Pulling the Strings 3RD TO 14TH APRIL CONRAD KOCH: PUPPET GUY, BAXTER GOLDEN ARROW THEATRE, CAPE TOWN
Top South African ventriloquist Conrad Koch is set to return to the Mother City for a two-week run of his brand new show, Puppet Guy, along with his famous puppet comrade, Chester Missing. Puppet Guy is billed as Koch’s most fun show to date, and is a departure from his previously highly political work on stage, instead focusing on hilarious characters, funny observations, and world-class entertainment. It’s comedy mayhem as Chester and Koch playfully battle each other: Chester demands equal rights for puppets and to not be put in suitcases. Two feather dusters and a slipper become Hilton, the dancing ostrich; sunglasses and a hoodie become a DJ who actually DJs. If that’s not all, a brand new character has been introduced into the show – Africa’s most dangerous animal, a vegetarian mosquito.

Cavalli, in the Cape Winelands, continues to captivate both art lovers and avid foodies, this time with Well Worn, an eclectic display of intricate fashion and textile design. Participating artists are set to explore fashion as a manifestation of contemporary culture during this compelling exhibition, which runs at the Gallery at Cavalli until 27th May. If art serves as a mirror to our civilization, what truer way is there to reflect on our Zeitgeist than to examine art in its closet form to us – through fashion and textiles? Fashion has played an integral role in human expression and over the years has woven its way into contemporary art practice. Artworks will include figurative, abstract and conceptual works, as well as sculptural, photographic, performance and video graphic artwork.

Winchester On an isolated stretch of land 80 km outside of San Francisco in the US sits the most haunted house in the world. Constructed in an incessant mania that lasted 24/7 for decades, it stands seven storeys tall and

She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters. This movie is inspired by true events.

The Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2013 is a blend of 67 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 % Merlot, 7 % Petit Verdot, 5 % Cabernet franc and 5 % Malbec. The wine has a stunning deep garnet red colour. The nose is characterised by red and black fruit with hints of dried herbs, eucalyptus, cedarwood and graphite, while you can expect flavours of dark cherries, raspberries and blackcurrant. It can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from ageing until 2026, and will pair beautifully with veal Osso Bucco or grilled fillet. Turn it Up! Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer, a songwriter, a dancer, anthropologist, and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music has broken barriers in this country and worldwide. His latest album, King of Time, contains brand-new original music. The seventrack album took around five months to record at B# Studios in Johannesburg with renowned producers Denholm Harding and John Paul De Stefani. The sound of the album has a strong hybrid pop feel, but retains the same sensibilities that have endeared Clegg’s music to so many. Clegg has an unparalleled repertoire of songs which began with the release of Juluka’s Universal Men in 1979, and continued through the Savuka years, with his full body of work all falling under one label. King Of Time includes

songs performed on The Final Journey Tour such as “Colour of My Skin,” which has backing vocal support by Angélique Kidjo, and “I’ve Been Looking”, performed and co-written by son, Jesse Clegg. “This album was a chance for me to mix new musical genres and add an African flavour to it,” Clegg says. Clegg was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and underwent chemotherapy. Throughout the treatment he continued to tour locally and internationally, undertaking a nine-week tour of the USA and Canada in 2016. As he is now in remission, Clegg has decided to use this opportunity to promote this album, perform a set of concerts worldwide, and release an autobiography. The wild flowers of the Namakwa are definitely a natural phenomenon and best discovered on foot, which makes it ultimately appealing to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
As the only arid hotspot in the world this region contains more than 6 000 plant species, 250 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 132 species of reptiles and amphibians and an unknown number of insects, making it the world’s most diverse, arid environment. Showing the World
THE REEL AFRICA South African actors are killing it on the silver screen and making global audiences reassess their ideas about the continent. The latest films are showing the world that Africa isn’t a place of poverty to be pitied, but an exciting continent with rich cultures and spectacular stories of its own.

Hammering home the Afro-optimism is the box-office busting Black Panther, which also features South Africa’s fatherand-son acting duo, John and Atandwa Kani, who speak to each other in Xhosa during their scenes. This Marvel superhero movie is breaking new ground by finally giving black actors the central roles, instead of playing mere sidekicks to the hero or being the first to fall, in typical Hollywood tradition. “This time, the sun is shining on Africa,” says John Kani. “This movie came at the right time. We’re struggling to find exemplary leaders that are role models, so when you see the Black Panther as a young boy and he takes off that mask you think, ‘Oh my God, he looks like me. He is African and I am African. Now we can look up to someone who is African.’ ”
rest of the world. When the country comes under threat, some believe it should only protect its own people, while others advocate a pan-African attitude of aiding the less fortunate. John Kani plays the old king, T’Chaka. “I reunite with my son after not seeing him for some time. The director and I were challenged with coming up with the ideal thing to say to my film son, played by my real son, Atandwa,” he said. “It had to be in the native language of Wakanda. I chose to say something in Xhosa which everyone on set loved. ‘We need that,’ the director said.” The film also features strong female roles with South African’s Connie Chiume playing a tribal elder. There’s also the Dora Milaje, a fierce all-female army, which was inspired by 19th century Dahomey Amazons in a kingdom that’s now part of Benin.

Fun Fact Black Panther set designers used more than 25,000 cubic feet of foam to sculpt a mock-up of South Africa’s Oribi Gorge, for the scenes set in Warrior Falls. That was safer than filming in the gorge itself, because foam rocks do a lot less damage to falling actors!

Black Panther made box office history, raking in almost R17 million during its opening days in South Africa and enjoying the biggest ever opening weekend in East and West Africa. CONTROVERSIAL CREATIVITY South Africa is also causing a stir with the controversial movie Inxeba (The Wound), which garnered 14 awards at film festivals around the world for its sensitively filmed story about gay love in a Xhosa initiation school. It scored a critics’ rating of 83 % on Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregation website. “It’s a gripping movie on its own dramatic terms: enigmatic, visually striking, culturally sympathetic and pungently fresh,” wrote Paul Byrnes of The Sydney Morning Herald. The New York Times described the film by South African director John Trengove as austere and unsettling, saying: “His direction is perfectly judged, up to and including the shudder-inducing ending.” Inxeba made the Oscar shortlist in the best foreign language category, but didn’t make the top five nominations. Locally, the film is still subject to a court case over its screening, with the filmmakers fighting an ‘X’ rating imposed when the Film and Publication Board’s appeals tribunal

succumbed to pressure from angry Xhosa factions. It’s far from pornographic, but if the rating is confirmed by the high court, it will be off the circuit again. Trengove teamed up with local production house Urucu Media to create the film. “Until recently there was a shortage of South African film producers willing to take risks on non-formulaic projects,” he says. “When I joined forces
with Urucu Media, we decided this is exactly the niche the company would occupy. We wanted to create a space for films like The Wound, to encourage original voices in local cinema that could hopefully also reach an international audience. Today we are seeing more daring films coming out of South Africa, and I like to think Urucu has been a significant part of that shift.”
A LIGHT LOVE AFFAIR WITH JOBURG Johannesburg itself plays a starring role in the movie Catching Feelings, from stand-up comic and actor Kagiso Lediga. And the city plays its part wonderfully, with scenes shot in funky Maboneng and Melville and loads of other recognisable places. Lediga wrote, acted in and directed the film, and plays Max, a jaded writer whose marriage to a journalist (Pearl Thusi) has hit a rut. Their lives are turned upside down when a hedonistic older writer (Andrew Buckland) moves into their home. Lediga’s character is not a likeable guy, as he’s constantly worrying that he’s going to lose his wife, yet giving her no reason to stay. He shows those remarkable double standards where a husband will get it on with another woman, but goes crazy if his wife might be getting a little loving elsewhere. Lediga says he wanted to make a fun film about Johannesburg. “Contemporary middle-class life across the world is very similar, with little kinds of differences.

The Road to
SUSTAINABILITY
Debswana Launches Diamond Museum & Game Park Extension When a staff member from Debswana Diamond Company – the world’s largest diamond producer – first lobbied for the development of a wildlife conservation area around Orapa Airport in Botswana more than 30 years ago, no one could have imagined that his idea would lay the foundation for the world-class game park that Debswana has today. Text & Images © Supplied
Established in 1985, Orapa Game Park epitomises Debswana’s conservation efforts. The park was recently extended and now covers a massive 34,591 hectares. It boasts a large variety of species such as leopard, White rhino, gemsbok, eland, giraffe, zebra, impala, wildebeest, kudu, and warthogs. The game park is part of Debswana’s socio-economic closure ambitions. It’s also a perfect stopover for those travelling to tourist attractions such as the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert. During the official launch of the Orapa Game Park extension and the opening of the Adrian Gale Diamond Museum, Balisi Bonyongo, MD of Debswana, said that the company is committed to building resilient communities and ensuring socio-economic sustainability beyond mining in the Boteti region. The company is developing a Community Benefit Framework of which the museum is a key component.

The Diamond Museum and extension of the park are part of Debswana’s Orapa Today, Boteti Tomorrow (OTBT) programme. The first part of this programme, “Orapa Today, is geared towards making Orapa a great place to live and work, while the second part, Boteti Tomorrow, is intended to build a sustainable alternative economy for the Boteti Sub District, in an effort to leave a lasting legacy beyond diamond mining. The OTBT programme was conceived in 2011 by the late Dr Adrian Gale, who was the then General Manager of Orapa Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM). The Diamond Museum has been named after him. His widow, Sue Gale, travelled more than 10,000 miles from Australia to Orapa to honour the great work that was initiated by her late husband. Manfred Max, who was involved in the first kimberlite pipe to be discovered in Botswana in 1967 – B/K1, 15 km north
of Letlhakane – was also amongst the dignitaries who attended the launch. President Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who was also in attendance, said, “The opening of the first Diamond Museum in Botswana marks an opportune moment to capture and consolidate the country’s significant journey and milestones. The museum is also a legacy for future generations to appreciate the anchoring building blocks of this economy and country, which at independence ranked amongst the poorest in the world.” The layout and design of the museum consists of: display rooms which reflect mining processes and mining products; a storage area; visitors’ lounge; and indoor and outdoor display areas. With these developments, Debswana is indeed on the right road to sustainability. For more information, please visit www.debswana.com.

“I love dilapidated buildings,” says developer Brian Green. His ability to fathom what could be, rather than what is, shows in his past projects. Take 44 Stanley in Auckland Park, for example: Where others saw disused industrial structures, Brian saw a potentially bustling hub of quirky retailers and
restaurants. The precinct has since become a favourite hangout for Joburgers fatigued by malls and pavement cafes. Which is why, when the idea to transform a dilapidated piece of land in the neglected Johannesburg suburb of Lorentzville came about, Brian was the obvious choice of fairy godmother.
He was immediately thrilled by the 30,000m² site. “It ticked all of my boxes,” he says. It wasn’t simply the area’s beauty or its potential to become something great, but also the opportunity it presented to “fix the city”. This is something that ignites Brian’s passion. Instead of seeing

The community is encouraged to play an active role in making the system work. Brian is looking into establishing an initiative where schoolchildren can lend a hand in the gardens, so that they can learn a new skill while also having a chance to earn credits or points. Johannesburg bleed into new territories as it creeps steadily northwards, he’d prefer the city’s inhabitants to adopt a “reuse and recycle” approach. CREATING A COMMUNITY SPACE Of course, this requires getting the surrounding community on board – one of the reasons why Brian settled on the idea of an urban farm as the first project to populate the Victoria Yards precinct. A food garden would also help to keep the precinct car-free – he dislikes the clutter and congestion caused by vehicles – while providing an answer to the increasingly critical question of food security. By October 2016, just eight months after first viewing the site, Brian had already gathered together a team of horticulturalists to start the gardens. He had also started clearing up the building ruins in the area, refurbishing them to make them suitable for the next section of the project: an artist’s community. “We were already receiving notice from people who wanted to be part of what we were starting, but we’re selective about who can join. We look at how they can contribute and how they’ll fit into our ecosystem of artists and makers,” Brian explains. AN ARTY ECO-SYSTEM It is, indeed, an eco-system. Brian and his team is working hard to create the type of environment where people can use their skills and their materials to

help each other. The ability to be part of a mutually supportive environment is far more important than fame, although a number of artists who have established studios at Victoria Yards do indeed enjoy a high profile, among them Roger Ballen, Ayanda Mabulu and Ben Ngobeni. Once the garden is fully established, its produce will be sold at a weekly market, along with fruit and veggies from other neighbouring farms. Brian foresees a setup where shoppers can purchase a wooden box (goodbye, plastics), returning with it every week to be filled with organically grown goodness at a price far below those charged by supermarkets. The community is encouraged to play an active role in making the system work. Brian is looking into establishing an initiative where schoolchildren can lend a hand in the gardens, so that they can learn a new skill while also having a chance to earn credits or points. These points can be used by the children to gain entry into the musical productions which are also to become part of Victoria Yards’ offering. The precinct’s natural amphitheatre is a

perfect venue for all kinds of productions, including theatre, but Brian explains that music will play a special role because it has the power to hook into children’s hearts. And, he maintains, the best way to become a fully integrated part of the community is by making sure that its children view Victoria Yards as their own space. This is what is going to make Victoria Yards so much more than just another Joburg hipster hangout. Yes, it will attract more than its fair share of craft-food lovers who regularly stalk the city’s innercity food markets and microbreweries, but unlike many other rejuvenation initiatives – such as Maboneng or Juta Street – the action takes place inside, rather than in the street. Brian likens it to a castle, saying that the ultimate goal is to create an interactive public area. ALREADY TURNING HEADS Although it is only set to open in June, Victoria Yards is already garnering massive attention from all spheres of city life. Visitors flock to the Yards’ Impi Brewery every weekend, and even international tourists
stop by to have a look at Johannesburg’s rebirth in action. The precinct has even been noticed by worldwide bodies, which have recognised its contribution to urban regeneration. Brian has been invited to talk about the Yards at the 2018 Venice Biennale (although he has postponed attendance until 2020, when the project is fully developed and he has greater proof of its impact), and will also be making a presentation at international body Urban Land Institute’s conversations around bettering cities. What makes his efforts at Victoria Yards more exciting is that it is part of a larger initiative to improve the Eastern City Gateway. From official local government interventions, such as the revitalisation of the Jukskei River, to the establishment of artists’ colonies like August House, it’s shaking off its peeling paint to reveal a vibrant heart. As Brian says, it’s about slow sustainability rather than rapid gentrification – which makes Victoria Yards not so much an interesting place to visit, but a movement.

Four Habits for
HEALTHY, HAPPY EYES Eyes – now that’s a part of our bodies we don’t give a ton of thought to. But we should, because they’re one of the hardest-working organs we have, and are very precious to our quality of life. Of course, we could survive if they were to stop working, but the thought of losing some of the most beautiful sights known to us – a sunset, a vast natural landscape, the faces of our loved ones – is a scary one. Text & Image © Supplied
Unlike many other parts of our bodies, our eyes are on duty from the moment we open them in the morning – without a warm-up! We give these guys a solid runaround every day. But are we taking proper care of them so that they’re able to perform at their optimum for years to come? Here are four tips for keeping your eyesight in top shape: 1. Make sure they’re tested regularly: It may feel unnecessary, especially if you’re convinced you have 20/20 vision, but the truth is that there are many conditions that can develop without any noticeable symptoms. Glaucoma (the damaging of the eye’s optic nerve), for example, can go undetected for a long time. And while it can be treated, the damage already
38/
INDWE
done by the time it is diagnosed cannot be reversed. 2. Make an effort to keep your eyes protected from the sun: Get yourself and your family some quality sunglasses for the outdoors, and keep a hat handy too. The sun can be unforgiving on these sensitive organs. 3. Keep your daily diet as nutritious and wholesome as possible: Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in the likes of leafy green vegetables, blueberries and tomatoes can help to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, as does the beta-carotene we find in carrots. Citrus is also a goodie and sources of omega 3 can help to reduce the symptoms of dry-eye.
4. Keep working towards the goal of a healthy lifestyle: If you need any more reasons to quit smoking, here’s another one: Smoking is the greatest cause of macular degeneration after ageing. Heavy drinking can also significantly impact on your vision by impairing colour vision, central vision field and perception of contrast. If you can turn these tips into lasting habits, you’ll ensure that not only do your eyes have the best chance for staying in good shape, but your overall health will benefit greatly too. Zanzibar has long been a destination of choice for holidaymakers, and with its unmatched beach and lush surroundings, Zuri Zanzibar is taking this destination to the next level of paradise. Text: Melanie Floor Images © Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar, which opens in May 2018, benefits from being in a fantastic location – right near the turtle-nesting zone of Tumbatu Island. It’s also close to the Mnemba Atoll Marine Park, which offers some of the best spots in Zanzibar for diving and snorkelling. One standout feature of Zuri Zanzibar is the beach. The resort is nestled on the most beautiful white beach on the northwest shores of the island, 50 km from Stone Town and its international airport. The hotel’s private 300-m, west-facing beach is free of any tide impact, allowing for safe swimming all day long, not to mention breath-taking sunsets. “The beach was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. “I have travelled the world and stayed in the most luxurious sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible colour of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows in the distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.” The hotel includes 55 bungalows, suites, and villas that sit comfortably within Zanzibar’s culture, climate, and geography. From the outside, Zuri Zanzibar emulates a traditional Zanzibar village, while the inside offers the very best in comfort,
Particular emphasis has been placed on the gardens at Zuri Zanzibar. As Dejcmar says: “The garden is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself is the garden. All the villas and bungalows are part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating it. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers placed in the resort. The result is an enormous tribute to Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.” Be one of the first lucky few to immerse yourself in the tranquillity and luxury of

A PORTRAIT Swaziland born artist Mbongeni Fakudze, an exceptionally talented portrait painter with the inquisitive eye of a scientist, is one of only three featured artists at the acclaimed ODA Gallery of Fine Art in Franschhoek. Text: Kayla Cloete Images © ODA Gallery His portraits – commanding and charged with energy – invite viewers to consider the poles of male and female thinking, while retaining a sense of androgyny in order to convey a full range of emotions that are not dictated by gender stereotypes. Created through a similar process to that of a physicist
pulling apart observable aspects of reality to reveal elements concealed from everyday perception, Fakudze’s portrayals are spontaneous and expressive, and his colour application is vivid. “I have always seen the world through the microscopic eye of an atomic physicist and simultaneously the cosmic
eye of an astrophysicist. I am fascinated by the nature of the physical world in which we live,” he says. “Finding that it may look solid from a distance but dissolve or disintegrate into particles as you get closer and closer . . . Then the question becomes: ‘What exactly is reality?’”

COMBINING ART AND SCIENCE Fakudze has always had a natural attraction towards both art and science. “I was a bit of a nerd in my school days – but a cool one with nappy hair,” he jokes. In high school he developed a serious interest in art when he discovered the biographies of a variety of European artists. “I always enjoyed drawing and was told I was good at it. To know that I could make a career of it was just too enticing. “My family was relatively supportive of my artistic dreams. But not knowing much about the field – and coming from a country which does not properly recognise the value of art – they did not know what to do with my talent,” Fakudze explains. Not having a relevant course available to him in his home country of Swaziland, and having developed a determination to do what he loved, Fakudze enrolled for a Fine Arts Degree through the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria. After completing his degree and influenced by the works of Magritte, Dalí, and Duchamp, Fakudze dabbled in surrealism. He later experimented with the digital manipulation of photographs combined with overlaid acrylic paint. THE POWER OF THE PORTRAIT Fakudze moved to Johannesburg twoand-a-half years ago to further pursue his career. The change of scenery brought with it a change in creative approach, moving his attention towards the expressive nature of the human form. “I was looking for a looser technique, which I found in abstract expressive portraiture,” he says. When asked why he chose portraits as his means of artistic expression, Fakudze explains: “It stems from my love of the complexities of the human face and figure. It is able not only to create emotions, but also to tell a certain human story. “Usually in the female portraits I create, the figures tend to have a regality. Being raised by a strong and respectable, high achiever of a mother, I feel I subconsciously see her strength in these women that I create.” Most of the faces he paints are fictional, but inspired by real people. “They are a combination of people I know, and some of them are hybrid characters that come more from my mind more than from my
50/
INDWE
experiences. In my paintings, I tend to use very normal models who do menial jobs because I like how the immortalisation and posture of the painting raises them in status.” THE CREATIVE PROCESS When asked to describe his favourite time and setting in which to create, Fakudze’s reply is simple: “With music, from midnight to morning.” He goes on to describe his creative approach in more detail, starting with the manipulated image. “This is how I begin not only to loosen my arm and wrist, but to create an abstract palette for the rest of the piece. I then superimpose the image with a splattering and scraping of colour from light to dark and back to light using a palette knife.” There is no denying that Fakudze is a rising artist that is making a name for himself
with his natural ability to represent the human form in a manner which intrigues and delights viewers. His incredible talent lies not only in his understanding of the ways in which images impress upon us as people, via the essence of texture and colour, but also his understanding of how this essence has the capacity to affect us more deeply than the physical form to which they are attached. With a recent keen interest in film – particularly exploring the marriage of video, photographs, graphic art and live performance, as well as being a keen animator – he is taking the art world by storm, and we look forward to what he has in store for us in the near future. To keep an eye on this rising star, and to view more of his work, please visit www.odagallery.co.za.

Where the LION SLEEPS Shumbalala Game Lodge
Just a short while ago, the word “shumbalala” was non-existent in my family’s vocabulary and had no meaning in our lives. But all that has changed – and radically so! The word, the name, the place has moved right onto the centre stage of our world. This is one of those strange occurrences in life where the previously unknown becomes dear and almost permanent in your universe. Text: Ivor Jenkins Images: © Shumbalala Game Lodge
From the moment we drove through the gates of Shumbalala Game Lodge in the Thornybush Private Game Reserve (next to the Kruger National Park), we seemed to be filled with a sense of freedom. We had heard that Shumbalala was an internationally renowned, fivestar private bush lodge with personal and friendly service, but were wholly unprepared for the lengths to which the staff were prepared to go in order to make each minute feel like a day’s worth of relaxation.

A DRIVE TO LEARN & EXPERIENCE The two game drives per day – and we ended up doing seven in total, as well as a nice long walk in the reserve – never had a dull moment. Whether we left in the early morning, armed with a blanket and hot water bottle against the nip in the air, or headed out in the late afternoon to toast the sunset with a glass of wine and a snack, the experience filled us with a sense of awe and privilege. Our game ranger and animal tracker both shared fascinating information about the animals, trees and
birds, which was truly educational in every sense. They patiently imparted information, their approach reflecting their deep passion for this mystical place and its inhabitants. Back at the lodge, the highly trained chef went all out, serving tantalising dishes in the most outstandingly decorative way. We also did not have a single meal in the same location. Each meal was served in a different spot, carefully selected to ensure that it was not only the taste, but also the surrounding environment that would leave a lasting impression on our senses.
DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE Like most travellers with an overdeveloped sense of duty and commitment to ensuring that business stays on track while away, I had enquired beforehand about cellphone reception and Wi-Fi access, and dutifully packed my laptop to make sure I was not left out of the e-loop. To the amazement and wonder of my children, I did not switch on the laptop or use my cellphone for a record-breaking three days. Just for a short moment in time, they believed my digital addiction had miraculously been cured! And then there are the rooms. Each comfortable, spacious environment features tasteful African-inspired décor and incredible attention to detail. Of course – as is tradition on the continent for the adventurous traveller – no teenage boy could resist “testing” the outside shower, and no older sister could pass up the opportunity to capture the moment for posterity! HIGH PRAISE INDEED While staying at the lodge, many of the international visitors were keen to engage with us and learn more about South Africa. Each of the members of our family was asked (in the nicest possible way) about life in this beautiful and diverse country. Two weeks after our return from Shumbalala, I received an email from a fellow guest – the CEO of a US organisation – to let me know: “Those few days in the African bush at Shumbalala was the best holiday we have ever had.” During our few days together, I had learned that this man had travelled to a different country for his annual holiday for the last 20 years! This is indeed a compliment of the highest order, and a sentiment my family and I share. Getting on the shuttle to return to Hoedspruit Airport was a sad occasion. We felt as if we were leaving behind our souls, as well as a sense of reconnecting with nature. Since that moment, we have taken comfort in the knowledge that we take with us a memory, and a new name: Shumbalala. The word has comfortably and permanently weaved its way into our family talk, and has only to be mentioned for the peace and joy of those four days to settle in the midst of our home. TOP TRAVEL TIPS Make Your Travels Memorable for the Right Reasons
There’s nothing quite like zipping up your bags, making your way through the hustle and bustle of the airport and jetting off on a new travel adventure. For the most part, travelling is an exciting time to discover foreign places and make new memories. However, a sudden illness, serious injury or your luggage going AWOL could also turn out to be pretty memorable – for all the wrong reasons! Text: Supplied Images © iStockphoto.com
If you’re planning a trip outside the borders of South Africa, even just regionally, it would be wise to take note of these important travel tips from Chubb Travel Insurance to help protect you from any mishaps that could leave a serious dent in your finances – and emotions. TAKE CARE OF MEDICAL EXPENSES WITH TRAVEL INSURANCE No-one likes to consider the worstcase scenario, but serious injuries and illnesses when travelling abroad may end up requiring emergency medical treatment and possibly even medical evacuation. The associated medical costs can rapidly run into millions of rand, especially in areas
with high healthcare costs such as the US, Europe, or certain countries in the Far East. For example, surgical treatment of a broken arm in the US can cost anywhere from $16,000 – close to R200,000. To ensure these costs can be paid upfront and won’t be added to your travel budget, it is essential to have travel insurance in place that will cover any medical emergencies, and provide you with the support and onthe-ground assistance you will need in a time of crisis. DON’T ASSUME YOUR MEDICAL AID WILL COVER YOU It’s very important to check what level of cover – if any – your medical aid provides
when travelling, as not all medical schemes provide cover outside the borders of South Africa. In some cases, specific limits and exclusions subject to the local conditions of your cover will apply, so it’s important to understand what these limits and exclusions are, and whether it is necessary to take out additional travel insurance to cover any shortfalls. You may think that R1 million sounds like a reasonable amount of cover, but when you consider the currency exchange rate, a medical emergency will quickly reach that amount. Likewise, it is important to also check the limits and exclusions offered by credit card providers to ensure sufficient coverage limits.

READ THE FINE PRINT When deciding which product is best for you, it’s always best to read the small print to make sure you’re getting the right cover at the right price. Some of the more important covers you should consider include: • Unlimited emergency medical expenses, with added benefits such as 24/7 medical assistance and advice, so that in the event of a medical emergency you have access to onthe-ground support and advice when you need it the most. • Upfront medical guarantee payment to ensure admission to hospital, which would otherwise result in bills having to be paid from your pocket. • Emergency repatriation so that in the event of a medical emergency or a political or natural disaster, you can be airlifted to safety. GOING ON AN ADVENTURE HOLIDAY If you’re heading off for something a little more adventurous, you may need additional travel insurance add-ons for the likes of skiing, scuba diving, and
62/
INDWE
even for those momentous hole-in-one golf experiences. UNDERSTAND YOUR DESTINATION’S POLITICAL & SOCIAL ISSUES & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Do some homework on the destinations you are visiting and check out the requirements for visiting a country by registering your trip via www.red24.com/Chubbsa or call +27 21 700 3820.
PROTECT YOUR VITAL TRAVEL DOCUMENTS & CASH Take all necessary precautions to safeguard your passport and other ID documents, travel tickets, money, credit cards and insurance documents. Avoid carrying these items together, as a loss or theft could leave you entirely without any identification or funds. Leave copies of your documentation and itinerary with someone at home to be safe. Many hotels
also have a safe in which you can keep your passport. If your money and valuables are stolen, you will need to report it at the local police station. Ensure that your passport is in good condition – the lamination is intact, pages are not torn or missing, and the dates are valid for at least a few weeks after your planned return. A passport that appears to have been tampered with could cause you a great deal of inconvenience, including refusal of entry at a foreign airport. The added benefit of taking out travel insurance is that in the event of your travel documents being lost or stolen, assistance can be provided by directing you to the nearest embassy or consulate, or getting in touch with your bank if you require a replacement card. TAKE CARE OF FINANCES Get your foreign currency before you get to your destination, as this will often give you the most value for money. To keep your travel money safe, it’s worth carrying a waist bag or pouch underneath your clothes and in front of your body – never carry your cash or documents in a backpack or where you cannot see it. Keep some money separate and within easy access to avoid drawing attention to yourself. Make sure you have sufficient funds to last you during your stay. If you are planning to rely on your debit or credit card for some of your holiday funds, it is a good idea to let the issuer know you are travelling and check that the cards will work in the country in question. Some countries require you to prove your financial means for supporting you and your family while visiting. MEDICATION If you’re on chronic or prescription medication, carry it in your hand luggage as your check-in bags could be delayed or lost, and make sure you have sufficient medication to last for the duration of your trip. Visit your doctor before you travel to do your basic health checks, and find out if you need any vaccinations before heading for your destination. It’s generally a good idea to also keep any documentation or prescriptions with you for any medication you travel with. This can help avoid unnecessary hassles and difficulty.

THE WILD SIDE Africa’s Lesser Known Green Spaces
The word “Africa” conjures images of adventure, danger and, to a degree, romanticism. This is because it is one of the last untamed places on Earth. Scenery from the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara to the lush forests of the Congo invites one to explore fascinating natural and culturally rich destinations. Africa’s beauty spots should be on the bucket list of every traveller. For the adventurous, we have chosen seven lesser-known and out-of-the ordinary eco-destinations. MOUNT NIMBA Mount Nimba is on the borders of Guinea, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The
66/

slopes of the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve are covered by dense forest. The foothills consist of grassy mountain pastures. It harbours rich flora and fauna, its native and threatened species including the viviparous toad and chimpanzees that use stones as tools. The park is part of both Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. It is home to the most
remarkable animal and plant populations on the continent and is an isolated refuge covered with montane forests, which are more elevated than other forests, making the landscape of the Gulf of Guinea an exceptional ecological site. Access is highly controlled and is only possible for organised groups with the proper permits.
Salonga Rain Forest
Cape Verde
The Sangha River
THE SANGHA RIVER The Sangha Trinational is in the northwestern Congo Basin where Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Congo meet. Much of the site is unaffected by human activity and features a broad range of humid tropical forest ecosystems with rich flora and fauna. This includes Nile
crocodiles and the Goliath tigerfish. Sangha is home to large populations of forest elephants, the critically endangered western lowland gorilla, and endangered chimpanzee. The site’s environment has preserved ecological and evolutionary processes on a huge scale, as well as great biodiversity, including many endangered animals.
CAPE VERDE Cape Verde is a chain of islands off the coast of West Africa. The idyllic, uncrowded beaches and Portuguese/ Creole culture are big draw cards. It is a naturally beautiful country, with landscapes ranging from volcanoes and mountains to lush valleys and barren, arid flatlands. This geographic diversity

is ideal for trekkers and nature tourists. Nesting turtles and other wildlife bring another dimension to the country’s eco-tourism industry. The tiny Spinguera Eco-Resort, on the island of Boa Vista, is the most overtly green spot in Cape Verde. The use of water and electricity is restricted, solar power is used to heat water, and there are no TVs or air-conditioners. Hiking, horseback riding, diving, and bushwalking tours are all available. THE GAMBIA The Gambia is surrounded by Senegal, with a narrow Atlantic coastline. It is known for its diverse ecosystems around the central Gambia River. Wildlife in the Kiang West National Park and Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve includes monkeys, hippos and rare birds. The Gambia hosts Africa’s longestrunning chimpanzee rehabilitation project. Established in 1979, the project is now home to over 100 chimps. Wild chimps disappeared from the country in the early

lush bush mangroves. It was voted the best world eco-lodge by Britain’s Sunday Times. Visiting groups are kept deliberately small to reduce their impact on the forest’s fragile ecosystem. Solar power provides

energy, and local people play a vital role in running the reserve. Another lodge, the Sandele Eco Retreat, was winner of The Guardian’s Ethical Travel Award. THE AIR AND TÉNÉRÉ NATURAL RESERVES Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, supports one of the largest conservation areas in Africa, the Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves. The area considered to be a protected sanctuary makes up only one-sixth of the total reserve. It includes the volcanic rock mass of the Aïr, a small Sahelian pocket situated in the Saharan desert of Ténéré. The reserve boasts an outstanding variety of landscapes, plant species and wild animals. The region also contains the Blue Mountains, which are beautiful. The Reserve of Aïr and Ténéré is the last bastion of Saharo-Sahelien wildlife in Niger. The isolation of the Aïr and its low population numbers account for the survival of numerous species that have been eliminated from other regions in the Sahara and Sahel. Habitats range from fixed dunes to stony gravel desert, cliff valleys, canyons, high plateaus and water holes. SALONGA RAIN FORESTS Salonga National Park is Africa’s largest tropical rain forest reserve. The park, situated at the heart of the central basin of the Congo River, is isolated and accessible only by water. It contains the remarkable evolution of both species and
communities in a forest area. The park plays a vital role in climate regulation and the capture of carbon. It also hosts numerous threatened species like the pygmy chimpanzee, the bush elephant, and the Congo peacock. Salonga National Park represents one of the very rare existing uniform environmental areas catering to specific biodiversity in central Africa. It is made up of vast marshland areas and practically inaccessible forests. Some have never been explored and may still be considered virgin. SIMIEN NATIONAL PARK The Simien National Park in northern Ethiopia is spectacular. Erosion over millions of years has created jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. The park holds global significance for biodiversity conservation because it is home to a number of globally threatened species. These include: the iconic Walia ibex, a wild mountain goat found nowhere else in the world; the Gelada baboon; and the Ethiopian wolf. The park’s spectacular landscape is part of the Simien Mountain range, which includes Ras Dejen, the highest point in Ethiopia. The wave-like plateau of the Simien Mountains is exceptional and natural beauty at its best – so much so, that its spectacular scenery is considered to rival Colorado’s Grand Canyon.

Do Consultants
ADD VALUE? Two studies – undertaken years apart and based on the results of an experiment involving several Indian textile companies – provide interesting insights on whether management consulting is effective. Text: Johan Fourie: Associate Professor in Economics, Stellenbosch University / finweek Images © iStockphoto.com
It should not come as a surprise that good managers are vital for corporate success. Early economists like Alfred Marshall, back in the 19th century, had noted the importance of good management practices to drive productivity. But because managers’ behaviour is such a difficult thing to quantify, economists have struggled to measure how important good management practices are in explaining a firm’s success. THE INITIAL STUDY In 2008, five leading economists from Stanford University in the USA and the World Bank tackled this difficult question. They wanted to know whether investing in good management practices improved productivity and profits, and so, between
2008 and 2010, they conducted a large field experiment in India. They approached large, multi-plant Indian textile firms and divided them into two groups. One group – the treatment group – was given five months of extensive management consulting by a large international consulting firm. This included a month of diagnosis, where the consulting firm would find opportunities for improvement, followed by four months of intensive support for the implementation of these strategies. In contrast, the other group – the control group – received only one month of diagnostic consulting, but no intensive follow-up. At the end of the study, in 2011, the researchers tested the performance of the firms in the two groups. The results,
published in The Quarterly Journal of Economics in 2013, were quite remarkable. Even with just four months of follow-up, those in the treatment group saw an increase of 11 % in productivity, and an increase in annual profitability of about $230,000. Interestingly, firms also spread these management improvements from their treatment plants to other plants they owned, creating positive spill-overs that resulted in returns that far outstripped the initial investment. What made the difference? The authors suggest two reasons for the improvements. Firstly, owners delegated greater decisionmaking power over hiring, investment and pay to their plant managers. “This happened in large part because the improved collection and dissemination of
INDWE
/71
Not only was worker productivity higher in the treatment group, but treated firms continued to use consulting services in the years following the initial intervention, not only improving their operational management practices, but also their marketing practices. information that was part of the change process enables owners to monitor their plant managers better.” Secondly, the extensive data collection necessary for quality control, for example, led to a rapid increase in computer use. Better information management resulted in better performance. THE FOLLOW-UP STUDY The concern with the study, though, was that it failed to measure the persistence in performance. Did the differences between the treatment and the control group wither away as soon as the management consultants left, or did they persist for a month, a year, or even longer? To answer this question, almost the same team of authors returned to India in 2017 to measure the performance of the firms eight years after the initial intervention. Their results appeared in an NBER working paper in February. It seems that management practices do persist. Despite the fact that several firms in both the treatment and control group dropped some of the management practices that were initially proposed by the consultants, the differences between the two groups were still large. Worker productivity, for example, is 35 % higher in the treatment group compared to the control group.
72/
INDWE
The spill-over effects, in particular, were still there. In fact, in most cases, the plants that did not receive treatment but were part of the same firm were indistinguishable from the plants that did receive management consulting services. As the authors note: “While few management practices had demonstrably spread across the firms in the study, many had spread within firms, from the experimental plants to the nonexperimental plants, suggesting limited spill-overs between firms but large spillovers within firms.” The authors were also able to collect information on the reasons certain management practices were dropped over the period of eight years. Three reasons were frequently mentioned: • the new management practices faded when the plant manager left the firm; • when the directors, notably the CEO and chief financial officer, were too busy; and • when the practice was not commonly used in many other firms. “The first two reasons highlight the importance of key employees within the firm for driving management practices, while the latter emphasises the importance of beliefs,” the study states. There were other surprising consequences of intervention too. Not only was worker productivity higher in
the treatment group, but treated firms continued to use consulting services in the years following the initial intervention, not only improving their operational management practices, but also their marketing practices. Management consultants often get a bad rap, but random control trials like these – experiments that are costly and time consuming – clearly demonstrate the advantages, in profits and productivity, of investing in good management practices. Successful firms thrive because of good managers. The key is to hang on to them, empower them with the ability to make decisions, and free up their time.

RE-VIVO-LUTION! “Familiarity breeds contempt” is an expression often used when boredom sets in, be it a relationship, a product, or a regular event. However, when it comes to the newly launched Volkswagen Polo Vivo – the previous Polo, but with enhancements – it’s actually a case of “familiarity breeds content”. Text: Bernard K Hellberg Images © Quickpic
WHY SO POPULAR? As the only locally built model in the competitive AO segment, the Vivo – which is only available in hatch configuration – not only provides mechanical reliability, reasonable performance and a fairly decent specification level, but also serves as a considerable boost to the Eastern Cape economy, with nearly 76 % of all parts sourced from local suppliers. Buyers – and more than 2,000 of these loyal Volkswagen supporters sign up for one of these cars every month, admittedly with some generous support from the rental industry who know a good vehicle when they see one – will seldom be persuaded to leave the brand.
This popularity, I believe, is based on the time-honoured principles of value for money, and a design which has remained timelessly inoffensive. WHAT’S NEW? Volkswagen SA, being fully aware of the fact that people will be tempted to refer to the latest Vivo as the previous Polo – which it is – has refreshed this “new” model with a sharper front and rear design. Styling enhancements are muted and consist of new alloy wheels (in the high-end Highline and GT), new front and rear bumpers to make the Vivo appear wider, as well as the new instrument cluster for that familiar Volkswagen “feel”.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE Although launched at the coast where normally-aspirated engines do not suffer the 17 % power loss one experiences on the Highveld, the tried and tested 1.4-l engines, in either 55 or 63 kW configuration, or the impressive 81 kW 1.0-l turbo reminded me, yet again, why the Vivo sells in such vast numbers. And also why it has such a loyal following. The 1.6-l produces 77 kW and is available in all three specification levels. Buyers may choose between a six-speed manual transmission, or the Tiptronic automatic version. It’s capable of a highly illegal 188 km/h top speed, and has a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.1 l/100 km.
INDWE
/75
Steering response on all the models was immediate, and the directional stability is so good, even gusty conditions could not unbalance the cars. This model’s suspension setup also felt slightly firmer under real road conditions, whereas the 1.4-l versions provided a more comfortable ride. Steering response on all the models was immediate, and the directional stability is so good, even gusty conditions could not unbalance the cars. The brakes, with discs in front and rather old-fashioned drums in the rear, performed adequately and, obviously, enjoy the additional ABS benefits expected of a modern vehicle. STEP INSIDE With the steering wheel and seats the predominant contact points between individual and machine, it’s vital that designers and engineers get it just right – as they have successfully done in the case of the Vivo. Firm, yet not uncomfortable, the front seats are well shaped and hold the occupants in place under brisk cornering. Want the perfect driving position? Enjoy the advantages of a perfectly-shaped smallish diameter and fairly thick rim steering-wheel which is adjustable for reach as well as height. This is yet more proof that Volkswagen was serious about building an entry-level car – or, as they say on the Cape Flats, a “starter pack” – that still carries with it an aura of quality and of offering more than the asking price would indicate. The sound system, from basic to sophisticated touchscreen, impressed with pure sound and ease of operation, while the younger, smartphone-toting generation will enjoy the Android and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
76/
INDWE
FINAL SAY The new Volkswagen Polo Vivo, whether a 1.0 turbo GT or one of the other models, will continue to rate highly and sell in vast numbers – not only to individuals, but also to the rental industry. Its design is timeless, performance more than adequate, roominess and comfort are part of the deal, and pride of ownership is a given. Are there minor irritations? Certainly – starting with the manual adjustment of the
side mirrors. Those silly little pencil stubs, and the need to put your back out of joint while attempting to adjust the mirror on the left, are unworthy of Volkswagen. The warranty is good for three years and/or 120,000 km, but maintenance and service plans are optional – an unfortunate omission. Despite this, the Vivo is a great not-so-little vehicle and worthy of serious consideration as a reliable and attractive city car that will also serve you well as a long-distance cruiser.

A SPORT Lexus NX 300 F Sport
Lexus introduced the NX just three years ago, but the luxury compact SUV has proven so popular for the brand, that it now represents a smidge under 25 % of all Lexus vehicles sold in South Africa. Bernie Hellberg recently sampled the upgraded rangetopping NX 300 F Sport. Text: Bernard Hellberg Sr Images © Quickpic
Three years is almost a lifetime in car years, so for 2018, Lexus has gifted its mid-size NX crossover a mild refresh, as well as a somewhat new moniker – at least for the petrol only version. In essence an upscale Toyota with RAV underpinnings, the NX is Lexus’ secondbest-selling vehicle here, trailing the significantly larger LX, and leading the RX off the dealer floor.
CHANGE HAS COME Although not significantly so. The car formerly known as the NX 200t will now be called the NX 300, while the hybrid version remains the NX 300h. When it went on sale in 2015, the NX 200t was the first Lexus to feature the brand’s new direct-injected, 2.0-litre, turbocharged inline-four engine. And the same 175 kW power plant continues
to power three of the four models in the NX 300 range now. The NX 300h hybrid returns with the 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle, four-cylinder engine, which combines with two electric motors to produce 145 kW. For the 2018 model year, the entry NX 300 E swaps its all-wheel-drive system in favour of a front-wheel-drive layout. EX and F Sport models have kept their AWD abilities, as has the 300h, which uses the
INDWE
/79
engine to power the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission, while the electric motors drive the rear wheels. Styling changes are minimal but are especially noticeable from the front. Be warned: If you did not like the razor-sharp styling of the previous NX, you’ll likely not enjoy this one either. On the NX 300 and NX 300h, the vast, gaping grille now extends lower than before, making the Lexus spindle grille even more prominent. The grille on the stylised F Sport model gets a more complex mesh pattern. Both new grille designs are now flanked by air intakes, that enhance engine and brake cooling, and all models get redesigned LED headlights. At the rear are slightly wider taillights, and creases in the tailgate now mimic the spindle shape of the grille. A redesigned bumper has larger tailpipe openings on the F Sport, and there’s a more prominent rear diffuser on the other models. SUPERIOR INTERIOR Inside, you’ll find the same, inviting wrap-around cockpit, but with a few new features. Steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are now standard, as is an 8” infotainment screen. Also par for the
80/
INDWE
interior course – from the EX trim equipped with satellite navigation and higher – is a 10.3” infotainment screen, the largest in the segment. All trim levels get a new, larger console-mounted touchpad and wireless smartphone charger, while heated seats are standard on all but the base model NX. The F Sport adds ventilation to its leatherupholstered seats. Given the Lexus’ class-leading progressive looks and appreciably high level of standard specification, the absence of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is conspicuous. Instead, Lexus has incorporated its own Enform operating system, which was introduced on the LC 500 last year. HOW SHE HANDLES In general, the suspension has been upgraded across all the trim levels, including revised shocks and suspension component bushings on models with conventional suspension, and an updated version of the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), now available on the F Sport. The revised suspension combines with sharp, well-weighted steering to provide a composed and well-controlled ride, while the drive mode selector now comprises five possible selections – Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and now also Custom. With the latter, the driver can now programme variations in the powertrain, electric power steering, AVS, and air-conditioning settings.
82/
INDWE
In typical Lexus fashion, the NX interior is brilliantly well isolated from any roadand wind noise, and big bumps are muted to gentle thumps by the time they reach the occupants. As before, the Lexus’ turbocharged engine provides enough mid-range torque to get you past slower traffic easily enough. On paper, the hybrid NX 300h is not quite as zippy as its petrol-only brethren, but in return for its slightly more laborious acceleration, you get better fuel economy – a 6.0 l/100 km average, compared to 7.1 for the 300. There are a few new standard driver assists, including cruise control, lane-
departure warning with lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and automatic wipers on all models. New assist systems on the F Sport model include rear traffic alert with automatic braking, and blindspot monitoring. FINAL SAY Lexus claims the NX is designed to attract younger drivers, and it certainly is more luxurious, sportier and more powerful than the RAV on which it is based. At R789,700 the F Sport variant is the most appealing, with its aggressive styling, high level of trim, and adaptive suspension set-up.

Anyone? The Evolution of Golf
The game of golf has evolved dramatically over time. It is believed to have originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. The aim was to hit a pebble around a course of dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick. Centuries later, the game continues to shift and evolve, and today it is completely different from the days of Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. It has even changed significantly since Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were competing for majors. Text: Veruska De Vita Images © Golf Ads & iStockphoto.com
TIME TO GO CLUBBING In the same vein, the purpose of the golf clubhouse has changed – quite dramatically, some would argue. For one, the golf club is no longer a “boys’ club”. It has become a place for socialising, for both young and old, as well as for families. It is now part and parcel of a particular lifestyle. More women have taken up the sport; the clubhouse hosts events, lunches and dinners where families with children are welcome; and estates have been built on and around golf courses. As such, the sport, as well as its accoutrements, have become more of a lifestyle. You no longer need to be a golfer nor play a round of golf to visit the golf club. Francois Swart, GM of Randpark Golf Course, says that the biggest aspect of change from a golf club perspective is
84/
INDWE
that it has become significantly more of a family environment. “It’s not just about golf anymore, and golf clubs are adding other lifestyle activities for those who want to enjoy the club environment for purposes other than for a round of golf. A day out at the golf course or the club has become a family choice. Nowadays it’s family income versus the single income of the past, so there is combined decisionmaking in terms of leisure and lifestyle. “The industry has adapted and changed for other reasons. ADS AND APPROACH SHOTS And what about advertising in the golf environment? This has also become part and parcel of the game and the lifestyle. So much so that many luxury brands have taken to advertising on the golf course in order to communicate to this new market. Johan Scholtz of Golf Ads, a media company that specialises in advertising in the golf environment, explains that the golf club and course provide the perfect opportunity for brands wanting to advertise to this very specific group of people. “People who frequent golf clubs like to know about new cars on the market, travel deals, investment products, new property developments, and other luxury goods that fit in with their way of

life, whether they are golfing-related or aspirational. For brands, the golf course offers a captive environment. People spend hours socialising or playing a game, they are relaxed, they’re having fun and they are open to advertising messaging, especially if it is relevant to them,” he explains. According to Scholtz, Handicaps Network Africa statistics for 2016 show that there are over 140,000 registered golfers in the country – not including the friends and family who frequent golf clubs with them – and 465 golf clubs, with the highest concentration found in KwaZulu-Natal. NO LONGER PAR FOR THE COURSE Golf course design is also evolving. According to Golf’s 2020 Vision: The HSBC Report, Gary Player is quoted as saying that we will be seeing a lot changes in the future to make rounds of golf shorter and courses more accessible to the everyday golfer. “For golf to grow, there will have to be ways to play that will not take nearly as long to complete a round. Time is of the essence to everyone. We have the responsibility to design and build enjoyable courses for the masses, not just the low handicapper or professional,” Player says. The report also states that golf professionals and course designers internationally are giving more consideration to keeping things ecofriendly, including carbon-offsetting and sustainability. In the report Gary Player comments: “It is important to utilise the natural features and native plants,

grasses and trees, not only because it will minimise the impact, but also the maintenance costs. I am thankful to see that most designers around the world are taking the idea of conserving the natural environment very seriously.” It is also predicted that the new generation of golfers will be younger and fitter. The sport is already driving fashion – think golf shorts and loafers – and along with becoming more mainstream, the game will only grow and benefit from this. For golfers and those considering taking up the sport, there is no doubt that the future is bright and the grass is most definitely greener.
The hidden ‘Jewel of the Garden Route’ The Kingswood Golf Estate is perfectly placed between the Fancourt Links and George Golf Course at the very heart of the Garden Route’s golf hub. From its perfect blend of design and scenery, to its temperate weather, you’re certain to find Kingswood’s Championship Golf Course a unique challenge, and one you’ll want to take up again and again. If you ask the locals, they will tell you that Kingswood has the best greens on the Garden Route and this is one of the main reasons why it is often frequented by the Sunshine Tour Players when they are not on tour. The design is inspired by the Home of Golf, St Andrews (the Old Course), in Scotland with its links style open fairways, undulating greens and traditional pot bunkers. There is no other course in South Africa like it, which makes it a must-play if you are travelling in the area. On the first nine you should be off to a good start as the course follows the spectacular topography of the landscape. The tee boxes have recently been redone and the course is in
mint condition. The greens are consistently fast, so soft hands and finesse are the key to making your putts. Your scores should be good on the front nine, as the back nine is a challenge that’s ‘better than most’. From the tenth, the views turn to the Outeniqua Mountains and they are breathtakingly beautiful. Your golf experience builds as each hole is different with its own nuances, trickery and challenges. The last four holes known as ‘Humblers Corner’ are a challenge second to none; and if you can make it through here by parring all four holes on a competition day with no ‘gives’, then introduce yourself to the management team and collect a free round voucher. Either way, this ultimate golf challenge will keep you coming back for more. This course is truly the Jewel of the Garden Route and should not be missed on any golfing tour.

Books Must Read
Artemis By Andy Weir The #1 New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible adventure set in the near future. Jazz is a small-time criminal, subsidising work as a porter on the moon with smuggling a little contraband. But it’s never enough. When she’s offered the chance to get rich quick she jumps at it. But planning the perfect crime in 1/6th gravity was never going to be easy, especially as there is a conspiracy at the heart of Artemis. At first it was about the money, then it was about control. Now it’s about survival.
65 Years of Friendship By George Bizos 65 Years of Friendship tells the heartrending story of a remarkable friendship between two remarkable men: world-renowned human-rights lawyer George Bizos, and Nelson Mandela. The two met as students at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1948. They would later become legal colleagues, and Mandela would become George Bizos’ most famous client soon after, for Bizos was part of his legal defence during the famous Treason Trial, and again during the Rivonia Trial. After seeing his friend sentenced to life imprisonment, Bizos became Mandela’s lifeline, navigating the complicated political network of the Struggle. In this touching homage to their friendship, George Bizos tells a fascinating tale of two men whose work affected the lives of all South Africans.

Sound in Motion Paying homage to the legendary turntable models of the 1960s and ’70s, Thorens has reinterpreted the sub-chassis turntable with state-of-the-art, ground-up development using the latest materials. Highest fidelity and dynamics were their main priorities during the development of their new turntable series. However, they also placed great importance on user-friendliness, timeless aesthetics, as well as flexible configuration and upgrade options, while retaining the traditional sub-chassis design. The launch comprises three new models – TD 903, TD 905 and TD 907 – all of which share the three-spring sub-chassis design that is so highly regarded among vinyl lovers. Carefully applied weights allow the three springs to be distributed evenly, with the same tension for each spring, thus ensuring true piston motion of the sub-chassis. This efficiently isolates the turntable from all sources of external vibrations. Thorens turntables are available from // WWW.HOMEMATION.CO.ZA.

Sibongile Makhanya Cabin Crew Member Length of Service With SA Express: 15 months Tell us more about yourself. I am a very bubbly person. I love cooking, reading, travelling, fashion, makeup and all things girly. I am family-oriented, have a great sense of humour, and thought I can come across as a very serious person, I am actually very friendly. What is your favourite part of your job? The flexible hours. What do you find most challenging about your job? Waking up at 03h00. I can never get used to it, and that’s my beauty sleep out the window! What do you like about working for SA Express? Definitely my fellow crew members. It’s great to work with people who make you feel like you’re not working, even though you are. It makes it easier to come to work and just enjoy my working environment. What would people find surprising about your job? That we are actually more than just “chicken or beef”. We study hard each year for our recurrent exams, and we have to do fire-fighting, aviation medicine, and other safety-related courses to make sure that we stay current and knowledgeable about our work environment and the safety of our passengers. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters on board? I actually came to work for my 05h00 sign-on, with my makeup all done and on point, only to find out that I was off that day! And it’s happened twice already.

The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. Passenger Letters Dear SA Express Recently, 45 of our nervous club members participated in the Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City competition. We travelled as a group from Cape Town to East London with SA Express, and for some it was quite nerve-wracking to travel with their beloved triathlon bicycles. SA Express took great care of our luggage and our bikes all arrived safely. The check-in process was efficient and the flights were on time – a key expectation fulfilled! It is such a great pleasure to know there is this professional service available for athletes to travel safely around the country with their equipment. Thank you, SA Express, for providing such great service. We now look forward to our next race in Durban in June 2018 – and will definitely be flying SA Express again! Kind regards Steve Attwell
Congratulations to Steve Attwell who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a Samsonite Flux 55 cm spinner suitcase valued at R2,699.
Hi SA Express Every time I think of flying I get butterflies in my stomach. On 2nd February, as we were about to take off from the Bram Fischer Airport (in Bloemfontein), I must have had the most terrified look on my face because the flight attendant stopped to ask if I was ok. Because I didn’t want to admit to him that I was really scared, I said that I was fine. With a big smile and in a calm voice he said: “Sir, rest assured, you are in safe hands.” It made me feel much better, although that uneasy feeling I had didn’t completely go away. Then, soon after take-off, I realised that SA Express has been doing this for a long time and I am the one who needs to learn how to remain calm. It’s easier said than done, but when someone speaks to you with such confidence, that alone is reassuring. We landed safely in Johannesburg and I even requested to take a picture with the flight attendant. Thank you for the professionalism shown. Caring for your passengers really builds good relationships and I will forever speak highly about you – I am your ambassador now. Kind regards, Tefo Mokubung
