CONNECT WITH CAPE TOWN Getting around with MyCiTi With MyCiTi, Cape Town’s popular scheduled bus service, you will be going places.

ome of the most-visited and breathtakingly beautiful places in Cape Town are within easy reach of MyCiTi’s expanding network. The world-famous beaches of the Atlantic coast, from Hout Bay to Melkbosstrand, are served by a number of MyCiTi routes. Get a myconnect card MyCiTi does not accept cash on the buses. All passengers aged four and over need their own myconnect card to travel. Get these for R30 at MyCiTi station kiosks and selected retailers and load with money to pay for your travel. Fares are based on the
distance you travel, with free transfers at stops and stations within a period of 45 minutes. Visitors on a budget should note that fares are more expensive in the morning and afternoon peak periods (06:45 – 08:00 and 16:15 – 17:30 on weekdays). Outside of these times you pay the off-peak Saver rate. You have two options to load money on your card, Standard or Mover. Load any amount and pay the Standard fare and also make purchases of up to R200 at retailers accepting debit and credit cards, or load Mover

Connecting with Table Mountain The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company now offers visitors a free MyCiTi shuttle to Table Mountain. Catch it from the Lower Tafelberg stop on Kloof Nek to the Cableway entrance and back again, and enjoy one of the world’s famous natural wonders. The free shuttle links with services to Camps Bay and the central city, with onward connections to Cape Town’s other must-see destinations – the V&A Waterfront, Century City, West Coast beaches, Atlantic Seaboard, Clifton and scenic Hout Bay. To transfer to and from the free service, get a myconnect card from the Cableway kiosk or a single-trip card from the vending machine at the SanParks office near the Lower Tafelberg stop.
Connecting with the Airport There is a MyCiTi station right outside the arrival and departures terminal at Cape Town International Airport travelling to and from the Civic Centre station in the heart of the city every 30 minutes. At both stations you can get a single-trip card (R85) for journeys including the Airport service. If you are arriving in Cape Town for a visit, and you
would like to use MyCiTi during your stay, it is recommended that you get a myconnect card (R30) at the Airport station and load it with money or fare-saving Mover points. From the Civic Centre there are easy connections to the entire MyCiTi network of routes, with transfers through the spacious station with luggage-friendly level-boarding platforms. If you have purchased a single-
trip card it includes an onward journey on any MyCiTi bus from the Civic Centre station.

Nevertheless, I can safely say that as I reflect on 2015, I do so with tremendous pride and heartfelt gratitude. In keeping with the spirit of positive retrospection, I felt it important to start by thanking each and every one of you for your enduring support during the course of the year. It is phenomenal to be in a position where one can recognise and thank all of our regular passengers, as well as welcome new passengers to the SA Express family. As an airline, we understand that the services we offer are only as good as the last experience that you had on board an SA Express flight. Therefore, our commitment is to provide exceptional customer service throughout our company, whether it is your first contact with our customer care agents, interacting with our ground staff at the airport, or being welcomed on board by our crew. We appreciate that our customers are the most important element of our
business, and the very reason why we get out of bed in the morning. I would also like to acknowledge and extend a heartfelt thank you to the SA Express team, without whom we would not have been able to deliver on our promise of exceptional customer service, nor have maintained our excellent safety record. It is because of the staff’s unwavering commitment to this organisation that we were able to increase our route network by introducing flights to Mahikeng and Sun City in the North West Province, and were able to increase capacity on our Hoedspruit route by adding additional frequency. However, the biggest feather in our cap was to be voted the second largest regional airline in the Africa/Middle East Region in an independent survey conducted by Airline Business. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our advertisers for their support over the past year, and we look forward to working with you again in the coming year. This December, Port Elizabeth plays host to this living legend of African music, when he will perform one show at The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino.This iconic artist is best known for his Grammy-nominated hit single,“Grazing in the Grass”, which sold over 4 million copies in 1968 and made him an international star. Bits & Pieces Worth Its Weight in Gold To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the South African Mint’s multiple international award-winning Natura 24-carat gold coin series, a new coin set has recently been released. The set, comprising four coins, depicts the black-backed jackal and various aspects of its behaviour. It also forms part of the themed series “Nocturnal Hunters”, which was originally introduced in 2014. The 2015 Natura series is available as individual coins, as a set comprising of all four coins, or as a limited launch set edition that is specially packaged in an attractive, custom-designed wooden box with a beautifully designed sun dial gift and booklet. A portion of the proceeds from its sales will be donated to wildlife conservation. SA's Oldest Building in Good Hands South Africa’s oldest building, the Castle of Good Hope, is due to undergo a bit of nip and tuck when renovation specialists GVK-Siya Zama start repairs on the iconic building. Over a period of 21 months, the seven buildings within the castle walls will be repainted and have new carpentry installed. The deteriorated waterproofing on the roofs and ramparts will be replaced, and the stone moat walls and banks will be repaired. The project also includes the refurbishment of murals, and renovations to the Dolphin Pool, as well as specialist plaster repairs. GVK-Siya Zama has hired and trained local people and provided them with jobs for the duration of the project. To date, over 130 people have been employed and trained as painters, bricklayers and carpenters, with 45 undergoing apprenticeships with the Department of Public Works. The R84 million project is due to be completed in September 2016.

The heritage building, originally built in 1911 to store livestock and vegetables, has a unique interior architecture. We had only just left the lodge, the sun was barely up and we were still wrapped in blankets against the early morning chill. And then there he was, walking sedately along the road – the same male cheetah we had spotted the day before. Then we had happened upon him lazing in the sunshine on the bank of one of the reserve’s dams. Occasionally he had looked up when a sound or a movement caught his attention, but it was apparent that food was not his main priority that afternoon, lying as he was stretched out languidly, nodding off in the warm rays of the setting sun.

Today his mind was on more pressing matters, though. He was looking thin and was most definitely on the prowl. He moved swiftly, stopping often to sniff the air and scan the plains around us. We lost him in a thick wooded patch for a while, but he soon re-emerged, briskly moving through the terrain on the hunt. After we had our fill of his beautifully spotted coat and sinuous walk, we pushed on, hoping that his tummy would be full the next time we saw him. Thrilled with not one, but two cheetah sightings in two days, we would’ve been greedy to have expected a third, but not 20 minutes later, we spotted something moving in the grass. Then, suddenly, it was joined by another, and then a third – three tawny coloured fluff balls with inquisitive eyes and petite kitten faces. We had stumbled across a female cheetah with three of her cubs. Mum lay nearby relaxing under a tree, always vigilant, casting a protective eye on the little ones, who explored and romped and eventually collapsed in a heap together – a veritable cuddle puddle of cubs. It was a cheetah filled few days, but then I have yet to visit an Eastern Cape game reserve without seeing at least one. While they fade into the scrubland of the more well known game viewing areas of the north, here, the rolling plains suit their hunting style to a T, and the sparser vegetation offers visitors a much better chance of spotting them. In fact, there are a lot of things that differentiate game viewing in the Eastern Cape from other parts of the country. The indigenous Euphorbia trees stand luminous green in the landscape as they point their fleshy fingers to the sky. In flowering season aloes add splashes of orange to the picture, while the pungent smell of wild herbs and flowers add a sweet

perfume to the air that brushes past you on game drives. In Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, just outside of Grahamstown, you can traverse a host of different landscapes in just one drive, with grassy plains, rocky plateaus and riverine forest – all home to a huge variety of birdlife which is often easier to spot thanks to the lack of thick bushland scrub. In fact, we spotted a Ground woodpecker – a bird that the twitcher on our game drive had spent over 20 years looking for. As one can imagine, there was much excitement that day, and much toasting of the sighting with champagne over breakfast. A breakfast, I might add that we were surprised with it in the middle of the bush – one complete with white bedecked tables, wine glasses and Proteas (quirkily arranged in empty Lucky Star pilchard tins), and a buffet table groaning under the weight of breads and cheeses, pastries, and cold meats, while our chef whipped up bacon and eggs on the braai. While elsewhere the highlight of a game drive may be to spot the Big Five (all of which also call Kwandwe home), here it is the smaller, often rarer, animals that really are something to write home about. Evening game drives in particular will reward you with scurrying scrub hares and rock rabbits, as well as the possibility of some truly special sightings, such as the enigmatic shaggy aardwolf or very pretty bat eared foxes. You may be lucky enough to spot a serval or a genet, and if the stars are really in your favour, perhaps even the secretive and reclusive aardvark with his distinctive snout and clawed paws. No matter what you spot, you are guaranteed to return to your lodge brimming with stories to share, either after a sumptuous buffet breakfast, or a romantic four course dinner. And spending time in the lodge is just as exciting as being out

so that you can soak up the beautiful spekboom and acacia bedecked view, either from the king sized bed, a comfy bean bag in the lounge, a deck chair outside, or from the blissful cool of your plunge pool. Being the only fenced lodge on the reserve, you have the freedom to wander around at leisure smelling the wild flowers, which also makes it ideal for families with children. In fact, kiddies are well catered for here, with a special play room bursting with games and entertainment, as well as specially planned activities, including fun in the kitchen with the resident chefs. That said, the lodge still makes a stylish and quiet retreat for those without children too. Wherever you choose to stay, all four lodges offer that same warm service and genuine Eastern Cape hospitality, with staff – from the servers in the restaurants, to the rangers and spotters – who go out of their way to make every guest’s stay something special, including ours. We left stuffed with delicious food, utterly relaxed from afternoons spent luxuriating in our beautiful suite and being out in nature, and full of stories of all the amazing animal sightings we had had. There was only one thing left on my wish list – to spot that elusive aardvark. But then, that just gives me an excuse (like I need one) to come back again! Le jour était à peine levé et nous étions encore emmitouflés dans nos couvertures, à l’abri du froid matinal. Juste devant nous se promenait tranquillement le même guépard que nous avions repéré le jour précèdent. On l’avait trouvé étalé de tout son long, en train de se prélasser et de somnoler au soleil sur la berge de l’un des points d’eau de la réserve. Indwe 41
Aujourd’hui il semblait se concentrer sur une question plus pressante. Il paraissait bien mince et était à la recherche d’une proie. Il se déplaçait rapidement, s’arrêtant pour flairer l’air et scruter les environs. Nous l’avons suivi un bon moment jusqu’à ce qu’il disparaisse dans la broussaille, espérant bien le revoir bientôt rassasié. Nous étions aux anges d’avoir pu voir un guépard deux jours d’affilée et ne pensions pas avoir la chance que cela se produise une troisième fois, encore moins vingt minutes plus tard ! Quelque chose bougea dans l’herbe et l’on découvrit bientôt trois boules de poils de couleur fauve à la tête de chaton et au regard inquisiteur. Nous étions tombés sur une femelle avec trois petits. La maman se prélassait sous un arbre alors que les petits exploraient les environs en s’amusant, pour finir par s’endormir empilés les uns sur les autres. Nous avons eu la chance de voir plusieurs guépards pendant ce séjour mais je dois dire que je n’ai jamais mis les pieds dans une réserve du Cap Oriental sans en voir au moins un. Les plaines onduleuses sont parfaites pour leur style de chasse et la végétation peu abondante permet aux visiteurs de les repérer plus facilement. C’est une des

nombreuses choses qui différencie le Cap Oriental des autres régions du pays pour ce qui est d’observer les animaux sauvages. Les euphorbes indigènes brillent d’un vert lumineux en toile de fond et pendant la floraison, les fleurs d’aloès oranges ajoutent des touches de couleur au décor alors que des fleurs sauvages embaument l’air de leurs senteurs sucrées. Dans la Réserve animalière privée de Kwandwe qui se trouve dans les environs de Grahamstown, on a l’occasion, lors d’une seule balade en voiture, de traverser de nombreux paysages comme des plaines herbeuses, des plateaux rocheux et des forêts riveraines. Tous ces sites abritent une grande variété d’oiseaux qui sont souvent relativement faciles à voir grâce à l’absence de brousse dense. On a même réussi à apercevoir un pic laboureur qui se trouve être un oiseau qu’un ornithologue amateur de notre group recherchait depuis plus de 20 ans. Comme on peut l’imaginer, cette découverte fut célébrée au champagne lors du petit déjeuner. Ce fut un petit déjeuner de brousse étonnant, servi sur des tables ornées de nappes blanches, pourvues de verres à vin et regorgeant de pains, de fromages, de viennoiseries et de charcuterie, alors que le chef de cuisine préparait du bacon

Arriver à repérer les Big Five est généralement le but d’une sortie en brousse (et ils se trouvent tous les cinq sur Kwandwe) mais ici, c’est surtout la découverte de petits animaux souvent plus rares qui réjouit le plus. Les sorties du soir en 4x4 sont souvent très gratifiantes puisque l’on peut observer des animaux exceptionnels tels les loups de terre à long poil (appartenant à la famille de la hyène) ou les renards à oreilles de chauve-souris. Vous aurez peutêtre la chance d’apercevoir un serval ou une genette, et si le ciel vous sourit vraiment alors vous pourriez voir le oryctérope du Cap (ou cochon de terre) solitaire dont le museau est si caractéristique. Quoi que vous voyiez, vous pouvez être certains d’avoir de nombreuses histoires à raconter à votre retour de balade. Passer du temps dans le lodge est tout aussi passionnant que de faire une sortie en 4x4 à la recherche d’animaux. La réserve offre aux hôtes quatre options d’hébergement spécifiques. The KZN Christmas Market Festival Hillcrest The KZN Christmas Market Festival is set to be the biggest Christmas market KZN has ever seen, with a unique selling approach. This market will not see individual stall holders selling their wares. Rather, the Christmas shopper is welcomed to a festive auditorium filled with tables upon tables of hand crafted, high quality gifts, décor, toys, nibbles, and all things magical that will lay claim to that niggling Christmas bonus gnawing at your purse. Diverging from the standard open air market theme, they have adopted more of a retail layout, with shopping baskets and credit card facilities. Shop to your heart’s content while the little ones are entertained. They will also have a delicious range of fresh foods from the Food Court. The market aims to create a platform for local craftsmen from across KwaZulu-Natal to showcase their talent and sell to a wider audience than usual markets allow. The Peach Pip Christmas Markets Kommetjie This special market happens twice a month, usually on the second and last Saturday of each month, and is held at Rodgers Fruiterers in Kommetjie. This relaxed, but vibey market offers a selection of food, clothing, gardening, crafts, books and more, as well as live music to add to the festive atmosphere. The inspiration behind the market was the late Mrs Angie Rodgers, according to one of the organisers: “She would welcome everybody into her home and one of her many desires was to have her own market. She had many ideas as to how to bring the communities together and the planning for the market was in the pipeline for years, but somehow it all just came together shortly after her passing last year. The Boomslang Tree Canopy Walkway is 130 m long and 12 m high, and offers a bird’s eye view of the gardens, plus it is included in the admission fee. There are also open-air summer concerts on Sundays, so keep an eye open for the details and book ahead (Ticket Office: +27 21 799 8782). • Green Point Urban Park (access to the park is via Bill Peters drive, Bay Road or Helen Suzman Boulevard) is a favourite picnic spot for apartment-dwellers in the city. It’s a fantastic place to get some fresh air, and boasts an outdoor gym, a play park, an adventure park, and an outdoor labyrinth. Bring along your bikes and trikes. Entrance is free. • The Company Gardens in the Cape Town CBD offers a historical walk between Parliament and the Iziko South African Museum, as well as lawns where you can hang out with the squirrels. You’ll find them at the top of Adderley Street. It’s also worth popping into the museum and the South African National Gallery, both of which are within a five minute walk of each other.

At the end of a long year, everyone could do with a little timeout, which is exactly why we went in search of our favourite country getaways, complete with their own spas for some added pampering. Cascade Country Manor, Paarl Cape Town may boast its castle, but who knew that the little Winelands town of Paarl once had its very own royal connection? Prana Lodge Private Beach Estate and Spa A large Buddha sits outside the spa at Cintsa’s Prana Lodge. His tummy is round and full, and he is surrounded by lush gardens that are filled with flowers and birdsong. Most noticeable, though, is that he has a huge smile on his face. As the day heats up, the hotel’s seven suites serve as tranquil and cool havens. Each is aptly named after a different gem stone – turquoise, emerald, ruby – with colour schemes to match. Here you can dip into your plunge pool or snooze on your lounger in complete privacy. King size beds urge afternoon naps, while comfortable lounges are the perfect setting for afternoon tea – complete with a delicious morsel from the kitchen. The resident spa also serves as an oasis where you can opt for a host of stress-melting treatments and general pampering, before wandering over to the dining room for a healthy lunch. If it’s a long car journey, tell them about all the things they’ll see along the way.
Keep Them Occupied Fidgeting, quarrelling with siblings and the dreaded “Are we there yet?” can test your patience as a parent. South Africa has long been the ideal destination for adventure seeking nature lovers. The Garden Route, Winelands, beaches, game reserves – there is something for everyone who appreciates time in the great outdoors. One such activity that South Africa offers in abundance is hiking.

From coastal, laid-back walks, to more hardcore options that will see you holding onto chains for dear life while ascending a mountain, a myriad of choices await those wanting to don their hiking boots.
The Western Cape Platteklip Gorge leads up one of the most famous mountains in the world, Table Mountain, with spectacular views of the Mother City as a reward for those who make it to the summit. The route is strenuous because of the constant uphill, but well worth it when you reach the top. The hike can take anywhere between one to three hours – depending on how fit you are – and is about 3 km in length. The best time to conquer this gorge is on clear days, as the path can get slippery on rainy days, plus clear weather will ensure even better views. Probably one of Cape Town’s most well-known hikes is Lion’s Head. Less strenuous than Platteklip Gorge, Lion’s Head is a spiral climb that takes hikers about 669 m up the hill in about one to two hours. About halfway into the hike, there is a choice between ascending by way of using chains and ladders, and the less nerve-racking option of

simply continuing the walk. One of the best times to climb Lion’s Head is during full moon, as the view from the top is spectacular. The Garden Route, in turn, offers plenty of options when it comes to activities. It is therefore no wonder that it is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. The oldest hiking path in South Africa, the Otter Trail, is an event that brings many to this area. Spanning 43 km over five days, the trail goes through a variety of magnificent scenery. Dense forests, waterfalls, rocky outcrops, caves, and sandy beaches are just some of the views hikers get to experience during this adventure. As the trail is extremely popular, it is advised to book well ahead of time.
Gauteng If you are looking to take a break from the constant rush of city life in Joburg, then a trip to Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is a must. Only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, this reserve boasts mountain ranges, valleys, and grassy plains, with a variety of animals, including wildebeest, hartebeest, zebras, and hyenas. The 11,595 ha reserve is home to 66 km of hiking trails, and one can do anything between
KwaZulu-Natal The Elephant Coast is a haven for nature lovers because of its vast variety of landscapes, including its beautiful coastline. A number of hiking routes explore this area, one being the 44 km Amanzimnyama Trail in the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve. The hike takes four days, so it is suited for more experienced hikers who are used to carrying backpacks over rough terrain. Experiencing the Malangeni Forest and Shaida River is well worth the effort, though. The Drakensberg is not to be missed for dedicated

hikers. From valleys and lush forests, to cascading waterfalls and majestic mountains, the Drakensberg is famous for its natural beauty. One hiking option is the Amphitheatre Heritage Trail, which spans three days, and sees hikers cover around 25 km a day. This trail is perfect for those who are not exceptionally fit or experienced, and there are camps and lodges along the route to offer a hot bath and comfy bed for weary hikers.
The Eastern Cape “Unspoiled beauty� is the term that comes to mind when one experiences the vastness of the Eastern Cape. With 800 km of pristine coastline and a rich cultural diversity, this province is one of the most beautiful in South Africa. When it comes to hiking, most trails in the Eastern Cape are along the Wild Coast. One of the most popular hikes is the Wild Coast Meander, which sees adventurers spending six days and five nights walking the 56 km trail that meanders along the breathtaking coastline. This hike is ideal for people looking for an easy to moderate hiking experience, as the way consists of long stretches of beach, with the occasional river and rocky outcrop. There are hiking trails throughout South Africa that offer explorers some of the most beautiful views in the world, which is all the more reason to lace up those hiking boots.

a one to six day trail exploration. If you are keen for the latter, there are overnight hiking huts on the routes, as well as braai facilities. In the protected Magaliesberg area, 50 km outside of Joburg, is the Uitkyk Hiking Trail, which offers scenic views over the Hartbeesport Dam and the surrounding mountains. The trail starts at a fenced parking lot on Rissik Estates and goes beneath the R560 before climbing up the mountain. The 7.5 km hike will take about five hours, depending on your fitness levels, and is made up of laid-back, easy hiking, as well as some tougher sections. There is a simple route for first timers, as well as a more scenic option for experienced hikers. Braai facilities are available, so make a day of it and enjoy the beauty of the Magaliesberg.

Where there’s singing, there’s dancing. And where there’s rain, there’s water. Bringing all of that together on stage is Singin’ in the Rain, a world-class musical that opens this month in Cape Town.

It’s one of Hollywood’s iconic roles: Don Lockwood, first brought to life by Gene Kelly, who played the part for the 1952 MGM movie that’s widely heralded as cinema’s greatest musical. This month, award-winning actor Grant Almirall can be seen filling Kelly’s shoes in a stage adaptation of Singin’ in the Rain that’s spent much of 2015 touring internationally with its all-South African cast. Almirall, who was last seen as Frankie Valli in another hit musical, Jersey Boys, says it’s probably the hardest thing he’s ever done on stage. Aside from relentless choreography in a string of back-to-back numbers, there’s the daunting business of doing so on a water-soaked stage. Physically, this is among the most challenging roles in any musical, says resident director Anton Luitingh. “This is no old fashioned, fuddy-duddy version of Singin’ in the Rain. The songs are pumped up in tempo. It moves quickly and the transitions are incredibly fast.” The show captures the energy of the film, he says, which was intended to lift spirits in the wake of World War II, and was created specifically for a new generation of theatre-goer, one with demands for fast-paced, edgy entertainment. “That said,” says Luitingh, “while many big productions these days rely heavily on technology or animatronics, there are almost no gimmicks with this show. Instead, the audience

is looking at an empty filmic sound stage. It’s like a box that stays the same for the entire show. What makes it magical is what happens inside that box.” A major component of that magic is the gruelling dancing. “It’s pretty much about the performers going fulltilt, working super-hard to execute choreography that’s incredibly intense,” says Luitingh. “What people forget, too, is that for the movie, they would have had an entire day to shoot one number and the film crew could do it over and over again, cutting and taking a break whenever necessary, so that it looks perfect on screen,” says Almirall. “But when you put that on stage and follow the arc of the story, you become aware of how close some of the dance numbers are to one another. So to do this live on stage, you need serious stamina to get through it.” “I literally saw the actors’ bodies change in front of my eyes during the six weeks of rehearsals,” says Luitingh. “Everyone we cast looked physically different as we got closer to opening night – simply because of the energy expended during rehearsals, which is also when we saw a lot of pulled muscles, twisted ankles, and other injuries. The international approach to a dancer’s discipline is pretty relentless and merciless – it’s not a hobby, they’re athletes. Their bodies become like machines. And like professional athletes, they train every day.”

Adding another layer of difficulty for the dancers, while ramping up the show’s “wow” factor, is the production’s pivotal technical element: water. Some 12,000 litres of it, in fact, that’s used to create the illusion of rain falling at the end of Act One. This much-anticipated rain-dance scene is symbolic of the film’s joie de vivre. On stage, Luitingh says it’s designed as a kind of theme park moment when people seated in front row seats get splashed by the water Almirall kicks up as he dances. It’s the show’s only big showy effect, he says, and an important tribute to the original film. Creating this requires some serious engineering and technical wizardry. While having it rain is easily achieved with overhead nozzles, what’s trickier is preventing the stage itself from getting wet, while having sufficient water amass there to create pools for Almirall to splash around in. “It doesn’t just rain from above,” explains Luitingh. “The actual performance area is slightly sunken so that it can be filled with water. Water floods from underfoot while simultaneously coming down from above, and it all gathers in a shallow swimming pool in which the dancing happens. High-density plastic is used for everything that gets wet.” Luitingh explains that the flood pool is designed to drain itself at the end of the rain sequence, and the plastic dries fairly quickly after being wiped down during the interval, so the stage is completely water-free again for Act Two. The water, which is recycled after each downpour, is stored in a pair of massive tanks in the wings. The deluge also places demands on the wardrobe and props departments, says Luitingh, since everything that gets wet needs to be specially dried – in an offstage “hotbox” with humidifiers and dryers. “We have an entire set of wet weather costumes and shoes – the girls even do an imperceptible wig change just before they get rained on. And everything that gets wet is removed and shoved into the hotboxes so that it’s ready in time for the next show, which is sometimes a

few hours away.” Another technical element in the show is the use of black and white film sequences that echo scenes that have been performed live on stage. “These were incredibly tricky, because whatever the actors did when we shot those scenes way back in January must be recreated precisely on stage, in order to create the idea that what they’re doing on stage is being filmed and then seen immediately in the film footage. We had to shoot multiple versions of the film segments, using all the different combinations of Don Lockwood – Grant Almirall plus his two understudies – with the female lead and her understudies. There are a lot of permutations, because it’s impossible to predict who’ll be performing on the night, should there be an injury or illness.” And injuries do happen. Almirall fractured the fifth metatarsal in his foot in Singapore, knocking him out of performance for many weeks. With its high-stakes international schedule, the show must go on, though. And it did. “Every member of the ensemble has to be capable of filling in for a lead role,” says Luitingh. “Whoever lands the lead is simply the best of the best, but anyone who steps in needs to have all of the magic and ability of that lead performer – capable of filling Gene Kelly’s shoes for the night.”

For a country smack bang in the middle of safari territory, Zambia doesn’t get anywhere near the attention it deserves. Even its most famous attraction, the Victoria Falls, is usually visited from the Zimbabwe side. Yet Zambia has glorious wide open landscapes, massive herds of animals, beautiful safari lodges, intriguing markets, incredibly welcoming people, and remarkably few tourists, all of which serves to deliver a real taste of untamed Africa.

Zambia’s capital and commercial centre is Lusaka, one of the fastest-growing cities in central Africa. It boasts top quality hotels, good restaurants, and a decent nightlife. Look out for Freedom Statue, a sculpture of a man breaking his chains, dedicated to freedom fighters in the struggle for independence in 1964. The small National Museum houses contemporary Zambian paintings and sculpture, as well as archaeological and ethnographical exhibits. Kabwata Cultural Village is a good place to haggle for souvenirs. Close to the city is Munda Wanga, an environmental park with lovely botanical gardens and rescued wild animals, including pangolins and owls that were saved from being used for traditional medicine. Among the park’s residents are often lions and cheetahs, and the aim is to rehabilitate them for release back into the wild. There’s also a breeding programme for genets and serval cats. You probably won’t spend long in Lusaka before you head into the bush. The oldest safari operator in Zambia

National parks cover more than 30 % of the country, and in some remote rural areas village life has remained unchanged for centuries. It’s also one of the safest countries in the world to visit, and as a former British colony, English is widely spoken. South Luangwa National Park is Zambia’s premier wildlife destination with one of Africa’s highest concentrations of leopard, crocodiles and hippo, with more than 50 hippos for every kilometre of river. There are more than 400 species of birds, too. Yet it’s almost untouched, compared to game reserves in the neighbouring countries, and its guides are among the best in the world. Liuwa Plains National Park near the border with Angola is home to Africa’s second biggest wildebeest migration and, not surprisingly, attracts a wide variety of predators too. As well as lion, you might spot hyenas that have developed the unusual behaviour of hunting in packs of up to 50. Twitchers will love the variety of rare and endangered birds, with wattled cranes in flocks of hundreds.

is Norman Carr Safaris, founded by a pioneer who turned Africa’s traditional stalk-and-shoot tourism into the stalk, photograph and conserve variety. Norman Carr set up his first camp 65 years ago in partnership with the local Chief Nsefu and his people, involving the locals in managing the camp well before other companies followed suit. They also pioneered walking safaris, but it’s walking with a civilised touch, as the guides set up the daily camp ready for your arrival, including bush showers, delicious dinners, and tents fitted with comfortable beds. A highlight is a sleep-out, where you ignore the tent and sleep with only a mosquito net between you and the stars. For a water-based experience, the mighty Zambezi River is one of the best places for tiger fishing and canoe safaris. The Zimbabwean side of Lake Kariba has hundreds of houseboats, but there are only a few on the Zambian side, again delivering that sense of unspoilt, wild Africa, complete with glorious sunrises and sunsets. There are 17 waterfalls in Zambia, of which Victoria Falls is the most famous and most spectacular. The Falls are a short drive away from Livingstone, a historic town dating from 1905 with charming Edwardian buildings and a strong whiff

of old colonialism. The Falls are at their daunting best from February to May when the volume of water is mind-boggling. In October and November the water is lower, for panoramic views with no mist. Don’t worry about the scary name of the best viewpoint, Knife Edge Bridge. It’s safer than it sounds, and offers fabulous views of the Falls across the gorge. While you’re in Livingstone, make sure you visit the lovely museum. There are several fascinating displays showing life in a recreated village, as well as historic maps dating from 1690 and information about the fight for independence. It ends with David Livingstone memorabilia, including the famous explorer’s writings and gems like his now woefully inadequate medical bag. For a taste of rural Zambia, visit the Mukuni Cultural Village, a royal village founded in the 13th century and home to about 7,000 Leya people. The chief allows visitors to see how his people have lived for generations, and to learn about their customs. The villagers happily show you their huts and explain how they are built, introduce you to craftsmen and get you to taste some traditional foods and beer. For something a little racier, Wild Horizons runs a brilliant ziplining operation with nine lines spanning the gorges high above the Zambezi River.

The regulations governing travelling minors recently implemented by the South African Department of Home Affairs were put in place to prevent child trafficking. The regulations are fairly simple to follow if you have a regular nuclear family with married parents that are travelling through an airport together (everyone in the family needs valid passports and unabridged birth certificates that name the parents of the children). But what are the implications if your family is a little more unusual in structure, but just as excited about travelling abroad? Cheapflights.co.za did the data crunching on some tricky travelling scenarios using a great online app (www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/child-visa-checklist), to help you to navigate your way through the requirements so that you can enjoy a stress-free trip through immigration.
Scenario 1 A child is travelling with one parent, where the parents are divorced or legally separated, with specific parental rights and responsibilities described by a court. Documents required: • Valid passports for the travelling parent and child. • Valid visa, if one is required. • Unabridged birth certificate for the child. • One of the following: A parental consent affidavit, a court order granting full parental responsibilities to the travelling parent; a court order granted in terms of section 18(5) of the Children’s Act of 2005; or a letter of Special Circumstances issued by the Director General of Home Affairs.
Scenario 2 • • • •
An adopted child is travelling with their widowed parent. Documents required: Valid passports for the travelling parent and child. Valid visa, if one is required. Death certificate of deceased parent. One of the following: An unabridged birth certificate or equivalent document that shows the details of the adoptive or biological parents; a court order confirming the adoption; or an adoption certificate.
Scenario 3 An unaccompanied child who is in a foster home or temporary safe care home. Documents required: • Valid passport for the child.

• Valid visa, if one is required. • Letter from the Provincial Head of the Department of Social Development where the child lives, authorising them to leave the country. • Letter from the person who will receive the child in their destination country. • Proof of identity of the person who will receive the child in their destination country. • Contact details of the parents or legal guardian of the child.
Scenario 4 An orphan who does not yet have a legal guardian, or who has not yet been adopted. Documents required: • Valid passport for the child. • Valid visa, if one is required. • Letter of Special Circumstances issued by the Director General of Home Affairs. • Letter from the person who will receive the child in their destination country. • Proof of identity of the person who will receive the child in their destination country.
Scenario 5 A child who has parents or legal guardians, but is travelling with an adult who is not their parent or legal guardian. Documents required: • Valid passport for the child. • Valid visa, if one is required. • Unabridged birth certificate. • One of the following: A parental consent affidavit that is not older than four months; or a letter of Special Circumstances issued by the Director General of Home Affairs if the parents are incapacitated or deceased, and no legal guardian has yet been appointed.

One of the funny truths about travel is that it’s often the simplest things that bring one the greatest enjoyment. For all the things to do there, the same can be said of the sweet town of George on the Garden Route. One of the chief pleasures in the area is to simply hop in your car and drive.
But don’t just drive anywhere. Serving as the backdrop to the town, the Outeniqua Mountains (and slightly further ranges) do more than add a touch of grandeur to the area. Snaking over the mountains’ folds, hugging sheer drops and opening up staggering vistas, various passes have to be seen to be believed. Some are a little terrifying if you suffer from vertigo, but whether you take the easier routes or bravely tackle a gravel single track, you won’t regret a day trip from George into the mountains. Bring a camera, some binoculars and take your time, because the views wouldn’t be out of place on a postcard.
Montagu Pass (P1640) Opened in 1848 and declared a National Monument in 1974, Montagu Pass, which connects George and Oudtshoorn, is a well-conditioned gravel road some 7 km
in length with sweeping switchbacks which wind their way 382 m up Cradock’s Kloof to the tiny village of Heroldt on the northern side of the mountains. The speed limit is 40 km/h for good reason – the pass is a single track and there are some tight bends, making it particularly tricky if there’s a descending vehicle. Unofficial etiquette is that ascending vehicles have right of way. Another good reason for taking it slow is not just to appreciate the view, but to also consider what it took to make the pass a reality. Built using convict labour, 250 men carved out the pass in just three years, and a few spots along the way hearken back to those times. Most famous of all are the old toll house, which used to charge one penny per wheel and per ox, and the lovely Keur River Bridge, as well as other sites of interest including Amanda’s Grave, the view from which is stunning.

most notably the second from the top called “Four Passes” – the view is amazing, and as the name suggests, from this point one can see four other passes (including Montagu Pass).
Outeniqua Pass (N9/N12)
Swartberg Pass (R328)
It works out quite nicely to return to George via another spectacular pass. Outeniqua Pass is relatively modern, having been built in 1951 and widened and upgraded a number of times since then. Though it may lack the rustic charm of Montagu Pass, even the most cautious driver can complete it comfortably and it’s no less beautiful. The road descends in a number of sweeping S-bends, each with an amazing view, so take it slow and soak it all in. There are a few view sites where you can stop on the way down,
The Swartberg Pass, which connects Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert on the R328, is one of South Africa’s most fabled stretches of road, and a slightly trickier proposition compared to most passes. Opened in 1888, the pass is gravel the whole way and can be treacherous in the rain, and therefore, once again, the theme is to take it slow. You’ll be glad you did, because it affords one the opportunity of appreciating the pass’s construction, most notably the original drystone walls supporting the hairpin bends, as well

Other Passes There are so many passes in the area you may even find yourself on them by mistake. Just driving into the tiny surf town of Victoria Bay is an experience, and the stretch of the N2 between George and Groot Brakrivier, called the Hoogte Pass, is a joy in its own right, as is the Groot Brak Hoogte Pass on the R102. Essentially, if ever there was a place where it can be said that getting there is half the fun, this is it.

Prince Alfred’s Pass (R339) If you head north up Outeniqua Pass and get onto the N9 towards Uniondale, after about 80 km you’ll be able to head south to Knysna on the R339, traversing Prince Alfred’s Pass. Yet another gravel pass, at 68 km it’s the country’s longest mountain pass and the second oldest unaltered pass still in use. The road twists and turns as it follows the contours of the mountains, and just about every bend opens up another spectacular vista. It’s worth stopping just about anywhere it’s safe to do so, whether to enjoy the view or appreciate the techniques the roadbuilders used to make this road a reality, or to hop into a rock pool and cool down on one of the stretches
that follows the river. The steep gradient also means there are loads of waterfalls to see, so the real challenge is for the driver to keep an eye on the road and not gawk at the scenery. Along the way you can stop at the racily named Angie’s G-Spot (www.angiesgspot.co.za), a rustic bar and restaurant, for refreshments. It’s also worth contacting them in advance to find out if the pass is open.

The bartenders, John and Edio, were taking turns to teach us how to play tsoro. This game, which consists of moving seeds or beads around a wooden board (or a grid drawn in the sand) is popular throughout Africa, and is known by a multitude of names and played a multitude of different ways. We were playing the Mozambican way, moving clockwise around the board, trying to manoeuvre in clever ways in order to capture our opponent’s pieces. “Maybe you should move that one?” Edio suggests. It’s a move which results in a large and very satisfying haul of his seeds. “You’re letting me win!” I accuse him. He shakes his head and smiles. I smile back, because win or lose that particular game, just being at Azura Boutique Retreat on beautiful Benguerra Island, means that I had already won.

The road to the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz is paved in yellow bricks; those around Azura are paved in silver. Crushed sand oyster shells (a bi-product of the local fishing industry) cover the pathways, crunching satisfyingly underfoot, and glinting prettily in silver and mother of pearl in the sunlight. Like the yellow brick road, they also lead to a gem of a place, nestled as it is in isolated luxury on one of Mozambique’s picturesque desert islands, surrounded by a fairytale blue sea. Any king or queen should be allowed the opportunity to survey their kingdom, and arriving by helicopter allows all guests at this boutique retreat to do just that. As well as the excitement of the ride, you are also rewarded with a bird’s eye view of this stretch of sea, which is painted in sapphire and topaz hues with swathes of sand creating milky swirls in the water, and patches of sea grass leopardspotting the ocean floor with dark, circular shadows. As you leave the coastal town of Vilanculos behind, the island of Bazaruto (the largest in this archipelago) sits perched on the horizon, but it is its smaller sister island of Benguerra that will serve as your kingdom for your stay. At only 11 km long, the island offers an intimate escape, and Azura even more so, with its luxury villas nestled in lush gardens overlooking the beach.

Each villa comes with a shaggy thatch roof haircut, with tossled edges that shade the veranda. But don’t let the beachy, “bed head” vibe fool you, for step instead its blissful air-conditioned cool, and you will find a luxuriously appointed suite that is guaranteed to cater to every royal whim. Large beds (the kind you have to climb up onto, instead of sit down on) are romantically swathed in soft white netting, and look out onto a generously proportioned room, complete with a comfy reading chair and a nook with a desk – should you wish to quickly dash off a “Wish you were here” postcard. The bathroom runs the entire width of the room, with his and hers basins, a walk-in cupboard, an ample bathtub and a shower large enough even for a royal retinue. Every castle should have a drawbridge, and the villas here are no exception, with a wooden bridge that leads over a sea of aloes, to twin outdoor showers – perfect to cool off in the moonlight. Another option for cooling off is your own personal rim flow plunge pool, which even boasts a throne – yes, you heard me right – a submerged seat on which you can relax and watch the dhows sail by the beach, a stone’s throw from your veranda. These beach views can also be enjoyed from a pair of loungers nearby, or from a thatched sala that sits at the end of the garden, right on the beach.
The main lodge, as well as the villas are quite literally swimming with fish. Fish motifs paddle across the cushions on the beds; the villa door handles are silver fish; large beaded fish lamp shades swim in a school above the reception, and jellyfish ones hover above the restaurant. A large silver fish – ingeniously made from the worn cutlery from the backpacker’s lodge that once stood here – surveys the main deck. It’s little wonder though, as the sea, and the creatures in it, form such a part of life – and your stay – here. Romantic sunset dhow cruises (complete with French champagne, no less) give you insight into the traditional Mozambican way of sailing and fishing, while also giving you a wonderful view of the island. A short boat ride from the lodge, Two Mile Reef offers spectacular snorkelling with its multicoloured coral and teeming marine life, with tropical fish, moray eels, and even turtles making regular appearances. Drop below the waves, and you will discover one of Mozambique’s most picturesque dive sites – a vibrant underwater wonderland, where you could be rewarded with a multitude of magnificent sightings. Guide and dive master Paulo Vivane’s face lit up when he spoke of looking up from the sea bed to see schools of magnificent manta rays, sailing past on their giant wings, as well as swimming with magnificent whale sharks, or even spotting the notoriously elusive dugong, an animal so rare that seeing one is a true bucket list occasion. Other activities include island hopping to the very aptly named Paradise Island, and to little Pansy Island, so named because of the pansy shells that liberally dot it. You can also opt to swap your boat for a 4x4 and take a tour of the island itself, to climb sand dunes, look for crocodiles in the fresh water lakes, see the “wild side” of the island, and visit the local school, where the hotel is doing great work to assist with classrooms and educational supplies. As you go, your

guide will tell you about the indigenous plants and the ingenious uses that the locals have found for them, including medical remedies, mozzie repellent and even shampoo! A large number of the local residents have been employed at the lodge, where they welcome guests with genuine warmth and hospitality (like Paulo Vilanculos at the front desk), and provide the kind of unobtrusive service that makes you feel completely at home. For that added royal touch, each villa is assigned their own host, who is responsible for serving them all of their meals – many of which are set up in different locations each evening, to really make for memorable dining (which is only enhanced by the superb cuisine). Our host, Ronald Nembe, set up a magical dinner for us on the deck of our villa, complete with swaying lanterns in the trees and candles on the table. Oh, and not to forget the butter – every meal came with a new picture drawn onto its flat surface wishing us a happy day or a good meal. It turns out that Ronald is quite the artist! He – as were the other hosts – was also expert at anticipating our every need, not least of all at cocktail hour, which simply wouldn’t be complete without a new kind of cocktail every evening and a plate of nibbles to accompany it. Sitting on a deck chair, cocktail in hand, watching the startling turquoise of the sea changing to inky indigo as evening falls, you can’t help but feel supremely lucky. South African artist Mbongeni Buthelezi recycles plastic litter, adds some heat, and melts it onto his canvases to create beautiful pieces of art. A regular exhibitor on both the local and international art scenes for almost two decades, he has been hailed as one of the country’s most innovative artists. “I (use rubbish to) create something beautiful from it. I collect something that has no value and give it new life. That’s what we can do with ourselves and our lives,” is how artist Mbongeni Buthelezi introduces himself on his website (www.mbongeni-buthelezi.com), and for 16 years he’s made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s boldest and most original artists. He chose to work with plastic during his art school days in order to draw attention to the medium, and as a way to stand out in the often crowded local art scene. The tangible method of sculpting plastic onto canvas was also a way for him to work through his creative process. He told Euronews recently: “With watercolour and other mediums that I have experimented with in the past, there was a time where I felt that I was hitting the ceiling and was not growing anymore. I wanted to be noticed and
I wanted to attract attention, because I knew that I was moving into a career where you have to be really special to be able to even make a living out of it.” Buthelezi has been a regular and popular exhibitor on the South African art circuit for years, and has garnered positive attention from international galleries and art schools. Art lovers are intrigued by his use of discarded consumer plastic to craft vibrant and engrossing African story-portraits. In these works, he makes bold statements about the world as he sees it, addressing both social and environmental issues. An article in Live Out Loud on Buthelezi’s work described his work thus: “Reflecting humanity’s often detrimental impact on the environment, his original use of discarded objects to depict an often forgotten group of people truly sets him apart.”

His artistic process involves melting down strips of coloured plastic onto the canvas surface, itself often also made from plastic. He understates the creation process as simple and haphazard, but his final Pollockesque pieces speak for themselves, and are enjoyable and provocative on all levels, from all distances. “I’m interested in finding the details in the painting, but also, as you step away from the piece, it really comes together,” Buthelezi told BBC News at his latest exhibition in Johannesburg recently. Buthelezi may be the only artist – that he knows of – who works in this medium, but he appreciates this singularity, as it does not give him an outside point of reference that may hinder his originality. Yet he still believes that the melted plastic method is a way to make art creation easily available to anyone who wants to experiment, but who may not be able to access or afford traditional art materials. “(Anyone) can gather waste plastic and start painting,” he says, “and construct something out of nothing.” In addition to being recognised with a number of local art awards during his career, including being a semi-finalist in the 2007 Sasol Wax Art Awards, Buthelezi has also won a Visi Design Award as well as a Mail & Guardian Green Trust award for “commitment and contribution to the environment with social conscience and creativity”. He is artist-in-residence at the Omni International Arts Centre in New York City, as well as for the South African National Arts Festival. He has exhibited in Germany, the US and Holland, and has been commissioned to make exclusive works by companies such as Mercedes-Benz South Africa and the Daimler Art Collection in Stuttgart, Germany. When it comes to appreciating the role art has played in his life, Buthelezi is philosophical, telling the BBC he sees himself as “a mirror for the society I live in”. He adds: “I want to make a meaningful impact on that society.”

Road trips are synonymous with December holidays in South Africa. This translates to a time when the sun shines, and people head to the coast or other holiday destinations to spend time with loved ones and to de-stress before the start of the new year. If you are choosing not to travel by sea or by air, a car is the inevitable transportation option for the holiday season. However, car troubles and road trip blunders can easily hinder your perfectly planned break. This is exactly why you need to make provisions, especially if you are planning on embarking on an extended journey. Therefore, to really leave all your worries and woes at home, you need to take note of the following cardinal road-related tips:
Safety Comes First Before embarking on a road trip, it is important to undertake a thorough vehicle inspection to ensure that your vehicle is up to date when it comes to its services. You should check that the vehicle’s belts, hoses and tyres are intact, and that fluid levels are optimal for peace of mind during your trip.
Best to Back Up If you are relying on a GPS application on your cell phone for directions, consider taking along a car charger to ensure that your phone does not run out of battery power. And, as a back-up, it is always a good idea to be equipped with an old-school map in the case of an “if all else fails” situation arising.
The Pressure is On Tyres, tyres, tyres… These are so important, it cannot

be stressed enough. Firstly, your tyres need to be checked. And if they are ready to go, they need to be inflated to the correct pressure. This is usually indicated by a sticker on the inside of the driver’s door or in the manufacturer’s manual. If the tyres are filled with nitrogen instead of air, it is a good idea to have a top-up, as not all fuel stations have nitrogen pumps. Check the tyre-tread wear to determine whether a tyre needs replacing. To do this, have a look at the tread wear indicator bars moulded into the tread. If these bars have adjacent tread ribs, this an indication that the tyre needs replacing.
Planning Is Key Plan your route thoroughly, including refuelling points, as you do not want to be wondering whether you will make it to the next town. You need to consider other passengers’ needs as well. If you are travelling with children, it is a good idea to account for frequent breaks. It is also important to plan for emergencies. Make sure that you have a jack, spanner, emergency triangle, and a torch. Pack a first aid kit for minor medical emergencies and, if you have a roadside assistance plan, have the phone number and your policy number on hand.
Fuel Up Pack snacks and keep hydrated. This will cut down on stops and save money, plus refreshments are a good distraction for bored passengers.
Consider the Kids Bring entertainment options to occupy the children, including books, toys and games to play in the car. Dish these out as needed to save your sanity or to incentivise

Save the Sanity If your planning allows for this, travel on off-peak days. If you leave on the day that most businesses and schools close, you take the chance of getting stuck in gridlock traffic, and that marks a bad start to any getaway. Leaving a day earlier or later than the expected peak days can possibly save you hours of frustration, a few litres of fuel, and even your relationship with whoever is along for the ride – as well as your sanity.
Take It Easy Stagger your journey. If you are travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town or on any similarly long route, remember that there are no awards for arriving at your destination in one day. According to Arrive Alive, fatigued drivers and drivers taking on a long road trip without adequate breaks are hugely at risk on the road. The BMW 3 Series wears the distinction of being the founder of the modern sports sedan segment with ease and pride. Revered for its effortless performance, taut handling and sheer driving pleasure, there are few others that can match the determination of the 3-Series. Indwe discovered the virtues of the latest face-lifted model in Gauteng. It is no secret that the BMW 3-Series gets the blood flowing for thousands of eager South African executives every month. While some undoubtedly eye the car for its badge value, the enlightened 3-Series driver appreciates that she is piloting one of the most advanced sports sedans in the world, and drives it accordingly. Whether you are the switched on driver who connects with the car with every fibre of your being, or you are the brand aware driver who hopes to gain the envy of your trust fund colleagues when you pull up to Tasha’s in your new wheels, any enhanced 3-Series is a big deal. And so it should be. With over 14 million 3-Series sold over the last 40 years in 130 markets worldwide, this car is more than transport, it endows its owner with a certain lifestyle. The current generation 3-Series was introduced to South Africa in 2012. Built in the BMW Group’s number one vehicle assembly plant right here in Rosslyn, Gauteng, it is the crown jewel in the operation’s global business. Striking a careful balance between refreshing the 3-Series to retain (and enhance) its relevance in this market, without irking current 3-Series owners, BMW has made a number of subtle, yet key enhancements to the car. Up front, new headlights with slick new LED daytime running lights are most noticeable, underlined by a new front bumper design with more prominent air intakes that emphasise the car’s 1.81 m long width (2.03 m if you add in the side mirrors). A new sculpted rear apron offsets new LED light clusters
at the rear. The cabin was not overlooked for an upgrade either. New interior materials tangibly enhance the interior feel, with additional brightwork around the air vents and centre console, as well as several other switches. While ergonomic improvements have been made, I did encounter an oddity in terms of the odometer that hides itself behind the crest of the steering column. Regardless of how much I fiddled with the seat, I couldn’t find a setting where the meter showing distance travelled was not obscured. Ergonomic anomalies notwithstanding, the 3-Series interior is sublime and quiet. It is an island of calm that directly contradicts the controlled chaos of the symphonic new set of three-, four-, and hearty six-cylinder petrol engines of the 318i, 320i, 330i, and 340i respectively. All petrol mills, as well as the four-cylinder turbodiesel engine of the 320d, are now sourced from the modular BMW EfficientDynamics range of engines. This modular trend in engine design has the bonus of cutting both the time and cost of engine development, essentially allowing BMW to develop a single cylinder unit of 499 cc, and adding additional cylinder units for individual applications. This has led to the introduction of the first 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engine in the 3-Series line-up (it appears in the 318i as well as in the MINI Cooper), with a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder now doing duty in the 320i and 330i derivatives. Although largely an aesthetic upgrade, BMW has also

taken the opportunity to add a new model to the line-up. The 340i pulses with a brand new 3.0-litre, six-cylinder heart that beats vigorously, with 240 kW and 340 Nm of torque doing active duty. Driving this model on launch was a predictably pleasing experience. It is as if the 3-Series has taken all the lessons it has learnt over the last 40 years and applied them to the new car – especially in terms of emissions improvements and fuel consumption. These qualities are achieved with the help of BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology with TwinScroll turbocharging, high-precision injection, variable camshaft timing, and fully-variable valve timing. State-of-the-art BMW TwinPower Turbo technology is also used on the new BMW 3-Series four- and six-cylinder diesel models. The combination of turbocharging and latest-generation common rail direct injection, with maximum injection pressures of 2,000 bar, ensures impressive torque and refinement

combined with unsurpassed efficiency. The new 3-Series ranges in price from R409,000 for the entry level 318i with six-speed manual, and extends with several iterations through three specification levels – Sport Line, Luxury Line, and the range-topping M Sport package – topping out with the 340i M Sport with its eight-speed Steptronic ‘box for R680,600. For all of the 340i’s positively thrilling attributes, as well as the surprising smoothness and power of the new 318i, the upgraded 3-Series in general lacks the personality of some previous generation cars. It does everything perfectly, except induce goosebumps – a leg up that just about every generation of 3-Series has had over its ever-improving sports sedan rivals. Nonetheless, 3-Series fans will enjoy the new car, and it may even successfully poach some buyers from the other two German luxury automakers. Will you be one of them?

Pensioners often only discover too late that their savings might not be enough to adequately support them during retirement. We spoke to a number of specialists to identify the mistakes typically made in saving towards retirement – and how to avoid them. Mistake 1: Doing nothing or thinking you are too young “If you do nothing you will have nothing. Do something. However small, it is better than doing nothing,” stresses Lionel Karp, a retirement specialist with Chartered Wealth. Worryingly, many young people adopt an attitude of “I’m still young, I’ll worry about retirement later”. Then, suddenly, later is upon them and they have lost many crucial years of saving. “You are never too young to start saving,” says Certified Financial Planner Ricky Williams of Anfield Investment Planning. “The culture of saving for retirement should start with your very first pay cheque, because this
establishes a habit of saving. The sooner you start, the better your chances of a comfortable retirement.”
Mistake 2: Messing with your pension fund and retirement annuities Long service is mostly a thing of the past, with the younger generation frequently changing jobs. Not preserving pension fund contributions by transferring these to the new employer or to a preservation fund is, says Williams, “financial suicide”. Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser, head of Alexander Forbes Research Institute, says: “Treat your pension fund as

sacrosanct. Wealthy or not, don’t mess around with it. Treat it as though it is the only thing you will be able to live on. It is there to be your safety net and might be all you have if the rest of your wealth is wiped out.” A retirement annuity (RA) is the only retirement product that you are not allowed to touch before age 55, says Williams. “But if you stop contributing to your RA it becomes paid up. While it carries on growing, it does so at a reduced rate. Not only will you suffer an early termination penalty due to non-contribution, but you won’t have enough money at retirement.”
Mistake 3: Failing to get professional financial advice “People don’t want to pay for advice. Financial planning still has the connotation of selling life insurance and risk. There is a massive misunderstanding about the difference between dealing with a life insurance agent and a financial planner. The first deals with the risk side, such as death and disability and income protection. The latter is a specialist in retirement and financial planning,” says Karp. “Don’t try and do it yourself. There is a saying in law that a man who defends himself in court has a fool for a client. The same holds true here. The concept of taking and paying for advice is a critical part of the education process,” says Williams. A good financial planner will plan for a client’s funds to provide an income for life and even outlast them. This is generally achieved by making sure that a client’s portfolio is individually tailored, well-balanced and diversified, which ensures that a client’s money works hard for them and in their best interests. Diversification, both advisers maintain, is crucial. “You have to have a bit of cash, gilt, property and equity, and then you need to repeat the same thing offshore. As you get older, generally equity exposure is reduced to more property cum interest-bearing returns in order to mitigate risk,” says Karp.
Mistake 4: Electing to take too high a pension drawdown and eroding the capital “You should always aim to only draw down the percentage income that your funds are producing. That way you will never run out of capital,” cautions Williams. Taking a high drawdown percentage has the potential to erode capital and negatively impact the ability of that pension fund to provide an income for an increasing life expectancy. “Be aware of how much you are drawing in relation to how much it is reducing your capital,” says Karp. “In an ideal world one should obviously try and take as little as possible, but sadly, this is not always achievable.”
Mistake 5: Investing the bulk of your savings in high-risk ventures at a mature age Too often pensioners looking to bump up their retirement pots are seduced by get-rich-quick schemes. The old adage, “If it looks too good to be true, it generally is”, holds true. “A mature age is exactly the time you look to conservatism, the rationale being that if things go wrong you don’t have enough time to come back,” cautions Karp. “A young investor can bounce back from losses sustained by a high-risk investment, even if the market is down for 10 or 15 years, because they have the time to come back from that.”

How Much Do You Need to Retire Comfortably? Advancement in healthcare has meant life expectancy has lengthened, and this longevity requires financial planners to take a somewhat different stance when planning for an income for life. Today, life expectancy is around 90 years. Let’s assume retirement at 60 or 65 equates to 25 or 30 years without a salary. Those 30-odd years don’t come cheap given that, at the very least, this is when retirees can expect increased medical costs. “It’s a guide, but I try to plan to 100,” says Karp. “When you retire, you need 20 times your annual expenditure. So, for example, if your current expenses are R30,000 per month that equates to R360,000 annually, and multiplying this by 20 means a total of R7.2 million would be required.” Whether this amount would be enough depends on whether the capital increases by at least inflation, plus the fees paid to manage that money, says Williams. “Rather than individuals asking themselves how much capital they need, the question they should be asking themselves is this: How much income will I have at retirement, and will it be able to pay my expenses for my lifetime?”
Last-Minute Strategies to Boost Retirement Income • T ry and make a higher contribution towards your savings: If your disposable income does not allow for this, look at your budget again and determine where expenditure can be cut. • Consider working longer to continue earning a salary: Working beyond retirement often depends on company rules and the concern around cost to company of keeping such an individual on company benefits. But some companies do allow this, with the individuals themselves sometimes carrying the cost of those benefits. • Become inventive about bringing in more money: This could mean consulting or finding part-time work. “While you may no longer be employable in the formal sector due to your age, there is a whole new world opening up online where you can use your intellect to provide income,” says Cabot-Alletzhauser. • Reduce frivolous spending and consider downscaling your lifestyle: Cutting back on nice-to-haves could free up a healthy chunk of cash that could be used to top up the retirement pot.

With the launch of its most recent model, Ford has made no secret of the fact that the Everest is the one vehicle they have pinned their hopes on to grab significant chunks of market share from Toyota’s soon to be released new Fortuner. It remains a paradox why the Toyota Fortuner – basically a Hilux with a fully enclosed body that transforms it into an SUV – should be so successful, while Ford’s attempt at doing the same thing has not managed to achieve the same results. In fact, Naamsa’s September domestic sales figures show the Fortuner continuing to sell in droves (570 units), while a perusal of Ford’s figures (under passenger cars as well as light commercials) did not reveal a single sale for the outgoing Everest. The reasoning behind this phenomenon is hard to explain, but it’s probably a case of: “Let’s wait for the new one.” Neither vehicle will win awards for design, with the Fortuner appearing top heavy, and the previous generation Everest resembling a mechanical version of an elongated sausage dog. The new Everest, however, is set to change these negative perceptions.
Suddenly, it’s a beaut of a car as they say in Australia, with a large (think big American truck) grille, an aggressive stance enhanced by 230 mm of ground clearance, and a blend of interior luxury and off-road efficiency. While not a “Koakoveld killer”, the Everest certainly is rugged enough to challenge some really tough Category 3 to 4 obstacles. We tested the Everest’s off-road ability on some Category 3 gravel sections near Grabouw, where use was made of the “Crawl” mode in some sections and, alternatively, the “Mud” and “Sand” modes. These five modes (“Normal” and “Rock” also form part of the deal) are the Everest’s user-friendly secret weapons. It does not have the more advanced (for a true 4x4) 4L, but there’s an electronic locking rear differential that should keep you out of trouble. On-road, the Everest drove like a car. Acceptable

turning circles, good door seals which kept wind noise out, and brisk acceleration from the in-line five-cylinder turbo diesel proved beyond a doubt that Ford’s engineers have done their homework. There is some body roll, but this is well managed, and the high seating position will be enjoyed by most drivers, especially those a little on the short side. I was in two minds about the six-speed automatic gearbox, however. While the gear changes were smooth and efficient, the gearbox would, on occasion, sound like a struggling CVT, which is not a pleasant sound. It’s a given that the new Everest was designed to serve a dual purpose as a SUV and passenger car while, at the same time, emphasising the current preference for masculinelooking SUVs – even when they are being driven by soccer moms fetching the kiddies from school. Sensibly, the interior – with all the knobs and controls in intuitive places – is user-friendly and easy to grasp, without having to wade through an inch-thick manual. With rear-view cameras, parallel parking assist (on the LTD), hill descent control, hill launch assist, as well as blind spot monitoring, the Everest certainly comes across as more car than bakkie. The steering adjustment was a disappointment in that it can only be adjusted up-down, without the possibility of adjusting for reach – which could prove problematic for

those drivers with short arms and long legs! With the Fortuner currently retailing for between R399,500 and R576,00 (and who knows where prices will end up during the imminent Fortuner launch?), the Everest, unfortunately, seems to have reached a price ceiling where it is starting to move into Prado territory. Many cyclists are injured in vehicle crashes every year, and of these incidents around 40 % occur when a cyclist is hit from behind. Lindiwe Motha Senior Cabin Crew Member Length of Service: I have been with SA Express for almost six years. Tell us more about yourself. I am spunky and very driven and I love reading, sports and children. What is your favourite part of your job? Meeting new people – there’s never a dull moment and every day there’s a different story to tell with all the passengers we meet. What do you find most challenging about your job? Having to reprimand an older passenger for doing something wrong, when they “have been flying long before I was born”. I also don’t like dealing with emotional passengers, as it always breaks my heart – I forget about professionalism when I see tears. Why do you like working for SA Express? Simply because it is a good company. They care for their employees and have given me the chance to grow into the person I am today. They have blended my love for sport with my work, which is really awesome. I’ve had the opportunity to represent the company in the ACSA Sports Challenge and played for the King Shaka International women’s soccer team. What would people find surprising about your job? That there’s a lot of behind the scene work involved. We have

different training every year so that we are current with the ever-changing rules and regulations. And on a daily basis there is a lot of pre-planning and work that happens before the passengers board. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters in your job? We have funny incidents every day. A passenger offered me a job just to make him tea, all day every day. When I asked if he wanted me to be his maid, he said no. Apparently he has a maid, he just wanted me to make him and his guests this specific tea all year round. He gave me his email address in case I changed my mind… Well, we all know how that turned out! I also had an incident where a male passenger mistakenly hit my upper thigh with his elbow while trying to tighten his seat belt as I was walking down the aisle. I had pins and needles for a while, but then I was ok. I knew it was a genuine mistake, but he apologised throughout the flight and I think the incident really upset him. On his return flight he was still apologising saying: “I don’t hurt women, please forgive me, I am totally embarrassed”. I laughed about it and totally forgave him. I hope and pray he reads this so that he knows that all is forgiven. What are the words of wisdom that you live by? • Prior preparation prevents poor performance. • What you don’t celebrate will exit your life. • Smile, it lightens up the room.

Safety Information Health regulations Health regulations at certain airports require that the aircraft cabin be sprayed. The spray is harmless, but if you think it might affect you, please cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief. Remain seated As a safety precaution, passengers are requested to remain seated with seatbelts fastened after the aircraft has landed, until the seatbelt sign has been switched off by the captain. Portable electronic equipment The use of personal electronic devices (PED’s) will apply to all domestic and regional flights on the CRJ700/200 and DH8 Q400.
Passengers will be permitted to use PED’s such as cell phones, e-readers and electronic tablets in flight-mode.
Cellular telephones Cellular telephones may be used on the ground while passenger doors are open. Cellular telephones, smartphones or any device with flight mode must be switched off as soon as the cabin doors are closed and when the senior cabincrew member makes an announcement on the public-address system. Laptop computers Laptops with CD ROM and DVD drive, handheld calculators, electric shavers and portable personal listening devices may not be used on the ground during taxi but may be used during the flight when the seatbelt signs are switched off and with permission from the captain. Should circumstances dictate otherwise, a public-address announcement cancelling this concession will be made by a crew member.

Passenger Letters Dear SA Express Team, I have been a part of a mentoring and coaching project to capacitate women’s shelters in the Eastern Cape for the past year. At first I was very sceptical about flying in your small SA Express aeroplanes. However, on a particular trip between Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London recently, the journey was seamless and your staff were professional and extremely helpful. On my departure from East London back to Cape Town, a young boy was flying on his own. I was amazed at the care that was given to him by Chanelle and Justin, our flight attendants. They made sure that he understood the emergency procedures and checked on him regularly. From what I observed, I’m sure that the young boy would leave the plane as a “customer for life”. I commend Chanelle and Justin for allaying the boy’s fears as travelling alone, let alone flying, can be quite a traumatic experience.
