The Two teams combined for a state record in total points in a single game with a total of 180. Also, Thomas Jefferson’s 99 points were the most points by an 11-man team since 1933. I interviewed a few players about the coach telling them they were going to take the knee instead of getting 100 points. “I was mad at first because I wanted 100” -Dylan Carman “I was mad in the moment because I know we could have scored the 100th point or put the 2 points in the endzone to get 101” - Cayden Rowell “I thought it showed good Sportsmanship” - Jermaine Green “I was confused and slightly
upset because it would have been cool to kick the 100th point PAT, but I know why he did it and I am not mad” - Ty Harold Sioux City North (1-1) 7 14 28 26—81 Thomas Jefferson (1-1) 22 35 21 21—99 CBTJ: Seneca Calhoun 2 run (Cameron Baker run) CBTJ: Baker 3 run (Calhoun run) CBTJ: Baker 8 run (run failed) SCN: Cale Conner 13 pass from Matt Hagan (Christian Lavariega kick) CBTJ: Jermaine Green 68 run (Ty Harold kick) CBTJ: Cameron Lukavsky 11 run (Harold kick) SCN: Devonta Cobbs 41 run (kick failed) CBTJ: Baker 39 run (Harold kick) CBTJ: Baker 43 run (Harold kick) SCN: Trenton Frerichs 53 kickoff return (Hagan run)

Chrystina Winchell Reporter Thomas Jefferson has appointed Mrs. Dania Freudenburg to be our new principal. School officials announced the transfer at the end of last year. Freudenburg, former principal of Roncalli Catholic High School, a private school in Omaha, She was appointed here by a coworker. “A former coworker actually told me that there was this job opening and suggested I look at Council Bluffs.” “I thought the district looked amazing, and the school looked
really great, so I applied for it and here I am.” Freudenburg stated. Freudenburg discussed her transfer between private and public during an interview on Wednesday afternoon. “There are some differences in the expectations. It’s a lot more strict probably in a private environment as far as there’s uniforms and just some of the expectations. During the first year at TJ, which enrolls around 1200 students, one thing that Freudenburg pushed is the enforce-

ment of the cell phone policy and standing in the hallway. “We feel strongly about it because it’s something that was requested by the teachers.” Freudenburg said, “We just really want to make sure that we’re taking an opportunity for that distraction and as much as we can focusing on the class subject.” As far as the issue with standing in the hallways during passing period, Freudenburg explained that students should be “using that time to get from their class to the next class” and that
“that’s really what passing period is for.” The new principal also talked about possibly reducing the amount of time students have between each class. “What I’ve seen is that we have five minute passing periods and we’re kind of looking at, is that to much time?” Freudenburg states, “Because if we have so much time to stop and talk, do we need to reduce that so that we can make sure that we’re utilizing out time during the day.” Freudenburg also goes on to say, “We are not going to change it right now unless it continues to be and issue where kids feel like they have to much time in the hallway during passing. That they don’t need that amount of time to get to class? Then that might be something we look at.” Because this is the principals first year at Thomas Jefferson, Freudenburg stated that she will be observing more than changing. “I have tried to not make a lot of big changes right away. I think one of the big things is I just want to make sure that everyone’s to class on time.”

Kaepernick has not played for the NFL since 2016, because he began silently protesting police brutality and racial inequality, by kneeling during the national anthem. Many people celebrated this but others were infuriated. “No why would I stop buying nike, people are mad about what him taking a stand for the

Even though it doesn’t hurt Nike at all cause they already have your money. “Half the people that just post it online they’re like just doing it just cause everybody else is doing it.” said Camron Hastie. A post from twitter stated “I just seen people cutting their NIKE clothing because of NIKE supporting Kaepernick! LMAO
@Nike already has your $$$.. Might as well cut that up too” This doesn’t affect Nike that much, earlier this year Nike and the NFL extended their partnership for another eight years. All 32 of their teams will wear uniforms and apparel supplied by Nike. According to NBC News Nike’s sales jumped by 31% almost double last year, after former quarterback now activist, Colin Kaepernick became their new spokesperson. Market observers say that after the presidents public display of his anger could possibly backfire and draw more attention to Nike. Chole Brown says, “They just want to start stuff like cutting or crossing of the nike symbol on your clothes that’s not really offending anybody, that’s just being

Where he is seen not holding his hand over his heart during the national anthem, but he is angry at the fact that Nike is using kaepernick. “Nike is a company that is focused on younger generations and expanding their market. This ad did that for them,” said Hetal Pandya, the co-founder of Edison Trends. Nike wants to show people that they care and support what Colin Kaepernick is standing for. They want to focus on the younger generation so they can help them by influencing their lives, and show them that it is ok to stand up for what you believe in no matter what others say.

Newspaper Changes
The Signal April paper 2018. Photo by: Heather Giovannoi
Heather Giovannoi Reporter This year the Jacket Journalism department has made the ultimate decision to not print the newspaper. Instead of the newspaper we have decided to use an app, and on our website. According to Emily Eikenberry, the Editor in Chief of The Signal, “We have decided to not print because, teens these days are less likely to read the newspaper because they are always on their phones.” Teens spend an average of nine hours on social media a day, and would never bother picking
up a newspaper let alone read it. All of these different social medias is how they get their news, whether they are reading an actual article or something someone posted. By not printing the newspaper, we are a lot saving money. Printing the paper cost 60 dollars a month in black and white, front and back 300 copies, and with this app it only cost us 10 dollars a month and the pictures will be in color, there is also so many other things that will be on the app like lunch menu, Swarm TV, etc. Check out our app when it is released or you can visit our website Jacket journalism.

New security measures Thomas Jefferson took more security measures after all the school shootings that happened in other parts of the States. Photo by: Emily Eikenberry
Kelsie Anderson Reporter In 2018, TJ has made many adjustments to their schools security system in order for their students and staff to be safe. Many students don’t agree with the changes that have been made by thinking that they are to extreme or that some are unneeded. The new principal at TJ, Mrs. Dania Freudenberg talked about
what the new security measures are for. She stated, “In a building this size, this is essential for the safety of all staff and students, and it allows us to limit the available entrances and have better control and knowledge of who is in the building”. Freudenburg stated, “The doors between the two buildings are unlocked during passing period, to allow students to get to and from classes”. Freudenburg continues, “After passing period is over, the doors are automatically locked again,

and any student who is not in the building on time will be required to sign in at attendance and receive a pass to class”. Freudenberg also stated, “With the new security at entrances, all doors are locked during the school day”. Mrs. Windham described what the staff do during passing period that they didn’t do before. She said, The doors outside are locked from the outside just like all the Elementary schools.” She was also asked on what she is doing personally for the schools security.
Windham stated. “ We just monitor the building and were stationing ourselves all throughout the building during passing periods.” She also stated, “When the tardy bell rings were clearing hallways, clearing bathrooms and just checking a lot of things.” Windham was asked on what the reason is for all of the security measures. She said, “It’s just to make our building a little bit safer, it’s not that we were unsafe before but we just have to improve on things.” TJ’s school officer talked about
what students are expected to do when they enter the school late and what procedures he would do for the school in any emergency situation. He stated, “Coming in and checking in with the secretary, everybody that comes in will have to be buzzed in and buzzed out of the doors.” He also explained, “If anything were to come up, we would do what’s best for the school and staff and the children”. If you have questions you can go ask the Officer or one of the administrative.

Fall trends to try
From left to right: Balmain, Givenchy, Miu Miu Photo provide by: Huffingtonpost.com Rihanna rocks pumps and vintage jeans Photo provide by: Harpersbazaar.com
Chrystina Winchell Reporter If there’s one thing we’ve learned from New York Fashion Week (NYFW), it’s that fashion is changing. One great thing about clothes is it says what you’re feeling without having to actually say it. This is called a fashion statement. Some of the biggest fashion statements seen during New York Fashion Week we know are coming in hot this Fall. Feeling optimistic? Try on some bold, bright colours that you wouldn’t normally wear. Last fall, society was getting into the greys and browns. However, with
2018 being the year of change of uprising, bland is not the way to go this season. So grab that neon shirt you’ve been hiding in your closet and show it off. Are the ‘80’s back? We all suspected it when biker shorts and fanny packs went into style this summer. But biker shorts might be a little cold for Iowa weather. However, there are some warmer ‘80’s-like options seen all over Instagram. As modeled on rising instagram pages, Revice Denim and Nasty Gal, vintage jeans have taken over as staple pants in several of the appearances. Another old trend becoming new
is pumps. The great thing about pumps and vintage jeans is they look amazing together. Sabrina Carpenter showed off this outfit rage in a photoshoot, other celebrities have demonstrated this as well. Whether you’re a baggy shirt or a short dress type of person, the direction this fall is the more is better. In the Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu runways, we couldn’t help but see that layers were a big part of the look. These displays were also mostly unisex clothing, so men could follow the style as well. However, the downside to these runway looks is several of us can’t afford such expensive

brands. So how to take runway looks to the street? Try putting a hoodie underneath a jean jacket or maybe a white tee shirt underneath that strapped dress so you can wear it to school. It’s not just fashion that’s changing, it’s the world as well and society can’t ignore it. Activist organizations such as #MeToo, NeverAgain, ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Black Lives Matter have become a big topic of conversation in the United States. Celebrities such as Charlie Puth and Cara Delevingne have been spotted wearing statement tees and rebellious clothing
expressing political and social views. An example being black dresses at the Golden Globes and orange bandanas at Everytown. So if it’s a Monday morning and you’re feeling a little lazy, match a statement tee with a pair of jeans or joggers and there’s an outfit. While I do not recommend ridding your summer dresses just yet, it would be a good idea to start adding some autumn pieces. If there’s one thing NYFW has taught us - it’s that the ‘80’s are back. So if you need a little more inspo, just tap into your parents old polaroids and you should be good.
