Philanthropic Polo Laureus Polo Cup, Val de Vie Estate, Paarl Defining the Narrative, Gallery MOMO, Cape Town Gallery MOMO Cape Town will be presenting a fresh range of paintings this summer in an attempt to redefine this fascinating medium in the 21st Century. Defining the Narrative intends to examine the scope and extent of paint through the gaze of emerging South African painters and mixedmedia artists. These include Alexandra Karakashian, Swain Hoogervorst, Gina Heyer, Ziyanda Majozi and Neo Matloga. In the age of technological advancements, paint continues to hold its own. It is a medium that carries an extensive history, and yet is open to manipulation and reconstruction today. In juxtaposition to this will be paintings by established painters represented by Gallery MOMO, including Florine Demosthene, Robert Pruitt, Blessing Ngobeni, Jonathan Hindson, and Kimathi Donkor. Darling Music Experience, Peron Theatre, Darling The 11th annual Darling Music Experience’s 2016 festival will once again be enriched by an opera alla breve production when acclaimed young opera students will perform in an abridged version of Mozart’s classic opera, Der Entfuehrung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio). Bites Harvest Time The marula harvest lasts for two to three months at most, beginning in January and sometimes extending into March. That’s when the SubSaharan plains are suffused with the heady fragrance of ripening wild marulas. Sweet and exotic, a seductive scent surfaces as the fruit turn a golden yellow. Close to Phalaborwa in Limpopo, the marulas are gathered by rural women from 25 communities and brought to various collection points. The harvesters are paid per kilo for what they pick, earning a valuable source of income for themselves and their families. Only those marulas that are fully ripened and free of blemishes are used by Amarula’s production team. The fruit is destoned and pulped, and then fermented on the skins and made into marula wine. The wine is double distilled into a marula spirit and spends two years in small French oak casks. Fresh dairy cream gives the finishing touch to Amarula Cream.

Pack a Picnic A Guide to Outdoor Eating in the Winelands

Summer is often synonymous with the picnic season, and what better way to spend a glorious summer’s day than with a picnic in the beautiful Cape Winelands.

Summer in the Western Cape means that on weekends, and even weekdays – for those who have the privilege – you may sit back, relax, and enjoy the sun in beautiful surroundings. ’Tis the season to sprawl out your chequered blanket and enjoy a picnic with a glass of wine in hand. This practice of al fresco dining dates back to the 17th century. However, almost 500 years later, it’s not quite the aristocratic affair it once was. It is now far more accessible, while offering a great deal of enjoyment for both adults and children alike. If you are based in Cape Town, or any of the Mother City’s surrounding areas, then taking a day trip to the Winelands is well worth the effort. With over 500 wine farms and estates to choose from, many of which offer prepacked picnics, Indwe has, however, made the selection easier with our picks for perfect picnics.

Uitkyk Wine Estate Uitkyk Wine Estate is situated on the south-western slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain with a lovely view of Table Mountain in the distance. This historic wine estate boasts an 18th century Georgian style Manor House (of which there are only three in the country) and offers picnics on its lawns. Sip on Uitkyk’s recently released wines, while enjoying an opulent picnic basket. The baskets include a French loaf, cheeses, patés, pesto’s, olives, a charcuterie selection, smoked salmon, fruit, a decadent chocolate brownie, and a wine of your choice. There are hidden corners, ancient trees and expansive lawns on which to enjoy this sumptuous fare. One of the added bonuses is that guests may enjoy a game of croquet in between lazing on their picnic blankets. At the charming Allée Bleue Estate, open patches of grass are especially reserved for picnic lovers with laid back, chequered cloth bedecked tables and delicious country fare. After a welcome glass of MCC you can tuck into your glorious gourmet picnic basket. Discover inside a feast of homemade farm bread served with jam, chutney, onion and aniseed marmalade, a variety of salads, soy and sesame cured beef stir-fry, as well as salted chicken served with coconut shavings and dried mango. And to top it all are artisanal cheeses with homemade mini milk tarts and farm picked fresh fruit for dessert. It’s quite a feast, but taking a walk to the farm’s famous herb gardens will relieve you of some of the calorific intake. If you pop into Allée Bleue for a picnic on a Sunday, you can expect live music at no added cost. There is also the luxury of a jungle gym, jumping castle and a trampoline to keep children amused for hours while you enjoy a leisurely lunch under the trees. 2016 is barely underway, yet most of us have probably already forgotten our New Year’s resolutions. There is no time like the present to kick-start those good intentions and rev up your life with a happiness make-over. It’s possible to achieve the happiness you’ve been searching for, and it starts with positive thinking. Before you think that this is another pretendto-be-positive-and-your-life-will-change article, let’s get real for a moment. Not everyone is as happy as they want to be, and there are no quick fixes for those of us who find it hard to be a regular ray of sunshine every day. That doesn’t mean that happiness is reserved for a lucky few, however, it simply means that some need to work a little harder to get their happiness on! • Don’t expect to find happiness somewhere in the future. We are inclined to think of happiness as something we will achieve one day. Happiness is the journey and not the destination. It is what you encounter on a daily basis in the small things around you – the joy of walking in the rain; smiling at someone and watching their smile grow in amazement that a stranger smiled at them; hiding your chocolate and devouring it on your own. These are the daily encounters with real happiness that we so often overlook. • Find the positive in it all. To think positively has become such a cliché that some people have stopped trying to do it altogether. Fact is, the more positivity we try to see in the experiences we have every day, the more we are able to see it. Give it a try for just one week, and see the difference. If positive thinking is the only bit of effort you need to put back in to get your happiness back, then it’s time for you to make the decision to turn

this day into one filled with hope and new possibilities. • Have a dream. It’s been said that a life lived in fear is a life half lived, but considering that some live their lives without a dream is just as sad. Everyone needs a dream to hold on to. It may be small or life changing but people need that something to look forward to. Whether it is to climb Kilimanjaro, to go hot air ballooning, or even buying a new pair of shoes, work towards achieving your dream and, once you have, find another. Don’t be afraid to give up on a dream if it is no longer a priority, as long as you replace it with another, more relevant dream. • Identify the stumbling blocks that limit your happiness and potential. We all have stumbling blocks that may keep us from experiencing happiness. These may be fear, anxiety, negative experiences in our past, feelings of guilt or resentment, and feeling that for some reason we do not deserve to be happy. Write your stumbling blocks down, examine them, understand them, and then let them go. Take the paper, tear it into tiny pieces or burn it. Let go of anything that is holding you back. If necessary, consult with a professional to assist you in addressing the issues. • Resolve to take responsibility only for what you have control over. You are not responsible for your teenagers’ failed relationships or your husband’s

reprimand at work. It is not your responsibility to fix everyone’s problems for them. Of course we want to save our loved ones from experiencing pain, but the best you can do is listen attentively, reassure them, and not interfere. Discuss the issues without judgment and give advice where it is asked, but always let them learn their own life lessons. • Your mind is the seat of your happiness. Your happiness does not depend on what your child, your partner, or your friends think of you. We all want to be accepted by other people and we all need encouragement and recognition, but we should decide whose opinion of us is important. Once you have decided on that, keep it in mind and understand that although their opinions count, they do not make you happy. What makes you happy is you, and what you think of your encounters with life. It is a simple fact of life that no new friend or partner will make you happy if you’re not happy in yourself. Take it in, understand it, and move on. • Learn to love yourself. Loving yourself is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your loved ones. Loving yourself

makes you realise you are worthy and deserve the best. • Set aside time to pamper yourself, doing what gives you joy. Go to a movie or arrange to have a facial. Arrange to go for a walk or a hike with friends (even if they are fourlegged), buy yourself a weekly bunch of fresh flowers, have quiet times, visit old age homes and sow some cheer (it will make you feel good about yourself). Develop a new hobby, replace the couch cushions, bring in some colour, or change the way you dress. • Do something different or exciting each week. This could be something small or big, something new like smiling at everyone on your way to work, ordering a new dish at a restaurant, wearing a new colour lipstick, acknowledging something your child or partner did, as well as the person at the supermarket check-out. Being happy is sometimes a case of getting happy and then staying happy more than anything else. Whatever your disposition towards life or your position in it, there will always be reasons for you to find happiness, and life itself should be your reason for staying that way. Never settle for less than your worth because, believe me, you’re worth more to someone in your life than you know.

Johannesburg has a fickle attitude to socialising, with restaurants, cafes and clubs quickly slipping in and out of fashion. To stand the test of time, however, the good old pub – those timeless, welcoming places where you instantly feel at ease – should have enough character to outlive the whims of fashion, and enough atmosphere to attract some interesting human characters too. Whether you go for the company or to wind down with a quiet drink in the corner, we’ve scouted out a few gems for you.

Giles This is a great pub for after-work drinks and good food in a convivial atmosphere. In the early evenings, the socialising spills out onto the pavement in front, while sports fans hunker down in the bar to watch TV. The atmosphere fairly crackles when big sports events are on. It has quiz nights and wine tasting evenings too. Giles once had a reputation as a chat-up bar, although I’m too old to vouch for that now. Open from noon till at least 23h00, it is closed on Sundays except for the last Sunday of every month, when you can pre-book for a wine tasting evening. You can find it at 9 Grafton Avenue, Craighall Park.

Katy and James If you’re good at planning ahead, make a note to check out the unusual décor and fun atmosphere of Sir James van der Merwe and Katy’s Palace Bar, twin venues at 6 Desmond Street in Kramerville. Sir James is a classic, laid-back old bar with a billiards

room. It’s full of quirky décor that will keep you fascinated if you tire of pocketing balls and people-watching. It’s open every Wednesday from 16h00 to midnight. Katy’s boasts a funky mix of arts and artefacts from around the world, as well as great views of the Sandton skyline from its rooftop. It only opens on the first Sunday of the month from 10h00 to 18h00, with a vinyl record market and a live band too. In between, you can hire either venue for private functions.

The Potato Shed This bar may be the key that keeps people coming back to newly revitalised Newtown. It’s currently the hippest part of town after a R6 billion renovation that brought a hotel, gym, shops and offices to the area behind the Market Theatre. The Potato Shed was built in 1911, and is now a funky bar and restaurant. There are 16 craft beers and “keg cocktails”, which are ready mixed and poured from the barrel. Barrelaged cocktails have to be worth a try! The décor has a rustic, tradesman’s touch to suit the historic building with its high

ceilings and massive doors that slide back to let the air in. The food has a market-life touch too, with lamb on the spit and potatoes presented in several tempting ways.

The Zebra Inn Also benefiting from the inner city revival, The Zebra Inn, with the run down area it once languished in now transformed by the vibrant Maboneng developments, is attracting a new generation to 252 Albertina Sisulu Road. The bar is upstairs, above a carpentry shop that the owner also runs. On the outside it’s painted in bold black and white zebra stripes, and inside the walls are hung with countless hunting trophies. It’s generally a low-key place with a traditional jukebox, but at weekends the pint of ale crowd is replaced by a wine and cocktail one, and the jukebox is silenced while a DJ takes over. It is open from noon every day.

Kitchener’s Bar Braamfontein is another back-in-fashion inner city area, full of northern suburbanites who feel smug and edgy by daring to go downtown. I’m among them, and Kitchener’s bar is one of the area’s liveliest destinations. It’s Joburg’s second oldest pub (after the Guildhall) and the old-

fashioned bar now reverberates with live music and even comedy on some evenings, making it a pub by day, party spot by night. I’d recommend going for the vibe and the drinks rather than the food, although bar meals are available. Kitcheners is an architectural gem inside and out, and on Saturdays its courtyard turns into a mini flea market. It’s easy to strike up a conversation with the barflies, some of whom look like they’ve been there since it opened sometime around 1898. It’s on the corner of Juta and De Beer Streets.

Brazen Head For live music, try the Brazen Head in Sandton. Fake Irish pubs aren’t my favourite, but this one is interesting, and offers a nice veranda and the unusual addition of a library. There’s entertainment about four nights a week, with the music ranging from solo artists to small bands performing jazz, blues and rock. The bar offers a choice of beers on tap, a variety of bottled beers, and the obligatory cocktails and shooters. A big plus is that you can dine while you watch the bands, with typical pub grub like pies, casseroles, curries and eisbein. Soccer may be seen as a male-dominated world, but for Nomvano Mbathiso, getting the youth off the street to play the beautiful game was an initiative she is now turning into a business. Indwe spoke to her to find out more.

What is your background? I was born in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. After finishing matric in 1994 and a computer course in 1998, I worked as a fish wholesaler and supermarket cashier before finding myself unemployed in 2013.

What inspired you to start the Ayatshisa Mateki (“Try Again”) Football Club? In our area, unemployment, especially among the youth, is increasing. There are so many children on the street without any formal education and young adults without any jobs. My husband and I felt a need to offer these young people a safe haven and a purpose in life to try and keep them from turning to drugs, alcohol, and crime.

Why did you choose the name? The name reflects my understanding that in soccer, as in life, there are both ups and downs and that one should never give up trying to succeed.

What was it like when you started? We wanted to do everything on our own and didn’t have much of a plan in place. When we decided to get involved in tournaments, we realised just how unfit our players were and we lost all the games. Since then we have come up with a structure and proper training programme, and we have been winning every game. And the higher up we move in the league, the better our chances of being paid for these games by the organisers.

How is it going right now? There are currently 52 active members and the club has four divisions, including a senior team and under-13,

under-15, and under-17 teams. Thanks to sponsorships we have basic equipment, and currently we are using the open space near the R300 in Mitchells Plain for practice and matches. We gather players from surrounding areas and have joined a local league association called the Mandalay league.

What impact has the academy had on the youth? Our coach, Ndiko Hardson Mavata, was previously affiliated with the Khayelitsha Football Association, and we can definitely see the improvement in our players since he started coaching the teams. We want to win this league, play in the Castle division, and then go on to play in the Vodacom National First Division (NFD), at which point our players will earn a salary.

What challenges have you faced over the years? We’ve struggled with the transportation of players, accessing training facilities, joining the league in terms of registration fees, and registering players to the South African Football Association. We won some tournaments and now have some cash, although my husband and I had to pay the rest out of our pockets. Being unemployed, it’s challenging, as I don’t have much money to put back into the club. So I know what it is like to have nothing and to struggle to survive.

How have you overcome these difficulties? At first, we never thought of charging the players, which created a massive problem for us in terms of funds. But we now have a plan in place that the University of

Stellenbosch Business School assisted us with. Players pay a membership fee as well as a monthly subscription fee to assist with the transport. Supporters also pay an entry fee to watch the games.

How did the intensive nine-month Small Business Academy course help you? The University of Stellenbosch Business School helped me a lot in terms of turning the soccer club into a business and also giving me the relevant skills to grow. Financial planning and budgeting were new to me. I didn’t even think about planning in advance and coming up with ideas on how to make money. Now I have the skills to plan, to project the required capital we need (and the ways in which to raise it), to understand the importance of marketing, and to see the opportunities available to us. More importantly, I have the confidence to know that I can run a successful business. They have made me think differently about the club.

What are your goals for the future of the soccer club? Our goals are to reduce crime, alcohol, and drug abuse by keeping our youth busy in sport. We also want to create employment through soccer and play in the Premier Soccer League in five years.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs? Don’t be afraid. Just do it and never give up.

This year, the culmination of one of the world’s most ambitious engineering projects will attempt to blast a vehicle across the Northern Cape’s Hakskeenpan. The aim is to set a new land speed record. If plans pan out, the “car” will travel faster than a bullet fired from a gun, covering a mile in just 3.6 seconds.

It’s set to be a big year for the Northern Cape. The country’s largest, most sparsely populated province is set to host a ground-breaking global event while bringing enormous focus to the region’s ambition of promoting itself as the destination for extreme endeavours. If all goes to plan, October will see the culmination of the UK’s Bloodhound supersonic car project unfolding in a far flung corner of the Northern Cape known as Hakskeenpan. This vast, flat salt pan, located in the wedge of South Africa between Namibia and Botswana, has been identified as the ideal location to attempt a breathtaking new land speed record – one that will, in just a few seconds, challenge all existing notions of what’s possible. The project, launched in October 2008, is an endeavour by scientists and engineers to create a vehicle that can travel 1,000 miles per hour – that’s 1,610 km/h. The idea is almost

unfathomable – imagine a car covering the length of four football fields in a single second. Creating a car that will move at such supersonic speeds has meant that the bodywork needs to be as tough as that of a submarine, such is the force and pressure that will be exerted on the vehicle and its driver, Wing Commander Andy Green, who drove Thrust SSC to achieve the current land speed record of 1,228 km/h. Another innovation has been the creation of wheels capable of withstanding the consequent force and torque at that speed. Standard car wheels, says project leader Richard Noble, would self-destruct under such force, so it’s taken three years to literally reinvent the wheel. Made from solid slabs of aerospace-grade aluminium and weighing almost 100 kg each, the Bloodhound’s wheels – the fastest wheels ever created – will spin over

166 times per second at top speed, meaning that the force at the wheel rim will be 50,000 times the force of gravity. Initially, it was thought that the Bloodhound test site would be Verneukpan, another vast, flat area in the Northern Cape where Malcolm Campbell made his famous land speed record attempt in 1929, only to discover the pan’s penchant for shredding tyres. When the Northern Cape Government commissioned a full survey of Verneukpan it was discovered that the shale bed underneath the playa surface was breaking up and would cause problems for the test. Some 440 km north, Hakskeenpan had initially been dismissed as an option because of a large dirt road running through it. But when the road became defunct due to the arrival of a new tarmac road, it was suddenly a very viable choice. At over 19 km

long, and 5 km wide, with a very hard, very flat surface, Hakskeenpan is in fact considered ideal. Some 300 people volunteered to clear the area of rocks, stones and debris to create the Bloodhound track, which is 18 km long and 1,500 m wide. All that remains to be seen is whether or not the Bloodhound supersonic car will be complete and ready in time for its initial 322 km/h runway tests at Newquay Airport. If all goes to plan, sonic booms are expected to be heard breaking in front of a large crowd gathered in the Northern Cape desert in October. The planned viewing areas are approximately 2 km from the “flying mile”, and will be on slightly raised ground. Global interest is expected to be enormous and tickets will be required to attend, so it’s worth keeping track of unfolding events at www.bloodhoundssc.com.

Dune Surfing

Witsand Nature Reserve (www.witsandkalahari.co.za) is a 2,500 ha island of white sands within a sea of copperred Kalahari sand. Also known as brulsand – or roaring sands – because of the eerie murmur made by the sand when disturbed, Witsand’s 10 km belt of white dunes stand mostly between 20 to 60 m tall, but can reach up to 100 m in height. The dunes are considered prime sandboarding territory, and dune boards can be rented at the entrance to the reserve with operators giving lessons to the uninitiated. Rooiduin Guest Farm (rooiduinguestfarm@gmail.com) near the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offers sand surfing on dunes rising between 50 and 80 m, which are suitable for beginners (it’s not uncool to lie down on your board, either). The guest farm is near Twee Rivieren and offers cosy accommodation.

Footloose If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, it’s worth knowing that the Northern Cape offers some of the toughest trail running events on the continent, including the utterly mad Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (www.kaem.co.za), a 250 km self-sufficient desert run that happens over seven days in six stages in October. Known as the “Big Daddy” of South African off-road races, the route traverses the Augrabies Falls National Park and traditionally also passes through farmlands and several private game reserves, including Dabaras, Khamkirri, and Thorntree. It’s a serious test of endurance and resilience, with daytime temperatures tipping 40 degrees, while after dark the mercury plummets below five degrees. But the desert scenery makes it unforgettable, and it’s widely reputed to be among the world’s best organised stage races, drawing competitors from around 18 different countries. A slightly less savage desert footrace is the Richtersveld Wild Run (www.wildrun.com), which happens in the /Ai/Ais- Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in June. The race, which covers 200 km in five stages, exposes trail runners to a dramatic landscape of rugged kloofs and high mountains, with glimpses of the Orange River and an array of unusual and unique succulents along the way.

Waterbound Rodeo Some of the best rapids along the Orange River are found in the Northern Cape, and a number of outfits offer canoe and kayaking trips through the so-called Green Kalahari, where the country’s longest river cuts through the desert to create unexpected swathes of agricultural land. Water levels and speeds vary according to seasons and rainfall, but there is always adventure to be had as you ride through a spellbinding landscape. Based near Augrabies Falls National Park, Kalahari Outventures (www.kalahari-adventures.co.za) offers multi-day canoe trips and white water rafting starting either from the park itself, or from Southern Cross Game Reserve.

One of the purest ways to experience the sky, though, is paragliding, and quite a number of distance records in this adventurous sport have been set in the skies above De Aar and Kuruman, thanks to thermals rising from the hot earth below – flights as long as 350 km have been recorded. Cette année a vu la culmination de l’un des projets d’ingénierie les plus ambitieux qui soit : tenter de propulser un véhicule à travers le désert de Hakskeenpan dans le Cap du Nord, avec pour but d’établir un nouveau record de vitesse au sol. Si tout se passe bien, la « voiture » se déplacera à une vitesse supérieure à celle d’une balle tirée par une arme à feu et parcourra un mille en juste 3,6 secondes.

Cela devrait être une grande année pour le Cap du Nord. La plus grande province du pays, qui est aussi la moins peuplée, s’apprête à accueillir un évènement mondial exceptionnel et à devenir un point de convergence, ce qui lui permettra de se promouvoir comme étant la région de l’extrême. Si tout se déroule comme prévu, le moins d’octobre sera le couronnement du projet de voiture supersonique britannique Bloodhound, qui aura lieu dans un coin perdu du Cap du Nord du nom de Hakskeenpan. Ce vaste désert de sel a été identifié comme étant l’endroit idéal pour tenter de battre l’époustouflant record absolu de vitesse terrestre.

Ce projet a pour mission de créer un véhicule dont la vitesse peut atteindre 1000 milles à l’heure, c’est-à-dire 1610 km/h. Il est presque impossible d’imaginer qu’une voiture puisse parcourir la longueur de 4 terrains de football en une seule seconde. La conception d’une voiture qui peut se déplacer à une vitesse supérieure à celle du son requiert une carrosserie aussi résistante que la coque d’un sous-marin pour pouvoir résister à la force et la pression exercées sur le véhicule et le pilote ; le pilote, commandant d’escadre Andy Green, est le détenteur du record courant battu au volant de Thrust SSC à la vitesse de 1 228 km/h.

L’invention de roues capables de supporter force et couple à une telle vitesse est une autre formidable innovation. Des roues de voitures courantes s’autodétruiraient si elles étaient soumises à une telle force, et de ce fait il a fallu trois ans pour concevoir les roues actuelles. Des blocs massifs fabriqués à partir d’un alliage d’aluminium de qualité aérospatiale et pesant presque 100 kg chacun ont été utilisés pour les roues de la Bloodhound qui tourneront à une vitesse de 166 tours/seconde à vitesse maximale, ce qui veut dire que la force exercée sur la jante sera supérieure à 50 000 fois la force exercée par la gravité. Initialement, le site de Verneukpan – une autre immense étendue plate du Cap du Nord – avait été choisi comme site d’essai mais l’on découvrit rapidement que ce désert salé avait tendance à déchiqueter les pneus. À 440 km plus au nord se trouve Hakskeenpan qui, d’une

longueur de 19 km et d’une largeur de 5 km et doté d’une surface très dure et très plate, était l’endroit idéal. Environ 300 personnes se sont portées volontaires pour enlever les rochers, cailloux et débris qui jonchaient le sol, dans le but de créer une piste de 18 km de long et de 1 500 m de large pour la Bloodhound. Reste à voir si la Bloodhound supersonique sera finie et prête à temps pour son essai initial sur piste à l’aéroport de Newquay, à une vitesse de 322 km/h. Si tout se déroule comme prévu alors des bangs supersoniques seront entendus par une foule nombreuse rassemblée dans le désert du Cap du Nord en octobre. En vue d’un intérêt global colossal il faudra se munir de billets pour assister à l’évènement et il est donc recommandé de se maintenir informé sur le déroulement des évènements sur www.bloodhoundssc.com.

Abundant birdlife, swathes of lush riverfront scenery, and enough animals to trip over, make Botswana’s Chobe National Park one of the most idyllic and rewarding game viewing spots in Southern Africa.

Botswana at the end of the dry season is just that – and bone rattlingly so. What little greenery there is, has either been stripped of its colour by the heat or coated in a fine layer of brown dust, like everything here. And so, as you pass through the gates of the Chobe National Park, your first glimpses of blue and green seem so improbable that you hardly believe your eyes. Rising out of the surrounding desert, the Chobe River cuts a swathe through the dusty landscape, bringing with it green islands and verdant river banks. These islands are so lush and incongruous in their surroundings that they appear like a mirage out of the shimmering heat waves that crinkle the air. But as you drive closer, you realise that not only is what you are seeing real, but it is also teeming with wildlife. Herds of antelope munch grass alongside zebras and warthogs, while baboons play lookout in the surrounding trees. Hippos happily galumph in the shallows, crocodiles sun themselves on the riverbanks, and kingfishers dart in and out of the water with tiny silver fish in their beaks. If Noah was filling an arc of animals two by two, this would undoubtedly be the place to do it!

The Chobe National Park is one of the largest national parks in Botswana, and covers approximately 10,500 km². Due to its sheer size, the park can be divided into four sections, each characterised by its own distinct ecosystem. These are: the Serondela or Chobe riverfront area in the far north-eastern corner of the park; the Savuti Marsh in the west; the Linyati Swamps in the north-west; and the dry hinterland region between Savuti and Linyati. The most popular area of the park is undoubtedly the Serondela area, and in particular the stretch of park that lies between the town of Kasane and the Chobe River. Its popularity has a lot to do with the river, which flows along the border of the park and is a major watering spot for the resident animals, particularly during the dry season (May through October). The area also boasts forests of hardwood trees and abundant birdlife, and its flood plains are the only place in Botswana where visitors can see Puku antelope. Then there is also the fact that the park boasts one of the largest concentrations of game anywhere in Africa. So much so, that game guides here merely have to drive and point, as every turn in the road or bend in the river

One of the most memorable sights has to be seeing a family of elephants swim across the expanse of the Chobe River to reach the sweet green grass of one of its many islands. As they congregate at the water’s edge, the largest among them usually leads the way and plunges into the water, while the others fall in behind in single file, from largest to smallest, like something out of a Disney movie. In a perfect straight line, the leader wades deeper and deeper, until the water forms a perfect plimsoll line across his head, with just the tips of his ears and the top of his head visible. The smaller ellies are forced to swim, and after a while all that can be seen of the babies is their trunks sticking out of the water as they paddle along in the parents’ wake, until finally they can huff and puff themselves out of the water on the other side – slick and black from the water – with sweet green grass as their reward. Watching this is one of the great African experiences, and one which a trip to Africa’s Eden, The Chobe National Park, will certainly give you – along with many more.

yields another miraculous sighting. Boat safaris offer wonderfully up close and personal sightings of both the river’s inhabitants and those that are drawn to it. There is nothing quite like sitting quietly watching an iguana sun itself on an outstretched ledge of riverbank, while a nonchalant buffalo peers down at you from a slope above as it chews sedately on a few blades of grass. Everywhere you look there is birdlife. Carmine bee eaters chase their prey in a whirl of constant flutter and activity, while storks and cranes wade through the shallows looking for their next meal. And then there are the elephants. Impossible to miss due to their sheer size, true, but in the Chobe they are impossible to miss quite simply because they are everywhere. The Chobe National Park is a paradise for those passionate about pachyderms, as the population of these gentle giants has been allowed to grow unchecked here – to the extent that there are now an estimated 120,000 of them in the park!

Hailing from the rural town of Tsolo in the Eastern Cape, Bongeziwe Mabandla, a two-time SAMA nominee, heralds the New Year with soulful, urban African-folk on his upcoming album set for release in 2016.

Having a love for the arts from an early age, it was after studying drama at AFDA in Johannesburg that Bongeziwe began to truly invest his energy, passion and time into song writing and playing live music. He has since gained recognition for his distinct “unplugged style”. It is a sound that serves as a tribute to his musical influences (Tracy Chapman, Simphiwe Dana, Jabu Khanyile and Oliver Mtukudzi), and is infused with nuances of traditional Xhosa music, mbaqanga, soul, dub, and hip-hop. Since the release of his debut album Umlilo (which means “fire” in Zulu) through Sony Music SA in 2012, Bongeziwe has been engaging audiences the world over. He sang at the Nelson Mandela tribute on SABC1 in December 2013; toured locally as well as to Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Japan, North Korea and America in 2014; and then took to Canada in 2015 to play 15 shows, including several at the esteemed Vancouver Folk Festival and Nuits D’Afrique in Montreal. With the imminent release of his new album and its first single “Mangaliso”, as well as the probability of further satisfying his touring wanderlust, 2016 carries great promise for Bongeziwe. Indwe: Have you always had a passion for art and music? Bongeziwe Mabandla (BM): I was not so good at my school work, so I had to develop another talent. From an early age I was constantly drawing and singing. When growing up in a rural place, I think you always try to get rid of the boredom factor, so there was ample playing in somewhat of a “make believe” setting, requiring a lot of creativity. Indwe: Has studying drama and your acting career influenced your music career? BM: I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I consider it a skill to stand in front of people and bare your soul. Learning theatre has allowed me to feel a little more comfortable in these areas. Also, drama is about stories, and as a writer it becomes about characters, experiences and stories. Indwe: Tell us more about your new album. BM: The process so far has been amazing. I’m still working on the album – I have finished writing it, so it’s mostly in-studio recording and listening to new versions of material I have been working on. It’s been a while since I put something out. I do have nerves, but it’s going to be ready soon, hopefully in early 2016. We are planning a release of the single “Mangaliso” before the album release. Indwe: What has your time with Black Major as management been like? BM: I was in a bad state before Black Major. Music is a tough business that can leave you feeling empty. I’m blessed to have found people who are as passionate about what I’m doing as I am. It’s still hard and I have to constantly pick myself up. I do play a lot overseas, which is great… My current thoughts are that I’m just glad to find an audience, wherever it may come from. Indwe: What are you looking forward to in 2016? BM: I want to be touring. I did not realise how much work the album would require, so I’m looking forward to being on the road. I love playing live and being with my band. This is what I want to do more of, to be further “out there”, reaching out to people and connecting in real life. The start of a new year inevitably means resolutions are made (and later broken). However, if there is one resolution you need to make – and keep – in 2016, it’s taking care of your finances and saving enough for your future. Marriott Asset Management provides us with 16 tips to consider when investing in 2016.

• Establish your life goals early on. Do you want to retire at 55? Perhaps you are dreaming of an overseas holiday, a new kitchen, or your children’s education. Whatever your goals, investing money to achieve them works best with the power of time. • Start saving as early as you can. The earlier you start saving for your goals, the more time your investments will have to benefit from the compounding effect of reinvesting income and accumulating more capital. • Ensure you save enough. This is especially true for retirement. It is a generally accepted concept that you need to save at least 15 % of your annual income for 40 years in order to have saved enough to replace 70 % of your salary at retirement. • View investing as a marathon, not a sprint. Investing your money for five years or more is generally a good idea. Investing is best suited to long-term financial goals, like saving money for your child’s college fund or for your retirement. • Don’t speculate with your life savings. Investing should not be a gamble. Speculating invariably involves buying and selling investments based on very little fundamental knowledge, and typically produces enormous anxiety and poor results in practice. • Equity exposure is key. Historically, equities (shares in companies) outperform other asset classes such as cash and bonds. Equities have generally given investors a 6 % real return (total return minus inflation) over time, compared to a 2 % real return from bonds. • Consider investing offshore. Certain companies in first world markets are giving investors a significant opportunity to generate inflation-beating returns over the next five years. Products like Marriott’s International Share Portfolio (IIP) provide investors with a simple way to access these companies. • Avoid capital erosion in retirement. Capital erosion occurs when more income is drawn from an investment portfolio than is being produced by the underlying investments (i.e. dividends or interest). By eroding capital, you reduce the ability of your investments to generate income in the future. • Don’t worry about economic variables which are out of your control. It is difficult to predict interest rates, the future direction of the exchange rate, or the stock market. Rather concentrate on what is actually happening to the businesses in which you are invested. • Diversification makes sense. Investment diversification is one of the fundamental building blocks of a solid portfolio. Diversification means investing in solid bluechip companies which are exposed to first world and emerging markets and have a broad range of products.

Diversification is just another way of saying: “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.” Never invest in anything that you don’t understand. Contrary to popular opinion, investing doesn’t have to be complicated – adopting an investment philosophy based on common sense will significantly reduce financial anxiety. And if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Invest in shares that produce consistent and reliable dividend income streams. Certain companies will continue to produce reliable and growing income regardless of global slowdowns, exchange rate volatility, and declining interest rates. Nestlé is a good example of this. Consumers around the world drink on average 5,500 cups of Nescafé every second of every day. Other examples of Nestlé brands include Maggi 2 Minute Noodles and KitKat. Over five billion packets of Maggi Noodles are sold every year and 650 KitKat fingers are consumed every second of the day. Choosing to invest in companies like this will significantly reduce the risk of an investment outcome not meeting expectations. Don’t pay too much for an investment and its income stream. Ensure the investments you make will generate enough income to offset the eroding impact of inflation over time. Find out how much your investments cost. Investment fees reduce not only the investment returns, but also the income earned from investments, and will therefore have an impact on how much income you can draw in retirement or how much income you are reinvesting pre-retirement. Seek financial advice. Although many people practise DIY investing, it does take knowledge, understanding and thorough research to make the right decisions to suit your needs. Get professional advice from a FAISlicensed financial advisor on all the points raised above and together, formulate a plan that’s right for you. Remember that, above all, investing is ultimately all about income. Capital growth may receive a great deal of investor attention. However, investing should ultimately be focused on building an income stream to fund a lifestyle. Consequently, instead of agonising over the prices of your investments on a daily basis, rather spend that time monitoring the income produced by your investments.

The Namib – one of the oldest deserts in the world with the bleached bones of humans and animals and the rusted wrecks of ships lying silently in the ever shifting sands of the desert – is an epic undertaking, but one made easier with the help of a Toyota Land Cruiser.

To me, as a born Namibian, this was a homecoming of sorts when I was invited by Toyota South Africa to evaluate their Land Cruiser LC200 under the most extreme conditions imaginable. The six day safari started in easy mode with a vehicle allocation visit to Indongo Toyota – the biggest Toyota dealership on the southern side of Windhoek. Symbolic in a way, this location served as a portend of what was to be a trip of epic memory-making consequences and a newly found respect for Toyota’s off road products. The first section (in convoy) was an uneventful 95 km on tar trip to Rehoboth, home of the local Baster community. Refuelling was not required at this stage because the LC200’s 93-litre fuel tank, as well as the 45-litre sub-tank had consumed just over 8.5 litres by that stage. Well aware of the terrain we were about to enter, the rather subdued group of journalists, dealers and senior Toyota officials, under the leadership of senior vicepresident Calvyn Hamman, soon arrived at a quaint little bakery/general dealership/filling station and well known oasis in the Namib Naukluft Park. Going by the strange name of Solitaire, this stopover has achieved world fame with its large offerings of apfelstrudel which it serves in vast quantities to 4x4 enthusiasts from all parts of the world. Meanwhile, the LC200 was humming along with its refined six-speed automatic transmission distributing 173 kW of power to all four wheels. A dramatic night followed at Moon Mountain Inn where a desert storm wind threatened to dislodge the fivestar tented accommodation that we called home for that night. This was to be our last “civilised” accommodation before our arrival in Walvis Bay five days later. Loading up the by now dust-covered convoy the following morning before heading into the Namib proper, Uri Adventures expedition leader, Danie van Ellerwee (who goes by the name of Jakkals), briefed us as to how the Namib – unlike most other deserts – is a living ecosystem which plays host to large animals such as elephant, Gemsbok, and even the elusive Black rhino, as well as minute creatures which survive off the mist which swirls in from the Atlantic during the night and early morning.

The LC200’s many goodies, such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist became a never required and distant memory once we entered the red dunes. Now it was time for multi-terrain select and multi-terrain monitor (especially useful when having to check the distances between rocks and bodywork). With the red dunes looming menacingly on the horizon – and seemingly getting bigger and taller as we approached – it was time to give silent thanks for the powerful (610 Nm of torque) 4.5-litre diesel V8. Clearly, Toyota doesn’t believe in bringing a knife to a gunfight, and this powerful oil-burner was just the right tool with which to tackle, and conquer, the Namib. Next stop, with the LC200 purring along in the company of its cousins, the Prado and the 3-litre V6, was the awesome Kuiseb Ravine with its rudimentary facilities. This ravine is also home to the 300-odd pastoral Topnaar people who inhabit 13 villages within the borders of the park where they raise livestock and harvest inara melons. The Kuiseb Ravine is also noteworthy in that it forms an effective barrier, which prevents the giant red sand dunes of the Namib from spilling over onto the plains, although they still serve as magnificent sentinels that cut off the route to the coast. This means that other great features, essential for survival in the desert, such as centre diff lock, low range, and even crawl control, were brought into the equation

with perhaps the greatest feature of all – hydraulic power steering – providing superior feedback and steering feel, especially during highly technical off road driving. The five-day, 530 km expedition through the 50,000 km2 Namib Naukluft National Park also proved that dune driving, contrary to popular belief, is the forté of high powered petrol engines because of the instant power availability. Slipfaces, too many to count, and several infamous descents into holes of up to 120 m deep were easy pickings for the Land Cruiser vehicles. The mere sensation of stopping right on the slipface while realising that one has to tackle a deep, 36 degree descent, is quite overwhelming, to say the least. Eventually, after spending four nights in the Namib proper, the convoy reached the coast with, remarkably, not a single vehicle having experienced any mechanical problems. Sure, there was the occasional under-inflated tyre popping off the rim, but not even the heat gauges on the vehicles ever recorded anything but normal – and this during daytime when temperatures frequently went as high as 41 °C. With the convoy proudly carrying the name “Champions of Africa”, Toyota certainly delivered on their promise that their vehicles will not only get you to exotic destinations, but will also be tough enough to get you back home again. The Namib Naukluft National Park draws visitors from all parts of the world, and a Toyota 4x4 should be an essential part of your equipment, should you heed the call to explore it.

The first step is the hardest for many people, yet the most crucial part to ensuring financial success. Spending more than you have is no different than robbing your future self. Debt has the power to destroy the best plans and, as much as the compounding of interest works in your favour in saving and investment, it also works the other way, as interest payable can compound to the point of eroding even your non-discretionary spending. Delayed gratification – the willingness to wait before expecting your reward – is a powerful differentiator between the financially free and those who remain broke. Shorter-term saving for expenditure beyond your regular monthly expenses must focus on capital preservation, rather than seeking return. What this means is that the return, or interest that you earn on these savings, is less important than the amount of money you save and resisting the temptation to spend it outside of its intended purpose. The interest saved by not incurring debt will be much more than any potential interest earned on such savings. The critical success factors for longer-term investment – whether for retirement or for building wealth – are threefold: Minimise costs, maximise tax efficiency, and never withdraw it. • An annual cost differential of one or two percent may seem insignificant on a one-year basis, but over the 40+ years of building up your wealth base, this can compound to the point of reducing your capital by as much as two-thirds. • Making maximum use of tax dispensations in a retirement annuity (RA) and tax-free savings and

investment accounts (TFSIA) is one of the best ways to increase wealth and boost the size of your asset base. Tax concessions in an RA come in two forms – contributions are tax exempt (within prescribed limits) and growth (capital gains and distributions) is tax-free. Tax is only payable once you start withdrawing after retirement, at which time your overall tax liability should be much lower. A TFSIA, available since March 2015, offers full tax benefits after the initial contributions, which are not tax exempt, and limited in terms of both annual and lifetime contributions. All growth and distributions in a TFSIA are free of tax, there is no lock-up and no tax is payable at the time of withdrawal. • Preservation of retirement savings is crucial as you move through life, changing jobs, growing your family, or expanding your asset base. Always resist the temptation to use retirement savings to fund shortterm needs, get out of debt, or reward yourself with unnecessary “wants”. The final component of a successful financial strategy is to share with, and empower others. A singular focus on your own financial freedom and success will not be sustainable if those around you remain a drain on you and your resources. You cannot be an island of prosperity in a sea of poverty. Share your knowledge and your learning, motivate and encourage others to also achieve financial independence and stability, and then enjoy the satisfaction of shared success. Lexus recently endowed its enduring IS sedan range with their smooth, yet powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, creating a new tier of exclusivity for drivers who demand more, for less. Debuting in the stridently styled NX compact SUV, Lexus’ turbocharged 2.0-litre powerplant has been rotated 90 degrees and dropped into the brand’s IS compact sports sedan to create the IS 200t. Providing a blend of performance, dynamics and economy, the IS 200t is the ideal range companion to the 233 kW V6 IS 350 F Sport, and is available exclusively in E and EX grades.

The Car As one of the most underrated compact premium sedans in the market, the IS received barely enough recognition, despite its competitor-whipping sporty character and Lexus heritage. This may change following Lexus’ “correction” of their IS offering, with the new 200t’s smaller displacement turbocharged engine providing improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, while still delivering a handsome 350 Nm of torque. Power has also been increased by five kilowatts from the NX’s configuration, seeing a new 180 kW high. While South African buyers are yet to fully come to terms with the global engine downsizing trend, the Lexus 2.0-litre turbo will go some way in establishing a good reputation for smaller capacity, higher output mills. At the launch in Port Elizabeth recently, the IS 200t showed not only its powerful character, but also its flexibility, bringing all of the engine’s substantial 350 Nm online from as low as 1,650 r/min (thanks to its twin-scroll turbo that enhances power output from lower revs), all the way to its 4,400 r/min peak.

The eight-speed Lexus Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission – with paddle shift – is a perfect accompaniment to power, providing high levels of driveability comparable to other rear-wheel drive configured sports sedans. Lexus has aimed the 2.0-litre IS squarely at the Jaguar XE 2.0T (R638,900) and the BMW 330i (R518,360), and have carved a value niche in terms of a high level of standard specification in this car. Both the 200t E (R518,800) and EX (R570,300) grade feature multi-spoke 17” wheels, and in terms of interior trim, are equipped with everything from seat heating and ventilation, a 7” central colour display, full leather trim and electric front seats, to front and rear park-distance control (PDC) and more. The EX grade also gets satellite navigation, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror and reverse camera. Lexus’ interior quality and superior cabin look and feel is unquestioned, as is the car’s already comprehensive safety specification. By adding rear side airbags, Lexus has increased the tally to ten supplemental restraint systems across the range, outdoing its closest rivals. An electrically adjustable steering column, which retracts automatically when the vehicle is turned off, further accentuates the sense of convenience and luxury on the E and EX models.

The Drive The IS 200t’s eight-speed SDS transmission has proven itself in the IS 350 F Sport and RC 350, and the latest iteration also boasts added electronic-control technology,

including a Lexus-first: Downshift Lock-up Control. Appealing to drivers who demand high levels of involvement from their sports sedans, the transmission also features autoblip downshifts, delivering a good balance between straightline acceleration, fuel economy, and driveability. Add to that the Lexus Drive Mode Select switch that allows the driver to choose between Eco, Normal and Sport modes, and the driver can further tune the IS’ response to their personal preference and driving style. The Sport mode triggers just the right amount of throttle response and power steering assistance for my style of driving. While Normal mode is good enough for everyday driving, and Eco mode is great for optimising fuel economy, the 200t’s dynamic characteristics step up to the plate when the Sport mode is selected, showing off the Yamaha-developed performance damper system that counteracts body roll and notably increases the IS’ torsional rigidity.

The Verdict With its combination of sharp styling, high build quality, interior comfort, and a great new turbo engine, the Lexus IS 200t should feature on every executive’s compact premium sedan shortlist. As with the rest of the Lexus range, all models in the IS range are covered by a four-year/100,000 km warranty. The E Model also comes standard with the Lexus “Distance” maintenance plan, while the EX model gets “Distance Plan Plus”.

Sitting in a coffee shop or even just walking down the road, it is clearly evident how “connected” our world has become. Whether it is a smartphone, a tablet, or a notebook, our lives are quickly evolving and centering more around the digital environment. With us relying on the Internet for everything, from online banking to chatting with friends, how many of us have given any thought to protecting our digital identities from malicious users?

Many people believe that this could never happen to them but, unfortunately, the statistics make for some concerning reading. A survey in the United States found that 15 million Americans have their identities fraudulently used each year, with financial losses experienced estimated to be in excess of $50 billion. While, locally, the 3,600 reported cases last year may pale in comparison, it does not lessen the danger or impact of identity theft. Protecting your digital identity is something that has

to be done year-round – especially as online shopping, booking holidays online and of course the convenience of doing banking from anywhere are now a standard process for many people. But if your identity is compromised or cloned, then there are very real financial risks that can result, which will put a serious dent in getting 2016 off to a great start. A compromised digital identity also poses a physical threat. And often, it’s really easy for cybercriminals to find

out information about you – just think about how much you share on social media platforms. We all tend to share personal details, like those recent holiday snaps, tagging your family and friends as you go along, showing where you are and who is with you. Knowing where you live and being able to track your movements means that you and your family become easy targets for break-ins, hijackings, or worse. Granted, these are extreme cases, but it pays to be aware of the dangers. While it might seem counter-intuitive to a connected (and social) lifestyle, it is always advisable to set boundaries about what you post online. So for example, avoid revealing where a photo was taken and stop geo-tagging photos that show exact locations. Also be cautious about posting photos or video clips that reveal your address or show the valuables in your home. If you have children and they are active online, it is definitely worthwhile having a conversation with them about the type of information they share and with whom they share it. Talk to them about the dangers involved and why it’s important to remain vigilant. Fortunately, there is security software that is designed to protect you and your loved ones on a variety of devices. It is a good idea to do some research on the most wellknown brands and evaluate which of their offerings fit your lifestyle, but the right solution is usually very easy to use and many focus on family protection. While we have not reached the stage of having to lie awake at night and worry, we all need to examine what information we share and how we share it. Security software

is a great method of protection, but user behaviour is key. After all, it doesn’t help having 2 m high fences around your home, if you hand the gate key to a stranger.

Markus Bezuidenhout Cabin Crew Member Length of Service: April 2016 will mark my sixth year at the company. Tell us more about yourself. I am spunky and very driven and I love reading, sports and children. What is the most exciting part of your job? The most exciting part for me is meeting our passengers on every flight. I’ve had passengers onboard who have made me laugh so much that my stomach hurt. I’ve experienced kind and generous souls who surprised the crew who were working over the Festive Season with Christmas cards, and I’m always humbled to witness the incredible courage displayed by the kids travelling by themselves as unaccompanied minors for the first time. What do you find most challenging in what you do? The weather at times can be quite a challenge – summer turbulence especially will have some passengers holding onto their hats! As unnerving as it may be for some passengers, they can always take comfort in the fact that our pilots are professional and

experienced aviators and understand how to navigate our skies safely. Passengers should rather enjoy watching a thunderstorm from a distance – it is spectacular. On the surface it seems all “tea or coffee”, however, the reality is that we’ve all done extensive training in the safety aspects of operating in an airline. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters in your job? I once had a gentleman seated by himself in the very last row, while the rest of the passengers were mostly seated towards the front of the aircraft. He looked at me with a sulking lip and started singing, “All by myself… don’t want to be, all by myself...” It was hilarious!

Special services Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators. Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. Skycheck at the aircraft for hold stowage. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not be required during the flight on to the Skycheck cart at the boarding steps of the aircraft. Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Baggage liability Valuable items such as cameras and accessories, computers – including laptops and notebooks – mobile telephones, perfumes, aftershaves, colognes, legal and company documents and legal tender – including cash, credit cards and cheques – bullion, leather jackets, all types of jewellery and any other items with a value in excess of R400 must be removed from either checked-in or Skycheck baggage as the airline is not liable for loss or damage to these items. Safety Information Health regulations Health regulations at certain airports require that the aircraft cabin be sprayed. The spray is harmless, but if you think it might affect you, please cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief. Remain seated As a safety precaution, passengers are requested to remain seated with seatbelts fastened after the aircraft has landed, until the seatbelt sign has been switched off by the captain. Portable electronic equipment The use of personal electronic devices (PEDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) will apply to all domestic and regional flights on the CRJ700/200 and DH8 Q400.

Passengers will be permitted to use PEDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such as cell phones, e-readers and electronic tablets in flight-mode.

Cellular telephones Cellular telephones may be used on the ground while passenger doors are open. Cellular telephones, smartphones or any device with flight mode must be switched off as soon as the cabin doors are closed and when the senior cabincrew member makes an announcement on the public-address system. Laptop computers Laptops with CD ROM and DVD drive, handheld calculators, electric shavers and portable personal listening devices may not be used on the ground during taxi but may be used during the flight when the seatbelt signs are switched off and with permission from the captain. Should circumstances dictate otherwise, a public-address announcement cancelling this concession will be made by a crew member.

Prohibited equipment Portable printers, laser pointers, video equipment, CB/ AM/FM/FHF/satellite receivers, two-way radios, compact disc and mini-disc players, scanners, remote-controlled toys and power converters are prohibited for use at any time. Safety pamphlet Read the safety pamphlet in the seat pocket in front of you and take note of your nearest emergency exit. Smoking In accordance with international trends, smoking is not permitted on board any SA Express flights. Seat belts Please fasten your seat belt whenever the seat belt signs are illuminated. Passenger Letters Good day. My recent flight to Harare was unfortunately delayed just before we took off from Durban. We were forced to return and to park, and then the doors were opened and we were offered refreshments. The cabin crew and pilot were very friendly and kept us up to date. Unfortunately the repairs were expected to take a while, so we had to go back to the terminal building. Here we were given a voucher for some more refreshments, which was also a very nice thought… Until we redeemed them at the restaurant. First they had no ice, then the food took forever to arrive and then, when it did arrive, it was cold and tasteless. But then we were welcomed on board again by your friendly cabin crew, took off, and were thankfully served a better meal on the plane. They also had ice! Although there was a delay, which was no one’s fault, the situation was made so much more pleasant by the cabin crew, who tried their best under the circumstances. A little goes a long way where customers are concerned. Thank you to the cabin crew on the flight – you were great! To Whom it May Concern I recently flew on SA Express from Richards Bay to Johannesburg. When I disembarked the plane in Johannesburg, my silver vanity case, which I had put down just outside the plane, was nowhere to be found. We spent more than two hours at the airport searching for it with the help of SA Express (my chronic medication was also in there), but with no luck. After I left the airport, one of your staff phoned me later to say that they still could not find it. Then I phoned SA Express in Richards Bay and they were very helpful. One person in particular I have to mention is Precious, who phoned me twice that day, and contacted security at OR Tambo International Airport. Thanks to her efforts, my vanity case was eventually found. Precious phoned me the following day again just to confirm that I was happy as she had been worried about me. This lady really is excellent at what she does. Please mention this to her, because she really went out of her way to help me. Thank goodness for people like her. Tania Fourie
