual Concert Organ. The RNCM Studio Theatre seats up to 120 and flexible seating offers a variety of set ups including theatre-style and in the round. The Carole Nash Recital Room seats up to 100 and is suitable for small-scale performances, conferences and catering receptions. The Lecture Theatre seats 150 and is ideal for pre-concert talks, discussions and presentations.
The Lecture Theatre and Concert Hall are closed for refurbishment from January – October 2014, however, all other spaces are still available for hire. RNCM Historic Instrument Collection
The RNCM Historic Instrument Collection is located in the basement of the Library part of the College building (to the left of the main entrance on Booth Street West). It can be accessed using the staircase behind the Box Office or by the lift situated opposite the RNCM Library. Spring 2014 opening hours are 12 - 1pm before every lunchtime concert and 6 - 7.15pm where the symbol appears.

External Venues Spring 2014
All public spaces and facilities are accessible to wheelchair users (via lifts).
As the redevelopment of the RNCM Concert Hall begins we will lose the use of the space until October 2014. So, we’ve been exploring Manchester to locate interesting alternative venues for some of our programmed events. Here’s a list of our host venues and on the facing page, a map to indicate their locations.

The Bridgewater Hall
Guide dogs are welcome, please inform the Box Office when booking your ticket. The RNCM Concert Hall and RNCM Theatre are fitted with hearing assistance systems and receivers (available from the Front of House team on request). Receivers can be used in conjunction with a standard hearing aid in the ‘T’ position or an earpiece provided. The RNCM Studio Theatre, Carole Nash Recital Room and RNCM Lecture Theatre are fitted with induction loops (hearing aids should be switched to the ‘T’ position). Parking (1) The RNCM car park is located next to the College in the basement of the Sir Charles Groves Hall of Residence, off Rosamund Street West. Open from 5pm weekday evenings and anytime over weekends and bank holidays, costing £3 (payable on entry). Closes at 11.30pm.
