Freedom without fences Thornybush Luxury Game Lodge Collection. A name steeped in fame, and arguably one of the country’s finest bush experiences. But, unlike most, Thornybush goes even further, and places conservation and research at the heart of their ethos. Nature conservation is one of their top priorities, and efforts are constantly being made to keep the wilderness as untouched as possible. Thornybush Luxury Game Lodge Collection was, in 2017, in the midst of a landscape transformation process. The exciting development saw the reserve drop the fences between itself and the Timbavati Reserve, making the private area of land open to the Greater Kruger National Park. More room for animals to roam is always a good thing, and Thornybush’s game viewing has benefited too. You might think that dropping the fences could have risked the loss of some of its wildlife, but Thornybush Collection were adamant that it would allow for greater freedom of movement for most animal species residing in the park. The first instinct of game reserves, historically, has been to keep their precious resources contained, where dangers in the form of human animal
conflict, poaching, and modern development can be managed. Yet animals do not follow the same migration patterns – they go where the food is, where the water flows and where there are wide open spaces to hunt or graze. Now that the fences have dropped, tourists can enjoy the full-blown diversity of a large reserve such as Kruger, combined with the luxury of the intimate safari experiences offered by Thornybush Luxury Game Lodge Collection. Thornybush has become a visitor’s paradise and offers guests the privilege of experiencing utterly unspoilt nature. Thornybush Luxury Game Lodge Collection consists of 13 commercial lodges and is even home to South Africa’s second-oldest commercial lodge. The Thornybush Game Lodge, like most lodges in Thornybush, was designed to blend into the surroundings. Pathways, lined by an abundance of diverse trees and manicured gardens, take guests to their luxurious rooms, all of which have panoramic views with the ever-present chance of the occasional animal wondering by. Game rangers are required to walk guests to their rooms at night, just in case a wild animal or two happen to wander through the camp.
A collection as diverse as Thornybush has the benefit of offering something for every type of traveller. Lovers of the bush can look forward to not only spotting the Big Five, but also the stunning diversity of the reserves flora and fauna. All of the rangers on the reserve are trained and knowledgeable on each and every animal species found on the reserve. One of the many benefits of visiting Thornybush is that the land is private, and so what the locals know as bundu bashing (offroading through the land) is totally allowed – meaning that rangers can get guests even closer to the animals. Personally, I tend to sway towards the less adventurous side of a lodge experience, and I revel in the cuisine and spa elements available at five-star establishments. But even I had to admit, after an exciting gamedrive, my favourite thing to do was climb into my bath tub and settle in for a night of pampering, with the sounds of the bush echoing around me. For more info, visit www.thornybush.co.za and see what magic awaits you in the heart of the South African wilderness.

’TIS THE SEASON TO
C EL E BRATE As we come to the end of 2018, a year that has tested our resilience as an airline, country and nation, there are many life lessons to be taken forward into 2019 and a number of events to celebrate. Top amongst our significant accomplishments is resuming operations to seven of our carefully selected local and regional routes. We now fly you with regular frequency from Johannesburg to Lubumbashi, Walvis Bay, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Hoedspruit, with more routes to be added. To further streamline your holiday travelling experience, we have also re-launched the Durban to Port Elizabeth route to provide improved access to some of your favourite holiday and business destinations. These new routes come into effect from 3rd December 2018. I am delighted also to announce that effective from 10th December 2018, we will be launching a daily service into Mthatha to assist with the VFR (Visiting Friends & Family) market from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape over the December period. This is in line with our mission to connect main airports to secondary airports with frequency and a value-for-money product. The Festive Season is a time for family and friends to unwind after a long and demanding year. With our impressive On-Time Performance (OTP) consistently averaging over 90%, SA Express assures our passengers a convenient

travelling experience within the scheduled time, almost all the time. This means more quality time at home for you and your loved ones. To us, these accomplishments are more than just operational milestones. They are also a strong display of the continued faith and support from our loyal customers and a validation of our continued efforts to self-improve and make flying a unique and pleasant experience for our passengers. Thanks for your continued patronage. On that positive note, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful season of happiness and blessings in abundance, with even more exciting things to come in 2019. Let us also give thought to those less fortunate than us during this period and share kindness in whatever way we can. Speak to us on talktous@flyexpress.aero to share your experience with our airline and help us to enhance your future flying experience. 2019 will mark the airline’s 25th anniversary and a new era for an airline whose relevance is as essential today, as it was when it started more than two decades ago. We enter the new phase more invigorated than before and buoyed by the unmatched support from our loyal customers and stakeholders to grow the airline to even greater success in the decades to come. Reliability & Safety Tsietsi Mogotsi has the very distinguished-sounding title of Position Person Responsible for Aircraft (PRA). But just what does that mean and what role does Mogotsi play at SA Express? Indwe sat down with him recently to find out. Text & Images © SA Express / Indwe: What does your position entail, and what qualifications does one need to do your job? Tsietsi Mogotsi (TM): My role as SA Express Person Responsible for Aircraft (PRA) means that I am the person accountable and responsible for the safe operation of our aircraft. Additionally, I am accountable for compliance with aviation legislation and the terms and conditions as specified in the airline’s Air Operators Certificate (AOC), Aircraft Maintenance Operations (AMO), ATO, ATTC and Op Specs. These certificates are basically our license to trade as an airline, and our safety compliance is rigorously monitored by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). Furthermore, I am responsible for ensuring quality management, as well as the identification and mitigation of safety risks. I also have the responsibility of operationalising the strategic objectives of SA Express and the management of Continuing Airworthiness of SA Express’ aircraft and equipment to ensure continuous improvement of Aircraft Performance (in terms of reliability and safety). I started my career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and I am fully certified on all SA Express fleet. I went further to acquire my Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics and Management, which I obtained from Wits University. This is a proud achievement for me, given the limited opportunities and exposure to aviation careers afforded to young rural black people in this country. SACAA applies very strict criteria for one to qualify for a role in PRA. These include proven experience in maintenance in a
continuing airworthiness environment. Furthermore, one must have work experience with SACAA for a minimum of two years. Indwe: It is public knowledge that SA Express was grounded from May until August 2018 – what assurance can be given to the passengers regarding aircraft reliability? TM: The grounding provided an opportunity for us all to go back to the drawing board, so to speak. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to improve and reengineer the airline’s reliability program, which is an important factor not only to the passengers but also to the viability of the company, as it markets itself as a leader in the industry. So far the reliability programme has been optimised and certain key factors
that affected the company’s performance have been evaluated. They are being monitored closely and given the requisite attention in order to ensure their continuous improvement. The necessary key factors are presently in place. The airline reliability programme is a live programme that is always a work in progress and is improved upon because as aircraft age, new type failures emerge and more attention is given to them. This is not a practice specific to just SA Express fleet, but is an industry-wide practice. I am proud to say that currently we are averaging 99 % Technical Dispatch Reliability and 90 % OTP. Indwe: What are the steps that have been taken to prevent any reoccurrence of the grounding? TM: Safety has always been our number one priority. It is ingrained in the business
INDWE
/15
strategy and one of the organisation’s fundamental core values. In my personal capacity, I can assure our passengers that our license was not revoked because of an unsafe operation, as evidenced by the fact that SACAA did not ground any of our fleet during the audit. As part of our return-to-service organisation strategy, we have improved relationships with our key stakeholders, in particular SACAA and Bombardier. Indwe: What are the safety measures that an aircraft has to subscribe to before it can take off? TM: Firstly, aviation is highly regulated and our aircraft undergo stringent checks and balances. This industry, much like many other sectors, has introduced redundancy as an effective way of reducing risk and/ or increasing reliability. Redundancy is the implementation of additional systems to carry out a given function, even though the aircraft or equipment could safely operate with the use of only one system. The second system is implemented to reduce the risk of probable failure of the main system, thereby increasing the reliability of the equipment. Inherent safety is defined as the level of safety that is built into the aircraft or equipment. That level is upheld through regular maintenance checks
16/
INDWE
and it is from time to time improved by redesigning the necessary equipment. All of our aircraft comply with a Maintenance Program as set out by Bombardier Maintenance Review Board and SACAA regulations and standards. There are different levels of maintenance checks that must be complied with that are dependent on the hours the aircraft has operated. Over and above what is set in the program, SA Express has developed what we call, “maintenance best practices” to address failures related to our environment and type of operation. These are not just regular, mandatory checks but extraordinary maintenance that the organisation has undertaken to perform in order to ensure a safe operation that is beyond reproach at all times. Indwe: How would you rate the South African aviation industry in relation to observing regulatory technical standards? TM: The industry has improved tremendously and it is continuing to do so. This is informed by the improvement of regulations which have been revised to benchmark with international standards. The regulator works very closely with airlines in making sure compliance is viewed seriously and without compromise.
The number of safety audits that the regulator conducts within the industry is evidence of how the SACAA standards have improved to ensure airlines continue to operate with safety as a fundamental business practice. Indwe What is your parting message to our passengers? TM: To our beloved and loyal passengers who have faith in us and given us support, we thank you so much. As an airline we have done a lot of introspection that has inspired us to return to the basics that made SA Express great in the first place. Among other things, we have revisited our past values and we are in the process of instilling a new corporate culture predicated on efficiency, integrity and accountability. SA Express is not in the business of merely flying passengers from one point to the other, but rather to provide a oneof-a-kind, specialised customer offering. Anyone can fly, but it is all about how we differentiate ourselves in how we meet customer needs and fly you and your loved ones to your destinations – more especially during the approaching Festive Season – with excellent on-time performance as our focus, so that we can be your reliable travel partner. /

Bohemian Rhapsody Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of iconic British band Queen, their music, and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek). Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio 2018 Van Loveren’s Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio 2018 has an alcohol content of only 12 %, and is a beautiful, elegant and romantic pale rose petal colour with a bright hue. “It displays a fine nose with enticingly fresh notes of raspberries, strawberries, red currant, ripe citrus and melon with a gentle lemon undertone,” winemaker Chris Crafford explains. “It is medium in weight, crisp, with good grip and fine extract, and boasts elegant fruit and lingering persistence on the palate.” This dry, slightly sparkling wine will pair well with pork chops and grilled peaches, summer salads, sushi, grilled vegetables and fresh berries. The unique Perlé style gives the wine a slight fizz, which adds an extra refreshing appeal. The Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio 2018 will be available from Makro outlets nationwide at R69 per bottle, as well as directly from Van Loveren via thewinehub.membernet.co.za.

Turn it Up! / What is the secret to a sizzling summer anthem? Fresh, versatile talent, a playful pop tune and, for good measure, a pinch of local flavour – and that’s exactly what the talented South African-born Qwade Dunn is bringing with his new single, “Girlfriend”. With its playful interpretation of lust, the track – written by Dunn, Jazz Purple and ManCub (who recently collaborated with Ray J and Rich The Kid) – is a feel-good pop song that fuses Dunn’s signature South African sound with international flair. But what sets Dunn apart lies less in the music and more in the person behind it. “My material is brutally honest; it is a quality I’ve tried to keep throughout my
26/
INDWE
body of work and in life, in general. I wear my heart on my sleeve, good or bad,” the artist explains. Photography for the single was done by Edward Cook, who has worked with artists such as One Direction’s Liam Payne, as well as Jorja Smith, Khalid and Craig David, among others. Qwade grew up in the small KwaZuluNatal town of Eshowe. As a teen, the South African-born singer relocated to New Zealand to study. With a passion and desire to make it in the music industry, he self-funded his first music demo and video, which caught the attention of British manager Johnathan (Jay) Jules.
After being scouted by Sony Music, Dunn released his debut single, “We Are”, produced by British producer James Reynolds, in 2012. It featured as song of the week on New Zealand’s ZM Radio, making Dunn the first African artist to achieve that status in Australasia. In 2013, Dunn returned to South Africa, where he continued to pursue music, albeit in a different way. “It was at this point that Jonathan Jules and I founded Jabba, a music company with a difference. It provided a solution for international music companies seeking to establish a footprint in Africa, one of the world’s fastest growing economies. We not only wanted to bring products into Africa for African music lovers, but also wanted to create a vehicle for exporting African music beyond borders.” While the business became his primary focus, Dunn continued to release music ad hoc from late 2015 to 2017. “During this time, I did a radio/television tour of east Africa – it just so happened that our company was label partners to an Idolstype show in Zambia. I loved touring east Africa because the people were so warm and the vibe I got was incredible. It made me fall in love with our continent all over again.” In terms of his musical career this ambitious artist believes that he has hardly scratched the surface of what can be achieved. “You’ve got to set unobtainable goals and keep working,” he says. Wise words from a kid who started out as a DJ at school events and now not only runs his own successful company, but who also writes and produces his own music. With plans that include conquering Africa one country at a time – both as an artist and an entrepreneur – it is clear that Qwade Dunn means business. / QwadeDunn @QwadeDunn @qwadedunn

DREAMING A PATHWAY TO THE STARS Trailblazing Rocket Scientist Lumka Msibi

INDWE
Since the dawn of the 20th Century, increasingly more women have been taking on entrepreneurial roles, as well as breaking ground in fields that were previously the exclusive domain of men. One such field is science, and one such woman – who is literally reaching for the stars – is Lumka Msibi.
Text: Julie Graham Images © NASA & iStockphoto.com
/ NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) was established in 1958 as a part of the United States government and is in charge of all airplane- and space-related US science and technology. When NASA began, the staff was almost completely male. Today, however, the number of women working for the organisation has grown exponentially, with many making significant contributions to space programmes around the world. From a township girl growing up in Soweto, to an international award-winning leading rocket scientist working for NASA, Lumka Msibi is nothing short of an inspiration. ROCKING THE ROCKETS Lumka Msibi is a qualified aeronautical engineer, global speaker, and entrepreneur who is working as an aerospace systems
engineer (also known as a “trailblazing rocket scientist”) for NASA in the heart of Silicon Valley in San Francisco, California. Msibi is currently working on a satellite that is to be launched on the first ever flight of the Space Launch System of NASA, America’s new powerful and advanced launch vehicle. She is also working on an astronaut-assisting robot for use aboard the International Space Station (ISS) – the world-class laboratory currently orbiting 400 km above the Earth. In April 2016, Msibi received the Innovation Award for her technical design contributions to the National South African satellite. This prestigious award graces her already trophy-laden cabinet, and acknowledges her innovative approach to solving critical problems, as well as her experience in design, systems, management, and business development.

Find your passion, have a vision, and dream big. Do not tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon. I went from township girl in Soweto to internationally award-winning trailblazing rocket scientist working for NASA.
- Lumka Msibi
THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT Even as a young child growing up in Soweto, Msibi looked to the skies for inspiration. “I grew up chasing planes on the dusty streets of Soweto and decided that one day I would fly them. I eventually flew in a plane and then flew a plane myself, albeit a glider [unpowered aircraft]. Then I set a new goal: I wanted to design and build aircraft and flying devices,” she explains. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering, her dream soared to new heights. “I wanted to design flying machines that were out of this world, which brought me to space and designing space craft, satellites, and robotics for astronauts in space.” Msibi’s determination and persistence in setting a goal, achieving it, and then moving forward and setting new goals, is key to her success. “I work with the best brains in the world at NASA to design space technology that has a huge impact on bettering our lives as humanity. And – you guessed it – my next goal is to be the first African astronaut working on ground-breaking research in space, and you’d best believe I am on my way to achieving that goal in time,” Msibi says.

A massive inspiration to women around the world, Msibi continues to dream bigger and bigger – and bigger. Her advice to women who want to make an impact involves vision, innovation and, of course, leadership: “Find your passion, have a vision, and dream big. Do not tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon. I went from township girl in
Soweto to internationally award-winning trailblazing rocket scientist working for NASA.” If that is not inspiration enough to look beyond one’s situation, work hard, and dream big, I don’t not know what is. INSPIRING THE ENTREPRENEURS
OF THE FUTURE
Botswana Accountancy College Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) is a business school that was set up over two decades ago to contribute towards human capital development in Botswana and beyond. Although the name suggests that the college offers accounting programmes, BAC has – over the past 20 years – diversified its programme portfolio to offer business, leisure, management and ICT related programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. They also offer consultancy, finance and accounting professional programmes as well as customisable business short courses. With over 11,000 alumni in the market, they continue to aspire to be the leading Business School of Choice in Africa and beyond through delivery of quality tertiary education and by grooming leaders who will add value to economic diversification and growth of Botswana and the world.

/ By aligning their programmes with industry and market needs for sustainable development, BAC has adopted a collaborative model to provide internationally recognised qualifications. Their strategic academic partners include the University of Derby, University of Sunderland and Sheffield Hallam University – all in the UK – through which undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are offered. These are delivered through the School of Computing and Information Systems, the School of Business and Leisure, and the School of Post Graduate Studies which also offer programmes developed in partnership with the industry. Through the School of Finance and Professional Studies, the College delivers programmes in partnership with the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) – of which they are the only Platinum Partner in Botswana and one of only five in Africa – and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), of which BAC is the only Premium Learning Partner in Botswana and one of seven in Africa. ACCOLADES BAC won the 2016 Association of Accounting Technician (AAT) Training Provider of the Year Award. One of their lecturers became the first lecturer outside
the United Kingdom and the first lecturer and woman in Africa to win the AAT International Tutor Award at the 2018 Training Providers Conference in May. The college’s professional programmes continue to produce market-ready graduates across different disciplines. BAC was also honoured with the PMR Africa Diamond Arrow Awards in 2016 and 2017. The College offers the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) qualification underpinned by the Institute of Chartered Accounts of England and Wales (ICAEW) from which the 14 graduates to date were all BAC-trained – a fact which won the college the Best BICA Tuition Provider Award for 2017.
Through their collaborative initiative with the Sheffield Hallam University, two of their students have won Inspirational Student Award of the Year awards, and three lecturers have won the Inspirational Lecturer of the Year awards since 2017 – voted for by the peers and students respectively. Some students are assigned on long-term projects to small and medium enterprises in the industry on a Student Consultancy Programme to assess, diagnose and recommend solutions for those businesses. This has been a successful initiative and more than 100 students have graduated from it. TOWNSHIP ENTREPRENEURS Kasi Unlimited When proposing the economic stimulus and recovery plan for South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised that there would be a reprioritisation of spending towards activities that have a particular emphasis on township and rural economies, women and youth. Text: Supplied Images © Kasi Unlimited
/ With South Africa’s townships accounting for over R300 billion in spending per year, there is an enormous potential to boost the South African economy and the creation of jobs – if the country could ensure it was tapping into the informal and township markets. After all, if just R30 billion of that R300 billion was to be better linked to the struggling
formal sector, it would make a huge difference to the economy and to the lives of many people. In a 2014 study of informal businesses in Diepsloot, Gauteng, the World Bank concluded that, “If informal modernising enterprises can access formal sector finance and value-chains they can be an important driver of near-term economic
growth and job creation in South Africas” Fortunately, there are existing initiatives to meet this challenge. Initiatives like Kasi Unlimited – a recently launched businessto-business platform that is already changing lives. The focus on “kasi” (meaning “location”) is an attempt to connect small or informal businesses to each other via

a digital platform, and serve as a basis for businesses to be connected to larger buyers, suppliers or partners that have an interest in offering support. Kasi Unlimited empowers townshipbased firms owned by people of all ages – as well as new micro-franchises – to create opportunities for township-based youth by enabling the entrepreneurial journey from informality and/or starting up, to maintaining a sustainable business. The Kasi Unlimited platform is an online set of tools and supports, linked to various programmes and partners, which enables a seamless connection between township businesses, service providers and corporates. It provides access to market, skills, expertise and administrative support, as well as finance. York Zucchi, co-founder of The SME Movement, a wide network of entrepreneurs, mentors and corporates,
44/
INDWE
is a strong believer in matching platforms. Even though Kasi Unlimited has only recently been launched, Zucchi can already see the impact. “The Kasi entrepreneurs using the Kasi Unlimited platform are as diverse as their business needs,” he explains. “There is, for example, an entrepreneur from Soweto who’s manufacturing his own washing powder, and supplying clients in his community. He’s producing small batches to cater for the household income available. As the client feedback regarding his product was very positive, he’s now looking to distribute his product to other communities, as well as guesthouses that are interested in buying from small businesses. Through the Kasi Unlimited platform he has been able to share his product offering with a wider community of SMEs that are interested in doing business with each other, enabling him to participate
in the digital economy at no cost. And we’ve heard that there are some promising discussions with guesthouses on the way.” While it is an emerging partnership between business and government, Kasi Unlimited is being run as a pilot with Gauteng Provincial Government’s Tshepo 1Million programme, which is seeking to benefit one million youths through skills development and access. Large corporate entities such as Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Hollard, and Broll have partnered with the provincial government, either as sponsors or as procurement or selling partners. The Industrial Development Corporation, a major development funder, has also joined the partnership. The range of partners and supporters has been wide indeed – even the UK’s Prince Harry has been an enthusiastic supporter of the many township-based and innovative SME programmes.

Ravi Naidoo – founder of Bluefields, which identified the need for the matching platforms – has been an ardent advocate for partnership to benefit the township economy. “The problem has been that a vast proportion of raw South African entrepreneurial talent [and youth jobs] has been trapped in townships,” Naidoo says. “What we have found is that township enterprise programmes fail because enterprises are typically unverified, have no transaction history [so banks won’t work with them], they cannot get integrated as distributors or suppliers, and the usual incubator support is too expensive. “But through an online digital platform we can get enough information to know the enterprise and match them to the right partners – that information allows us to make a market.” Naidoo had previously been the executive at the Development Bank of Southern Africa that led to the creation of the South African Green Fund. Thereafter, as executive in the City of Johannesburg, together with Wits University he drove the creation of the Tshimologong ICT Precinct in Braamfontein. So naturally he sees innovation, partnerships and funding as critical. According to Naidoo, the next step is the creation of an SME fund to support the emerging new township franchises
46/

and growth businesses. He has already started raising funds, and has received commitments from large corporates and the public sector. “The intention is to establish a significant fund that can support the growth of iconic local franchises,” he says. There is no doubt that the focus on township enterprises is timely. To meet the national target of creating 11 million new jobs by 2030, the country needs another
49,000 SMEs growing at a rate of 20 % per annum. Most of these will probably have to be found amongst the vibrant entrepreneurs in South Africa’s townships. 50 SHADES OF GREEN There is no question that the eyewear we choose to wear from day to day can have a major impact on the image we project. Trends are constantly evolving, and part of the excitement about fashion is keeping up to date with the ebb and flow of different styles and the latest designs. While it may not be viable for us to constantly change our wardrobe to keep up with the influx of new creations, it is possible to invest in a set of eyewear that stands the test of time and can refresh an entire look, making a statement wherever you go. Text: Julie Graham Images © David Green
/ “Think about it. You wear a different pair of shoes, or different clothes, on different days. But chances are, once you have chosen your eyewear, you wear the same pair day in and day out. It is a huge part of your life,” says David Green, CEO and founder of David Green Eyewear. Not only can eyewear be the finishing touch to an outfit, it is fast becoming a go-to accessory for those wanting to transform their personal image and to make a statement – and what a powerful statement David Green eyewear makes. GREEN FINGERS David Green, aptly dressed in an emerald green V-neck when we meet, is as unique as his namesake brand. A passionate businessman, Green left the corporate world over 13 years ago and began his endeavour to bring his love of nature into cities around the world through his bespoke eyewear. Born in Cape Town to a surrealistartist father, Green combined his artistic flair, electrical engineering background, and love of nature to create a brand that embodies quality, comfort and timeless style using natural, raw materials. “To me, art is the only thing that keeps the world sane,” he explains, “and eyewear is actually a very nice combination of art and engineering. I think it was a fortuitous coincidence to have the art streak from my father mixed with the engineering preciseness of my background.” The unbounded passion Green has for the environment stems from a consciousness and awareness of the
50/
INDWE
fragile balance in nature and the need to conserve it. As a result, David Green eyewear embraces the idea of “slow fashion”. This growing trend places much greater emphasis on quality, and focuses on creating personalised products that can last forever, using materials that are ethically sourced with little to no impact on the environment. Each pair of Green’s designs contains a unique natural fingerprint created by the
incorporation of fallen leaves, reeds, motherof-pearl, or other raw materials sourced from the Western Cape. No two designs are the same. “I really believe that there is no substitute for the power of nature, and that when people see the fingerprint of nature on a product, they feel that power,” he says. “Everything we deal with is 100 % authentic. If it says it is a reed, it is a reed. If it says mother-of-pearl, it is real mother-of-pearl. This is very important to us.”
GREEN-TINTED GLASSES So why eyewear? Apart from having worn glasses himself since he was five years old, Green believes – and with good reason – that the global market for eyewear is booming. “The power of a frame is really amazing. Do you know why people buy eyewear?” he asks me, with a glint in his eye. “I believe it has something to do with improving eyesight,” I offer.
INDWE
/51
He laughs. “Of course. But there is more to it than just optical correction. People buy eyewear because they want an update of themselves. Eyewear can give you a whole new lease on life. It can create a ‘new me’. It can make you look like the assertive Monday-morning go-getter; it can make you look like an eccentric artist; it can give you that relaxed Sundaymorning look. Who do you want to be?” David Green has created something far beyond a product. He has created a philosophy. A “green” philosophy that is spreading far and wide across the globe. “It is an amazing colour!” he exclaims. “It has all sorts of positive associations. It is the colour of growth, the colour of prosperity, and it has incredible depth to it. But when people say ‘green’ they are not just talking about a colour. They are talking about a philosophy, and that is very important to us.” With over 3,700 local and international distributors, his vision of creating a product that can bring the natural world into our everyday lives has inspired a renewed appreciation for the greatest designer of them all: Mother Nature. Mabula’s Magic Reimagined
There is no shortage of game lodges in South Africa. Every year visitors from all over the world visit our country to explore the magic that South Africa holds – picturesque scenery, renowned natural attractions, and of course our beloved Big Five. Foreigners and locals alike are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to unpack their suitcases in order to see these creatures. Mabula Game Lodge, having undergone a massive revamp, has increased the competition.

/ Two hours’ drive north of Johannesburg you’ll find a 12,000-ha reserve which is home to an abundance of wildlife – including the Big Five – as well as jaw-dropping scenery. Mabula Game Lodge is nestled in the Malaria-free Waterberg region of Limpopo. As one of South Africa’s longest established lodges, Mabula is well-known for delivering on all their promises. The slow but steady transformation of its recent remodel – in order to position it has one of SA’s top game lodges – has certainly paid off. “Everything – from the lodge’s entrance to the reception, lounge, rooms, boma, pool area, outdoor terrace area, curio shop, spa, conservation and reserve projects – has been given a magical restyling, and the result is nothing short of miraculous,” says

THE BEST THE BUSH HAS TO OFFER With regards to the activities offered at Mabula, all have one common goal: “To awaken the senses and quicken the pulse by presenting the African bush in ways you would never have imagined.” The lodge offers classic safaris in which guests are guaranteed to witness an astounding selection of African wildlife. Aside from the Big Five, the reserve is home to 63 mammal species, 328 species of birds, and numerous reptile and insect species, as well as diverse plant life.
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS Mabula also offers horseback and quad-bike safaris for a completely different game-viewing experience. For those sweltering summer days, Mabula is equipped with a crystal-clear swimming pool, surrounded by loungers and a poolside cocktail bar. UNWAVERING RESPECT What is extremely evident when visiting Mabula is the complete respect staff have for the creatures which inhabit the reserve. Game rangers and hotel staff alike live by the belief that the reserve is home to the animals, with the rest of us merely being visitors. The unwavering regard the Mabula staff have for the land and all it houses is touching and admirable. When embarking on safaris, respect for the animals and

The Psychology of
Christmas Shopping How Marketers Nudge You to Buy Many people see marketing as a form of manipulation, particularly around Christmas and the other retail bonanzas: Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. But rather than simply trying to trick people, the masters of marketing know it’s much easier to understand and work with innate human flaws and habits. Text: Paul Harrison: Director, Centre for Employee and Consumer Wellbeing; Senior Lecturer, Deakin Business School, Deakin University / www.theconversation.com Images © iStockphoto.com
/ By drawing on a plethora of psychological and sociological research, marketers subtly give us permission to buy and not to think too much, or too deeply, about why we’re buying. Not thinking all the time is a very efficient way for us to get by. It conserves energy, and allows us to live relatively easily by responding to our psychological predispositions, social norms, and general cognitive imperfections. Here are some of our flaws marketers use to nudge us towards consumption.
THE SCARCITY EFFECT Scarcity theory tells us that if we think something is scarce or only available for a short time, our mind will give it more weight. Christmas is a hard deadline, so we are limited in our freedom to delay the purchase decision. Scarcity influences our ability to think clearly when making decisions, and accelerates our perceived perishability of an offer. We feel that if we don’t participate in the Christmas ritual, we will miss out on a significant social experience.
Melbourne in Australia,, for example, has its annual “Shop the City” promotion in the first week of December, where major retailers offer discounts available only on the day. Similarly, many shops offer Christmas-only bundles or gift sets, often at a “discount” – which “doubles” the scarcity effect. All of these tap into our willingness to respond to the scarcity effect and feel the need to buy things we would normally ignore. Remember, Christmas won’t be your only opportunity to show others how
INDWE
/59

much you love them, or to spend time with your family. It seems obvious, but you can buy people gifts at any time of the year! All marketers are doing is tapping into your predisposition to value experiential scarcity during socially validated moments. OVERWHELMING STIMULI By surrounding us with stimuli designed to overwhelm our cognitive processing, marketers know we are less likely to think through our decisions in any complete way. When we walk into a shopping mall filled with Christmas tinsel, Christmas music, lights and sounds, we are going to experience some form of ego depletion. Ego depletion doesn’t mean you instantly become a humble, thoughtful person. In psychology, we use this term to describe how people don’t always think through their decision-making in a rational and linear way when placed under situations of stress. So, all that noise, colour and movement isn’t just the shopping centre getting into
60/
INDWE
the Festive Season. It’s also a technique to get you to think a little less completely, and respond to emotional cues, such as social norms, FOMO (fear of missing out), and rituals. OUR INABILITY TO FORECAST Psychological research tells us humans aren’t very good at predicting the future. Or perhaps we just have an over-inflated sense of our accuracy in predicting the future – we rely on how we feel right now to predict how we might feel about something later. Psychologists call this affective forecasting. So, in the moment, and just in that moment, we buy things we think we will need. But we discount all the other things that we have bought, and also discount how having all that stuff didn’t necessarily make things great last time. If we think about Christmas lunch or dinner, few of us can plan how much food we will actually need and we aren’t very good at knowing how much we will
end up eating (or need to eat). We pile our plate high, because we don’t really know how much we need, but we do know how much we want: lots and lots. Just in case we miss out on something great. It’s the same with gifts. We often don’t plan, and so we are more susceptible to the gentle nudges of the marketers when we are stressed, in a hurry, and trying to do 10 things at once. HOW TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION Despite our belief that we are all individuals, making independent decisions and choosing what we want and when we want it, humans are social, conforming and compliant creatures. If we see “our people” are doing something, we tend to assume this is something we should also do. If we’re looking around and our environment is signalling this is what we do at Christmas time, then it’s easier to comply than to resist. Christmas is a tough time to commit to reducing consumption, but it is possible.
Resisting any natural response requires a commitment to the idea of resistance, and a willingness to practise that resistance at all times (we know the more we do something, the easier it becomes). Importantly, we should surround ourselves with people who will help us to resist, or at least won’t sabotage that resistance. This doesn’t mean cutting yourself off from society. But it does mean coming to terms with the idea you are open to manipulation, framing, priming and persuasion, and coming up with ways to avoid it. Focus on the idea of Christmas – time with family and friends, treating ourselves to novel food, eating all the great fruit that’s available this time of year – rather than succumbing to the commercial nudges that seem to have become imperative to Christmas. Give gifts if you wish, but think about what is moving you toward buying those gifts. With this knowledge, you might make a few better choices. /

YO-HO-HO AND A BOTTLE OF RUM Ancient Hangover Cures Did you slightly over-indulge in wine this Festive Season? Are you suffering from a throbbing headache, dry mouth, and nausea after the office Christmas party? The hair of the dog somehow does not appeal? Are you looking for time-tested cures? Fear not: these Greek and Roman remedies to alleviate a hangover – or prevent one – should come in handy. Text: Laurence Totelin: Senior Lecturer in Ancient History, Cardiff University / www.theconversation.com Images © iStockphoto.com
/ In the ancient understanding of the body, drunkenness and the attendant headache, nausea and dizziness, are caused by an imbalance in your humours. Excess wine will cause over-heating of your humours, and you must try to use cooling agents to feel better. DON’T BE A BARBARIAN Dilute your wine with water – the water will temper the heating effect of the wine. The Greeks and Romans frowned upon anyone who drank their wine “neat”, as in their opinion, this showed clear lack of self-control.
“Barbarians”, and in particular the northern Scythians, had a bad reputation among the Greeks and Romans for their drinking of undiluted wine, a clear sign of their lack of civilisation. It is from Scythia, however, that came the wise man Anacharsis (sixth century BCE), who allegedly uttered the following pearl of wisdom: “The vine bears three kinds of grapes: the first of pleasure, the next of intoxication, and the third of disgust.” Water in your wine will allow you to enjoy the first of these three grapes, without suffering from the poisoning effects of the other two.
WOMEN, STICK TO WHITE Try to drink white wine rather than red wine. Wine is, according to the ancients, haemopoietic – it creates blood. The ancients did not know that blood circulates in the body. Instead, they thought that food and drink were transformed into blood in the liver, from where it was distributed to the other organs, which used that blood up to perform functions such as breathing. Haemopoietic products such as wine are of course useful, but should be consumed carefully, as excess blood leads to all sorts of dangerous ailments. Red wine, because it is closer to blood in
INDWE
/71
theconversation.com
appearance, is more haemopoietic than white wine, they believed, and therefore more likely to make you feel unwell when over-consumed. This is particularly relevant if you are female, as according to the ancients, you are then less able to process food into blood (which handily also explains your need to menstruate). WEAR FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR Emulate the example of your teenager daughter – or niece, granddaughter, neighbour – at the latest music festival and wear a wreath of ivy or flowers while drinking. The smell of flowers such as roses or myrtle will cool down your bad humours and relieve any headache. But try to avoid flowers with a heavy scent such as lilies.
72/
INDWE
Believe it or not, Greek and Roman physicians devoted entire treatises to the topic of curative wreaths. Unfortunately, these works are now lost, save for short extracts, and as a result, I am not certain whether the wreath you have hung on your door for Christmas will serve this healing purpose. SOUR HUMOUR Drink vinegar, perhaps with the addition of some herbs or flowers. The soured wine will counteract the wine that has already soured in your belly. If you can’t stomach the vinegar you have drunk, you will be purged, which was considered a positive outcome in ancient medicine. Indeed, getting rid of bad humours is as good an effect as any.
ACTIVATE YOUR ALMONDS Eat five almonds before drinking, as according to the great pharmacologist Dioscorides (first century CE), this will prevent drunkenness. It can’t hurt, and chances are you will have already received a festive pack of nuts from your great aunt. MAKE FRIENDS WITH CABBAGE Put your Brussels sprouts and other cabbage to good use. The Greeks and Romans believed that the vine and the cabbage were natural enemies. They thought the vine had the capacity to perceive the smell of cabbage and refused to grow properly in the vicinity of the pungent vegetable. By extension, cabbage will counteract an excess of wine in your belly. Raw cabbage may work better than cooked.
READ THE CLASSICS Follow the wise advice of the author Vindanius Anatolius of Beirut (fourth century CE) and discuss ancient history to sober up. You will find sobering examples in stories such as that of the demise of Cleomenes, king of Sparta, who became mad because of his habit of drinking neat wine. Alternatively, concentrating on retelling or listening to ancient stories will distract you from incipient drunkenness. Or perhaps this will send you to sleep, which, all things considered, is probably no bad thing. Although the remedies outlined here are relatively safe, the author does not recommend their use and declines all responsibility. /

salads, light lunches, and the finest seafood Mozambique has to offer. All of which come with a large order of warm Mozambican hospitality and sincere, charming service. OCEAN SIGHTS & DELIGHTS Whether it be exploring the protected waters of the sheltered bay, diving with dolphins and eagle rays, feasting on fresh prawns or stargazing to the sound of gentle breaking waves, White Pearl Resorts is the perfect destination for unwinding. Sightings of big schools of Hammerhead and Zambezi sharks are
common during the summer months, together with pelagic fish on the deeper dives. Whale sharks are seen from October to February on the way to the dive spots, and divers are then allowed to hop out of the boat to snorkel with these gentle giants. Divers often encounter dolphins playing just behind the backline on the way to the dive sites. Tropical reef fish, eagle rays and an array of nudibranchs are always in the vicinity, plus you should always keep an eye out for Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles. There are dives for all levels of divers, from an 8 m openwater dive to deep blue 40 m dives for experienced, advanced divers.
Ponta Mamoli is home to one of the richest turtle nesting sites in southern Mozambique. Between November and February each year, Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles head to this stretch of coast to lay their eggs on its deserted beaches.

HOW SAFE IS AIRPORT WI-FI? Tips for Savvy Surfing
For many people the convenience of public Wi-Fi is invaluable – especially when you are waiting at an airport with lots of time to kill. However, it is important to know that this perk has risks. “Malicious Wi-Fi hotspots can be found in many public venues, not just at airports, so taking precautions is critical to ensuring a cybercriminal does not steal your data,” says Carey van Vlaanderen, CEO at ESET Southern Africa.
Text: Supplied Images © iStockphoto.com
/ We have all done it – connected to the free Wi-Fi without a second thought as to whether it is legitimate or not. We also seem to be quite happy to send out our personal details to an unknown supplier or hotel offering these services, just so we can get online. Yet, we should be more vigilant, as the risks are plentiful. The worst thing you can do is to assume a Wi-Fi network is legitimate – or actually run by the establishment you are in. It might be a decoy deployed by criminals.
Here are a few basic precautions to take to stay secure at airports during the holiday season and beyond: • Consider using a 3G or 4G hotspot instead of free public Wi-Fi hotspots. When your phone is connected to the mobile data network, it can convert the data stream into a Wi-Fi signal for other devices to share. The phone can still make calls and respond to texts whilst it is hosting the connection. If you are logging into a work network, use a
Virtual Private Network (VPN), and do not visit banking or shopping sites. • Once you are assured that the hotspot is legitimate, you probably want to check your email messages. This is best done via your laptop, as you can use the secure icon of the browsers (usually a lock icon or similar in your address book) to check that you are connected securely (that is, via HTTPS). • If you absolutely must connect to public Wi-Fi networks, be sure to connect to
INDWE
/81
a legitimate one. Sometimes attackers will set up a malicious network (an “evil twin” or “spoof”) to trick you into logging into a network with a similar name or even the same name. It never hurts to verify the correct address with the facility in question. • Limit activities to anything that does not require a username and password, as hackers who are monitoring network traffic are specifically looking for your login details. • Avoid, at all costs, logging into sensitive services such as banking applications or email when using public Wi-Fi, because criminals are always looking for ways to gain access to your banking details, and one way of doing just that is through an insecure online login. Whilst mobile banking, in theory, should be safe, this is only if you are using the official banking app, as there are a lot of copycat versions that people mistakenly download. • If you are going to use your computer in a risky environment, ensure your sharing function is switched off – you do not want unknown attackers having access to your files. On an Apple Mac you will find this option under “sharing preferences” and on a Microsoft Windows PC, your home group and sharing setting will vary according to your Operating System (OS). • Travellers will be on safe ground researching information, checking news sites or looking at maps of the local area, but anything financial, such as booking a hotel, is best done either via the data connection of your mobile device, or just over the phone. In general, it’s always good to use a basic security service such as an antimalware/ antivirus, and also consider a VPN. If you are looking for reputable security software, there are many good ones out there that cover nearly all operating systems. For example, ESET Smart Security Premium protects your Mac and Windows devices from cyber-threats and improves your chances of recovery if your device is lost or stolen. Make sure to take these precautions and do not let a cyber-thief steal your fun when you’re travelling. /

HA-KONA MATATA Hyundai Kona
Hyundai has launched its salvo to the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 and Renault Captur in the form of the Kona, which will appeal to the upwardly mobile, youngish buyer looking for a stylish, outdoorsy hatchback.
Text: Lerato Matebese Images © Hyundai South Africa
/ Hyundai SA has finally taken aim at the more stylish end of the crossover segment with the launch of the Kona. It slots in just above the Creta on the pricing hierarchy. Though it’s significantly smaller than its sibling, it boasts better specification levels and, dare I say it, superior build quality and finishes. In a segment that is awash with decidedly
88/
INDWE
good offerings, the Kona needs to have the right substance and clout to challenge the status quo and, thankfully, it has those bases covered. IT’S GOT THE LOOK The company’s new design language can be seen in the Kona’s visage, with its new cascading grille and headlights.
The Kona’s boutique hatch design includes some pseudo-off-road cladding, and some rather vivid colour palettes such as Acid Yellow, which has matching interior colour inserts on the air vents, seats and gear-lever housing. The cabin architecture itself is one that fuses high-quality plastics with technological appointments such as the 7”
infotainment screen that takes centre stage. Incorporated within the media system are features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications that – instead of using Bluetooth mirroring – require a cable to be accessed. Fit and finish, however, is a standout highlight of the Kona and this subtle elegance also trickles down into the overall driving experience. ON THE ROAD At launch, two engine derivatives were available: the surprisingly sprightly 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo engine that thumps out 88 kW and 172 Nm through a fivespeed manual transmission; and a 2.0-litre normally aspirated powerplant that produces 110 kW and 180 Nm combined with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Driving the models at the launch in power-sapping Gauteng altitude, it was the 1.0-litre variant that was the superior of the two powertrains, punching well above its weight in a linear, silky smooth disposition that defies its inherently thrumming, smallcapacity imbalanced nature. By contrast, the larger capacity engine felt lacklustre in its response and requires you to dig deeper into its throttle travel to get any meaningful forward momentum. Even so, it will likely be the more popular variant of the two by virtue of its self-shifting gearbox. Practicality is decent for the most part, with the manufacturer claiming a front legroom capacity of 1,054 mm, while the rear is said to have 880 mm. Luggage space, meanwhile, is pegged at 361 litres, which can comfortably accommodate two suitcases. Interestingly, while at the launch of the Kona, I also happened to test its arch-rival, the Mazda CX-3, and the Japanese model seems to have more
universal appeal. However, where the Kona trumps the CX-3 is in the cabin space, thanks to more shoulder room and rear passenger space. SAFE & SOUND Safety has not been left by the wayside, either, with the Kona billed as one of the safest cars in its segment – confirmed by the five-star safety rating that it achieved in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). Active safety features include an Antiskid Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Downhill Brake Control, Blind-Spot Collision
Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Passive safety features, meanwhile, include driver and front passenger airbags, complemented by curtain and side-impact airbags. FINAL SAY Pricing is very much in the ballpark of the Mazda CX-3, with the 1.0-litre Executive priced at R379,900 and the 2.0-litre Executive weighing in at R399,000. And, when all is considered, the Kona is a great addition to the segment. It will do well to give the Korean brand an additional gust of wind to elevate its brand equity among trendy buyers. /

CAN I USE YOUR
WI-FI PASSWORD? A Modern Guide to Meeting the Neighbours There are many reasons why it could be helpful to befriend your neighbour. One of the most important these days is to find out whether your current electrical outage has been caused by local load-shedding, or simply by forgetting to enter your voucher code earlier that evening. But, now more so than ever before, making contact with the people who live next door can be a tricky endeavour. People tend to keep to themselves these days, so popping by with a welcome basket might not be as warmly received as it may have been 20 years ago. Text: Kayla Cloete Images © iStockphoto.com
/ “Regardless of whether it’s somebody new who moves in or if you are the new addition to the area, befriending those who live in close proximity to you has its benefits. On the flipside, getting on their bad side could have some seriously awkward consequences. So, making the right impression from the get-go can be crucial to enjoying your new home,” says Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa. Based on conversations between homeowners and agents over the years, RE/MAX of Southern Africa has formulated some tricks on how to make contact with your new neighbours in the modern era. THE COINCIDENTAL CONVERSATION Whether you’re pulling into the driveway, collecting your mail or simply in your front garden at the same time, you are bound to run into your new neighbour eventually. Use this moment as an opportunity to establish contact. Based on your level of confidence, this could be as simple as a smile and a nod to acknowledge that you’ve seen them, a fleeting “hi”, or a fully-fledged introduction involving handshakes and name exchanges. Based on this interaction, you can get a feel for how receptive your neighbours may be to establishing a relationship with you. Some people simply prefer not to get involved with their neighbours. If they are short
90/
INDWE
After they’ve assisted you, you then have the opportunity to thank them for their help by inviting them over for a cup of coffee or, depending on how helpful and receptive they were, perhaps even for dinner.
and dismissive to your greeting, it might be better to take a step back and let them make the next move. THE REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE If you’re a shy person, it may be less stressful to go with a purpose rather than to knock on their door just to introduce yourself. People generally like to feel helpful – just don’t be too ambitious with your requests. For a modern-day approach, ditch the request for a cup of sugar and opt instead to enquire about their internet setup to find out which networks work best in your area. You could also enquire whether there are any nearby recycling collection points, or ask to borrow a pair of scissors to cut the packaging the scissors you just purchased came in. After they’ve assisted
you, you then have the opportunity to thank them for their help by inviting them over for a cup of coffee or, depending on how helpful and receptive they were, perhaps even for dinner. THE WELCOME SIGN Without realising it, you may be making yourself completely inaccessible to your neighbours who secretly have been dying to meet you all along. Closed curtains, safety gates and burglar bars are hardly inviting cues. If you are open to your neighbours popping in, then you need to make your home welcoming to visitors. By no means ditch the safety precautions, but perhaps pop a welcome mat outside and leave the curtains open when you’re at home. It also helps to be out and about
in the local community. Taking your dog for walks, going for jogs, playing with your kids in the park and shopping at the local grocery store all present great opportunities to meet the people who live nearby. “Your neighbours can play a huge role in how long you choose to stay in a suburb. When looking for properties, buyers should remember to find out if the seller has ever had any disputes with the people living nearby. Buyers should keep in mind that it’s not always possible to avoid bad neighbours, but even if there are no problems with the neighbours when you first move in, this could change at any stage, should the neighbours decide to sell,” Goslett concludes. INSURE YOUR INFO The Importance of Cyber-Insurance
For most small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) in South Africa, budgets are tight and owners constantly have to prioritise spending. An expense like cybersecurity and thoughts of the nebulous world of cybercrime might be downgraded in favour of more tangible, urgent requirements – such as staff, physical security, and stock. Yet, as the risk of cybercrime becomes a daily reality for SMEs (it is no longer a case of if you get hacked, but when), business owners have to take a fresh look at budgets and reconsider where money is spent. Text: Colin Thornton, Managing Director of Turrito Networks and Dial a Nerd Images © iStockphoto.com
/ Now that ransomware attacks are happening almost daily – and according to Cybersecurity Ventures will occur every 14 seconds by the end of 2019 – businesses have to consider taking out cyber-insurance to protect themselves against losses. Ransomware damages, alone, are forecast to cost industries up to $8 billion in 2018.
DOES CYBER-INSURANCE EVEN EXIST? Indeed, for most local business owners, cyber-insurance is a vague and often new concept, yet it has been around for many years. Up until recently, cyber-insurance was far too costly for the average small business – and was therefore not even a consideration. Now, however, given the prevalence of cybercrime in the business
environment (cybercrime will cost business up to R78 trillion by 2021, notes Cisco) cyber-insurance has become far more affordable – and far more critical – for SMEs. According to certain industry analysts, entry-level cyber-insurance can cost between R5,000 and R10,000 per year, which is cheaper than many motor vehicle insurance plans. This despite the
INDWE
/93
fact that, in the world we live in today, the chances of falling victim to a cyberattack are far greater than those of having a serious road accident. BUT WHY NOW? Today, whether you are a sprawling multinational business or a three-man band selling coffee, your business is at risk of cybercrime. This is simply because every modern business relies on Internet connectivity and digital services – thus providing access, in one form or another, to savvy hackers. Yes, even if you do the right thing, and have cybersecurity in the form of anti-virus software and firewalls, hackers can still get in. Even the most well-known of brands – such as British Airways, which presumably has an army of in-house IT brains – has been hacked. Just recently, the airline announced that over 380,000 customers had their data stolen – putting these customers at risk of cyberfraud and financial loss. As a result, British Airways could face a huge fine, in addition to
94/
INDWE
potential civil lawsuits, not to mention massive reputational damage. For business owners, it is critical to remember that cyber-attacks, whether in the form of ransomware, email phishing, or otherwise, come saddled with a variety of costs – that arguably need to be covered by a robust insurance plan. Such costs can include potential ransom payments, loss of business or operational time, profit loss, reputational damage, and lawsuits. Also, given the increasing stringency of data protection legislation – such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe and the local Protection of Personal Information Act 2013 (PoPI) – business owners must also consider the risk of fines or legal costs in the event of data loss or mismanagement. Such laws emphasise the fact that as with traditional “stock”, data does not only require physical protection – it must also be insured in the event of theft or loss. The reality is that we live in a time during which business owners have a responsibility to protect the data of their customers,
or face the wrath of legislators who are under pressure to guard consumer privacy. HYPER CONNECTIVITY, HYPER RISK Looking ahead, as the Internet of Things (IoT) whereby connected devices speak to each other, becomes more prevalent in industry and in business, the cyber risk will only increase. While Artificial Intelligence and machine learning has the potential to provide an extra layer of security, business owners must still plan for the worst. The good news, however, is that, as general awareness increases, financial services companies and insurers are beginning to introduce more innovative – and accessible – plans that can alleviate the risks of cyberfraud. Without a doubt, if SMEs are not already looking at cyber-insurance, they should immediately begin investigating the options available to them. LET IT GO, LET IT GO, LET IT GO! Avoiding Conflict During the Festive Season
Every holiday season, families and friends get together to share affection, kindness and experiences. In the ideal holiday atmosphere, one often depicted in commercials and the media, such get-togethers are places of warmth, appreciation and general happiness. If you find yourself in such a family, count yourself lucky and blessed. If your holiday is marked with stress and difficulty, then you may be part of the rest of the population, where the holiday season brings real issues to light in addition to the positive experiences of the season. Text: Nicholas Joyce: Psychologist, University of South Florida / www.theconversation.com Images Š iStockphoto.com
96/
INDWE
/ In my day-to-day work as a psychologist who specialises in mental health therapy with young adults, the holidays always bring up deep-seated issues. For many, family is something they have avoided by moving away to study or work, and thus coming home for the holidays forces them to engage in what they have successfully avoided for months. For the emotionally ill-equipped person, this sets the stage for disaster and even poor health. Long-term stress has been linked to digestive problems, heart disease, sadness and depression. Some studies have shown that people who undergo regular stress contract more viral infections. Fortunately, we can prepare ourselves for these encounters, go into them with open eyes and perhaps manage them better. THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE I work with people who often say things like, “If only my dad didn’t drink too much”; “I wish my mom would accept how I choose to live my life”; “I need my brother to stop teasing me all the time.” While it is true that these statements reflect deeply held desires and such changes could bring about a drastic amount of relief to the person’s life, there is also a reason these changes have not been made previously. I call this the “rejecting reality” standpoint, and all humans get held back by it. We spend years longing for a reality that is not true: A mom who doesn’t care about our weight, a dad who will express his affection toward us, a sibling who doesn’t take his own issues out on us. Under the rejecting reality mind-set, we enter our homes for the holidays full of hope that this time will be different, only to be disappointed for another year. And what happens when we are hurt? We withdraw or lash out, thereby causing more conflict. Upon closer examination, you might find that such a cycle has existed in your family for years. The alternative, then, is to begin to cultivate what I term the “acceptance mindset”. This involves dealing with exactly what is true, what is factual and what is realistic, rather than all the things that we wish could be. Such a mind-set involves opening ourselves to the pain involved
theconversation.com
in fully realising our less-than-ideal lives. It means I will go to a holiday dinner knowing full well that my brother is going to tease me, or my mom is going to comment on my appearance. Entering with this reality makes us less reactive and more capable of choosing what, if anything, we want to do about this dynamic. TO CHANGE OR LET GO I teach my clients a life skill called the “letting go process”. It involves three steps: • Notice and allow an experience to be there. • Decide if the experience is useful or not. • If useful, do something about it. If not, let it go. Such a process has to be utilised continually during the holidays, when we are often confronted with dynamics and personalities we try to escape in our dayto-day lives.
So, what does this look like in practice? Jane is going home for a week to be with her family for the holidays. She is already dreading the trip, and in particular having to interact with her mother, whom Jane knows will comment on her weight gain and criticise her for being single. So, using the letting go system, when Jane arrives and her mother asks her why Jane looks fatter than the last time she saw her, Jane: • Notices her hurt and frustrations with her mother after the comment, and adopts the attitude of being OK with having these feelings in the moment. • Considers the usefulness of the feelings. • Decides on whether to go a “change” route or a “let go” route. The change route would involve engaging in a behaviour to address the experience she is having, namely her mother’s comments toward her.
INDWE
/97
As you head into your holiday events, take a minute to notice what thoughts, feelings and urges come up for you. This is just information, and all of it can help us to prepare a plan.
Jane could take an assertive stance and respond with an “I statement” such as: “I feel really upset when you comment on my weight, and I would appreciate it if you refrained from doing so for the rest of the time I am home.” At this point we do not know how Mom will respond, but we focus less on that outcome and instead on the process of what Jane can control. The process here is Jane’s own behaviour in response to her mother. Mom may get defensive or angry, but Jane can feel good that she is standing up for herself. Alternatively, Jane could also choose the letting go route. By being able to notice her hurt and frustration in the moment, Jane becomes less reactive
98/
INDWE
and is better able to not engage with her mother in an argument like has happened in the past. Jane is able to respond to Mom in a different way, or possibly not at all, changing the subject entirely. Jane could simply respond by asking Mom how she is doing or acknowledge that yes, she has gained weight. Jane is able to prevent her reaction from further escalating the possible conflict in the moment. This may seem overly simplistic, but with practice we can better let go of things that used to catch us and trap us into acting in unproductive ways. PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE As you head into your holiday events, take a minute to notice what thoughts,
feelings and urges come up for you. This is just information, and all of it can help us to prepare a plan. With this information available to you ahead of time, consider which route you want to go. Do you need to go a change route and address an issue, or do you need to let it go as something that is out of your control? Whichever route you choose, you will now be more fully able to cope with whatever the situation is. And just because something did not go well the first time you did it, does not mean it cannot go well the next time. So even if Mom didn’t respect your wishes last time, it may be worth it to try it again – even if the only reward is feeling feel good about asserting yourself. /

IN-FLIGHT SOCKS FOR REDUCING SWELLING
Why wear flight socks? Legs are prone to swelling on longhaul flights, partially due to the cabin pressure and sitting in the same position for long periods of time. By wearing ORTHOFIT IN FLIGHT SOCKS, blood circulation is aided through the sock's graduated compression system, reducing swelling and the risk of deep vain thrombosis, and leaving you feeling fresh on arrival. • Graduated compression reduces swelling • Reduces risk of DVT on long flights • Reduces faigue • Soft, comfortable and non-itchy • Feel fresh on arrival
Endorsed by vascular specialists as a proven aid to circulation, flight socks reduce the risks associated with long-haul flights.

Books Must Read
The Theory of Flight By Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu Genie, said to have hatched from a golden egg, spends her childhood playing in a field of sunflowers as her country reawakens after a fierce civil war. But Genie’s story stretches back much further: It tells of her grandfather, who quenched his wanderlust by walking into the Indian Ocean, and of her father, who spent countless hours building model aeroplanes to catch up with him. It is the tale of her mother, a singer self-styled after Dolly Parton with a dream of travelling to Nashville, and of her grandmother, who did everything in her power to raise her children to have character. With the lightest of touches, a cast of unforgettable characters, and moments of surreal beauty, The Theory of Flight sketches decades of history in an unnamed Southern African nation.

From making the most of special offers to utilising the power of exponential growth in your investments, this book is the quintessential primer to the myriad ways maths and finance intersect.
Becoming By Michelle Obama With a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama is one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerising storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her. This ranges from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago and her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it – in her own words and on her own terms.

Meet the Crew Have you ever wondered who is flying the plane when you travel on SA Express? Or wanted to know more about what a job as a cabin crew member is like? Well, now’s your chance! Every month we will introduce a few members of our SA Express family, because by getting to know them, you become part of the SA Express family too.
Tintswalo Mekhare Cabin Crew Length of Service With SA Express: 10 years Tell us more about yourself. I’m very talkative, I laugh easily. I’m kind and I’m friendly. I adapt easily to different environments. I’m a hard worker, and when I put mind to something I never let it go until I get it right.
Text & Image © Supplied What is your favourite part of your job? The flexibility – our working hours are great. We do have long days but when we have short days, they really are short days. We also don’t have to drive or sit in traffic going home and coming to work. What do you find most challenging about your job? Flight delays, when they do occasionally happen, make our days long. What do you like about working for SA Express? SA Express has risen from humble beginnings and feels like home, plus we all get along very easily. What would people find surprising about your job? Except for scheduled long turn-arounds or night stops, we don’t spend more than an hour in our outstations. Literally, we disembark passengers, clean the aircraft and then board again. We don’t even go to the terminal buildings unless necessary. As a result, many of us hardly know our outstations, even if we’ve flown to them a lot. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters on board? A couple was arguing about the Great Fish River while we were airborne, and I didn’t even know where we were myself. The lady then asked me: “Miss, is this not the Great Fish River?” I turned around looked outside, and I said with a smile: “Yes ma’am, it is.” I then walked past, and left the couple in peace but not before hearing the lady telling her husband: “See, I told you I know my rivers!”

Special services Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators. Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. Owing to limited storage space in the aircraft cabin, cabin baggage may be placed in the Skycheck at the aircraft for hold stowage. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our
flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not be required during the flight on to the Skycheck cart at the boarding steps of the aircraft. Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Baggage liability Valuable items such as cameras and accessories, computers – including laptops and notebooks – mobile telephones, perfumes, aftershaves, colognes, legal and company documents and legal tender – including cash, credit cards and cheques – bullion, leather jackets, all types of jewellery and any other items with a value in excess of R400 must be removed from either checked-in or Skycheck baggage as the airline is not liable for loss or damage to these items. Verified baggage claims are settled on the basis adopted by IATA (International Airlines Transport Association): payment of US$20 per 1kg of checkedin luggage, to a maximum of 20kg ($400) We Fly For You SA Express Airways prides itself on aiming to offer incomparable service standards. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. SA Express proudly launched its new brand on 2 December 2009 at OR Tambo International Airport. The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. The new proposition “We Fly for You” is set to position SA Express as a premier intra-regional African brand. The main objective of the re-brand is to ensure that SA Express is distinctive yet still
aligned to the country’s mainline carrier. SA Express’s unique positioning as an airline that provides a bespoke, personalised travel experience was the rationale behind the proposition “We Fly for You”. The new brand mark is in line with the symbol and colours of the national flag, encouraging national pride. The new brand will be applied to all brand touch-points throughout the operation as well as the staff uniform. Awards SA Express has won the AFRAA Regional Airline of the Year Award at the end of 2009, and the Allied and Aviation Business Corporate Award. Our airline was also the recipient of the Annual Airline Reliability Award from Bombardier at the end of 2007. Other previous awards include the International Star Quality Award, which indicates our commitment to service excellence, while our prominence as one of the top 500 best managed companies is proof of our success as a business. Onboard service The airline’s onboard service is unique and offers passengers a variety of meals or snacks. The airline pioneered its unique meal-box concept, and meal choices are frequently updated and designed using balanced food criteria: appearance, taste and nutritional value. Passengers can also enjoy a wine and malt service on specified flights as well as refreshments on all flights. Light snacks will be served on selected flights. Our customers can expect a safe, comfortable, quality air-travel experience, with the added benefits of frequency, reliability, on-time departures and unmatched value for money.
We fly for you About us SA Express is a domestic and regional, passenger and cargo carrier which was established on 24th April 1994. Passenger Letters Dear SA Express I write this mail with gratitude and admiration for the extraordinary customer care I recently received from Lois Sakoor, which not only calmed me down during a difficult situation but humbled me. In October, my colleague and I were scheduled to fly from Kimberley to Johannesburg on another airline. It was, however, grounded due to technical reasons and we were unable to fly. Appalled at the fact that no one could assist me to get onto another flight, I walked to the hospitality area in quite a state. As I am a frequent flyer, Lois Sakoor noticed that I was very unhappy and approached me to enquire what the problem was. I explained the situation and that was all I needed to do. Lois arranged for me to get a seat on SA1104, at which point she realised that the credit card facility was out of order. To add to the challenge, Kimberley Airport does not have an ATM. The lady then took control with her calm and collected manner. She arranged to hold our bags, drove us to an ATM in her own car, and then brought us back to the airport. She further printed boarding passes and tried desperately to find an extension cord so I could work on my laptop. How Lois Sakoor keeps a steady, motivated, committed and dedicated attitude towards passengers in the Kimberley Airport under such unacceptable conditions astounds me! Thank you, Lois, thank you! SA Express, you have a gem in the Diamond City. Hold onto her, recognise and appreciate her, give her an increase, promote her to manager. She held your brand high and defied every challenge we presented to her with a smile. I’m sold on SA Express and will not fly any other airline to Kimberley, regardless of the price. Kind regards Ushama Jerrier
Congratulations to Ushama Jerrier who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a Samsonite Fuze suitcase valued at R2,999.
To whom it may concern I would like to express my sincere thanks for the great service that I received from SA Express recently. I left my driver’s licence on the plane after I disembarked in Joburg from a flight from Hoedspruit. I received a call within minutes of getting off the plane from a gentleman in your office to let me know that my licence had been found. Unfortunately, I didn’t get his name. He arranged for the licence to be delivered to the door of the arrivals hall and I was easily able to get it back. I am so impressed by the great service I received, and would like you to pass on my thanks to him and to everyone else who made this possible. Kind regards Professor Mark Robertson
Do You Have Something to Say? Let us know what is on your mind by sending an email to customercare@flyexpress.aero. Letters may be edited, shortened or translated from their original language.

“It’s all us” Many kitchen suppliers rarely venture beyond manufacturing carcasses and basic doors. At The Kitchen Studio, every single component of our kitchen and bedroom furniture is manufactured by us under one roof - which means that we are wholly responsible for your finished product and guarantees. You can be assured that your entire kitchen and bedroom – from door to moulding – has been touched by the same celebrated artistry and craftsmanship that has helped us remain one of South Africa’s leading kitchen companies.
